Titled “Bad Boys Koos and Frikkie” the melodrama is presented by the local 14 Round Table Uitenhage which for the first time in its history, is joined on stage by members from the Uitenhage Lions Club. Round Table member Deon Nel was responsible for the script and said there was “no better source for writing a story fitting the hilarious melodrama style than the forthcoming elections. Featuring in the story are also a lot of well-known local characters to add some spice to it!” In this melodrama, Bad Boys Koos and Frikkie together with a host of “no name brand actors” will definitely provide substance to South Africa’s 12th language laughing! According to Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage Lions Club, “We all laugh in the same language, so please put away your laptops, iPods, television remotes and LOL to the show that is based on typical local humour.” There will be four shows only, commencing on the evenings of 18 & 19 October and 25 & 26 October at 19:30 for 20:00. With the looming carbon tax soon to be imposed in South Africa and its industry, Venture is one of the firsts to take a step forward utilising wind energy to lower its carbon footprint and become more energy efficient. “The project entails that a wind turbine be connected to the factory for own use. This means that machine is only intended to power the factory and is not to be part of the public electric infrastructure. “This type of power production is also known as embedded generation,” said Claire Olmstead, Legal Representative at Venture Otto South Africa. “This project entails that the wind turbine be connected to our factory directly, as wind energy has a variable energy supply (it is reliant on the wind which is undetermined on any day). A base load of power is usually needed to ensure that there is constant energy supply. “This means that the wind turbine will still draw power from the local municipality grid but when the wind turbine is producing power the factory is programmed to use this power supply as an initial source.” In the event that the factory cannot con-

sume the power generated, a reversible meter is connected to the factory’s switch house, and if any power is fed back into the grid it will reduce its meter count for the monthly power bill. “This great initiative has helped green our company’s profile and ensure that it is less reliant on the municipal grid. “Furthermore it can be seen as a significant development for South African technology and innovation as this project utilises a fully South African manufactured and designed wind turbine, the first of its kind for medium to large scale turbines in the country,” said Olmstead.

eople planning to visit the Volkswagen Group South Africa’s manufacturing factory in Uitenhage nowadays do it in style and comfort. The Volkswagen FactoryTour is mobile, allowing the visitors to rest their feet, sit back and enjoy the ride whilst witnessing the intricate manufacturing process of the Polo and Polo Vivo. The FactoryTour vehicles were custom built by two Volkswagen Motorsport employees using recycled and unused car parts from the factory. The novelty and ingenuity of their approach in manufacturing these vehicles that consist of three cars resulted in a comfortable, practical and stylish vehicle. It took Johnny Allen and Cobus Barnard from Volkswagen Motorsport over three months to complete the three cars. The vehicle was built using spare material

and parts from the Motorsport workshop and factory. “We used left-over paint from the rally cars, spare nuts and bolts as well as trim offcuts to deck out the cars. We built the chassis out of old tyre racks, which we cut in required lengths. The side panels and doors were moulded from scrapped parts from the factory,” said Cobus Barnard. The FactoryTour vehicle can comfortably seat 21 people and will be pulled by an electric tow motor. The FactoryTours take place during weekdays. There are two tours on Monday to Thursday at 09:00 and 12:00. On Friday, there is only one tour at 09:00. )Bookings can be made through the Volkswagen AutoPavilion on 0041 994 5941/3. The FactoryTour includes the tour of the AutoPavilion, where some of the Volkswagen South Africa classic cars are on display.

Die gewildheid van dié klein varkies het wêreldwyd die hoogte ingeskiet nadat Paris Hilton so ’n varkie by haar versameling eksotiese troeteldiere gevoeg het. “Ek hou streng by die voorgeskrewe kos wat ek vir Pumba moet gee. Blykbaar word hierdie varkies baie groot as hulle toegelaat word om te eet wat hulle wil,” het Lizette Stoltz gesê. Huidiglik kan Pumba net weglê in die voorgeskrewe hoeveelheid melk en Morvitepap per dag. “Hy het sy eie bedjie waarin hy slaap en ek moes hom ook leer om ‘n sandbak vol saagsels te gebruik soos ‘n kat. Hy is nogal heel oulik daarmee.” Stoltz het die varkie in Bloemfontein opgespoor en hy is per lugvrag eers na Johannesburg en daarna na Port Elizabeth gevlieg voordat hy nou tuis in sy nuwe huis op Despatch grootword.

thief who early on a Sunday morning broke into a house in Vanes Estate and faced a hidden security camera while helping himself to a lunch box, might now also face the jail bars. “Luckily a motion detector night vision camera was hidden in the house and it recorded video footage of the intruder. We gave it to the police and within days the perpetra-

tor was arrested,” said Terry Ranger, resident of Vanes Estate, Uitenhage. According to Duane Nel an employee at Rangers Spares, the video footage showed how the tall strongly build man “tip-toed through the kitchen, looked up and down the passage, came back, took a snack and then disappeared.” “The seconds he unknowingly faced the camera gave clear enough evidence of his identification,” said Nel.

