here will be no melodrama in Uitenhage this year. But, camaraderie there will be in the format of the Uitenhage Lions Club steak evening. “This fund-raiser is vital. We as a Club are to support Lions International Club to achieve the target in serving 100 million people on our centennial service date of end of June 2018,” said André Minnie, the president of the Uitenhage Lions Club. During the term 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015, the local Lions and their family members numbering 464 served a total of 6 074 hours finalising 37 service projects for the commu-

nities of Uitenhage and Despatch. “Therefore the Club views the steak evening as critical in order for us to assist LCI in support of the centennial service challenge. Hopefully we can repeat our achievements of the previous term,” said Minnie. In order for Lions Clubs International to reach the goal of serving 100 million people by the end of June 2018, all 1.5 million members in 208 countries and regions worldwide have accepted the challenge to provide a service to those less fortunate than themselves. “At present over 86 million people have benefitted, but the clock is ticking,” said Minnie. The Uitenhage Lions Club will host its

steak evening at the Despatch Rugby Club. All funds raised will go towards the Centennial Service Challenge. The steak evening will be held on Friday, August 26 at 18:00 for 18:30. The cost is R100 per person which include a T–bone steak with pepper sauce, salad and a roll. Sy het ook gesê die polisie het nóg twee verdagtes in dieselfde motor vir vermoedelik gesteelde goedere aangekeer. ’n Hoekslyper, skroewedraaier en ander “huisbraak-gereedskap” is in die twee verdagtes se besit gekry. Janse van Rensburg kon nog nie bevestig of dié twee verdagtes ook deel van die hoekslyperbende is nie. “Die polisie se ondersoek moet nog gedoen word.” Montgomery het weer reguit gesê hy glo die inhegtenisneming van die vier verdagtes is ’n “deurbraak” ten opsigte van die hoekslyperboewe, en hy hoop die polisie sal die res van die groep met goeie ondersoekwerk kan aankeer.

Township mechanics get lifeline Nelson Mandela Bay’s township economy is set for a major boost with 106 mechanics inducted for the two-year Informal Automotive Service Centres Development Programme. An initiative of the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative (UDDI) in partnership with Filpro, an enterprise development company established to empower informal automotive entrepreneurs in South Africa, the programme is the first of its kind for the Eastern Cape. The programme covers theoretical and practical training to over 1 000 informal service centres. A group of generalist mechanics, tyre repairs and panel beaters from KwaNobuhle, Khayamnandi and KwaLanga are the first beneficiaries of the programme in the region. “Bringing the programme to Nelson Mandela Bay is Filpro’s way of giving back to the region as township automotive businesses in

the area regularly make use of automotive products manufactured by our parent company, G.U.D. Holdings,” adds Mahlalela. An induction workshop, held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology (Uitenhage), marked the official kick-start of the two-year programme. Workshops are set to continue at Khayamnandi Hall (Despatch), Babs Madlakane Hall (KwaNobuhle) and Langa Hall (KwaLanga). Acting UDDI Enterprise Development Manager, Wandisiwe Nondlazi says, “Interactions with township-based enterprises showed that mechanics were capable of repairing cars but did not have formal qualifications or training to professionally conduct such services.” “Hence, we [UDDI] approached Filpro as an implementing partner as its core mandate looks to develop 100% black-owned small businesses in the automotive sector by pro-

viding business development support and procurement opportunities.” Nondlazi explains that the initial attention of the programme will be on basic business management and entrepreneurial skills development which will focus on financial administration, customer care, sales and marketing. The next phase will be hands-on and cover product training on automotive filters, brake pads, lubricants and spark plugs. Entrepreneurs will also learn the importance of using genuine automotive parts, laws of product, the Consumer Protection Act, as well as environmentally-friendly methods for recycling used car parts and oil. UDDI’s strategic partnership with Filpro was driven by the shared vision for empowering township based businesses as a way to accelerate economic activity and employment opportunities in the Nelson Mandela

