cent wild fires in the Western Cape emphasized the importance of a well-structured network of dedicated fire fighters. Uitenhage has since the beginning of last December, for the first time in the town’s history, been the temporary home of such a team of brave fire fighters from Working On Fire (WOF). WOF is a government-funded, job creation programme, implemented by the FFA

From May to October the WOF teams relocate covering the areas from the South Coast, grasslands of the Free State all the way up north to the forests of Mpumalanga. November is normally regarded as a resting period, when equipment and aircraft are serviced before moving back to the Cape. “Pilots of spotter planes are vital eyes in the sky. During a wild fire we constantly have to communicate with ground based commanders as well as with chopper pilots combatting the wild fire,” said Venter. The fire fighter teams consist of both vehicle transported hand crews as well as helicopter transported teams, also known as Helitack (helicopter attacked). According to Venter there are 28 wild land fire fighting teams across the Eastern Cape with each team consisting of 24 members. Wings & Wheels Festival The Wings & Wheels Festival and Doug Davidson Memorial Airshow will be held at the Uitenhage Airfield on 27 & 28 March. Various aircraft will be on display and there will be lots of outdoor activities and exhilarating flying in the sky. One of the highlights of the festival will be a race between South African oval track racing champion Pieta Victor in his V8 American Saloon against one of the aircraft. Remembering Allan Hendrickse 10 years on HEILIE COMBRINCK

llan Hendrickse! “Oh yes, I knew him” or “I remember him, he was the man who went swimming on the beach for whites only.” According to the late Reverend Allan Hendrickse’s son, Peter Hendrickse, the abovementioned is a very common response that he gets from people. “They remember his swim at the ‘Whites Only’ beach in defiance of beach apartheid. I, however remember the family man, teacher, minister and politician. The loving husband who bought roses for his wife every Friday. He loved my mother - his friend, lover and confidante -unconditionally. She was his biggest supporter and defender,” said Peter Hendrickse from Cape Town. On this coming Monday, March 16th, it will be ten years since Reverend Allan Hendrickse passed-away. He is buried at Jubilee Park Cemetery in Uitenhage. “I miss him so much. Ten years is a long time without him. Allan was the love of my life. I was blessed with 48 happy, unforgettable married years with him,” said his wife, Terry Hendrickse, who last year moved to Cape Town. “As a person who defied beach apartheid, I would like to see Kings Beach renamed ‘Allan Hendrickse Beach’. The Special Branch threatened and followed me, but I was never afraid of them, because I believed in and supported the same struggle for freedom as Allan,” said Terry Hendrickse. As minister Rev. Allan Hendrickse followed in his father’s footsteps and in 1972 was inaugurated as Chairman of the United Congregational Churches in Southern Africa. According to Peter, his father served Dale Street and Uitenhage Congregational churches for 54 years, not once drawing a salary from his churches. He also served 12 to 15 outstations during this time. “We travelled over hills and down dales to Baviaanskloof despite the floods, through the night to Steytlerville from Upington, always for the same reason ‘because the people are waiting for communion’. “When doctors wanted to admit him to hospital, he told them he needed first to go and serve Communion and Baptism in Hankey. He died three days later at the Port Elizabeth Airport, on his way to hospital,” said Peter Hendrickse. The late Reverend Hendrickse will also be remembered as a high school science teacher who believed in education for liberation. He believed that a teacher needs to know the circumstances of his students. According to Peter, many forgot that his father started the first high school in Uitenhage for black students namely, Limekaya High School, at the request of community leaders.

In Rev. Hendrickse’s last speech in the old Parliament on 20 December 1993 he said: “When I look back, I say it has been worthwhile. Despite all my inadequacies. As a person, despite the criticism, attacks and character assassinations. Today I am still what I am. And while God is God, I will remain what I am. I am here, because I believe in the freedom of man, the dignity of every person and his right to live as God wants him to live. Free at last! I am free at last.” Terry Hendrickse is currently writing a book “My life with Allan Hendrickse” and although a Capetonian now, she said she will always treasure happy memories of Uitenhage.

There are two brand new events on the Eastern Province Athletics calendar, each with a very different profile. The NMB Municipality has committed to a 100% sponsorship for both of the races, which take place on March 22nd and March 27th respectively. The Uitenhage Human Race (30km) in itself is enormously significant as March 21st is Human Rights Day and sees the 30th anniversary of the Langa Massacre. The event held on the 22nd is in commemoration of this poignant part of the history. The start/finish is at the Rosedale Rugby Stadium in KwaLanga, Uitenhage. The route was identified by Mike Mbambani and Alan Taylor, legends in the running fraternity in Nelson Mandela Bay. The route takes runners past the Kwalanga Massacre Memorial site to Despatch and back. It starts at 06:00. There is also a 5km fun run which starts at 07:00 as well as a Kiddies Jog which will start at 08:00. Medals will be awarded to all finishers in all three races, including the kiddies! The three clubs that form the Local Organising Committee are Etinarha Athletics Club, VW Athletics Club and Despatch Athletics Club. Elma Saalman, ‘n stigterlid van die organisasie het gese, Monique Haven is ‘n gemeenskaps-inisiatief en hulle wil graag samewerking bevorder tussen die dorp se welsynsdienste, die plaaslike polisie en gemeenskap. Die UDDI het in 2014 hulle gewig agter Monique Haven gegooi en die projek finansieël ondersteun. In 2002 tydens Monique Barends se moord, was Elma werksaam by Despatch Primêre Skool se snoepie. “Die nuus het die gemeenskap geskok. Ek kon dit nie glo nie! Ek het besluit ons moet iets groot doen soos ’n optog, om te wys ons gaan nie sulke euwel dinge in ons gemeenskap duld nie,” het Saalman gesê. “Die skoolhoof Danny Jacobs het ons gehelp om die optog te reël en die hele gemeenskap het saamgestaan. Daar het ek nou gesien dat velkleur niks is nie, hy het regtig omgegee vir sy gemeenskap.” Na Monique se moord in 2002 het Saalman en ‘n groep vroue van Reservoir Hills vrywilliglik slagoffers van verkragtings sowel as ou-

