nitrans handed over more than R500 000 worth of equipment to the Addo Elephant National Park Rangers which will assist in equipping them to battle any poaching attempts that may come their way. The sponsorship was facilitated by the SANParks Honorary Rangers, a group of volunteers who raise funds and provide services in support of South African National Parks (SANParks). The handover, which took place at Addo’s Main Camp, saw equipment such as binoculars, tents and sleeping bags, backpacks and chest webbing handed over to the park rangers.
“We are extremely proud and see it as a privilege, through our donation of equipment, to be part of this counter-pouching efforts. We want to thank the honorary rangers for the important role they fulfil at the park,” said Linda Joyce from Unitrans. Norman Johnson, Addo Elephant National Park Manager, said “We can not deal with this poaching threat on our own. We need the partnerships of business, private enterprises, government and the honorary rangers. Together we can make a difference. “We really appreciate this donation of much needed equipment and will utilize it to the best.” According to Megan Taplin, marketing and communications manager at Addo Elephant National Park, the rangers will use the equipment during day and night patrols aimed at preventing potential poachers from
entering the park. “The much-needed equipment comes at a time when the countrywide rhino poaching crisis has resulted in a battle led by various conservation and law enforcement authorities against the poaching syndicates. “Figures issued by the Department of Environmental Affairs last week confirmed a total of 225 rhinos killed illegally since the beginning of 2012. During this same period, 148 suspects have been arrested for crime related to rhino poaching,” said Taplin. The total of rhinos killed during the year has risen to 227 after the killing of two black rhinos during the weekend at the Madikwe Nature Reserve in North West. Unitrans has also sponsored various monitoring systems in Addo Elephant National Park, including cameras, which are placed in the field to
detect threats to wildlife in the park. “The sponsorship also covers helicopter flying time to aid monitoring of the park’s wildlife.” At the handover, some of Addo Elephant National Park’s 88 rangers demonstrated their patrolling skills. The sponsorship also covers advanced training for selected rangers over the next few years to ensure they have the most superior abilities to target any threats. According to Taplin the handover forms part of the ongoing national sponsorship agreement between Unitrans Volkswagen & Audi Division and the SANParks Honorary Rangers, which was officially launched in September 2011. For each new and used vehicle retailed at the 13 participating Unitrans dealerships, R500 is donated to assist counter-poaching efforts in SA National Parks.

The EC Doll & Toy Fair is being held every fourth year and will attract collectors from afar. The province was always known for its exclusive private collections of dolls and toys and Port Elizabeth during the 1960s was known as the only place in the county with a “dolls hospital”. “Although it is a small group of people who are members of the club, they are very active and have exquisite collections. It will not all be at the fair, but those interested in antique dolls and toys will surely enjoy this fair,” said Sarene Carter, a keen doll collector from Uitenhage. Also present at the fair will be the Miniatures Club. The fair will be held from 08:30 to 13:30. Refreshments will be on sale.

Mini circles vs Roundabouts

Roundabout Then there is the roundabout which is larger than the mini-circle and a type of circular intersection that reduces potential conflicts between vehicles and improves the efficiency of the intersection, according to www.arrivealive.co.za.
But who would have ever thought that probably the most common shape of all would cause so much confusion – the circle! Not just any circle, but traffic circles. The UD News decided to investigate this issue and to educate local road users on how to use circles. First readers should notice that there are two kinds of circles. One is known as a mini-circle and the other is the roundabout. Mini circles According to www.walkinginfo.org/engineering, the mini-circle is “an intersection improvement as well as a traffic-calming device and can take the place of a four-way stop or yield signs”. The purpose of the mini-circle is to manage traffic at intersections where volumes do not warrant a stop sign or traffic lights. How to use it: The first vehicle to cross the line has the right of way – so it really works on the same principle as a

How to use it: “Drivers entering a roundabout shall turn to the left and shall travel round the roundabout in a clockwise direction, and it imposes a mandatory requirement that drivers entering a roundabout shall yield right-of-way to traffic approaching from the right,” states www.circles.org.za. This means that drivers approaching a roundabout must give right-of-way to traffic coming from the right. But how does one tell the difference between a mini-circle and a roundabout? Look at the signs. The roundabout’s sign takes the shape of a blue circle indicating clockwise travelling. The mini-circle’s sign is an upside down triangle also indicating clockwise travelling.

Severing rental contract via SMS
T
his week, the Property Poser panel deals with a rental issue from a reader whose landlord sent her an SMS instructing her to vacate his property by the end of the month. She admits that, since her husband has been retrenched, they have been in arrears with the rental. The couple had offered to repay the amount in instalments or set up a debit order, but received no response. The reader would like to know whether they could give their landlord one month’s notice or whether they should wait for him to obtain a court order evicting them. According to Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Nelson Mandela Bay, the non-payment of rental means the reader is already in breach of the lease agreement.

eneral Motors South Africa (GMSA) and its Isuzu brand are proud to present the 11th Isuzu 4x4 Challenge to be held at the Lookout in Kirkwood on Saturday, 30 June. Organised by the Eastern Cape 4X4 Club, this year’s event will once again see a total of 50 vehicles participating in the following classes: Class A modified with diff lock; Class B with no diff lock (open diff modified); Class C1; Class C2 Production vehicles and Class D with two wheel drive buggies. According to the chairman of the Eastern Cape 4x4 Club, Francois Schellingerhout, the Production Class has become one of the most popular classes with 10 vehicles confirmed to participate in this year’s challenge and entrants are coming from as far as Cape Town and Johannesburg. “We hold this event in a contained area with ten obstacles courses to complete. Driver skills and vehicle capabilities are put
through the test when each driver navigates his vehicle through ten tough obstacles without touching the stakes,” said Schellingerhout. Last year’s overall winners, Grant McCleery and Ryan Visagie, representing the Isuzu OffRoad Academy, will be defending their title against fierce competition in their Isuzu 3,0l Double Cab. The Challenge starts at 09:00 and the cut-off time of the competition is at approximately 15:00 followed by the prize giving. Proceeds raised at the event will be donated to the Kirkwood High School and St Reginald’s Primary School. These schools will be present at the event selling eats in an effort to raise further funds.
