elson Mandela Bay Metro Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan has called on residents as well as businesses to be more environmentally aware and conscientious about their waste. Jordaan said he had noticed that many of the public areas are plagued with litter and pollution, owing to illegal dumping. “I have met our waste management officials, and can assure our residents that we are doing everything we can to negate the results of illegal dumping. “However, we will never win the war if people simply continue to dump their litter in the streets, despite our waste management officials doing everything they can to clean them,” Jordaan said. Jordaan said he therefore called on all businesses, hawkers, commuters, taxi rank operators and the general public to take more pride in the Metro. “The communities that we live and work in, such as Korsten, belong to the people. It is your communal property to nurture, develop

and keep clean. As the municipality, we will assist you in doing so, but all that we ask is that you deposit your litter in the public waste management bins and facilities that are provided by your municipality. We ask our businesses to make the necessary arrangements, either with private companies or with the Municipality, to have their refuse from their premises collected on a daily basis.” Jordaan said the municipal waste management officials cleaned all public areas between 10pm and 2am every day from Monday to Friday. “If one visits Korsten for example at 2.30am, one will see that the streets are spotless. From 6am until 2.30pm, street sweepers are employed to sweep the streets and empty litter bins. However, the extent of those who disrespect the environment by littering and dumping overwhelms the municipal efforts in cleaning our streets,” Jordaan ended. According to Metro Communications Director Roland Williams, they had prepared and approved a comprehensive strategy to eliminate illegal dumping. “Once the strategy has been fully implemented, visible changes will be noticed,” said Williams.

Dit is nog nie duidelik hoe dit gebeur het nie, maar op een of ander manier het die padskraper se lem tussen die trekker en die sleepwa gekom. Met die losrukslag van die sleepwa is die mense afgeslinger,” het Seekoei gesê. ’n Saak van strafbare manslag word ondersoek, het Seekoei bevestig. “Die ondersoek sal ook bepaal of dit wettig en veilig was vir die werkers om op die sleepwa vervoer te word.” Die boer wie se werkers in die ongeluk betrokke was, kon nie gister vir kommentaar bereik word nie. “Die familie van die oorledenes en die mense wat beseer is, is in ons gedagtes en gebede,” het Karen Smith, DA-raadslid,vir die gebied gesê. “Die hele gemeenskap is geskok. REPORTER He’s swopping his briefcase for a backpack and meetings for the mountain. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Derrick Swartz will be moving out of the familiar comfort of academia to “walk the talk” - literally. As part of Prof Swartz’s personal commitment to the University’s 10-year celebrations, he will be climbing Mount Fuji in Japan on 7 August to raise funds for academically-deserving but financially-needy students at NMMU. The #climb4nmmu campaign will also give Prof Swartz the opportunity to highlight the extent of the need for financial support for such students especially within the Eastern Cape, which is recognised as the poorest province. The R9.5 billion distributed as part of the government’s National Student Financial Assistance Scheme (NSFAS) does not meet national needs, and certainly not within NMMU. “My view is that we - society at large - must find ways of augmenting the pressurized resources. All of us have the capacity to

make a difference,” says Prof Swartz. Prof Swartz’s 3,7km climb will be symbolic of the challenges many students face in order to get a tertiary qualification such as perseverance, taking responsibility and integrity. There are 10 base camps leading up to the peak, one for each year of NMMU’s first decade. All funds will go to the University’s Bursary Legacy Campaign run by the NMMU Trust. Their Ignite a Candle campaign is already supporting worthy students. The University is hoping to raise at least R500 000 to support a further students for the duration of their degrees or diplomas. To support the Vice-Chancellor in his initiative, a number of events to raise both awareness and funds will be hosted before his departure from Port Elizabeth on 31 July. These include a rowing challenge and a time trial for running up the university’s main building of 18 storeys. Prof Swartz runs up to his office on the top floor daily and down again as part of his training for the challenging two-day climb. The former will be with students and the latter against corporate sponsors.

This is what an emotional Michelle Inggs, mother of the murdered teacher Jayde Panayiotou, said when a group of friends officially joined the #Justice4Jayde campaign. “We stand up for Jayde as well as every other woman who are being suppressed,” Michelle said. The message will be conveyed on August 8 – a day before Women’s Day – in Port Elizabeth’s streets when Michelle and Toni Inggs, sister of Jayde, together with others and all dressed in #Justice4Jayde T-shirts, participate in the annual Chocolate Run at Kings Beach. The announcement came in the same week that Chanelle Coutts, mistress of Christopher Panayiotou, exclusively spoke to YOU magazi-

ne and then in a local English daily newspaper denied that she was paid for the interview. Christopher was charged with conspiracy to murder on his wife Jayde. Coutts told YOU she believed in his innocence. Michelle and Toni recently also experienced the support from the public in a fun run which they participated in #Justice4Jayde T-shirts. “That fun run was a wonderful experience. So many people support us, and I appreciate every single hug that people have given me,” Michelle said. In the three months since the murder of Jayde, the Inggs family heard in court how Christopher apparently had planned her murder for more than six months.

