ACCIDENTS: INNES STREET

‘Kyalami’ street takes out another two vehicles HEILIE COMBRINCK

peeding in Innes Street and drivers failing to stop at the Tomlinson Street stop sign have resulted in numerous serious collisions. The latest was on Wednesday, 20 November when a brand new BMW and a VW Polo were involved in a high impact collision. Residents from Innes Street are with their hands in their hair as neither their petition which they submitted in 2008 nor their ongoing complaints regarding speeding were adhered to by the powers to be. “It’s like Kyalami! When I heard the tyres screaming, the metal clash and then silence, I thought oh no ... not again!” said Katie Adams, a resident from Innes Street. Before the safety barrier was erected at the corner of Tomlinson and Innes Streets, Adams’ boundary wall had been demolished four times by vehicles involved in accidents

at this specific intersection. “I’ve seen suspects bursting through my boundary wall after being chased by police. I’ve seen primary school children flung against the wall after the bakkie they were transported in collided with another vehicle. “And during April I also became a victim when my car was written off by a driver speeding down Innes Street. The driver tried to overtake me whilst I was turning into my driveway,” said Adams. According to her, she has seen 12 accidents in front of her property during the past 18 years living in Innes Street. Another resident from Innes Street and owner of a playschool, Gouwa Lukie, previously reported to the UD News that it really is a problem to get access to Innes Street from her driveway as a result of the high speed of oncoming traffic. Councillor Pieter Terblanche said that “according to the Metro’s Integrated Develop-

ment Programme no funds are available for speed calming measures in Uitenhage. However after public participation and requests from Innes Street residents the matter was submitted as for priority funding. “Issues like these are exactly why Uitenhage needs a subcouncil in order to manage its own affairs,” said Terblanche. ;The two vehicles which last week Wednesday collided in Innes Street. Riebeek College choirs sing for charity Riebeek College’s national award-winning senior school choir as well as their primary school girls will hold their annual Carol Service in the Sholto McIntyre Hall at the school tonight at 18:00 for 18:30. This is the 65th year of this special event and this year the title of the service is “Glory to God”. Ten applicable scriptures will also be read by the girls. Riebeek College has been singing for charity for over a half a century and the girls have collected Christmas gifts which were placed under the Christmas tree in the foyer. The presents will be distributed by the

Uitenhage Child and Family Welfare Society. Tickets to attend the Carol Service are R20 and the proceeds will also be towards the Uitenhage Child and Family Welfare Society. The girls have been trained by the renowned René Zietsmann whose love of music and choir training is phenominal. She is accompanied by Patty Metcalf from Riebeek College. All interested are most welcome to attend and join in the fun as the girls lift their voices for charity in this wonderful, spiritual and inspirational performance.

Parties join hands in Free business workshop, favour of subcouncil breakfast and market HEILIE COMBRINCK Under the auspices of the Uitenhage Development Forum all political parties and civic organisations are having regular meetings to research and drive the issue of having a subcouncil for town. According to Councillor Pieter Terblanche, a subcouncil consists of a number of adjoining wards, clustered together and ward councillors and proportional councillors. “In terms of the Municipal Structures Act a subcouncil has the power to make recommendations on any matter affecting the area.

“A subcouncil can also in terms of law, be given delegated powers or be instructed to perform any duty of the Council,” said Terblanche. During the following weeks the Uitenhage Development Forum will embark on several projects in order to obtain a mandate from residents. A long walk will start from KwaNobuhle, Rosedale and the town area on Thursday, December 5th to the Town Hall. Rise in minimum wages for domestic workers

he minimum wage of domestic workers will rise from next month, Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant announced last Friday. From December 1, the minimum wage of those working more than 27 hours a week in metropolitan areas like Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth, Despatch & Uitenhage) will be R9.63 an hour, while that of their rural and small-town counterparts will be R8.30. “The minimum wages for domestic workers who work more than 27 hours per week in metropolitan areas (Area A) will be R9.63 hourly, R433.35 weekly (for a 45-hour week) and R1 877.70 monthly (for a 45-hour week). “In rural areas and small towns (Area B)

it will be R8.30 hourly, R373.50 weekly (for a 45-hour week) and R1 618.37 monthly (for a 45-hour week).” Area A is defined as all urban areas with municipalities, such as Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City, City of Tshwane, Emalahleni, Johannesburg, and others. Area B includes those municipalities not included in Area A. The wage adjustment was part of an annual binding determination made by the minister in terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. According to the statement, the minimum wages of domestic workers who work 27 hours or less a week will rise to: )(Area A) R11.27 hourly, R304.29 weekly

