Police officials arrest 142 suspects over weekend Police officials in the Uitenhage Cluster have arrested more than 142 suspects, through high density operations that were conducted over the past weekend. According to police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, a total of 41 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R20 500. “Two suspects (male and female, both in their forties) were arrested in Baleka Crescent, KwaNobuhle after information was received and members confiscated bags containing 250kg dagga with a street value of
more than R500 000,” said Captain Swart. “The other suspects were arrested in charges relating to robbery, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft, possession of suspected stolen goods. Ten (10) arrests were made for driving under the influence of
liquor and 21 persons were arrested and detained after illegal drugs were found in their possession. A total of 37 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes.” The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in re-

Ja, ek het mos op ’n plaas grootgeword daar in Hankey se wêreld. Ek is so bly oor my ma en pa, hulle is al jare weg, maar wat hulle my geleer het is nog by my. En dit is om te werk en dat jou ja, ja bly en nee is nee,” sê Selina. “Werk is goed, kyk my jaart. Dit is skoon en my stoep blink. Maar mense van vandag wil mos nie meer hierdie werk doen nie. Hulle gaan sit so in die sonnetjie, dan kom hy hierdie kant ... dan skuif hulle so agter die sonnetjie aan. As jy so maak dan sit jou verstand onder jou voete.” Tuinmaak is jou groot liefde, hoekom is dit vir jou so lekker?: “O, dit is nou die plek waar ek op my lekkerste sing. Jy kan mos sien hoe mooi is my tuin. “Hier prys ek die Here. En ek sê dankie vir die voëls op my dak, want as hulle so fluit, dan sê hulle ook môre, want die Here het ons almal geskape. Wie is ons om so verby ’n ander te gaan sonder groet? Nee, jy moet dankbaar wees jy leef en dit wys.
“Maar as jou lewe vol van die Heilige Gees is staan jy fluks op. Jy maak die vensters oop en hou jou brass goed blink.” SELINA TITUS

Maar dit gaan mos oor aardse wette en die mense wat die land moet laat aangaan kyk net na hulle eie sakke. “Hulle is niks gepla oor arm mense nie. Kyk daardie R1 400 is nie geld vir oumense nie. ’n Ouma wat nog kleinkinders in die huis het om na te kyk, kan nie met daardie geld vir hulle ’n mooi toekoms plan nie. Ek sou die ou mense darem net R2 400 per maand gee. Daar is baie versoekinge in die lewe, wat is die beste raad om dit te weerstaan?: “Kyk een of ander tyd moet elkeen van ons die aarde verlaat. Tanks installed at schools thanks to learners W
ith South Africans experiencing the worst drought in 23 years, there was a heightened awareness of the country’s water scarcity during the 2016 Woolworths Educational Programme’s ‘Thirsty for Action’ competition. A record number of more than 5 000 entries were received. Learners from Grades 1 to 12 in participating schools were asked to write a letter that demonstrated their understanding of water scarcity as well as motivate why their school needed to win a fully installed, 10 000 litre water tank. A total of 14 water tanks were donated to schools across the country, with 2 of these tanks installed at schools in Uitenhage. Lisenathi Daku of Little Flower Primary School in Uitenhage was one of this year’s ‘Thirsty for Action’ winners. She impressed the judges with her wonderfully illustrated letter that showed she has a keen awareness
of the importance of water saving. Liyema September of Ashton Gontshi Primary in KwaNobuhle, was another winner from Eastern Cape. She impressed the judges with her awareness of the importance of water to all life and made it clear that a water tank would help their school be more water secure, which would include being able to irrigate their food garden. “Some of the learners who entered attend schools that have no running water and others in the drought-stricken regions are experiencing water cuts that disrupt their education,” said Pieter Twine, Woolworth’s General Manager of Loyalty and MySchool. “It is vital that our youth are empowered to live more sustainable lives and play a role in safeguarding their future.” The two learners each won a Woolworths gift card for themselves and a water tank for their school. ‘Fête de la Musique’ to mingle the French way V
ibrant street muscicans, fine food and pure French flamboyance are what can be expected at the “Fête de la Musique” music festival in Richmond Hill on Saturday. “The “Fête de la Musique” allows musicians and members of the public to interact on a social level. “It is also an opportunity to discover new artists and is an interesting vehicle for musicians to entertain them,” said Charlotte Jarnet, director of Fête de la Musique. There will more than 30 local artists and 2 international artists (from France & from Reunion Island) performing at the festival
which will be take place on two stages (10:0022:00). The festival was initially launched in France on the 21st June 1982 and has become an annual social tradition in cities throughout France. Based in Port Elizabeth since 1960 and in Richmond Hill since 1990, the Alliance Française, International Language School & Cultural Centre, has launched this festival to combine a contemporary French tradition with South African musical culture. “The Alliance Française believes that Richmond Hill is the ideal venue to host the Fête
de la Musique as it is a vibrant suburb with a large variety of restaurants and boutiques situated in the area,” said Jarnet. Festival-goers will have the opportunity to walk from one venue to another and in so doing discover a variety of bands. Raleigh Street will be the focus of the festival, with the main stage in Raleigh/Bain & Alliance Française stage in Raleigh/