ers wie se kinders verkrag is bygestaan. In 2010 was daar nog ‘n voorval waar ‘n dogtertjie in die gemeenskap verkrag en vermoor is. Dit het Saalman laat besluit om ‘n meer prominente rol in haar gemeenskap te vervul. Sy is in 2007 die geleentheid gebied om saam

met ‘n groep vroue na Swede te reis om daar meer te leer oor projekte wat ten doel het om vroue te bemagtig en sterker rolle in hulle gemeenskappe te vervul. Dit was waardevol in haar proses om Monique Haven as ‘n niewinsgewende organisasie geregistreer te kry.

Ons moenie wag vir die owerheid nie, ons moet self ‘n verskil maak. “Dié besoek het my nog méér gemotiveer om deur Monique Haven ‘n verskil in ons gemeenskap te maak. “Ons het Monique se naam geleer uit hartseer, ‘n tyd van skokkende gebeure. Maar nou gebruik ons haar naam positief, om vir mense hoop te gee wat verkrag of mishandel word,” het Saalman gesê. Monique Haven wil in samewerking met die Despatch Polisie werk. Hulle wil die belangrikheid van ‘n plek van beskerming op die dorp beklemtoon met die hoop dat so ‘n fasiliteit ‘n realiteit kan word. “Verkragtings en mishandeling gebeur nog elke dag hier in ons gemeenskap. Werkloosheid is hoog en hier is baie kinders wat nie skoolgaan nie weens finansiële redes. “Nutteloosheid werk mos maar altyd na ‘n ongehoorde ding toe. “Ons wil ons mense leer dat dit belangrik is dat hulle ‘n saak moet gaan aangee by die polisie en dat hulle vir HIV toetse moet gaan. Baie dink dit is ‘n skande of nie belangrik nie. “Nee, dit moes nie met jou gebeur het nie en die verkragters moet boet vir hulle dade. Tienerswangerskappe is ook baie hoog weens die sosio-ekonomiese toestande van die gemeenskap,” het Saalman gesê. Monique Haven is betrokke by algemene welsynstake in die gemeenskap soos bystand met welsyn toelaes, tuisversorging, bystand aan TB-lyers en Saalman is ‘n opgeleide berader sowel as ‘n komiteelid van die Gustav Lamour Kliniek. Monique Haven ondersteun ook ‘n inisiatief om die musiekorkes vir die jeug op die been te bring. Muir College Boys High School celebrated its 193rd year during the first weekend in March with one of the oldest Muirites alive also in attendance. The Founders’ weekend kicked off with a formal assembly in the school hall where Alan Whitehead from the class of 1965 and Mike Vermaak from the class of 1975 regaled boys with anecdotes of Muir in the past. Bert Cook (93) one of the oldest Muirites alive, was born when Muir College celebrated its 100th year. He matriculated in 1937 and attended the reunion weekend with his son Eric. On the Friday night various local bands performed at the “Party in the Quad.” Learners of Muir, both past and present along with family, friends and staff of Muir rocked the night away to great music. Saturday was a sporting day. The Muir College 1st XI played a T20 game against the OMU Invitation XI (The Streso All Stars). The u.11 Strawberries played the u.11 Apples. The u.15A and u.16A teams played against Despatch.

Just after noon the 1st XV took to the field and they played a successful match against Victoria Park 1st XV. The OMU Founders’ Dinner was held in the school hall and new committee members of the OMU Union were announced namely: Devin Astbury: Secretary; Jason Henman: Vice President and the new President of the OMU: Warren Wahl. The guest speaker, famous South African rugby referee Craig Joubert entertained guests with stories of his various reffing encounters. He also shed some light on the rigours of this high profile position. Darren Mann was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. On Sunday morning the Old Muirites and guests were able to enjoy a round of golf to wrap up a festive weekend. The OMU has planned and presented a magnificent vision for 2020 and all are thanked who have committed to assist and contribute towards the school to ensure that it will continue to be “Second to None”. - Reporter -

APPRENTICESHIPS AVAILABLE ON A TWO (2) YEAR TRAINING CONTRACT AT EASTCAPE MIDLANDS TVET COLLEGE IN UITENHAGE APPRENTICESHIPS: Apprenticeship is a system of “learning by doing.” It combines on the job training with training at Eastcape Midlands College. After completing this apprenticeship successfully, the qualified artisan will have to choose the industry in which they would prefer to work.

