New shopping mall for Uitenhage “It has been long overdue for the residents of Uitenhage and Despatch to enjoy the luxury and pleasure of shopping in an upmarket mall.” HEILIE COMBRINCK

modern and upmarket shopping mall will soon be a reality for residents of Uitenhage.

“With lettable space of approximately 30 000m² it will host a variety of national outlets similar to those found in the most popular malls,” said Darell Willemse, spokesperson of Elatiprox Pty. Ltd., the developing company. “The developer also realised the lack of entertainment, parking and security in town. He therefore gave special attention to ensure that a wellknown entertainment brand would be a prominent tenant. “Parking will definitely not be a problem as three levels will be allocated with a total of 1 883 parking bays. When it comes to security, there will be a zero tolerance towards any activities prohibiting mall clients from shopping in peace.” The East Cape Mall will be built on 50 000m² next to Union Avenue, opposite the Aandmymering old age home. The developer, Piet Botha, who hails from Pretoria and owns several developments, bought the land from Ray Long who previously operated a nursery from the premises. Botha visited the Nelson Mandela Metro with the aim of getting to know the area and searching for an appropriate site for development. “A property agent accompanied me to Uitenhage and when we visited the site I knew this was it,” said Botha. “To find an already zoned area in

the country, which has all the qualities needed for a decent development, is not easy. I am looking forward to this new development,” said Botha. According to Willemse they are

Dance in support of Brendan (5) HEILIE COMBRINCK A dance will be held in Uitenhage in aid of Brendan van Heerden Smit (5) who has a severe respiratory disease and needs to urgently undergo an operation in Cape Town. According to a letter from paediatrician Dr Jordaan, Brendan needs this operation to ensure that his lungs do not deteriorate any further. “Brendan has to be at the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital on the 17th March where Dr Richard Wood will handle the operation,” said Mrs Johanna “Sussie” Mostert the foster parent of Brendan.

“As he is a disabled child who also has a heart defect, doctors told me he will never be able to walk or talk. Well, they were amazed the other day when Brendan walked into the surgery. Where there is hope and love there is life.” Brendan twice received certificates for the “Bravest Boy” by staff from the children’s ward of Cuyler Netcare Hospital. “We want to thank the staff and doctors at this children’s ward for their fantastic support and care. Also a huge thank you to the persons who gave Brendan a wheelchair and those who supported his school fees and travelling costs to Aurora. Your support is heart-warming,” said Mrs Mostert.

Low flying helicopter worried residents HEILIE COMBRINCK A low flying helicopter during the early hours of last Sunday had many a Uitenhage resident wide awake and worried. The helicopter circled mainly above Scheepershoogte, Mosel, Penford, Janssensdal and the Central area of Uitenhage for approximately an hour or two. Several residents phoned the UD News on Monday to enquire what this was all about. “The sudden overwhelming sound woke me. I was so confused and at first thought

it’s my cell phone or thunder or something and then I heard a helicopter flying at a very low altitude,” said a resident from Scheepershoogte. A resident from Penford said “I was so worried as the helicopter kept on circling the area. I decided to rather play safe and immediately checked if all the windows and doors were locked.” Another resident from Mosel told the UD News that they went outside to determine what it was and then saw a helicopter circling the area at a very low height. W.O. Gerda Swart, spokespeson from the Uiten-

hage police confirmed that it indeed was not a police helicopter, but one of Altech Netstar’s air recovery teams in search of a stolen vehicle. According to Swart no vehicle was found. Altech Netstar is the largest user of helicopter services in the country. In searching for stolen vehicles the air recovery teams consist of the aircraft pilot and the airtracker. The tracker is responsible for locating the signal, guiding the pilot and the ground crew to the stolen vehicle, and communicating with the control centre.

Nou is 3rd Degree Live Band ene vuur en vlam oefen vir hulle volgende optrede op 7 April in die Allanridge gemeenskapsaal. Die groep bedank raadslid Kohl vir sy bydrae wat dit nou vir hulle moontlik maak om die gemeenskap deur middel van hulle musiek te ondersteun.

