Increase in rape cases in Despatch

Stop the violence! HEILIE COMBRINCK The Uitenhage cluster of the South African Police Service has identified a noticeable increase in rapes and sexual assaults in the Despatch policing area. “Therefore we will be launching the 16 days campaign of no violence against women and children by staging an awareness walk through Khayamnandi in Despatch,” said police spokesperson Lt.Col. Priscilla Naidu. This year’s theme is “Walking in her shoes”. “In order to create an impact, men and women will walk in a specially designed T-shirt with the theme message printed on the back in English and Xhosa. All participants will also walk in women’s shoes, preferably heels,” said Lt.Col. Naidu. The 16 days of activism of no violence against women and children start tomorrow and will continue until 10 December. According to Lt.Col. Naidu, the eradication of women and child abuse is central to the fight against crime. “This requires deliberate programmes of education and other measures to transform gender and family relations and also to ensure the safety and restore the dignity of victims.” The public is encouraged to participate in the 1.2km Khayamnandi walk. The cost is R20 per person and it will start (10:00) and finish at the Khayamnandi community hall. For further details of the event contact Lt. Col. Polisie soek ooggetuies van ongeluk

Culpable homicide in U’hage

Despatch polisie is op soek na ooggetuies van die ongeluk tussen ‘n motorfiets en ‘n bakkie wat op Woensdag, 16 November omstreeks 06:30 in die dorp se Hoofstraat plaasgevind het. Die motorfietsryer, Christoffel Marais (19) is ernstig beseer in die ongeluk en het verlede Saterdagoggend in die hospitaal gesterf. Enige persoon wat ‘n ooggetuie van die ongeluk was of oor inligting beskik word versoek om W/O Dwayne Lerm te skakel by 041 933 8000 of 041 933 8021.

HEILIE COMBRINCK Uitenhage Police are looking for any witnesses in the accident that occurred on the morning of Thursday, 27 October 2011 at 08:30 in Melbrooks Avenue between a motorcycle and another vehicle. The driver of the motorcycle, Mr Keith Baadjies from Uitenhage died on the scene. According to police information there was another motorcycle when the accident occurred. The investigating officer, W/O Jacques Nell, would like the driver of that motorcycle to contact him at 0084 811 2975 or anyone who can assist with more information.

Prof. Jansen, as the chief editor, released a book called Great South African Teachers (Bookstorm Publishers) during October 2011. One of the stories included in this book was written by Mrs Ghauderen Coetzee-de

Vos, currently a lecturer at NMMU. Coetzee-de Vos submitted a story on the influence of Mr Joe Slingers on her life. “Mr Slingers has a rich history with Uitenhage. He was appointed principal at Uitenhage High School the same year that I started my standard 6 education there,” said Mrs Ghauderen Coetzee-de Vos. “He has gone on to play a pivotal role in my life until

He is currently lecturing part-time in the Education Department of the NMMU. “The rationale for publishing the book Great South African Teachers is that so many negativities are associated with teachers and teaching, yet there are still some good teachers out there, giving teaching the high regard it deserves. She invited Prof Jansen to Uitenhage to take him to the school context in which her story happened, but soon realized that limiting the audience of him would be an injustice. “Therefore, the idea emanated to have a Teachers Day in Uitenhage, with Mr Slingers as special guest and Prof Jansen as the keynote speaker.” said Coetzee-de Vos. The Uitenhage District Education Department came on board in allowing some teachers to attend this event on Wednesday, 30th November from 09:00 until 11:15 at the Uitenhage Town Hall.

Learners at Kirkwood Primary School held a “Doggy & Kitty” collection in aid of the Vallei Diere Vriende, a local charity organisation which assists with the lesser privileged animals in the community. The learners raised a collection of blankets as well as dog and cat food. Some of the learners, accompanied by Mrs Killian, head of department at the school handedover the items colleced to Ulrica Stiemie, a member of the Vallei Diere Vriende. Mosque’s Souk held at Indoor Sports Centre

The popular annual Lions Cradock Rally for motorcycling fans will be held in this Karoo town during the weekend of 1 to 3 December. This rally is one of the first Eastern Cape motorcycle rallies organised by a Lions Club. It was started by the Uitenhage Club. Motorcyclists are once again invited to participate in this rally. Funds raised will go towards charity.

The Uitenhage “Mosque of Our Ancestors” (Masjid-Al-Qudamaa) will have its Souk (market) at the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday, 3 December from 08:00-17:00. There will be a variety of food stalls offering mouthwatering eats and treats. Those wishing to erect a stall selling goods or items other than food are most welcome and may book by contacting Ayesha 0082 3733 889 or Ghouwa 0082 333 0063. Entities involved in the Souk include Masjidul Mu’Mineen, Uitenhage Islamic Association (Madressas) and Nazruddin. The mosque was originally built by Imaam Jaba ‘Ruddin in 1845 and rebuilt in 1974. BABY GIRL ABANDONED The Department of Social Development and special programmes in Uitenhage is requesting anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Carmelene Noda and Michael Jacobs to please contact the office urgently. It is crucial in the investigation regarding a baby girl that was abandoned on 7 November 2011. MISSING PERSONS

