‘Cinderalla Rebooted’ to hit the stage
Local prominent professional and business people are some of the stars that will be seen in a pantomime staged by the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South during October. The pantomime “Cinderalla Rebooted” will be held in order for the Club to raise funds to provide services to the needy and to serve its community. Rotary Clubs are among the oldest service clubs and have existed worldwide for more than a century. There are more than 33 000 Rotary clubs in 200 countries worldwide. Rotary is an organisation of
It’s Spring time and Muir College will host its annual Spring Festival on Saturday in celebration of the new season! As part of the fun the popular Afri-Save Marathon will start at 06:00, followed by a 10km run at 07:00 and a 5km fun run at 08:00. Entry forms for the marathon and fun run can be collected from Brockett’s Sports in Uitenhage and at the Muir College office. Registration will take place on Friday from 17:00-19:00 at Muir College, as well as Saturday morning from 04:30 (marathon), 06:00 (10km) and 07:00 (5km). The entry fees are as follows: Marathon R65 (R30 for age 65+), 10km R30 (R15 for age 65+) and 5km fun run at R15 per person. The public is invited to visit Muir and join in on the fun and entertainment which stretches from a tea garden, soccer tournament to paint ball and food stalls. Former Springboks to visit Despatch
LOSLIT DAG IS HIER!
Springboks, John Allan and Pieter Muller are visiting Despatch on Friday, 9 September. Allan, former Natal captain and Springbok hooker is currently the CEO of the SA Rugby Legends. Muller, former Springbok centre with 33 tests was part of the 1995 winning World Cup team. These Springboks will be sharing some humoristic tales from the days they played as well as share opinions of what they think will happe n in this years World Cup.

VW logo day to celebrate 60th Reaction has been good regarding the planned VW Logo Day which will be held at Frans Conradie primary school at Despatch on the 24th September. According to the organiser, Hennie du Toit, the event has received almost 400 hits on the website of www. aircooledvwsa.co.za and people have indicated that they will be coming down in convoys from Gauteng, Bloemfontein, East London and even from the Western Cape. The event is held to commemorate the anniversary of the first production VW Beetle that came off the production line at Volkswagen in Uitenhage on 31 August 1951. All rear-engined aircooled VW vehicles can enter, regardless of
their shape, size or condition. All vehicles will gather at the VW AutoPavilion from 08:15. At 09:00 the parade will leave the AutoPavilion and follow a preplanned route through Uitenhage and then move on to Despatch, where upon arrival at the school, the building of the VW logo will take place. There will be food stalls and a lucky draw for all participants. The entry fee at the gate is R10 adults and scholars free. “We are hoping for a huge presence of Volkswagens and the support of local businesses in our community. Theft of motor vehicles a concern Uitenhage and Kamesh police are concerned regarding the number of motor vehicles that are being stolen from their policing precinct. In Kamesh it has been noticed that older models of cars and bakkies are stolen. The common models are Izuzu LDVs, Mazda 323 and the old Ford Meteors. “In most of the cases, vehicles are stolen from the premises of the owners. Police have established that even though car owners have garages, they do not bother to park their cars in the garages before retiring for the night,” said police spokesperson, Lt.Col. Priscilla Naidu. In many cases, cars are parked in front of the garages. Vehicles are parked also outside the premises and
on the pavements. Those vehicles that are stolen from inside the premises, are taken from the driveways and in front of the garages. “Even though police have made arrests and recovered some of the stolen vehicles, the increase in this type of crime is continuing. Police are urging the public to take responsibility of their possessions and to take the necessary precautions in safeguarding their property and assets. “During night patrols, police have on numerous occasions left warning notes on the windscreens of motor vehicles for the car owner to take note. Valuable property is left, clearly visible on the back seat of vehicles. This attracts the attention of any opportunistic person,” said Lt.Col. Naidu.
The public are also warned not to park their vehicles in an isolated parking area in shopping centres or other public places. Park as close to the other vehicles as possible. Many centres have car guards. Make use of them. If there are no car guards in that particular area, rather park as close to your venue as possible. Car guards sometimes only guard a specific area in a parkade and do not bother to concentrate on unguarded parking areas. Criminals sometime are aware of this and use this to their advantage. An urgent appeal is made to the community to work together with the police and to help them prevent crime escalating in their neighbourhood.

Sang- en dansafrigting is gedoen deur Erna Cloete en Kareen Breytenbach. “Real Life” dramas sal sorg vir heelwat verrassings en baie glimlagte op die gesigte van die gehoor.
Kunswerke van deelnemers in die kuns-kategorie sal ook uitgestal word. Kaartjies is bekikbaar by die skool teen slegs R10 per persoon. Geen kaartjies sal by die deure beskikbaar wees nie. Die vertoning begin stiptelik om 17:30 by Bergsig Skool op Uitenhage. Parkering sal beskikbaar wees op die skoolterrein. Eric Wood, founder of the Uitenhage Kennel Club, passed away at the age of 78. Wood hails from Redcar up on the cold north east coast of England. After a spell in Cyprus while doing his National Service, he acquired a taste for sunshine, a very rare commodity in that part of England and like many other Englishmen he packed-up and moved his family to sunny South Africa

where he worked at Uitenhage’s VW factory from 1969 until he retired in 1993. Wood was a man of many hobbies and pastimes of which chess was his favourite. In late 1978, he, with a book on dog training in one hand and lead in the other hand, could be seen on various plots of grass around Uitenhage enthusiastically training his trusty Samoyed. Other like-minded dog owners soon joined him and it wasn’t long before the Uitenhage Kennel Club was founded. Sadly several years back Wood suffered a slight stroke and from then on his days on the field among the other handlers and their dogs were sadly numbered. Under the guidance of enthusiastic committees he was able to watch his brainchild grow to become one of the leading showholding dog clubs in the country. Fortunately last year Wood was able to attend an evening function with all the judges participating in the club’s 15th annual championship show which had some 450 dogs on show. Wood passed-away on the 24th July 2011.