HEILIE COMBRINCK ‘n Musiekgroep van Uitenhage is oorstelp van vreugde na die ontvangs van nuwe instrumente ter waarde van sowat R25 000. “Nou kan ons doen wat ons wil doen en dit is om musiek te maak,” sê Dennis Jood, leier van die 3rd Degree Live Band Die groep is in 2005 gestig deur Dennis Jood, Stanley Sampson, Eugene Fourie, Malcolm Myburgh en Beverley Jood. Fourie het die groep verlaat, maar drie talentvolle nuwelinge is nou deel van 3rd Degree Live Band naamlik Izelle Links, Dean Jood en Martin February. “Ons is betrokke by verskeie fondsinsamelingprojekte van kerke, skole, sportklubs en liefdadigheidsorganisasies. Maar dit is ‘n opdraende stryd om ‘n band aan die

Local singer to perform at Mighty Family Fest HEILIE COMBRINCK The “mighty” gatherings hit the country by storm with the latest being the Mighty Family Festival where local singer Illana van Vuuren was invited to perform. This versatile young singer from Despatch was offered a 40 minute slot to perform at the festival which will be held near Great Brak River. Wellknown Michael Lindt will also perform at the Mighty Family Festival.

Angus Buchan started the Mighty Men conference and now his brother Dr Fergus Buchan organised the family festival which will be held at Yellowoods on the banks of the Moordkuyl River near Great Brak River on the 3rd and 4th March. Ilana gained her popularity through her brilliant performance of Brenda Fassie’s “Vulindlela”. What makes her shows vibrant is that she sings in Zulu, Xhosa, English and Afrikaans. During the Mighty Family Festival she will sing mainly gospel songs.

Now the roaring of bulldozers will soon be heard as this movie house complex will have to make way for new development. The Marryats schoolwear and

garments shop which is part of the old cinema complex will also be demolished. A “new” Marryats will open its doors at 20 John Street by midMarch. “Marryats was established by my mother, Joey van Zyl, sixty years ago. She opened her first shop in the Mosel shopping area and then later moved to the central business area of town,” said Mrs Gloria Rens, owner of the building which houses Marryats and the former Uitenhage cinema. The late Mrs Van Zyl was renowned for her exceptional

skills in baking, the making of bridal wear and the variety of fashionable hats. The name Marryats is a compilation of the words “marry” and “hats” for which the business was wellknown. Apart from her mother’s shop, Mrs Rens opened her own fashion wear shop next to the entrance of the cinema. After her late mother’s retirement, she took ownership of Marryats. In continuing the Marryats family business tradition Mrs Rens said she prefers to operate in the central business area and therefore purchased premises in John Street.

Local artists take a bite of Big Apple Remember a little known two piece making a name for themselves as Diesel Vanilla? Well, Digby and the Lullaby are those two. Just with a new moniker and a new outlook. In October last year, Cape Town-based musicians Darren Digby Peens and Rouchelle Hübsch (formerly from Uitenhage) of the duo Digby and the Lullaby took a leap of faith and boarded a plane to New York after forging a relationship with American producer Kieran Kelly. “We sent Kieran a link to one of our songs For Now on YouTube and he took a liking to our music,” says Darren. The duo spent a month in Kelly’s studio to record what they say is their dream-come-true debut album. While in New York, they performed shows at Googies in Manhattan and a charity show for One Home Many Hopes, an organisation that rescues orphaned and abandoned girls in

Kenya. “Our trip to the States has not only given us a great record but also put us in touch with the right people in the industry. Our music is getting into the right hands,” says Darren. Digby and the Lullaby’s sound has been described as sublime, ethereal alternative indie folk – think Neal Young’s Harvest mixed with a little Norah Jones and a touch of Seventies. They are aiming to have their first single out in April, and to launch their album in June. SThey will be performing at The Savoy Theatre in Port Elizabeth on the 7th, 9th and 10th of March and Five Elements Restaurant in St Francis Bay on the Thursday the 8th of March. All shows start at 20:00. Tickets are available on Computicket for the Port Elizabeth shows and at the venue for the St Francis Bay show at Five Elements.

The Department of Transport (DOT) in conjunction with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Engen and other roleplayers embarked on this venture to assist in educating learners through extra-mural classes

in physical science, mathematics and English. “It is absolutely encouraging! Their marks say it all,” said Mrs Nomvuyo Daka, Principal at Mary Mount High School. During the recently held award ceremony of DOT Saturday School at the NMMU, Mary Mount High School was awarded the Most Supporting School, Best Performing School in Mathematics and Most Improved in Science. A Mary Mount Grade 12 learner from the 2011 class, Vuyolwethu Joosen was named the top learner attending last

year’s DOT Saturday School. His matric results were also the best of all learners from historically disadvantaged institutions in the Uitenhage area. Several of the current Mary Mount learners also received subject awards. According to Mrs Daka, the approximately 20 Grade 10 to 12 learners identified to attend the DOT school are all eager and helpful towards their fellow classmates back at school. “There is a great difference. These children are so motivated and their performance is good.”