Highly skilled welders are increasingly in demand due to modern advancements in production processes and materials. They need to be proficient in a wide variety of welding techniques and capable of continually producing high quality welds in often difficult conditions. Qualified welders can look forward to a variety of interesting opportunities in a wide range of industries.

An electrician installs and maintains the electrical infracture in industrial and domistic premises or facilities. Once an apprentice qualifies as a artisan he can start his/her own business or seek employment in the industry or commence.

chess player from Uitenhage has qualified for the Eastern Province u.20 chess team to participate at the forthcoming South African Junior Closed Chess Championship which will be held in Pretoria.

Justin Rishworth (18) a learner at Cape Recife High School, has represented EP Chess several times and this is his first year qualifying for SAs which will be held from 3-11 April. “It is exciting. I know there are various challenges lying ahead, but there will always be positives and negatives. “To me it is about the positives, like having had the opportunity to play on national level whether I make the SA team or not,” said Justin Rishworth, who started playing chess in Grade 3. He is being coached by Sven Stocklose for the past five years. Stocklose is an internationally accredited coach and arbiter who has been the coach of several teams at provin-

cial and national level. “My dream was to play for EP, but when you achieved your dream it is important to set new goals and try to improve yourself as a player. You have to improve to get where you want and to be successful.” According to his mother, Irma, he is determined and hardworking to achieve his dreams. “If he wants something he works towards it. When he plays at a competition and he loses he is despondent, but he does not give up. And I like that!” said Irma. It all started for Justin when one of his teachers, Mrs Smith, invited learners to a chess practice. She noticed his interest in the game and inspired him to start playing. In 2010 I came second in the Uitenhage Open C Section in which a lot of strong participants competed. “It is important to me that you do not have too many expectations in life. Because if you have high expectations you are destined to be disappointed. “Look at your achievements in baby steps. You can’t run if you can’t crawl yet. I always tell him give it horns, give it your best, but if you lose, make sure you have at least enjoyed it. “It is fine losing. Losing is not an issue. Learn something from it and enjoy it. Because if you did not do that then it is a lost cause,” said Irma. Justin said Cape Recife School has a decent chess team. “I don’t like comparing teams with each other. I am not one who likes to compare. But we have a strong team and we all work hard and strive together to achieve our goals. “The trick to stay motivated. I once told my mom that one day I would love to play in the red and black EP clothes. She told me that one just has to take small steps and do what you can to improve. “Various people like my mom, friends and family all did their part in keeping me motivated. And to stay hungry, passionate and to enjoy the game that I love,” said Justin.

Jonges leer rugby se kernwaardes MARYKE LOW Op sy dag was dit genoeg om te draf vir fiksheid, vertel Danie Gerber. Deesdae bult rugbyspelers van jongs af spiere in gimnasiums. Maar één ding bly dieselfde: “Die wenners van ’n rugbywedstryd is die ouens wat die basiese vaardighede die beste in 80 minute kan toepas.” Daarom is die “Doring van Despatch” betrokke as afrigter by sy alma mater, waar ’n nuwe rugby-akademie pas bekend gestel is. Gerber was verlede week die gasspreker by die Hoërskool Despatch waar die akademie sal wees. Hy sal sy kragte saamsnoer met dié van Wayne van Heerden, Adri Geldenhuys, Fabian Juries, Johnny Vermeulen en Konrad Schultz om die seuns se vaardighede te slyp. Heinrich Deysel, ook ’n oudleerder van Despatch, sal as die akademie se fiksheidsinstrukteur optree. “Die akademie sal fokus op drie pilare: teorie, kondisionering en vaardigheidsontwikkeling,” het Jacques du Plessis, die Despatchonderwyser wat die teorie sal aanbied, gesê. Top of high school athletes in action this weekend After rounds and rounds of elimination, high school athletes that have proven themselves over the last couple of months will get the opportunity to compete against their counterparts from all over the Eastern Cape. The athletics season started with athletics meetings at school level. Thereafter it was zonal athletics meetings followed by district athletics meetings. The athletics season for high schools culminates in the staging of the Eastern Cape Provincial Championships to be held at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University over the weekend of Friday, 13th March and Saturday, 14th March. These two days will see the best of the provinces’ high schools athletics talent competing against one another for a spot in the Eastern Cape team that will participate in the National Championships later in the term. This promises to be two days of action filled show-

casing of the Eastern Cape’s high schools athletics talent. All the mega districts of the Eastern Cape have confirmed their participation in the event and it promises to be athletics of a high standard. High school athletes from all over the province will converge on the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University for two days of fierce competition. The action will start on Friday at 14:00 until 21:00. The action will resume on Saturday from 07:00 until 15:00. Entrance to the event is R20 per person. Any scholar dressed in school uniform is exempted from the entrance fee.