The process of being admitted to a hospital can be rather frustrating to both patients and hospital revenue staff, if the required documentation could not be submitted. Wolmerans en Jana Lamprecht het die meeste bloedskenkers gewerf (15). Founder members during 1913 at the then Uitenhage bowling club at Magennis Park. The year 2011 is an important historical milestone for the Uitenhage Bowls Club and its members as they are celebrating the club’s 100th year! The club was founded in 1911 by Mr T. Inggs and was situated in Magennis Park. By 1913 there were 28 members with Dr G. MacPherson as the first President of the club. The Uitenhage Chronicle reported at the 3rd Annual General Meeting which was held at the Royal Hotel on 28th April 1914 that membership had grown to 63. Within two years the Club had built two greens, the “Founders” green and the new “Chase” green which were opened by the then Mayor, Mr F. Tomlinson. Mrs H. Chase threw the first jack and the Mayoress, Mrs F. Tomlinson, delivered the first bowl. In 1912 the Club accepted a tender of £45 from Mr F. Minty to build a bowls clubhouse. By 1913 the overdraft at the bank was fully paid for by the profit on the sale of refreshments. The Uitenhage Bowling Club affiliated to the South African Bowling Association, registered the club colours as dark blue, light

blue and white. At the 1914 AGM it was decided to do away with the green fees as Mr Sellick and Mr Fuller offered to arrange a concert and Mr T. Walters was to hold a bioscope show to raise funds. This together with half the funds raised by serving refreshments would cover this income. The other half of the refreshment fund would be kept towards the building of a third green. In 1950 the third green was opened by the then Mayor Mr J. Levy. In 1912 Dr MacPherson donated a floating trophy for the Pairs competition and in 1929 the Inggs Trophy was donated as a competition to be played for against the other clubs of the Eastern Province Bowling Association at Uitenhage, annually. These trophies are still competed for today. The longest serving President was Mr W.B. Anderson who was in office from 1925-1933 and again in 1936. For some reason unknown in 1953 the President, Mr J. Reid and members decided to approach the municipality to re-site the club to Scheepers Square, a property which was left to the municipality,

in perpetuity for recreational purposes. In July 1958 a loan was obtained from the municipality for £400 for the construction of the “Inggs” and “Chase” greens and a clubhouse. On 14 November 1966 the loan was increased for the construction of a third green “President” and extensions to the clubhouse. In 1992 D. Scholl was the club’s longest playing member while Mr Hickson was the club’s oldest playing member. Until 1998 the Men’s and Women’s section ran concurrently but autonomously. In 1998 an amalgamation of the two sections took place. The first President of the combined sections was Mr H. Timms. After his death, while still in office, the reins were taken up by Mrs H. Hurter. The Club’s youngest members are Antoné Schwartz (18) and her brother Alex Schwartz (20) an EP player. The oldest active member is Mr C. Chaplin (93). The club salutes all its staunch members both past and present, for their loyal support over the generations for the betterment of the society and sport!

The celebration weekend will include rugby coaching clinics. Trevor Leander chairperson of the Club said “Carlos Spencer, a former All Black

and currently one of the coaches of the Lions, the 2011 Curry Cup champions, is liaising with us and want to bring four players of the 2011 Rugby World Cup winning team to Uitenhage. It has not yet been confirmed.” The Uitenhage All Black Supporters Club is newly established in October 2011 and has 120 registered members.

Klawerjas teams’revvedup’ The Volkswagen Uitenhage Klawerjas Union now boasts its own teams such as the Polo Cats K.C., Scirocco Wild Cards K.C. and Jetta Kings K.C. which are revving up competition in this popular card game. Most of the union’s members are employees at Volkswagen of South Africa with some of them in senior positions. The Klawerjas Championship Tournament was rocked when Polo Cats K.C. under

leadership of Orlando Kerridge, won the elusive Champ of Champs trophy for the third time in a row. To add to this they also scored the highest board score and table scores for which they received trophies which were all sponsored by Spar. Polo Cats K.C. was merciless and beat all 11 opposition teams with an average of more than 100 points per game. “As this has never happened before, it has now been

written in the history books of the South African Klawerjas Board of Control,” said Rodda Thomas, spokesperson of the union. Polo Cats K.C. scored 110-66 over Jetta Kings K.C. The Coupé Terminators K.C. collected 88-74 over Sciroccco Wild Cards K.C. Volkswagen K.C. played a 80-80 draw against Citi Golf Warriors K.C. Seven’s rugby action at Bay stadium ALGOA STEEL The Nelson Mandela Bay South Africa Sevens will kick-off on 9 December at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and is regarded as the biggest rugby party of the year with 48 hours of non-stop entertainment both on and off the field. Three former Springbok sevens players, Mzwandile Stick, Mpho Mbiyozo and Fabian Juries – all hailing from the Eastern Cape will assist in tournament promotions in an effort fill as many seats as possible on each day of the event in the 45 000 seater stadium. Stick and Mbiyozo were part of the first SA team to win the World Series title in 2009 while Juries is one of the leading sevens internationals of all time. “Fabba” as he is affectionately known to rugby fans, ended his sevens career as the third highest series points scorer and has scored the most sevens points for South Africa.

The new home of the SA Sevens is currently the home of the EP Kings who play in the Absa Currie Cup 1st division. Sixteen teams will participate. SARU has worked closely with the Metro and the Eastern Province Rugby as well as other key stakeholders to put together an exciting line-up of events in the week leading up to this eagerly awaited tournament. A coaching clinic will be held in the stadium on Tuesday, 6th December and this will be followed by a Tag Rugby competition. The top teams will get a fantastic opportunity to show off their skills during the finals which will be played on the Saturday. Also on Tuesday (6 Dec), the Springbok Sevens will give local fans a chance to meet their squad members during a team signing session at the Greenacres.