Owners responsible for section repairs This week the Property Poser panel deals with two similar questions regarding responsibility for maintenance in a sectional title complex. The first reader is having problems with water damage to built-in cupboards, caused by a leaking shower in the unit above. The body corporate referred the issue to the person living in that unit, but he is merely a tenant who has undertaken to contact the owner. In another matter, a reader complains about a badly neglected garden gate in one of the units in his complex. The hinges are broken and the wood unvarnished and rotten. The owner refuses to take responsibility. According to Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Nelson Mandela

Bay, the maintenance in a sectional title scheme is typically the responsibility of the body corporate. “The Sectional Titles Act makes the body corporate responsible for the maintenance of the common property, while owners are responsible for their sections.” Vermaak says common property includes driveways, parking bays and garages, private and communal gardens, swimming pools, corridors, lifts and entrance foyers. “With reference to the first reader’s problem, it is the duty of the owner of the upper unit to keep his section in a state of repair and fix the shower.” Vermaak says the insurance of the building will sometimes cover resultant damage in these situations. “However, if not, he may claim the cost of the repairs from the offending

owner.” The Act even allows the body corporate to perform maintenance to a section at the owner’s expense, should he or she fail to do so, says Vermaak. “After giving 30 days’ notice, the body corporate may remedy the situation and recover the reasonable costs of repair from the owner.” Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in the metro says some parts of the common property may be allocated as exclusive use areas to certain owners. “An owner who enjoys such rights is obligated to keep that area clean and neat.” Du Toit says exclusive use areas remain common property and belong to all owners in the scheme in undivided shares. “They are therefore the responsibility of the body corporate.”

However, says Du Toit, the Act makes it plain that the body corporate requires the owner to make additional contributions, in the form of a levy, for exclusive use. “This is for maintenance, rates and taxes as well as insurance, unless the rules of the scheme state that the owner is responsible for these costs.” In the second example, Du Toit says one must determine whether the rules make the owner responsible for repairs or whether he merely pays an additional levy. “If he is responsible for the repairs and fails to fix the gate, the body corporate may do so and claim any reasonable costs. Focus on health Keep your brain fit – diet for a healthy brain We have a fairly good idea of what we should be doing to look after our physical health, but when it comes to mental wellbeing, many of us have no idea where to begin. The good news is that some of the things that you need to do to assist healthy brain function are the same things that will keep you physically fit and healthy. Studies by the Alzheimer’s Association have shown that adults who were obese in middle age

were twice as likely to develop dementia in later life, and that those who also had high cholesterol and blood pressure were more than six times as likely to develop dementia. According to the association, you should avoid foods with saturated fat and cholesterol – although HDL or “good” cholesterol may protect brain cells. Instead, use mono and polyunsaturated fats like olive oil, and grill or bake your food instead of frying. Increase your intake of protective foods like dark skinned fruit and vegetables, cold water fish and nuts. This will reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, and increase the natural protection of your brain cells. Other foods that are good for your brain are cherries, berries, apples, curry, eggs, sardines, oysters and cocoa.

Exercising and resting your brain cells In the same way as our muscles deplete if we don’t use them, our brain cells need practice to function at optimum levels. Obviously, people who work in demanding and challenging environments are working their brains the whole time, but even they need to stimulate their synapses when they’re not under pressure. Working with maths games or word puzzles are great ways to keep the brain ticking over. Reading a good book or the daily news is another way to keep the brain cells buzzing. Although television might be a good way of staying current or having a bit of hard-earned downtime, spending endless hours in front of the box does very little to stimulate brain activity. On a more advanced level, learning a musical instrument or a new language are excellent

Brains love company One of the things that keep your brain working and supports your mental health is to ensure that you have a positive social life. This doesn’t mean that you have to party ‘til dawn with a wide circle of friends every night, but you should interact socially with people in different settings. The University of Michigan found that individuals who experienced less cognitive decline as they aged were those who were involved in a wider range of relationships where they had to speak and listen to others on a range of topics. If you do find that you’re isolated, sign up for a class, join in some kind of community activity or get involved in volunteer work. Make interacting with people a priority to keep your brain fit.

Avoid stress One of the biggest killers in modern times is stress – it can lead to heart problems, infertility, diabetes and a variety of other ailments and complications – yet other than acknowledging its existence, we do very little to alter our lifestyles and improve our stress levels. Many simple steps like learning to delegate, to say “no” or to create a to-do list can help to balance the demands on your time and reduce stress. But if your stress levels are getting out of hand, more drastic measures may need to be taken – like seeing a therapist or life coach, or speaking to the HR department at work. Remember that short-term stress can be motivating, but if you can’t remember the last time you felt relaxed, something needs to change.