Bay townships. Owner of Kwano Auto Repairs in KwaNobuhle, Sipho Mkayo (29), is elated to have made it to the initial intake. With no formal training since he started working on cars 14 years ago, he managed to establish his business in 2013 and today employs eight people. Mkayo says, “You can never stop learning! With this opportunity, my employees and I will be professionally trained in dealing with motor vehicles. I am also hoping to learn ways to effectively market my business.” All participants are running operational automotive-related ventures and were selected at UDDI and Filpro roadshows held in Uitenhage and Despatch. Upon completion, these automotive entrepreneurs are expected to offer a professional service that creates sustainable job opportunities and thus contributes to the upliftment of the local community. Efforts to intensify pool of new generation engineers In a move to empower the youth through its education, training and skills development programme, the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative (UDDI) has partnered with Royal HaskoningDHV to offer twenty Grade 12 learners a job shadowing opportunity at the company. Royal HaskoningDHV is an international

consulting engineering and project management group with presence in six of South Africa’s provinces and this includes offices in Port Elizabeth, East London and Queenstown. “We hope to inspire the learners to explore engineering as career path, and help them to understand the importance of maths and science in the engineering world, and how

The learners will visit the Fishwater Flats Wastewater Treatment Works in Swartkops that is currently being undertaken by Royal HaskoningHDV. Job shadowing programme “Since also running a Saturday programme to assist learners with application for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) qualifications; the job shadowing programme is a natural progression in our efforts to intensify support to learners that will one day form the captive pool of a new generation of engineers,” Ndlovu adds. The learners were selected by the UDDI from ten under-resourced high schools in Uitenhage and Despatch, namely: Zanolwazi Secondary High School,Tinara High School, Limekhaya High School, Phaphani High School, Sisonke High School, VM Kwinana High School, Thanduxolo High School, Nkululeko High School, Solomon Mahlangu High School and Molly Blackburn High School. “These schools participate in curriculum support programmes offered by the UDDI-

managed Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre,” explains the head of the science centre’s outreach education programmes, Singa Poswa. “We selected top maths and science performers at these schools, particularly learners that have an interest in pursuing a career in engineering,” Poswa says. UDDI’s CEO Patricia Dlamini adds: “It is through solicited support from external partners, like Royal HaskoningDHV, that we (as the UDDI) are empowered to deliver maximum value to our target beneficiaries which includes learners and educators as well as small businesses, particularly those in townships. “This partnership is therefore a show of our commitment to advance access to STEMrelated resources and opportunities, as well as career guidance and other learner and teacher support programmes,” ends Dlamini. Besides its education, training and skills development programmes, the UDDI also focuses on enterprise development as a tool to advance business incubation and clustering through the establishment and support of small, micro and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs) while providing support packages, capacity building, new business solutions, investment opportunities and markets. Brexit could benefit local citrus industry LOURENS SCHOEMAN

itrus producers in the Eastern Cape say Britain’s decision to leave the European Union could give a strong boost to the local citrus industry. But the “divorce” process could still take up to two years and there would be little change in the short term, according to Justin Chadwick, head of SA Citrus Processing Association. Chadwick said the import regulations for citrus shipped to Britain were at present the same as for other countries in the EU, but Britain could ease these in future. “An independent Britain would later introduce its own agricultural regulations, or at least scrap those EU regulations which did not necessarily have to apply in Britain,” Chadwick said. Such a move would make citrus export ea-

sier and as a result give a strong boost for the South African citrus industry. “Because citrus will not be a sensitive product with regard to the protection of British

producers, it can be expected that Britain will have lower tax levels for South African citrus.” At present 10% of South African citrus exports go to Britain and 29% to the EU. Hannes de Waal, managing director of the Sundays River Citrus Coop, said South Africa could expect more favourable conditions, especially because Britain was not a citrusproducing country. “This should mean that we get a longer season to sell there and that the unfair black spot regulations will fall by the wayside.” They are cautiously optimistic. “We do not want to underestimate any remaining ‘pro-EU’ sentiment in Britain. International trade agreements can be complex.” Spes du Preez, chairman of the Gamtoos Farmers Association, says it is perhaps too early to draw conclusions. “Few people can actually predict the in-

ternational impact that Brexit will have on the economy as well as on imports and exports. “We must just remember that Britain’s citrus market is not necessarily a growing one. It will therefore not be able to make up for market losses in European countries,” Du Preez said.

