Wildsfees has charities at heart Proceeds from the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees are ploughed back into the Sundays River community through tourism promotion and support for a number of charities and support organisations. Organisers of the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees handed over R17 000 worth of blankets, toys and treats to five needy crèches in the Sunday River Valley area including Neskuikens crèche, Aqua Park Edu Care centre, Khanyise crèche, Olie Oliphant crèche and Nolukhanye crèche. “We don’t get any funding from government and rely on donations from the public. These toys, pencils and blankets will really help us offer the kids a better education,” said Susan Pietersen from Aqua Park Edu Care centre which caters for approximately 80 children aged between two and eight years old. The Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees began 10 years ago and has grown into one of the most successful community festivals in the country. “The Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees is run as a non-profit organisation and contributes directly to the upliftment of the local community,” says festival director Jenni Hons-

bein. Proceeds from the festival are also used to support the Kirkwood tourism office during the year. Kirkwood Mayor Mbulelo Kebe and Councillor Frans Adams assisted with the handovers. Community worker, Muffy Miller also helped in the handovers. Miller opened the first crèche in the Langbos township in 1990 and has been working tirelessly to set up and fund crèches throughout the Addo and Kirkwood area. She is assisted by the Mayibuye Development Trust. The crèches and care centres receive very little government support, and rely on volunteers and sponsors to look after and educate the children. “At one of the crèches, we found babies sleeping on cold tiles in a shack. Thanks to Absa, we were able to provide sponge mattresses for them. We are humbled to be able to make a difference in the lives of these children who are at risk,” says Honsbein. )The next Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees will take place from 29 June to 01 July, 2012.

Yolande Wals, was te geskok om met die media te praat, het Venter gesê. Wals se pa, mnr. Gary Wals, werk in SaoediArabië en is op pad terug na Suid-Afrika. Wals het Sondag sy 22ste verjaardag gevier. Mnr. Dennis Johannie, die president van die Christelike Motorfietsklub in die Baai, het gesê Wals het ’n maand gelede aangedui dat hy graag by die motorfietsklub wou aansluit. “Hy was Sondag saam met ’n groep van ons op ’n uitstappie en hy het dit baie geniet. Toe ek die nuus oor sy dood gekry het, het ek groot geskrik,” het Johannie gesê. Olivier het gesê die bestuurder van die bakkie en sy twee passasiers is met ligte beserings na ’n hospitaal geneem. Geen ander voertuie was by die ongeluk betrokke nie.

RICHARD ROBERTS Vriende en familie van ’n “vriendelike, lewenslustige” verkoopsman by Williams Hunt op Uitenhage was Dinsdag verslae oor sy dood in ’n motorfietsongeluk vroeër die oggend. Mnr. Stefan Wals (22) van Sunridgepark in Port Elizabeth is omstreeks 07:25 op die toneel dood toe hy teen ’n bakkie gebots het. Die ongeluk het op die Cuyler Manor-pad tussen Despatch en Uitenhage gebeur. Wals se rooi-en-wit Yamaha R6-motorfiets is erg beskadig en het ’n diep duik in die agterste deur aan die bestuurderskant van ’n dubbelkajuit-silwer Mitsubishi Colt-bakkie gelos. Volgens ao. Bikers did a good job of home makeover The Workshop Crew MCC have used their funds raised from their motorbike rally in 2010 to do two home makeovers. The homes are two adjoining semidetached homes in Haupt Street, Sydenham, Port Elizabeth. “The Workshop Crew MCC would like to thank the two main sponsors which assisted us with this venture. Tiny’s Pub & Grub paid for the bathroom makeovers and Medal Paints donated almost all the paint for the project,” said Rob McOwen, Vice President of Workshop Crew MCC. The total cost of the project was in

excess of R45 000. Workshop Crew rally in Jeffreys Bay is an annual event that in conjunction with a bikers sleepover at the Thornhill Hotel is used to raise funds for community based projects. At their Rally in 2009 an amount of R26 000 was donated by the bikers in the tent on the Saturday night in a matter of 20 minutes to assist a family in Jeffreys Bay. “The money was raised for a cochlea implant operation for a 10 year old girl who was born deaf. This project was run by the Couga Lions Club in Jeffreys Bay,” said McOwen.

