Be ‘wild at heart’ at Wildsfees REPORTER

mong the big attractions to this year’s Wild@heart Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees are the biggest stage in the Eastern Cape featuring top national artists and the country’s first festival within a festival for the children of festival-goers. “We are recognised as one of the most childfriendly festivals in the country, and this year we have declared that ‘kids are king in Kirkwood’ while they are with us,” says festival director Jenni Honsbein. Housed in the Squillos Kids Square will be a Magic Faerie Trail – another Wildsfees first; a Kids Castle, kid-friendly rides and puppet shows and workshops. Entry for the first two hours is free. Included in the attractions and entertainment on the festival grounds is the Eastern Cape’s only annual mohair expo, the Walk on the Wildside experience, the province’s biggest new vehicle show, and more. For the first time the festival will be hosting a series of talks on burning and contentious issues such as fracking and its consequences, sustainable fishing techniques, anti-poaching and the effects on adults and children owing to of a lack of sleep. Theatre productions include Een klavier, een hart with Rocco de Villiers and Die hart is maar net ‘n pomp (the story of South Africa’s pioneering heart transplant) with Johan Engelbrecht. A special treat for ladies will be a High tea with Emsie Schoeman, the doyenne of etiquette in SA supported by the two well-known kokkedore, Tiaan and Mynhardt. Artists appearing on the giant Windhoek stage include Wicus van der Merwe, Radio Kalahari Orkes, Lianie May, Mi Casa, Snotkop, Kurt Darren, Desmond Wells, Ray Dylan, Nicholis Louw, Izak Davel, Die Campbells, Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels and many more. Also new to the festival is the Tiki Island style beach bar, which promises to be the “chill place of the year,” predicts Honsbein. Heating up the action and getting hearts fluttering will be two of TV’s hottest young stars, who will sporting “sixpacks” for photo shots with fans. Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees visitors will be able to meet Isidingo’s hunky Maurice Paige on Saturday and Izak Davel on Sunday. Both will be showing their Island Style from 10 in the morning. R120 miljoen vir waterprobleme - ’n druppel in emmer LOURENS SCHOEMAN Daar is lig in die tonnel dat uitbreidings aan die Nooitgedacht-waterskema, wat meer water van die Gariepdam na die Nelson Mandelabaai-metropool sal bring, ’n werklikheid gaan word.

Nomvula Mokonyane, minister van water en sanitasie, het Maandag aangekondig die regering gaan onmiddellik R120 miljoen beskikbaar stel om die bedrag wat nodig is vir die werk, aan te vul. Dié R120 miljoen blyk egter die spreekwoordelike druppel aan die emmer te wees, want

Die Burger het in 2011 al berig dat die metromunisipaliteit R1,6 miljard van die nasionale regering versoek het vir ’n ontsoutingsaanleg (R750 miljoen), die bespoediging van die Nooitgedacht-pypleiding (R650 miljoen), die sink van boorgate (R100 miljoen), die herstel van lekplekke by skole (R50 miljoen) en die nagaan van lekplekke elders (R20 miljoen). Gister het Mokonyane gesê daar is ook planne om die emmertoiletstelsel, wat nog in dele van die metro voorkom, in die 2015-’16-boekjaar te vervang. “Die metro het die grootste aantal emmers wat nog vervang moet word,” het sy bevestig. Die R120 miljoen vir die uitbreidings aan die Nooitgedacht-waterskema is om die metro se waterprobleme op te los. “Ons is hier in Nelson Mandelabaai om onder meer ons programme vir die 2015-’16boekjaar te loods, asook ander skemas wat

moet bydra tot die beskikbaarheid van water in die metro,” het Mokonyane gesê. Die vervanging van die emmerstelsel sal volgens haar met die ondersteuning van minister Pravin Gordan en met die samewerking van die metro-munisipaliteit aangepak word “sodat volhoubare oplossings vir hierdie kritieke water- en sanitasieprobleme gevind kan word”. “Ons ondersoek ook die skaarsheid en besparing van water in die metro, veral omdat verliese tans op 33% te staan kom.” Sy het bygevoeg daar moet ook gekyk word na die hoë onttrekkingsyfer van water uit die metro se opgaardamme. Sy glo dat haar departement die metro kan bystaan om dié onttrekkings te verminder. “Ons moet die verskillende gemeenskappe aanmoedig om water op ’n meer verantwoordelike manier te gebruik. Voldoende watervoorsiening in Nelson Mandelabaai is en bly ’n uitdaging,” het sy benadruk.