Local hospital more ‘baby friendly’ Uitenhage Provincial Hospital is in the process of becoming a Baby Friendly Hospital. This accreditation is only possible when all the standards set by the World Health Organization and Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) are met. The core of this process is breastfeeding. The National Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, announced on 23 August 2011 again that “No other infant feeding option may be promoted and that all babies must be breastfed.” According to Mrs Anna-Marth Goosen, Area Manager: Maternity at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital, “The assistance of the entire community is needed for this project to be a success.” This includes that patients coming to hospital must: •Be prepared to breastfeed their infants from birth •Continue with exclusive breastfeeding for at least six months •Not mix breastfeeding with bottle / formula feeds and dummies •Babies who suckle from the breast will be cup fed. Expressed breast milk will be fed to the infant in a cup.
•Mothers who are HIV positive will be provided with antiretroviral treatment free of charge to lower the chances of transmission of the virus in the breast milk. To access this, the mother must book at a basic antenatal clinic before she is 20 weeks pregnant. No infant bottles and dummies will be allowed on the hospital premises from now on. “Please assist us to avoid conflict regarding the bottles. Children under 12 years are not allowed to visit patients in the hospital,” said Mrs Goosen. The reason for the above is as follows: •Children are susceptible to infection and they may become very sick after visiting sick patients in hospital •Children are carriers of diseases as the play on the ground, in the soil, climb under and over objects and do not constantly wash their hands. Please leave children under 12 years at home while visiting the doctor at the hospital or sick patients during visiting time.

Dower celebrates its 90th year Dower Practising School, one of the oldest schools in the western region of Uitenhage, presents a carnival on Saturday in celebration of the school’s 90th anniversary. Dower Memorial Practising School was founded on 15th April 1921 by Sir Nicholas Frederic De Waal. Its name is derived from the Dower Teaching College which it previously housed. As a primary school, it has a rich and colourful history and many successful products of Uitenhage have their roots firmly grounded in the education received
at this school. The carnival will be held on Saturday and all funds generated will be directed back into the school to assist with the learning and teaching process. Two of the main objectives are the building of a computer lab and school hall. A 90th anniversary special edition school magazine will also be published in celebration of this milestone. The public is invited to come and celebrate Dower’s 90th year together with parents, pupils and former pupils.

VW turns 60! Sixty years ago, the first Volkswagen Beetle was produced in Uitenhage, South Africa. The date 31 August 1951 is a significant date both for Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) and the many South Africans who have either owned one of its cars or been employed at the Company. Since then, VWSA has produced over 2.8 million vehicles, been awarded numerous export orders by its parent company, won a number of local and international awards and currently produces South Africa’s two topselling passenger vehicles. Volkswagen Group South Africa Managing Director, David Powels, said the Company has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1946 with the establishment of South African Motor Assemblers and Distributors (SAMAD), which produced 12 Studebakers a day, to the world class factory it is today – producing an average of 600 vehicles daily. Powels said the original management, in the form of SAMAD’s first MD, Melville Steele Brooks and Chairman, Baron Klaus von Oertzen, could not have predicted how Volkswagen would grow from a small Company with big dreams, and prosper over the next 60 years – not only building Volkswagens and Audis, but also Austins, Volvo’s and Jeeps. Since its introduction in 1951 until the end of production in 1979, 290 000 of the iconic Beetles were sold in South Africa. For 11 of those 28 years, it was the top selling vehicle in the country. Another proudly South African car, the Golf 1, was launched in 1979, and until the end of its life cycle at the end of 2009, 517 384 A1 Golfs had rolled off the production line in Uitenhage. These humble cars became giants in the motoring world, and would define generations of South Africans. Volkswagen’s advertising campaigns over the years also speak volumes. Who could forget the famous “Red, Yellow, Blue Citi Golf” TV campaigns, or the aerial views of thousands of its staff and another of VW vehicles - sprawled out in the shape of the company logo - in the “People’s Cars” television ads, or of the father proudly handing over the keys to his beloved Beetle to his son? Not only has it been producing “People’s Cars” for six decades, but VWSA also has a proud history of putting people first – from having trained and qualified the country’s first Black artisans in the 1980’s to providing continuous training to its staff, suppliers and dealers today. Over the years, the Volkswagen Brand has won six consecutive rally championships, three Dakar rallies, put the first Black rally champion on the podium and won the South African Car of the Year award two years in a row. “Once only producing for the local automo-

Currently in South Africa, a 5 000-strong workforce produces about 600 Polo Vivo’s and Polo’s – the country’s two top selling passenger vehicles – daily. These two vehicles have helped position VWSA as the market leader for four months of 2011. “The Volkswagen Group has been in South Africa for 60 years, and has evolved and changed with the times. We now have to maintain our momentum, and look forward to the next 60 years,” said Powels.