The “Red Dog Party” bikers sleepover is this Saturday at the Thornhill Hotel. The entry fee is R40 per person and is open to all bikers who like to party. Neighbourhood watch for Uitenhage? In order to intensify the assistance in their partnership with the local police, the Uitenhage Community Policing Forum is planning to start a neighbourhood watch in town. “To ensure that we stay on the right side of the law, we have arranged for a three hour training session to aquaint ourselves with the do’s and do nots,” said Arnold Niemand, Chairperson of the Uitenhage CPF. A retired Colonel, Dave Moorehouse, will be presenting the training session in the Uitenhage SAPS conference room from 09:00 to 12:00 on Saturday, 29th October. Further details on the way forward thereafter will be provided after the training session. “We appeal to all citizens of our town who want to make a difference in assisting the police with their fight against crime and anti-social activities which are so prevalent in our society today, to please attend the training session,” said Niemand. Ben du Toit met die trofeë wat Bakgat Orkes gewen het. Foto: Heilie Combrinck Die Bakgat Orkes het die afdeling vir moderne opkomende musiek in die kompetisie van die Nasionale Boeremusiekgilde in Kaapstad gewen. Meer as 20 boereorkeste van oor

die land het in verskillende kategorieë aan die kompetisie deelgeneem. Die kompetisie is op 8 Oktober in Kuilsrivier beslis. Dit volg nadat die orkes ook as streekswenners

aangewys is tydens die uitdunne op Mosselbaai. Nog ‘n pluimpie vir die orkes is dat twee lede aangewys is as beste musikante. Enriko Kolesky het die trofee gekry vir die beste klawerbordspeler jonger as 25 jaar en Divan Barnard die trofee vir die beste konsertinaspeler jonger as 25 jaar. Die Bakgat Orkes speel nog net sowat een jaar saam en bestaan uit lede tussen 16 en 60 jaar oud. Eersgenoemde is die konsertinaspeler Barnard, ’n leerder aan die Hoërskool Framesby. Hy speel nou sowat drie jaar konsertina. Op tromme is Heinrich Kruger (18). Die trekklavier en klawerbordspeler is Kolesky, ’n 22 jarige musiekonderwyser aan die Laerskool Moregrove. Op baskitaar is Kobus Gouws en die orkesleier is musiekveteraan Ben “Kitaar” du Toit. Die orkes het reeds vanjaar ’n DVD bekend gestel met die titel Bakgat Orkes 2011. Op die DVD het hulle gebruik gemaak van ’n genooide saksofoonspeler om dit ’n bietjie meer variasie te gee. Hulle speel tradisionele boeremusiek sowel as ‘n verskeidenheid

In general here are some tips supplied by Africhem on chemical use: • Always wash your hands before and after handling chemicals • Never use metalic utensils, use only plastic, glass, china or enamelware and make sure it is clean and dry • Add chemicals to water - never add water to chemicals • Add chemicals directly to the pool water (never while swimmers are using the pool) • Never combine the material from old and new containers • Do not inhale chemical fumes When it comes to the storage of chemicals the following tips are noteworthy: • Keep the original lids tightly on all chemical containers • Do not stack different chemicals on top of one another • Store pool chemicals in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area • Do not store chemicals near the pool heater • Keep acids away from other chemicals • Keep all chemicals out of reach of children • Separate the different forms of chemicals • Wash your hands thoroughly after using chemicals

Plenty of action at rally mall Fountains Mall, Jeffreys Bay, will be the centre of attraction this Saturday with rally cars participating in special stages around the car park area during the day. To keep the spectators entertained, drifting cars will give demonstrations between the rally stages, with smoking tyres and sideways action from Wayne Smith and Anre Cordier. The Rally cars will consist of three classes with a variety of vehicles which include the Volkswagen RA5 Junior Rally Team, S20 modified,/Retro pre-1985 and Luk coastal challenge. Drivers and navigators from 17 years of age to 79, will be competing in all makes of vehicles from pre-1985 to modern saloon cars rigged out for gravel and tar. The gravel stages will follow the service park break along Jubilee Road and will be known as the Detroit Motors special stage and then on to Die Glen farm and R330. The rally will be repeated along these stages during the day ending at Fountains Mall with the prize giving at the Tart & Roses. The contest for overall honours is expected between S20 Nico Smith and Stephno Pieterse, respective driver and navigator in a VW Polo, Rikus Smit and RA5 class leader Devon Alchin and Mark Irvine with Ross Bartle and Joubert van der Walt chasing hard for championship points in this penultimate round of the championship. Prestige watches from Gabriel Jewellers will be awarded to the winners on the day. Luk Coastal challenge championship leader Peter Twiss, will be the man to beat with Ex formula one driver Lionel Rowe 79 years of age and evergreen navigator John Finlayson, 71, current karting campaigner who will be navigating, looking forward to showing the youngsters the way. The Rally starts at 09:30 on Saturday and will finish around 16:30. Spectators are welcome, there is no entrance charge.
