six year old girl from Uitenhage, last week for the first time in her life, enjoyed what most people take for granted. With the assistance of a Kaye Walker, she took her first ever steps and out of pure excitement even wanted to run! Iviwe Makile was born two months premature and diagnosed as having cerebral palsy with diplegia. “As a result of her medical condition she has experienced delayed development milestones since birth. “Her highest form of mobility up to the age of five years was to learn to crawl. Owing to her condition she could no longer straighten her knees to stand in an upright position,” said Jana Stander a physiotherapist in Uitenhage. A device was donated by the Uitenhage Lions and Leos Clubs to a local physiotherapist business which assists Iviwe with treatment. Iviwe’s mother Vuyokazi Makile was overwhelmed by emotion seeing her child walking with the device. “I want to thank all involved from the bottom of my heart. May God bless them in return. If it were not for this donation and kindness, I would never have enjoyed this moment to see my child so happy,” said Makile. Dr Raju, the child’s general practitioner, recommended physiotherapy resulting in her being taken to Aurora Special Care

Centre where surgery was performed by Dr D Potgieter, a specialist in paediatric orthopedic surgery. As a consequence of the operation and the follow–up physiotherapy treatment, she has improved to the stage where a Kaye Walker was recommended. According to Lion Denis Murphy, registered physiotherapists S.S. Pieterse & S. Terblanche & J. Stander applied to the Uitenhage Lions Club for a donation to assist them in buying a Kaye Walker for Iviwe. “The motivation of the application is based on the fact that the girl’s coordination of movement is affected which causes paralysis of similar parts on either side of her body,” said Murphy. Both the Uitenhage Lions and Alpha Leo Clubs supported the request and contributed to the donation of the walker which is used at the discretion of the physiotherapists concerned. Stander said, “The walker would assist Iviwe with an improved quality of life, permitting her to attend school and socialize with her peer group in an upright position.” Stander consulted CE Mobility who finalised the child’s measurements for the Kaye Walker. When presented with the walker, the child adapted immediately to the walker. Lion President Barend Erasmus stated with time and practice Iviwe and or any other patient will hopefully overcome similar disabilities and be independent to live their lives to the fullest with the assistance of the walker.

Children’s choir looking for new voices The only junior regional choir in the country, the Eastern Cape Junior Children’s Choir (ECjCC) under leadership of Hanlie Young, will be holding auditions on Friday 1 November at Charlo Primary School. This is an opportunity for talented singers who will be in Grade 1, 2, 3 or 4 in 2014, to join the choir. The ECJCC rehearses once a week, on Wednesdays, from 16:00 – 17:30, at Cillié High School. U’hage summer season carnival

he Uitenhage Street Carnival, which has been on the town’s entertainment calendar for the past 26 years, will be held on Friday 29th November, Saturday 30th November and end off on a high note on 1st December with a gospel show. “The carnival is one of Rotary’s major fundraisers in supporting our local community and is proudly presented by the Rotary Club of Uitenhage, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, and Coca Cola as one of the main sponsors once again this year. The event offers entertainment for the entire family,” said Eurika Greeff from the Rotary Club of Uitenhage. On the carnival programme

will be live music, talent shows, arts and crafts, variety of foods, street entertainers, Little Miss/ Mr Carnival, Miss/Mr Carnival as well as amusement rides and activities and the opportunity to promote businesses. “On the Saturday the festival will start with a dress-up parade followed by entertainment from local as well as national performers and the highlight will be the switching on of the festive lights at 20:00,” said Greeff. Engen Penford Centre and their suppliers will be sponsoring donor refreshments with loads of lucky draw prizes and give-aways up for grabs. Blood donors can donate blood as often as every 56 days, must be between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh 50kg or more, lead a safe and healthy lifestyle and have had a good meal at least 4 hours prior to donating.

Bikers ready to raffle for Toy Run HEILIE COMBRINCK

he motorcycle fraternity from all over the province will flock to Port Elizabeth at the end of the month to participate in the annual popular Toy Run, a fund-raising event in aid of children in need in the Nelson Mandela Metropole. Fund-raising efforts in support of the event have already kicked-off by means of raffle sales. For the past two years the Wild Horse Motorcycle Club from Uitenhage has collected the most funds from all the participating clubs. To add to this achievement, last year’s first prize winner of a brand new motorcycle as well as the third prize winner also hailed from Uitenhage. “This year will be the Toy Run’s 22nd year, thus it was decided to try to collect R220 000 which will be distributed to identified charities in the Nelson Mandela Metropole,” said André Potgieter, Wild Horse MCC president.