owat dertig leerders van Hoërskool Brandwag oefen al maande aan ’n musiekblyspel wat vroeg in Augustus op die planke gaan wees. “Lelie van Lapland” is ’n oorspronklike produksie geskryf deur onderwyser Cecile van der Westhuizen met oorspronklike musiek deur onderwyser Isabella Scheepers en oudleerders Björn Bester en Lamees Barendse. Dit vertel die storie van kinders uit arm huisgesinne wat dikwels veel meer verantwoordelikheid vir die gesin moet dra as hulle maats. Ten spyte van die ernstige tema is die blyspel ’n vrolike kombinasie van sang en dans met twee bedrywe. Die leerders wat die verhoog aandurf, het

as gemeenskapsdiens vir Mandeladag die strate van Lapland op Uitenhage gaan opruim. ’n Ouer, Irene Jonck, wat by Santam werk, was so geïnspireer deur die storie wat die leerders uitbeeld dat sy ook as ’n Mandeladagprojek ’n skenking van R5 000 vir die jongmense van Lapland gereël het. Die geld gaan aangewend word om rekenaarklasse vir die jeug in Lapland aan te bied. “Lelie van Lapland” is op 10, 11 en 12 Augustus by Brandwag op die planke. “Die optrede op 10 Augustus is spesiaal vir senior burgers, wat gratis toegang kry en laerskoolkinders wat die blyspel op dié aand vir R5 kan kyk.

Bakstene gemaak en gebou. “Uniek en veelkleurig.” Daar is drie kinders uit die huwelik gebore. Die twee seuns is reeds oorlede. Die jongste seun, Colin Whitehead, was ‘n kwadrupleeg. Hy is deur sy ouers vir 37 jaar met onselfsugtige liefde en trots versorg, tot met sy dood.

“Ons het grootgeword in ‘n omgewing waar almal welkom was. Knitters to warm the lives of others W

hat started out as a low-key act of charity has blossomed into a fullyfledged network of knitters at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), whose efforts warm the lives of others. NMMU’s Horticulturalist Elana Storm started knitting and crocheting squares for blankets along with a couple of work colleagues with the idea of raising funds through a raffle of the finished product. But like the flowers she and her team nurture on all of NMMU’s campuses, the initiative blossomed. On Monday Elana and some of her fellow knitters handed over 18 blankets to Huis Najaar at Despatch. “The project grew exponentially and so we decided to keep going until Mandela Day,” said Elana.

Apart from the reward of giving, Elana highlighted the positives derived from the ever-growing knitting network of staff members and their friends. “There are about 25 folk across all campuses who have been knitting towards the blankets,” said Elana. “It’s had an amazing effect of bringing staff members out of their offices, into their common rooms. It’s had a great effect on staff morale and team spirit.” )NMMU staff have been called on to live out the legacy of their namesake on Mandela Day by doing something as individuals, departments or even entire faculties that is meaningful for them in line with Madiba’s values, which align with those of the University.

Clever ‘James Bond movie’ staged at Riebeek College “Not Another James Bond Movie” is a parody-farce of an actual James Bond movie such as Skyfall or Spectre. Presented by the Riebeek College Drama Club, the production is about a local shooting and the South African version of a James Bond film. The foreshadowing of a hilarious chain of events occurs during auditions, where the role of James Bond is supposed to go to Johan Smith, an actor with an impressive resumé, but it is given to John Smit, an amateur actor. “James Bond’s” girlfriend and best friend pull a prank on him by staging a kidnapping. The misfit hero takes the prank seriously, resulting in comedic consequences and a war. Well known musician and teacher at Riebeek College, Anton Calitz, is in

charge of the dynamic group which presented this original and clever show. “Is it skyfall? Or a spectre? No. It’s not another James bond movie. Looking for the audience to play to, the cast is characterized by its self-starter determination,” said Calitz. “The script has been a genuinely collectively originated piece directed by Ondela Nkumanda and co-directed by Ambesa Daniels. The cast sacrificed chunks of their holiday to rehearse. “We wish them every success for the hard work they have put in.” )The production will be staged at the Sholto McIntyre Hall tonight at 18:30. Tide is turning against elephant riding C

