Public invited to Willow Dam cleanup HEILIE COMBRINCK

akes, water boots, waders and many hands of enthusiastic residents are what are needed to assist with a cleanup project at Willow Dam on Saturday morning.

“We received numerous complaints from residents regarding the condition of the dam,” said councillor Pieter Terblanche from Ward 51, who initiated the clean-up project. “Complaints are especially of the many glass bottles and polystyrene items thrown into the dam by party-goers. “We did inspection and it is a huge matter

of concern. It would be great if those who so often complain can also join us from 08:00 till 11:00,” said Terblanche. Willow Dam apparently once was home to up to 50 different bird species, but this number has dropped dramatically, mainly as a result of the poor conditions at the dam. Terblanche requests owners of rowing boats or floats to assist on Saturday, as most of the items needed to be removed are in the water. Black bags will be provided and participation is at the volunteers’ own risk. “We wish to thank the team of East Cape Motors who did a tremendous job with their clean-up project at Willow Dam,” said Terblanche.

The Museum tells the story of the railways in the Eastern Cape with the station consisting of a house where the Station Master lived, his office, the luggage room, restaurant, the ticket office, bar and a health and safety room. In order to maintain this historical site for future generations the Uitenhage Historical Museum approached the Uitenhage Lions Club to appeal to local business and the public to assist them with sponsorships for the Old Railway Museum. The Health and Safety Room was identified for refurbishment and Netcare Cuyler Hospital approved a sponsorship that included material and Smart Cabinets & Fittings CC sponsored the labour. “I am very grateful. For the community of Uitenhage to take this initiative, makes a huge difference and a relief,” said Mvoko.

Free health screenings held in KwaNobuhle R

otary clubs throughout South Africa, including the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South, are once again participating in the annual Rotary Family Health Days (RFHD). This will be held during October and is done in collaboration with various provincial Departments of Health, together with the support of several companies, including Media24. According to Leo Doria from the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South, last year’s RFHD served well over 1 000 people in the Uitenhage and Despatch regions alone. This regional project is led by Rotarian Dr Dayalan Naidoo. The 2016 Rotary Family Health Day will

take place at the LoveLife Centre, at the corner of Ponana Tini and Tize Street in KwaNobuhle, on 13 & 14 October. Doors are open from 08:30 to 16:00 on both days. The free health services will include HIV testing services, TB screening, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, the provision of contraceptives, dental care, eye screening and much more. The DA-led coalition government in charge of running the affairs of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has a multi-pillared approach to deliver services. This is according to councillor Retief Odendaal, MMC for Budget and Treasury, who during an IDP and Public Participation meeting said they would firstly like to stop fraud and corruption. “An operational fraud and corruption hotline, manned and managed by a professional entity will be launched soon and the capacitating of the municipality’s Internal Audit Unit will receive urgent attention,” said Odendaal. “We need to create jobs. Nelson Mandela Bay currently contributes 44% to the Gross Domestic Product of the Eastern Cape Province. We would like to improve this contribution beyond 50% over the next couple of years. “It is imperative that we create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive to ensure the creation of more opportunities that we can benefit from. “We need to bolster the tourism industry, especially local tourism. In addition to all of this we would like to build a caring city by turning informal settlements or townships into suburbs. All areas must be treated equally and it is my task to identify money to make sure it happens,” said Odendaal. With the meeting held at the Woolboard Exchange, representatives from various sectors such as business, arts and culture, government parastatals and civil society attended the IDP session to give their input on how the city must be managed. Kevin Hustler, Chief Executive Officer of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, said the filling of critical vacancies both at a technical and managerial level should receive attention and said if infrastructure issues are dealt with businesses will find it more viable to remain in the city. Hustler further committed to formal submissions on behalf of the business sector regarding the Integrated Development Plan and the city’s Adjustment Budget.

Total of 230 suspects arrested in U’hage Cluster A total of 230 suspects were arrested in the Uitenhage Cluster during the past weekend. The suspects were arrested on charges relating to murder, rape, robbery, attempted murder, housebreaking and theft, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft and possession of suspected stolen goods. Seven arrests were made for driving under the influence of liquor. A total of 18 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R9 000. Seventeen persons were arrested and detained after illegal drugs were found in their possession. ‘Boeta, daar is hoop vir jou,’ sê dominee met sy wen-boek ALVENÉ APPOLLIS