Die personeel help ook met remediërende onderrig. Die speelsentrum is vir 3-6 jarige kinders
terwyl die leersentrum toegerus is vir kinders van 7 jaar en ouer. Die kleuterafdeling is vir 3-4 jariges, graad RR vir 4-5 jaar en graad R vir 5-6 jaar oue kinders. Eileen werk baie nou saam met die department van onderwys sowel as Laerskool Handhaaf aan wie Pierie Wierie, as ’n voerskool, nasorg bied. Die graad 1-3 leerders van Handhaaf het nasorg

Aloes are in full bloom and wherever you go it makes a beautiful sight. In enjoying these flowers and in celebration of environment month, the Zwartkops Conservancy invites the public to join them on a walk in the Aloe Reserve on Sunday. There is a choice of two trails. The full 7km trail is easy as it is almost all one level. The short 2km route is for those who cannot walk far, but would like to see the Bluewater Bay valley thicket at its best. All walkers are requested to meet at 09:30 at the Aloe Reserve at the top of Tipper’s Creek Road in Bluewater Bay. Increasing support for night relay
=The series leaders from Uitenhage, Gamble Pharmacy team, comprises Mariano Esau, Brandon Eppenaar, Aphlyn Taai, Antonio Seconds and Robert Matthys who are set to race Round 2. PHOTO:SUPPLIED Support is growing for the monthly Town Lodge Business Night Relay which takes place on the last Tuesday of the month at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium with Round 2 just under a week away. Series leaders, and champions for the past couple of years, the Gamble Pharmacy team from Uitenhage, will take some beating this year with their strongest opposition currently coming from their mixed team whom they just managed to pip in Round 1 by a couple of seconds. Open to 5 person running teams and 3 person walking teams, the Town Lodge Night Relay offers local businesses and sports teams a great opportunity to stay active during winter and socialise outside of the workplace. This unique series held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium sees each runner or walker having to complete a 3.5km route within the stadium grounds as well as running completely around the stadium on both levels 2 and 5 offering an
awesome view of this iconic venue. The route has just a brief 100m section along Prince Alfred Road which sees participants leaving the secure gates of the stadium and this section is patrolled by Atlas Security for participants’ peace of mind whilst inside the stadium no fewer than 20 marshals and security officers are along the route which this round will also include a halfway water station. In the walking category the social team from Bluewater Bay are currently in a class of their own and it’s going to take a group of serious walkers to challenge them. The next round of the Town Lodge Night Relay takes place on Tuesday, 28th June starting at 18:00 with gates into the stadium opening at 16:00 for the teams. Big bugs to win in U’hage to Bay relay During the early seventies a relay between Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth was staged. It ran for some years, before it was replaced by the Great Train Race. But now the relay is back! The City Relay will be held on Sunday, July 3rd, with the route starting from Muir College. It runs through Despatch and finishes at PE City Hall. The marathon starts at 06:30 and the relay at 07:00. It forms part of the Legacy Project, en-

dorsed and supported by the City of Champions and is entirely funded by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Prizes for both men and women in the marathon run down to 5th place, R10 000, R6 000, R4 000, R3000 and R1 500 respectively. All the other categories run down to 3rd place. Prizes for club relay teams are a whopping R20 000 for male and female teams consisting of 4 members, and R6 000 for mixed teams also consisting of 4 members per team. Social and
Corporate teams have 8 members per team with first prize set at R4 000. Relay legs are divided into a 10km, 11.1km, 10km and 11.1km, with social and corporates categories divided into 8 legs of 3 x 5km, 1 x 6.1km, 3 x 5km and 1 x 6.1km, schools, both primary and high, have prize tags of R4 000 each for first place, R1 600 for second and R1 200 for third. There is a bonus of R10 000 on offer to the winning primary and high schools.
There will be a bus service to transport athletes from the finish in Port Elizabeth, back to the start. Buses will also be available to drop off team members at certain change overs. Coetzee said, “We love rugby and we want South Africa to share this love. The players felt it on the first day at camp when they went into communities and stood by the roadside trying to beg a lift. Roux said that SA Rugby had achieved a
number of significant advances in recent months but that that message was not always heard. “The selection of our Springbok, SA ‘A’ and Junior Bok squads point to the future,” said Roux. “Our Sevens team has an outstanding squad, we have signed new sponsors as well as the Proudly South African Pledge and engaged positively with key stakeholders. “This really is a time to #LoveRugby.” The #LoveRugby movement will gather momentum during the international season with more engagements with supporters and expressions of rugby love to come.