riminal charges had been laid two years ago by the national council of SPCAs after receiving horrific footage depicting the cruel and abusive training methods employed to control and train baby and young elephants for the elephant-based tourist industry. The footage had been taken on the premises of Elephants of Eden near Plettenberg Bay, a property defined as a safe haven for elephants. It is owned by the same entities who own the Knysna Elephant Park. “I have decided that Lisette Withers and four others should be prosecuted for contravening the Animals Protection Act (Act 71 of 1962) as evidenced in Alexandria CAS 66/05/2014.” So said Advocate SK Abrahams of the Office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in a communication dated 18 July 2016 to Isabel Wentzel, the manager of the NSPCA’s Wildlife Protection Unit. The visuals show elephant calves and juvenile elephants being chained, roped and stretched, shocked with electric cattle prods and hit with bull hooks – all methods used to force these gentle giants to submit to the will of their trainers and handlers. NSPCA Senior Inspector Wendy Willson stated when the matter first came to light, “The elephants show signs of crippling injuries with severely swollen legs and feet, debilitating abscesses and wounds resulting from the abusive use of ropes, chains, and bull hooks.”

=The National Council of SPCAs this week laid cruelty charges against the Knysna Elephant Park (KEP) in Western Cape Province, the Elephants of Eden rehab centre and others, after pictures came to light showing elephants aged between two and seven years old being cruelly tormented to “train” them for lives in the elephant tourism industry.

However the NSPCA was advised in October 2015 by the Grahamstown Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) that the case would not proceed. The NSPCA queried this and was advised in November 2015 that the DPP remained unpersuaded that the methods constituted cruel treatment and/or caused unnecessary suffering for the elephants. Undeterred, the NSPCA pursued the matter by approaching the Office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions and the outcome, as stated above, has been welcomed. “The tide is turning internationally against tourist facilities which offer interactions with wild animals. “Our years of advocacy, investigation and placing before the public the truth behind elephant rides or elephant-back safaris is now being rewarded through public awareness, pressure and impact,” stated Isabel Wentzel. Tour operators including Thompson Safaris will no longer bring tourists to reserves where elephant-back safaris take place. Camp Jabulani in Hoedspruit has announced that from April 2017 it will no longer offer elephant riding to tourists but will rather promote the viewing of elephants in their natural state and environment. “Until we published photographs and irrefutable evidence that this was happening in South Africa, there was a misunderstanding. It was generally thought that such methods were only used in Asia. Not so,” said Wentzel. (-Heilie Combrinck)

On Mandela Day, Schnellecke South Africa joined hands to make a difference in KwaNobuhle’s Mpumelelo Children’s Day Care. The Schnellecke Cares Team consisting of 50 employees travelled to Mpumelelo in taxis with paint, party packs, meat, toys, books and games. Each room of the house had a dedicated team who revamped the rooms to create a dedicated reading corner,

baby room and activity room. In just two hours, every room in the house was repainted and redecorated while the children were entertained outside with soccer, face painting, games, wors rolls and party packs. While displaying all the Schnellecke Spirit values, the employees from Schnellecke South Africa went above and beyond to show that they care. “Wow! We are so thankful for all the surprises and blessings that we

National qualifier round at PEOTR raceway

Runners to tackle ‘fastest’ course in country Come the 30th of July Nelson Mandela Bay will be boasting the presence of some of South Africa’s finest, elite runners. The SA Half Championship competition will be hotly contested over what is arguably the fastest course in the country. The event is proudly sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the City of Champions as partners of EPA on the Legacy Project. The purse is massive, with the winners of the male and female category each walking away with R50 000, maintaining the title

of the richest half marathon race in South Africa. The 21.1km Road Race starts at 07:15, and the accompanying 5km Fun Run will start 15 minutes earlier, at 07:00. The prize giving will commence at 10:45 at the venue. Factory tour takes you into heart of automotive process V

olkswagen’s FactoryTour vehicle is three years old this month and has taken just short of 40 000 visitors into the Uitenhage Factory. The stylish 21-seater vehicle allows visitors to see the vehicle manufacturing process and brings the automotive industry to life. The FactoryTour vehicle was custom built by Volkswagen employees using recycled and unused car parts from the factory. The novelty and ingenuity of their approach in manufacturing the vehicle that consists of three cars resulted in a comfortable, practical and stylish vehicle. “The FactoryTour vehicle is a comfortable and inventive way of showing our technical process

to visitors. A large number of the visitors on the factory tours are school children and I am proud that we are able to ignite engineering and manufacturing passion in young minds by allowing them access to the factory,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa. The FactoryTour vehicle can is pulled by a battery powered tow motor.