Rotary thanks public for supporting Tree of Joy

Opening of ‘Who’s Who’ art exhibition A showcase for local talent, the Who’s Who and What’s New? art exhibition will soon be on show at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum. Interested members of the public as well as those who submitted works are invited to attend the opening function on Wednesday, December 4 at 17:30 for 18:00. It is a group exhibition run annually by the Art Museum and designed to celebrate and promote the diversity of art produced

in Nelson Mandela Bay. It also aims to encourage new and upcoming artists and to give practising visual artists and groups much needed exposure. CAMPAIGN: 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM

No violence against women and children T

he 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children commenced on Monday and will come to a close on Tuesday, 10 December 2013. Preventing crimes against women and children is a strategic priority of the South African Police Service. During the above-mentioned period the police will conduct various activities. “The aim is to encourage women and children to report incidents of abuse and violence to the police and to inform women and children of their rights,” said Uitenhage police spokesperson, W/O Gerda Swart. The police have shifted their strategy for the better and for the smarter especially when it comes to effectively and efficiently addressing the vulnerability of children and women to senseless violence, abuse and sexu-

al molestation. “Eradication of women and children abuse is central to the fight against crime. This requires deliberate programmes of education and other measures to transform gender and family relations and also to ensure the safety and restore the dignity of victims. “The capacity and intelligence of the police in fighting crime lies within the communities they serve, because each and every law abiding member of society is a crime fighter,” said W/O Swart. The community are the eyes and ears for the police and therefore the police urge each person to not turn a blind eye and shield the criminal elements among them. “Let all work together and combat these heinous crimes committed against women and children.”

Taking the Lions Rally road to Cradock The Uitenhage Lions Club largest annual fundraiser, namely a motorcycle rally aptly named the Lion Rally, will be taking place in Cradock over the period 6-8 December. “We are proud to confirm that this will be the 20th Lion Rally we are hosting. It has grown from 135 entrants to more than 1 000 bikers last year,” said Lion Rally Convener Bokkie Oberholzer. All funds raised from the event will be used to improve the quality of life of those less fortunate than ourselves in and around the Uitenhage and Despatch area. “We also donate a percentage back to the community of Cradock to show our appreciation towards them for letting us invade their town.”

During the past 19 years an amount in excess of R750 000 has been distributed towards less fortunate people. A few examples of beneficiaries include donating winter jerseys to disadvantaged children, paying for eye tests and spectacles for the needy members of the community, supporting feeding schemes, retirement homes, schools and churches. “We are therefore appealing to both the local business as well as the biker community for their support in making the Lion Rally a huge success and in turn support the many of those who ‘We Serve’,” said Oberholzer. )All enquiries can be referred to Bokkie Oberholzer on boberholzer@go2uti.com or contact him on 0072 337 0212.

Lions build wall to protect children It is safety first for the Lions Club of Uitenhage and therefore they together with local businesses combined resources to erect a wall to enclose a church yard in protecting children during Sunday School activities. The Full Gospel Church of God, De Mist Assembly (VEK De Mist), is next to the busy Brickfields Road. “This exposes church members, especially the young and elderly, to possible motor vehicle accidents,” said Lion Denis Murphy

from the Uitenhage Lions Club. “The access by the public over weekends to the church yard was also being used for improper purposes, which exposed the children to possible health risk incidents.” To this effect the Uitenhage Lions Club and Beltek Construction combined resources to build a wall enclosing the church. According to Lions President, Barend Erasmus, the erection of the wall will provide all with a safer environment.

