Drive to change girls’ lives E

ach year young girls in impoverished communities can miss up to 50 days of school for not having the correct hygiene products at their disposal. This important, but often unmentioned, challenge of keeping young women in school is at the heart of the Caring4Girls and Trek4Mandela Initiatives. Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) and his wife, Wendy recently delivered over 2 300 sanitary towels to Nkululeko Secondary School in KwaNobuhle. Honouring Gugu Zulu These sanitary towels were purchased using funds raised by the late Gugu Zulu, member of the Volkswagen Motorsport family, during his Trek4Mandela campaign to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in July. In Gugu’s honour, further donations were arranged by Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen employees as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative themed ‘Volkswagen for Good’. In addition to Thomas and Wendy’s delivery, over 15 000 packets of sanitary towels will have been distributed by the end of this week to more than 1 200 girls to keep them in school until their final exams in November. This equates to a

Test drive that matters The delivery to Nonkululeko Secondary School in KwaNobuhle was delivered as part of the Amarok Social Test Drive Campaign. Amarok Social Test Drive allows companies and individuals to put the Amarok through its paces whilst delivering much-needed supplies to people in hard-toreach communities in South Africa. To date, the campaign dubbed ‘the test drive that matters’, has travelled more than 16 000 kilometres across the country and delivered over 15.8 tonnes of items such as water to the drought-hit towns in Free State and sewing machines to unemployed women in KwaZulu Natal. “Education is one of the focus points in our CSR programme. Volkswagen has a responsibility to help vulnerable members of the communities that we serve. “Especially young girls who sometimes stay away from school because they cannot afford to buy hygiene products. “We hope that our Amarok Social Test Drive delivery will make a difference in the lives of these young girls and make others aware of this important need in poor communities,” said Schaefer

ll residents of the Nelson Mandela Bay, including stakeholders, civil society, government departments and parastatals, are encouraged to participate in the public consultation meetings in order to improve development and service delivery in Nelson Mandela Bay. The Municipal Systems Act stipulates that a municipality must develop a culture of municipal governance that complements formal

representative governance and must for this purpose encourage and create conditions for the local community to participate in the affairs of the municipality. As from Monday, 19 September until Thursday, 27 October 2016 the municipality will be conducting a series of public meetings on its 2016/17 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget. These public consultations will be led by

Intervention secures delivery of paper for vehicle licences Post offices in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) on Monday took delivery of 14 000 sheets of the specialised paper used for the

printing of vehicle licence disks. “I reported two weeks ago that a countrywide shortage of specialised paper at licens-

ing centres had spread to the Eastern Cape, particularly NMBM. This meant ‘face-value’ licence disks could not be printed,” said Mar-

shall von Buchenroder, DA member of parliament. “I have been given the assurance that, apart from Monday’s delivery to the NMBM, stock will be delivered to all licensing offices in the province from the government printers by the end of the week.” Von Buchenroder urges motorists to ensure that they renew their vehicle licences so they don’t fall foul of the law. “We are delighted that the bureaucratic bungling in this matter has been addressed. The provincial economy is in an extremely fragile state and every effort must be made to ensure that its wheels continue to turn smoothly,” said Von Buchenroder. According to him a well-run government will never allow a situation to develop like it currently was, where citizens are forced to drive vehicles with expired licence disks. The Uitenhage High Past Pupils and Teachers Association (UHPPTA) will be hosting its annual gala dinner and dance this Saturday, 24 September 2016, at the VW People Pavilion.