SPCA needs 2L ice cream containers The Uitenhage SPCA is appealing to the public to donate 2 litre ice cream containers which will be used to make “dog tuck boxes” to hand out to dog owners when the association goes on outreaches into the community. “This is also a perfect opportunity to recycle the ice cream containers into becoming a dog food bowl or water bowl,” said Christelle Erasmus from the Uitenhage SPCA managing board. Schools in the area are challenged to see which school can collect the most ice cream containers. The Eastern Cape’s premier game auction, which takes place on the Friday 26, is another festival highlight. Once again it will be the only game auction in the country where buyers can bid for diseasefree buffalo from the Addo Elephant National Park. Park Manager, Mzwandile Mjadu, says although he has attended the festival regularly in the past, he is excited to be doing so in his new role for the first time this year. “The Addo Elephant National Park will once again offer prime, disease-free buffalo at the auction. Fun run through VW factory An interesting 5km fun run taking participants through the main Volkswagen factory will be held on Saturday, June 6th. The action starts at the VWSA PeoplePavilion at 08:00 and will continue to the factory and eventually end at the PeoplePavilion. It is open to VWSA employees as well as the general public. These butchers deliver a level of customer service that others can only aspire to.” Leon Slabbert, owner of Cuyler Butchery, is known for providing excellent service to his customers, but he is now taking it further, with the total revamp of the butchery. “It will be a state-of-the-art butchery equipped with high-tech technology, a takeaway section, cafeteria, rest rooms and parking for up to 60 vehicles,” said Slabbert. The approximately R10 million revamping project will see the property expanded to a double storey building covering 1400m² which will include a biltong plant meeting very high standards. According to Slabbert the infrastructure will meet and even exceed all standards required to operate as a factory. This includes new drainage and ventilator systems as well as fire safety and security systems. An initiative of the South African Red Meat Industry Forum, these Awards acknowledge butcheries which meet consumer expectations on in-store hygiene, the supply of quality-assured roller-marked South African Beef, their level of competency in offering the best advice on meal preparations and perceived value for money. Butchers were judged according to three categories namely butcheries with four or more till points, butcheries with three or fewer till points and, food market/supermarket butcheries. Nominations will soon open for customers of Cuyler Butchery to vote and nominate them as the best butchery in the country.

Rensche Bogus, medevervaardiger van Tienerzone het gesê Ru-ane het positiewe kommentaar by bekende beoordelaars geniet soos onder andere Louis Loock van die groep Romanz, wat nou sy solo sangloopbaan voortsit. Ru-ane gaan onderskeidelik op 3 en 4 Julie haar debuut CD en musiekvideo laat opneem in Pretoria. Dit is deel van haar wenpryse wat sy ontvang het. Ru-ane is ’n graad 3 leerder aan Laerskool Frans Conradie en neem sedert sy ses-jaar oud was sangklasse by Iloreez Meyer Sangakademie op Despatch. Sy het in 2012 die BayFM sangkompetisie in haar ouderdomsgroep gewen en neem elke tweede jaar aan die Despatch Kunsfees deel

waar sy nog elke jaar goue-toekennings ontvang het. Ru-ane het onlangs opgetree as gaskunstenaar by die NG Eendrag-gemeente op Despatch. Buiten haar liefde vir musiek en sing geniet sy ook perdry en is ook betrokke by liefdadigheidswerk vir die Uitenhage dierebeskermings-vereniging.

Skateboarders from the region as well as afar as Cape Town will flock to the Uitenhage Skate Park, next to Willow Dam, on June 6th to participate in the King of the Cones competition. More than R7 000 of cash prizes are up for grabs for winners in the categories Advanced, Beginners and King of the Cone. The competition is hosted by Uitenhage Skate Scene and the entry fee of R20 will go towards the local nonprofit organisation, Families Against Drugs. Move Up! vat die pad Baviaanskloof toe HEILIE COMBRINCK “En hoe gedra hierdie outjie hom op die grondpad?” Só vra ’n Baviaanskloof-boer terwyl hy hande-in-die-sakke om die stofbedekte astrante VW Up! loop. Dan stop hy en skop-skop-groet een van die wiele. Verbasend goed, is die antwoord op sy vraag. Ja, hierdie klein motor uit Volkswagen se stal

buitelug te geniet nie. Die sementpad tussen Steytlerville en Willowmore is enig van in sy soort in die land. Selfs geharde viertrekvoertuie se dik breëbekbande kan gesny raak wanneer ‘n motor van voor kom en elke motor een stel wiele op die grondsoom en een stel wiele op die sementpad moet ry om verby mekaar te kan kom. Die Move up! is dit nie gespaar nie! Gelukkig is die noodwiel standaardgrootte en was die omruilproses sonder enige dramas. As vrou langs die

pad, met ‘n pap wiel, het dit wel gehelp om die handleiding uit te haal. Binne enkele minute het ’n behulpsame man en sy gesin gestop en kort op sy hakke het ’n boer van ‘n nabygeleë plaas met sy plaasbakkie gestop om hulp aan te bied. Vroegaand draai die Move Up! se neus in na die R332 grondpad na die Baviaanskloof-Meganatuurreservaat. Sy halogeenligte val wyd en wil-wil-spring koedoes langs die pad word gou raakgesien. Die pad is sleg, dele is weggespoel na Maart se groot reëns. Die sinkplaatgeskud is ongemaklik, maar die Move Up! se 144mm grondvryhoogte traksievermoë hou die motor gemaklik op die pad. Hoewel die VW Up! bemark word as die ideale stads- of inkopiemotor, het hy homself op hierdie toetsrit bewys as ’n veelsydige kleinmotor wat ewe goed hanteer op die langpad, sement-

pad sowel as grondpad. Die VW Up! val in die hoër prysklas van die kleinmotormark met waarskynlik sy grootste mededinger Opel se Adam en dan is daar ook die Chevrolet Spark 1.2 LS en Kia Picanto 1.2 EX. Sou die Europese vierdeur VW Up! sy wiele op die Suid-Afrikaanse bodem laat rol, mag dit ’n duik in die VW Vivo se mark maak. Brandstofverbruik is goed met ‘n gemiddeld van 5.64 liter per 100km uit die 35 liter brandstoftenk. In die Baviaanskloof het die boer wat die wiele so skop-skop gegroet het nog ’n draai om die Move up! geloop en met sy hande steeds in die sakke vir sy vrou gesê: “Liefie, dis mos nou ’n ougat karretjie hierdie.” Pryse: VW Take Up!