A talent show will be held this weekend as part of Oosterland Youth Centre’s fundraising efforts. The “Don’t Stop Believing Talent Show” is open to participants between the ages of 3 and 80 years. UD NEWS is looking for a baby to grace the front page of the last edition of the year – the Christmas edition on Thursday, December 19. Parents will be able to enter their babies by uploading a recent colour photo of their baby on www.ud-news.co.za. Entry closes at 16:00 on Thursday, December 5. The competition is aimed at making the day even more special for babies who are celebrating their first Christmas. Only babies born on and after November 23, 2012 are allowed to enter. Parents can enter only for the publication which is distributed in the area where they live. Other OP Koerante titles also holding the competition for readers in their respective distribution areas are PE Express, PE Express Indaba, Kouga Express (Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp), Sunshine Coast Express (Port Alfred and Grahamstown) and East London Express. All entrants will be featured on the respective publications’ websites and one overall website winner will also be chosen by readers’ votes from all the entrants. Voting will commence after the closing for entries and can be done via Facebook.

Prizes The winning baby of the UD News wins a first prize of R1 000 Baby City voucher and family photoshoot and photos by Jolene Oelofse Photography. ECOC finishes the last race of championship The East Cape Off-Road Club (ECOC) held its eighth race of the Data Scout Championship over the past weekend. The day brought forth great weather and excitement on which the competitors raced their final race for the year. The drivers enjoyed the complete off-road experience. Jeff Guscott and his navigator, Shean Bekker, proved to be the best of the day and came in first. Martin Kleingeld and his navigator, Ilze Grundlingh, took second place. The father and son team, Wian and Rehan <Jeff Guscott and Shean Bekker in action.

Strydom came in third. The day was overall a huge success. Rally car as prize for winning team The GMP Motor Sport final round of the Algoa Rally Club 50k Challenge will take place this weekend starting at the Hexagon B&B near Uitenhage, which will also serve as the service park between stages, as well as the start and finishing points. “The 50k Rally challenge is the first in the country and has attracted interest and sponsors from in and out of town,” said Neville Bartle from Algoa Rally Club. “The local rally scene has the most female competitors in the country and the rally cars consist of a variety of modern expensive cars and the older classics including a development class for beginners that happen to be one of the leading teams in contention for the prize.” Saturday evening one of the winning teams will be handed a R50 000 prize consisting of a Volkswagen Polo partly assembled rally car, with driver and navigator kit, including a custom digitally printed gazebo for the vehicle displaying the 2013 50k Rally Champion. The leading contenders are Jacques Louw driver, and Gabriel Groener navigator followed by Rikus Schmidt/Stephno Pietersa, Iddo Steyn/Mark Irvine. The remaining 20 competitors will be pushing the leaders to the limit for prize money paid out at R25 per point.

What has made this rally special is that all competitors have stood a chance to win the prize based on a fair system of points scoring for each class. The first car will be leaving the Hexagon tomorrow at 20:00 and the first stage will start at the Jagtvlakte power station. Spectators can view the cars in action from the power station or around the pan in the dark. This stage will be repeated on Saturday morning between 10:00–11:00. The rally will move between the Jagtvlakte and Scribante Race track along the Daniel Pienaar Road past Motherwell. )For more information on the rally visit www.algoarally.co.za

