The public and especially learners are invited to visit this interesting exhibition which will be hosted at the Uitenhage Drostdy Museum for the next six months.

tender. The South African Reserve Bank has launched a communication campaign to introduce South Africans to the new banknote series. The communication campaign for the launch of the new banknote series is themed “One of a Kind”. It emphasises the fact that each banknote will feature an image of former President Nelson Mandela and will therefore be as unique as Nelson Mandela himself. Each note will have stateof-the-art security, technical and design features.

According to a statement by the South African Reserve (SARB) they have according to law, the sole right to issue banknotes. It is international best practice to develop a new banknote series every six to eight years. The SARB, therefore, acts proactively by developing new banknotes to ensure that the country’s money remains among the safest in the world. This is achieved through continually incorporating state-of-the-art security, technical and design features into banknotes in circulation.

Beware of unregistered service providers The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Fire Department is aware of unregistered service providers of fire equipment that currently service fire extinguishers in Nelson Mandela Bay. “The incorrect servicing of fire equipment could prove to be detrimental when a fire broke out resulting in defective extinguishers that could lead to more damage to property,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality media management officer Kupido Baron. “It came to our attention that some companies allegedly still service fire extinguishers with green labels which usage was discontinued from 2003 owing to environmental concerns. “Fire extinguishers still in use have red, blue, black and cream labels at the back,” said Baron. U’hage High alumni to play meaningful role The Uitenhage High Past Pupils and Teachers Association (UHPPTA) was launched recently during a gala evening held at the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre. This memorable event was attended by former pupils, covering almost the entire 48 years of the school’s existence. Programme director, Danny Williams, ensured that there was a pleasant atmosphere throughout the evening. Formalities started with past chairman, Dominic Swartz, giving a thoughtful overview of the history of the organisation. He enjoined the membership of UHPPTA to be constantly mindful of its mission. Present principal, Timothy Heynes, introduced the new executive of UHPPTA, whereafter the guest speaker John O’Connor, head boy in 1981, was introduced. In his brief address O’Connor emphasized the crucial role that alumni organizations had to play in the life of the school. “Concern with the welfare of the school had to find expression at all levels, and there should be concrete endeavours to demonstrate people’s resolve that the school should provide the best possible education to the children in its charge,” said O’Connor. According to chairman of UHPPTA, Mark Williams: “All current matriculants of the school are getting free membership to the

alumni for a year on their ‘number day’ this year.” Five deserving and needy matriculants of 2012 will each be awarded a R9 000 bursary from the alumni (with R10 000 each being donated from Tanswell Louw and Willie Alexander). A R5 000 bursary was anonymously donated on the night to the top Maths and Science matriculant (2012) of the school. Alroy Taai, on behalf of Stenden University (Port Alfred) donated a full bursary to a deserving student to study BCom (Hospitality Studies) at Stenden University commencing 2013. Formal speeches were rounded off by a toast to the alumni, proposed by Paul Geswindt from the NMMU Alumni. He emphasized the absolutely crucial role of alumni associations in calling state institutions to account in respect of their responsibility regarding the education of children. There were lucky draws for prizes, largely sponsored by former pupils, throughout the evening, culminating in the draw for an iPad donated by John O’Connor. The Sunday morning after the event, the alumni donated their left-over unused food to SANTA hospital, Uitenhage. Given the goodwill displayed at the event, there is no doubt that UHPPTA can play a very meaningful role in the life of Uitenhage High School.

Teenagers invited to assist in community project Teenagers interested in assisting as volunteers with a planned Christmas party for approximtely 200 children in the northern areas of Uitenhage are invited to attend a screening session meeting next week. The planned party is organised by Desmeldas, a new community youth group, aiming to motivate underprivileged

Social welfare services’ outreach at Market Square October marks Social Development month which highlights programmes aimed at building a caring society for a better life. My antwoord was dat daar niks fout is met my mond en brein nie!” Daarna het hy vir twee jaar ’n rekeningkundekursus gedoen en later homself aan ’n geregistreerde VSA aanlyn-opleidingsinstituut gekwalifiseer in elektroniese handel. Dit is toe dat deure vir Coetzer begin oopgaan en hy en vriende die Sicherheid Mega besigheid gestig het. Danky sy pelle Divan van Zyl, Pieta Victor, Christo van Eck van die Lions-klub en Danie Coetzee van die PE ovaalbaan wedrenklub, is Coetzer nou die trotse eienaar van ‘n hoë-tegnologie ontwerpdrukker wat letters van tot 1.2 meter kan druk. “Dit is die eerste fase van ‘n vyf-jaar plan met die einddoel om industriële veiligheidstekens te ontwerp en druk asook om veiligheidsoudits te doen. Dit is ook in die pyplyn om veiligheidstoerusting aanlyn te verkoop. My ideaal is om eendag op internasionale vlak in haweveiligheid te spesialiseer.” Coetzer gaan aanstaande jaar kursusse doen in ISO 9001, 14001, 18001 sowel as die toepaslike SABS oudit kursusse. Sy onderneming voldoen ook aan die swart ekonomiese bemagtigings vereistes. “Ek wil my ma en pa trots hou. Die ondersteuning wat ek van hulle en my vriende kry is ongelooflik en dit maak die lewe absoluut die moeite werd.”

Tenant underpaid owing to oversight

This week, the Property Poser experts deal with a situation in which a tenant has been inadvertently underpaying her montly rental for approximately a year. The reader writes that, upon termination of her lease, the agency used by her landlord to collect the rental discovered that they had been invoicing her incorrectly. The tenant had dutifully paid the monthly amount based on the invoice submitted. The outstanding sum has subsequently been deducted from the deposit she paid upon entering into the lease agreement.

Her question is whether this is correct or whether it should have been written off. Although it is not clear whether there was a written agreement in place, it is likely that one did apply owing to an agency being involved, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Nelson Mandela Bay. “In many standard lease agreements, a provision is included that any act or omission on the part of the landlord should not be construed as an amendment to the terms of the contract.” Vermaak says this also relates to the general rule of contract that the terms of an agreement are not amended by the actions of one party only. “Any amendment should be agreed to by the original parties and re-

duced to writing.” The rental agency obviously acts on behalf of the landlord and any of their actions can be imputed to him or her, says Vermaak. “Having said that, should the agent act outside of the scope of that for which they have been appointed, the landlord cannot generally be held liable for those actions.” Another point to note is that the parties initially agreed upon a fair rental for the occupation of the property, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in the metro. “If it turns out that the tenant has been ‘underpaying’, it could be argued that she has been unfairly enriched at the expense of the landlord because she didn’t pay the fair value as agreed upon.” Practically speaking, once determined that the tenant in fact owes the

Baseball

The five day South African Masters Baseball Association inter-provincial tournament kicks off on Tuesday at the Despatch sports complex in Botha Street and promises to be loaded with action. Marius Lourens, chairman of EP Masters said: “The public is invited to pop around and watch some live action and show your support for the EP teams that are contesting in all the divisions.” The programme regarding the EP teams’ games are as follows: •EP B kick-off proceedings against Gauteng on Tuesday at 08:30 on the C-field. •EP Elites take on SWG at 12:30 followed by the game against Western Province on the Afield. This promises to be a cracker! •The EP Veterans take on KZN Veterans on the B-field at 12:30. •EP Juniors, captained by former SA player, Daniel Coetzer will take to the field against Eastern Gauteng at 19:00 under lights. On Wednesday night a “golden oldies” is planned with some former Despatch rugby greats and Dave Callaghan will be the guest of honour. This fun event starts at 20:30. Entrance is free of charge and there will be a variety of food stalls as well as a beer tent.