According to the state he paid thousands of rands for the murder. “The fun run is yet another attempt to put pressure on the courts so that justice will be done for Jayde,” Esmerie van Aarde, a friend of Toni, said. Van Aarde is also the one that contacted Jason Gabriel, organiser of the Chocolate Run. Gabriel said he immediately thought it was a wonderful idea when Van Aarde contacted him about #Justice4Jayde. “Their campaign reflects the principles of the fun run.” Entry for the fun run R120 per person. This time around Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz were not competing in the automotive sense but on the soccer pitch as the two teams met for a soccer derby. Excited spectators were treated to three games between the two carmakers. The first game was between the Volkswagen masters and Mercedes Benz masters. The home side won the match 5-1 to register its first win of the day. The second match, between the Volkswag-

en and Mercedes B-Teams, was a thrilling affair with Volkswagen seeking to extend its lead and Mercedes looking for their first win of the day. Volkswagen scored two early goals which helped the team settle well. Mercedes got their rhythm late in the first half and scored a beautiful goal in the 38th minute. The game became more interesting as the East Londoners started asking more questions of VW. The second half started with the home team scoring its third goal in the 47th minute but the visitors responded immediately. Volkswagen however sealed the game in the 82nd minute with a fourth goal and two minutes

later scored another one to end the match at 5-2. The third match of the day was a tense and close affair. Mercedes settled in much quicker and were enjoying most of the ball possession. The blue and whites were constantly under pressure but the strong defence and excellent goal keeping kept the home team in the game. In the 42nd minute a brilliant attack from the right wing resulted in a cross that put the Mercedes Benz under pressure and as a result they ended up heading the ball into their own net and that was the goal that sealed the game in favour of Volkswagen.

The concept is ideal for those who do not have the time to spend in front of a stove and also for pensioners preferring to enjoy a daily balanced meal. “It is real Boerekos. We cook it like we know it is done in a farmhouse kitchen, with atten-

tion to healthy ingredients, a loving heart and generous portions,” said Yvonne. Plaaskombuis started a year ago, with their first order being three meals a day. The business gradually expanded and the assistance of Gloria Claassen was soon needed with the average of 40 plates nowadays being served per day. The meals are ordered from a weekly menu which is altered from time to time. Home-cooked meals, to name a few, include: • Beef curry, steamed rice, green beans & sweet carrots • Fried chicken, rice & gravy, peas, carrots • Lasagne, carrots & salad • Lamb curry, rice, pumpkin & beans

Big bucks to athlete who breaks record A sponsorship of R100 000 awaits the athlete who breaks the open record in the forthcoming Jumbo SA Half Marathon Championship which will be held at the end of July. Eastern Province Athletics earlier this year secured a sponsorship totalling R1.3 million from Jumbo Clothing and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. In an unprecedented move Jumbo announced the additional sponsorship for any athlete, male and female, who breaks the open record. The prize for the first male and the first female crossing the finishing line is R35 000 each. Then down to fifth place are R20 000, R12 500, R10 000 and R8 000 respectively. The Jumbo SA Half Marathon Championship will be held on Saturday, July 25th with the 21.1km and 5km both starting and finish-

ing at Pollok Beach, Summerstrand. There are also a first and a second prize for the school with the most entries (minimum of 50 entries) namely R3 000 and R2 000. 12 Stages of exciting rally action

REPORTER RALLY fans can look forward to an exciting Volkswagen Rally on Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18, in Port Elizabeth and surrounds. The 2015 event features 12 stages of competition, with the layout of the event designed to keep the action as close to the fans as possible. For motorsport fans wanting to get involved as early as possible, the scrutineering function on Thursday evening before the rally presents the perfect opportunity. The venue is Tavcor Volkswagen on the William Moffett Expressway. Scrutineering has been revamped for 2015 and will allow fans to see the cars, meet the drivers and navigators, get posters signed and also enter a competition. A wheel-changing competition is being organised for rally fans attenting the scrutineering event – the winners of which will be treated to a VIP VW Rally experience at the Volkswagen Rally. “The VW Rally is going to be more challenging and also much more spectator friendly,” says Joe Fourie, route organiser of the event.

“There is less driving around for the rally fans and there is also spectating at every single stage of the event. A great deal of work has gone into making this rally the most accessible event yet.” Auto Pavilion at Volkswagen in Uitenhage is the start of the Volkswagen Rally at midday as usual – with free entry for rally fans who can spend time exploring the interactive layout and also getting to know the teams. From there the action moves to stage one - the Motherwell stage at 12:24 with stage two at Jachtvlakte starting at 13:15. Stage three sees the teams head to Mission Road at 14:03 and rally fans can spectate this stage at Port Elizabeth Oval Track Raceway (PEOTR). Stage four sees a return to Jachtvlakte starting at 15:34. Stage five is another repeat, this time the Motherwell stage which starts at 16:30. The final stage for Friday is at Aldo Scribante Raceway where Volkswagen Rally competitors will face a challenging tar and gravel stage starting around sunset (17:30). “As sponsors we have worked closely with the Volkswagen Rally organisers to ensure this event is easily accessible to the general

Stage nine sends the competitors to Mission Road – initially used as stage three on Friday – to rally from 09:34 before they return to the forest for stage 10, the PPC Ultimate stage. Stages 11 and 12 are super special stages which means spectators can look forward to watching two cars in action on the stage simultaneously – and both of these stages take place at PEOTR, rounding off the Volkswagen Rally with maximum action. “Greater accessibility to the event means more opportunities to see the rally cars in action,” says Fourie. “This will provide good spectating but rally fans should still plan their spectating and choose which stages they would like to see.”