Gebore Louis Andreas Pepler op 30 Maart 1978, het in Pretoria grootgeword. Ná skool op Hoërskool Die Wilgers het hy vir nege maande in Rotterdam, Nederland rugby gespeel en daarna Boukunde en Konstruksiebestuur studeer. Hy was toe vir sewe jaar in die boubedryf voor hy ' n professionele sanger geword het. "Ek het maar altyd ' n kitaar saamgevat as ons gaan kamp het of om ' n vuur gekuier het," vertel Bok. In 2005 is hy deur Sean Else en Johan Vorster genader om hul platemaatskappy, Mozi Records, se eerste kunstenaar te word. ' n Album is opgeneem en as Bok van Blerk en die Mossies: Jy Praat Nog Steeds My Taal in Maart 2006 vrygestel. In Oktober word die album weer vrygestel maar hierdie keer is die titel De la Rey na aanleiding van die trefferliedjie wat stadig maar seker onder mense se velle begin kruip het. Die verkope van die album begin klim en dit word een van die grootste verkopers van 2007. Die verkope van die album is vandag net onder 200 000 wat dit een van die suksesvolste debuut albums ooit in Afrikaans maak. Bok ryg behoorlik die pryse in 2007 in. Hy wen drie Tempo-toekennings, vyf Vonktoekennings en die video van De la Rey wen die MK Musiekvideo van die Jaar-prys. In 2007 is Bok deel van Ons Vir Jou, ' n rugby album wat uitgereik is vir die Wêreldbekertoernooi wat uiteindelik deur Suid-Afrika gewen is. Die album is ' n reuse sukses met verkope van 90 000. Ná die sukses van De la Rey wat bykans 200 000 albums verkoop het, is Bok van Blerk terug met ' n nuwe album wat beloof om net so groot soos die vorige een te wees. Afrikanerhart is ' n album met vyftien oorspronklike snitte en wissel van sosiale kommentaar tot liedjies om op te jol. Die Afrikanerhart album het reeds dubbel Platinum status bereik. Bok het as sanger en liedjieskrywer baie gegroei sedert sy weghol debuut in 2006. D “ it was nodig dat ons so lank moes wag met ' n tweede album,”sê Bok. E “ k het in daardie tyd gegroei as kunstenaar en wou wag vir die regte tyd om ' n tweede album uit te bring. Ek is baie opgewonde oor die album en veral opgewonde oor die nuwe klank en neiging wat die album inslaan. Ons gaan vorentoe met hierdie album. Daar is van die liedjies wat snypunte aanraak waarby mense aanklank sal vind en daar is selfs ' n liefdes liedjie. Wie sou ooit kon raai dat Bok van Blerk ' n love song sal doen! Ons het hard gewerk aan die album en ek glo mense gaan dit net soveel,

DESPATCH RUGBY KLUB - Buitelug Fees RYK GESKIEDENIS VAN DIE DESPATCH RUGBY Despatch Rugby Club is gestig in 1945 en sederdien groei die span jaarliks sterker en sterkeren gaan van krag tot krag. Die dorp Despatch is baie gefokus op sport en dit bring die diverse gemeenskap saam as een. Die stadium is gewoonlik gepak vir enige sporttoernooi, veral die rugby seisoen, wat die belangeikste is. Die Despatch Rugby Klub is veral bekend vir sy lewering van profesiosionele spelers , selfs Springbokke en Mighty Eliphants! (Nou Kings)Dan praat ons nie eens van die spelers wat weg is uit Despatch en wat gespeel/speel vir die grootste Super 14 spanne in die land nie. Ons het ‘n langs lewende lid van die Despatch Club wat reeds 68 jaar ‘n lid van Despatch se wonderlike Rugby Klub is, Mr. Boet van Rensburg 2014 is ook ‘n baie spesiale jaar vir Despatch Rugby , dit is nie net hulle 70ste verjaardsdag nie, maar hulle het ook die eer om tans die verdedigende span te wees van die CELL C Community Cup. Wenners 2013. Dit is ‘n groot viering vir die Klub want hulle het minimale hulpbronne gehad vir die afgelope paar jaar tot en met 2 jaar terug toe die huidige president sy hart en beursie oopgemaak het en baie van die spelers terug gewin het en in die tydperk van 2 jaar het hulle bewys hulle is die top SA Rugby Klub. Dit lei nou tot wonderlike geleenthede in 2014 omrede die Klub, as die wenner van die 2013 CELL C Community Cup hulle die eerste wedstryd in Despatch sal speel op die 8ste Maart 2013 en die wedstryd op M-NET Super Sport lewendig uitgesaai sal word , sowel as 3 ander wedstryde wat gedurende die Cup Challenge ook “live” uitgesaai word op M-NET.