Apparently the police found the stolen property in his possession and the man was arrested. Three other properties were also broken into during the same weekend, but according to Nel it is not clear if they are connected to the man arrested. “We want to thank the Uitenhage police for their quick and professional response. Also for getting the stolen property back and the thief behind bars. This kind of reaction makes us proud of our men in uniform,” said Ranger.

A stitch in time ... A local upholstery business did not hesitate to assist in repairing a wheelchair so as to get the disabled person back on the move as quick as possible. Elgar Strydom of Despatch was diagnosed with a neurological condition that resulted in his leg being amputated early this year. His only means of getting around is a wheelchair which unfortunately fell into disrepair when the stitching came apart at the seams. To this effect the Uitenhage Lions Club approached Boet Landman Upholsters of Uitenhage to repair the damaged wheelchair. On hearing of the problem Boet and Elmarie Landman did not hesitate to repair the damaged wheelchair at no cost and in their own time. “Without the support of local business, we as Lions would find it almost impossible to assist the community meaningfully. This commitment to assist those in time of need makes all the difference to those ‘We Serve’”, said Lion President Barend Erasmus.

Die sement is daarna op ‘n ander man se bakkie gelaai.” Die karwagte het die registrasienommer van die voertuig geneem en die voorval is by die Despatch polisie aangemeld. Die sement is later teruggevind. Volgens September sal daar nie ‘n

kar gesteel word waar hy en Jordaan diens doen nie. Jordaan het ‘n paar jaar gelede ’n kardief in sy spore gestuit deur hom te konfronteer nadat hy aan ‘n motor se deur gepeuter het. Volgens Henry van Huysteen van Mulder Eiendomme, wat tans besig is met bouwerk aan ’n perseel in Despatch se Hoofstraat, is hulle dankbaar vir die karwagte se flinke optrede.

“Ons het gevoel dit is belangrik om hulle te beloon en aan te spoor om hulle oë oop te hou vir ongeruimdhede waarvan ons nie bewus is nie. Ons kan nie oral wees nie en is dankbaar vir hulle oplettendheid,” het Van Huysteen gesê. Volgens polisiewoordvoerder a.o. Happy faces at Caterpillar Play School. Caterpillar Play School and Day Care at 3 Alberti Crescent in Uitenhage this year celebrates its seventh year in the pre-school educational industry. Lameez Dollie is the owner, manager and also teacher at Caterpillar and has a passion for children and education. She is assisted by Delicia and Cynthia who take care of about 40 children during weekdays. Just like in a caterpillar’s life cycle where it

is all about growth, Lameez has the growth of her Caterpillar children at heart and operates strictly according to an educational plan. As extramural activities they regularly take the chilren on outings and also present Miki Maths. Caterpillar is a registered play school where they take care of children aged from 3 months to 6 years. They also have after care for children up to 9 years of age where they supervise homework and assist wherever needed. The teaching language is English. Although most of the children are Xhosa-speaking, they adapt fairly easy in learning to speak English. “This is my passion and what I love, teaching children,” said Lameez. “I want to thank God for granting me the opportunity to have established Caterpillar. A big thank you also to my husband Nabier, parents, father-in-law and children for your love and support.” Just like a caterpillar may not have the energy to complete its metamorphosis without proper nutrition, Lameez makes sure that each child daily enjoys two healthy meals. Winston, a vocalist and guitarist during his teenage years formed his own band “The Jets” in which he played for five years. “I later was offered the chance to play in a top dance band called ‘Les Continentals’ of which I was part also for five years. I never had a weekend off during that time.” This assisted Winston in starting his own business, a fish and chips shop called “Little Pal Restaurant” in Bains Road, Uitenhage. It was established by Winston and Marlene Wong during September 1977. They both are passionate regarding food. “A lot of people said that I would never make it, but after 36 years we are still in business. As someone said, after 36 years in business you must be doing something right!”

Fresh mein every day Marlene, always friendly and helpful, sees to the customers and takes phone orders, while Winston who adopted a handson approach sees to the kitchen. He makes his own mein (Chinese noodles) every day! According to Marlene, many of their customers grew up with food from the Dragon Inn. “Customers who have relocated to other towns and cities, come back to Dragon Inn whenever they pass through Uitenhage,” said Marlene. They are both devout Christians and thank the Lord every day for His blessings, protection and guidance and that the business is still thriving after all these years. As they are both getting on in years, Winston says that he hopes that someone with the same passion and commitment will one day take over the business and carry on the good name. Winston quoted a saying which reads:

Inyanda Energy Projects (Pty) Ltd (Inyanda Energy), a renewable energy company, plans to develop a wind energy facility between the towns of Patensie and Kirkwood, within the Sundays River Valley Municipality, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.
