Competition: Enter now for Miss Matric Dance TANYA VAN ZYL
T
he UD News Miss Matric Dance competition is back and we are looking forward to crowning the 2016 Miss Matric Dance winner.
A panel of judges will choose nine (9) finalists at the end of the competition. The judges will also choose 10 wildcard entries and the public will have to vote for their favourite wildcard, who will make up the 10th finalist for this year’s Miss Matric Dance.
Local matric girls who attended their matric dance can enter the competition and stand a chance of winning fabulous prizes. This year we are again looking for the matric girl who has the complete look to become our third Miss Matric Dance. Entrants will be judged on their overall look – including the dress, hair, make-up and accessories – so be sure to send a photo where the judges can clearly get the complete picture.

Riebeek choir beats top schools at Cantamus HEILIE COMBRINCK

iebeek College Girls’ High School choir secured a category win at the prestige Cantamus National Choir Festival that took place at the George Civic Centre. It was hosted by the South Cape Children’s Choir under the auspices of the George Municipality. Loren Campbell, a choir member in Grade 11, said, “It was apparent that we had some tough competition, but during the unadjudicated performance, we performed the musical rendition of the prayer, Phind’ ukhulume, and received a standing ovation.” During the actual competition, the soulful sounds of the Riebeek College choir made them stand out amongst the others. “As we sang, we allowed the spirit of the music to take over, making it one of the best performances we ever had. We felt like winners, whether we earned a trophy or not.” The prize-giving followed a long and anxious wait after the performances of 17 choirs. This is when it was announced that the Riebeek College Choir had won the Girls’ Choir Category. “We were elated and could not contain our joy, springing up from our seats cheering.” Choirs also had the opportunity to attend a workshop on choral singing. “We learned how to make better use of our our voices to produce a better sound on stage and will use these skills acquired for our next performance. We also received feedback on our performance.” Ambesa Daniels, a Grade 11 learner and head of choir said, “We are deeply thankful, not only for our God-given talent, but also for amazing teachers who were willing to put in their time and effort to make this tour a success.” The choir would like to give thanks to Cathy-Jane Mintoor (choir conductor and teacher-in-charge), Marilyn Woods (Riebeek College principal), Mrs Snyman, Mrs Mapoma, Mrs Metcalf and Mr Jonas for their contributions to the trip.

‘Befoeterde bul in my tuin’ CARALEE DORFLING

elanie du Toit van Uitenhage is nie ’n boer nie, maar sy het ’n bul wat die afgelope maand in haar tuin boer. Die groot swart loslopende bul kom soggens nog voor 06:45 en vreet homself trommeldik in haar tuin in Fairbridge Heights. Dan skuur hy sommer enigiets wat jeuk teen haar bome af. “Brekfis, middagete en aandete is daai bul hier,” sê Du Toit. Bedags loop hy blykbaar oor die besige Graaff-Reinetweg om by Willowdam uit te kom, waar hy dan sy dors les en onder die koeltebome lê, voordat hy weer die aand ’n draai by Du Toit se tuin maak. “En om alles te kroon, het die bul nogal ’n ‘vriend’ vir ete oorgenooi. Sommer net so. Die Du Toit’s sal mos kos voorsien.” Haar vyf lollipop-bome en vier jong palmbome voor haar huis is blykbaar soos soetkoek deur die tweemanskap verorber. “Ons het die afgelope vakansiedag nogal in die tuin gewerk om die beeste se skade te herstel, maar dit is alles ongedaan,” sê sy moedeloos. Du Toit sê sy ken die veebeheernommer al uit haar kop, so baie het sy dit al geskakel. “Die mense van die diereskut kom uit, maar jaag die bul net rond en kry hom nie gevang nie.” By navraag het Deirdré Swift, voorsitter van die Uitenhage Dierebeskermingsvereniging, gesê sy weet presies watter los-
lopende bul dit is. “Ek het al self amper in hom vasgery toe die bul oor Graaff-Reinetweg loop. “Ek het al twee keer die veebeheermense gekontak om die bul skut toe te neem, maar hulle beweer die bul is te wild om te vang.” Volgens ’n werker van die veebeheereenheid, wie se naam nie genoem mag word nie, het hulle al verskeie kere probeer om die bul op hok te jaag, maar die bul is té wild om

vas te keer. “Die bees is baie aggressief. Students from L&J Karate Academy in Uitenhage competed at the 8th Japan Shotokan Karate Association (JSKA) World Karate Championships hosted in Swakopmund, Namibia. In total 14 countries competed at the event with more than 300 competitors competing and more than 1 000 divisions run over the two-day period. A highlight of the event was when L&J Karate student Stephan Terblanche won the Men’s Open Kumite final beating the current JSKA World Champion, and local Namibian favourite, De Wet Moolman. Fietsryers van verskeie skole uit die metro gaan deelneem. Elke deelnemer wat die wedren klaarmaak sal ’n medalje ontvang en daar is hope gelukkige trekkings. Skoliere wat lus is om op hul fietse te klim en die baan aan te vat kan nog Saterdagoggend by die skool inskryf. Dit beloof om ’n opwindende wedren te wees met ’n gedeelte van die baan wat deur die werkswinkels kronkel. Die Spur Skole Bergfiets-reeks se nasionale kampioenskappe word in Oktober by Magaliesburg gehou. Dit is vanjaar die agtste agtereenvolgende jaar wat dié bergfiets-reeks gehou word en die deelnemergetalle bly toeneem. Vanjaar het fietsryers van meer as 480 Suid-Afrikaanse skole ingeskryf. Daniel Pienaar is die afgelope twee jaar die wenners van die hoërskole- afdeling in die Oos-Kaap. Top young chess players in action The 2016 African Youth Chess Championships will be hosted courtesy of The Boardwalk at its Light Houses venue from 21 to 29 August 2016. The event will see 520 top young chess players with their teams and supporters, from 15 countries pit their skills against one another in the tour-
nament. This is the largest meeting of young chess players, representing countries from across Africa, hosted to date. The public is encouraged to come down and watch the exciting chess battles. The event promises nail-biting competition and the stakes for the young players are high.