Vir Jan Vermeulen (56), ’n dominee en skrywer van Despatch, lê dié “verskil maak” egter nie nét in die bediening nie, maar ook in die mag van die pen. Vermeulen stel op 19 Oktober sy derde boek, Asem, bekend. Dié aangrypende verhaal oor ’n tienerseun wat sy weglooppa haat en met ’n pakkie rottegif wil doodmaak, maar later in dwelms verval, het die eerste prys in die Lapa-jeugromankompetisie gewen. Dié roman – oor hoop – is sy eerste ná Die laaste dans (1998) en Geraamtes dra nie klere nie (2000). “Die 15 jaar se stilte was maar oor ’n mens so besig was; die lewe gebeur,” sê hy tydens ’n kuier oor ’n koppie tee by sy huis in Osse-

wastraat, Despatch. “Die nuwe boek is glad nie geskoei op my eie ervaring nie; ek het nog nooit dagga in my lewe gerook nie,” spot hy. “Ek dink ek identifiseer tog met die karakter met die afwesigheid van sy pa. Ek was nog ’n kind toe my eie pa dood is, so ek verstaan die leemte. Maar in die bediening het ek baie met jongmense te doen gehad; ek ken tieners se hartklop – veral die gebrokenes.” Vermeulen, oorspronklik van Namibië, het sy bediening in die NG Kerk in George begin voordat hy sy beroep in dié genootskap in Despatch voortgesit het. Hy het uit die NG Kerk weggebreek “vir ’n nuwe begin” en dien nou “nie-amptelik” as dominee op die dorp – ’n beroep wat hom as kind gekies het. “Ek was in die laerskool toe die verskilmaak-saadjie in my begin roer het,” onthou hy. “Ek het een dag in die asblik buite die huis gekrap en die pragtigste lilakleurige parfuumboksie gesien.

“Uit nuuskierigheid het ek gewonder wat in dié mooi houer kon wees, maar toe ek dit oopmaak, was dit vol sigaretstompies en as. “Dit het my ontstel. Ek het gedink: Dis hoe ons as mense ook is – mooi aan die buitekant, maar binne . . .” Asem is egter nie ’n preek nie, sê hy. Dis wel sy manier om aan tieners wat met die lewe worstel te sê: Boeta, daar is hoop vir jou. “Dis ’n storie wat mens herinner dat dit nie saak maak hoe ver grond toe jy geval het nie, maar dat jy weer kan opstaan. Selfs dominees val; ek inkluis. Maar ek glo in hoop en dié geloof in die hoop is beslis sentraal in die boek.” Die boek word op 19 Oktober deur die ATKV Despatch Jeugtak bekendgestel by Hoërskool Despatch. The centre caters for newborns up to 5 year olds and is bilingual. Jerome explained that they’ve decided to call the daycare centre “Family Affair, as it means happiness, joy, and that we are all one happy family that wants to make a difference in our community. “There is a need in this area for a reputable daycare centre. As parents we have experienced a lot of issues with nannies and we realized many other parents have experienced the same. Thus the idea of the daycare centre, to give parents peace of mind and their children the opportunity to receive proper development and education.” According to Ruth James, manager of the centre, they have implemented accredited educational programmes with Melissa Smith as the qualified educator. Parents are invited to pop-in any time at the

centre to see what their kids are up to. Extra-mural activities like Monkeynastix will be hosted at the centre and children will be taken on educational outings. Rock the Hage in support of SPCA T

he fabulous Rock the Hage musical event is the largest annual fund-raiser for the Uitenhage & District SPCA and will take to the stage on October 14th & 15th. “We thank the public for their support in the past and invite them once again to the rock concert to raise much needed funds for the local SPCA,” said Deirdre Swift, Chairperson of the Uitenhage & District SPCA. “As all are aware, the SPCA is totally dependent on public support to keep the shelter’s doors open. A successful fundraiser will help boost the coffers for the busy holiday period coming up,” said Swift.

Student protests disrupt blood drives The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is ringing an urgent alarm-bell and calling on its donors to assist. “Students are an invaluable resource in saving lives as they make up a large proportion of the national blood donor base,” says SANBS spokesperson Vanessa Raju. “Yet the protest actions at universities have disrupted scheduled blood drives and the situation is negatively impacting on the national blood supply.”

SANBS must collect about 3000 units of blood daily in order to meet daily demand for this resource and keep stock levels above the twoday mark - VANESSA RAJU Blood drives at university campuses and schools yield about 40% of units of blood collected annually and although SANBS has systems in place to minimise the effects of shortages experienced during exams, protests have been an unpredictable factor. As a result of the dangerously low blood stocks, SANBS is appealing to members of the public who are due for their regular donation to visit the nearest donor centre as soon as they can because many lives will be affected by this. “A shortage in blood hinders our ability to save hundreds of lives daily because without an adequate supply, essential treatment for various patients cannot occur,” says SANBS spokesperson Vanessa Raju. Van Stadens walk and bike ride The Friends of van Stadens are having their Wild Flower Wander again. It will take place in the van Stadens Wild Flower reserve on Saturday. There will be a fun trail run at 08:00, a family mountain bike ride at 10:00 and the indigenous plant sale to promote indigenous gardening, starting at 09:00 to 13:00. This is their annual fundraising event and the public are invited please to support these Friends of van Stadens.

Bands and artists to perform include: Hazard, Day Trippers, Dark Custard, John & John, Pink Lipzz, Brian McNicol, Riaan Vogel and Jimmy Lemley. The Muir College as well as Riebeek College school bands will again do the battle for the best school band honours. Organised by John van Vuuren and his team, Rock the Hage will take place at Muir College, the co-beneficiary of the event. The music starts at 18:00 (Friday 14th) and 17:00 (Saturday, 15th).