Die volgende dag het die motorklub die pad laat vat tot op George waar hulle die bekende Classic Car Company besoek het waar ou motors gerestoureer word. Daarna is hulle na die legendariese Richie Jute wat internasionaal bekendheid verwerf het vir sy nok-aste. “Die nok-aste wat hy gemaak het het bygedra dat ‘n hele paar renjaers nommer een op hulle motors kon dra as kampioenskapwenners. Sy passie vir motors op sy ouderdom het ons manne geinspireer vir ons eie projekte,” het Fouche gesê. Dag drie is die motorklub na Premier Tow-

ing & Panelbeaters op Mosselbaai waar ‘n mini-motorskou gehou is. Daarna pak die bestuurders die asemrowende Robinson-pas voordat daar by Kleinplasie op Oudtshoorn uitgespan word. U’hage proud of its heavyweight champion NCEBA DLADLA & HEILIE COMBRINCK Unathi Jacobs from Uitenhage became the new Eastern Cape Heavyweight Champion when he recently knocked out cold the defending champion Ivan Strydom at the Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton. Jacobs who weighed-in at 94.4 kg won the fast-paced all-action fury against the taller Strydom (105.10 kg) who could not use his reach advantage to keep his opponent at bay. Big Jacobs’ punches to the head dropped Strydom for referee Lizo Jordaan to give him a mandatory count but it was another onslaught of punches that dropped Strydom flat on his face. The fight was over in 2min 47 seconds of the first round.

In the main supporting bout, Mzwabantu Dabaza beat Asandiso Mancapa while Simo Mbande beat Luvuyo Mzamo in the main preliminary bout. Other fights include Siyabonga Blaauw who stopped Thandolwethu Wati, Mzuvukile Daniels beat Cecil Screetch, Bulelani Phillips beat Thando Mahlahla, Zimkitha Lane beat Xolisa Kana, Sindile Manengele beat Bulelani Kwanini, Siphosethu Ncisana beat Yanga Ndoyana and Mzwamadoda Jibiliza beat Ayanda Fatyi. Four of the boxers who competed are from Team Philbro with Louis Phillip as head coach and train at The Mini Gym in John Street, Uitenhage. Mzwabantu Dabaza, Bulelani Phillip and Mzwamadoda Jibiliza all won their fights whilst Xolisa Kana lost on points. “Uitenhage has lots

of boxing talent and it is an honour for us that four of the competing boxers enjoy training at our gym,” said Yolanda Salim, coowner of the gym. According to Dennis Koen, Team Philbro manager and also co-owner of the gym, “East London has always been known for its boxers, but Uitenhage has even better boxers; we just need more training facilities and more hometown fights.” “Although Unathi is with Zama Boxing Club and trains in KwaNobuhle, we have opened our doors to him to exercise here also as we are very proud of him and our local boxers,” said Koen. Both Koen and Salim are keen boxing supporters and have the development of local talent at heart. They are looking forward to the next boxing tournament which will be held on November 9th at the Jeff Masemola Hall in KwaNobuhle.

hristo Meiring van Despatch is huidiglik die topgekeurde Suid-Afrikaanse sowel as Afrika veerpyltjiespeler en vyfde gekeur op die wêreldbekerranglys. Hy het onlangs teruggekeer vanaf die wêreldbeker-veerpyltjiekampioenskappe in St Johns, Kanada, en geskiedenis gemaak nadat hy die eerste SuidAfrikaanse speler is wat onder die top vyf geëindig het. Dit was ook die eerste keer in die SA veerpyltjiegeskiedenis dat ‘n seniorspeler ‘n medalje by dié wêreldbeker wen. Hierdie prestasies het aanleiding gegee dat Meiring deur die SA Veerpyltjie-vereniging aangewys is as die SA Speler van die Dekade. Dit was Meiring se vierde wêreldbeker waaraan hy deelgeneem het en die eerste keer dat hy ‘n medalje gewen het. In die dubbelspel het hy en spanmaat Tinus Grobler van die WP in die finaal teen Engeland verloor. Hy het die afgelope 34 jaar die OP verteenwoordig en is die laaste 15 jaar die spankaptein. Die afgelope 18 jaar was hy lid van die SA span. Meiring is ook gekies vir die 2014 Afrika Sone 6-span wat aanstaande jaar gedurende September in Harare, Zimbabwe, gaan kragte meet. Meiring is ‘n lid van die St Croix Veerpyltjieklub waar hy vir meer as 20 jaar die spankaptein is. Hy speel ook vir die Savannah Lounge veerpyltjieklub op Despatch.
