Pasop vir Sassakaart swendelaar ALVENÉ APPOLLIS HEILIE COMBRINCK ’n Polisiebeampte van Uitenhage is oor die kole gehaal nadat sy ’n bejaarde wat ’n saak van bedrog aanhangig gemaak het, gevra het om dié klag terug te trek. Die bejaarde (79), wat anoniem wil bly, het in Oktober ’n saak van bedrog by die polisiekantoor op Uitenhage aangemeld nadat ’n swendelaar haar Sassa-kaart gebruik het om lugtyd en elektrisiteit te koop. Sy is in Oktober deur die vermeende swendelaar wat hom as ’n agent van die SuidAfrikaanse agentskap vir maatskaplike sekerheid (Sassa) voorgedoen het, op haar landlyn gebel. Sy sê die man het gesê hy wil Sassa
se “databasis op datum hou” en het daarom haar kaartbesonderhede nodig. Toe sy op 1 November – toe haar toelae inbetaal is – haar geld wou onttrek, was daar slegs R1 100 in haar rekening oor in plaas van die gewone R1 530. “My kind, toe die man bel was my bloeddruk so hoog dat ek nie reg gedink het nie. Eers toe hy die foon afgelui het, het ek besef ek het nou net in ’n lokval getrap,” vertel sy.
“Die man het vir my die eerste vier syfers van my kaart gegee en ek moes net die laaste drie, my PIN en my ID-nommer vir hom gee. “Ek is sommer die volgende dag polisie toe om ’n saak te open. “Wie weet hoeveel mense op die dorp hy uitvang?” Sy sê ’n polisievrou het haar Maandag gebel en gesê sy moet maar die saak terugtrek, omdat dit “moeilik gaan wees om hom op te spoor”.
“Ek het vir haar gesê ek gaan nie. Hulle het dan die man se nommer, so hulle móét hom kan vang,” sê sy. “Kyk, ek gaan daai geld nooit weer terugkry nie. Toe ek op 1 November my geld gaan trek, was daar ’n stoporder op my rekening vir lugtyd en elektrisiteit. Ek het vir die polisie die selfoonnommer en die rekeningnommer vir die elektrisiteit gegee.” Kapt. Gerda Swart, ’n polisiewoordvoerder, sê die saak wat aanhangig gemaak is, word beslis nog ondersoek. Mayor warns residents against water wastage N
elson Mandela Bay mayor Athol Trollip is concerned about the state of water supply in the metro because the city does not
have enough water to serve its residents’ demands, municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said. He said the mayor was calling on residents to reduce their water usage by 15%. “He is adamant that every leak or pipe burst must be reported to the operations centre so that it can be attended to,” he said. Trollip is aware, as are most residents, that the turnaround time in attending to leaks is often much longer than anticipated. It is about 15 days at this stage. Pipe bursts, where water is gushing out, receive priority over slower leaks. Residents should phone 0800 205 050 in the event of any municipal water wastage being spotted. The water customer care service, of which the operations centre forms the core, was adjudged to be the best of all metro centres in the country last year. Die ereveldwagters-groep is reeds 110 mense sterk en het vanjaar nagenoeg R2,5 miljoen ingesamel ter wille van dié saak, het Theo Ferreira, een van dié vrywilligers, vertel. “Elkeen van ons gee gratis ons tyd, voertuie en brandstof om bewaring by Addo te steun,” sê Ferreira. “Insameling is slegs een van ons funksies, en dan sorg ons ook dat die fondse aangewend word vir spesifieke projekte.” Hul insameling het egter ’n reuse hupstoot gekry, omdat Absa in ’n japtrap al 60 kaartjies vir hul buitelugkonsert – met 18 plaaslike klassieke kunstenaars – en ete opgeraap het. Die aand sluit ook ’n wildrit in. “Ons wou iets uniek en eksklusief skep, want anders kon ons eintlik net ’n saal gehuur het vir die ete. Nou is dit eerder ’n ervaring – en as dit reën, is dit deel van die ervaring.” Die gaste hoef ook nie bekommerd te wees dat hul ervaring met die groot vyf té persoonlik sal wees nie, voeg hy speels by. “Elkeen sal hul viergang-maal rustig kan geniet. Die wilde diere is naby, maar gelukkig hou olifante nie juis van gekookte kos nie.”

The moon will be about 356 509 km from the centre of the earth and it is likely that higher tides will occur. The moon will appear larger and brighter than at other times because it will be closer

Old Collegians reunion The firstever reunion of the once top local rugby club, Old Collegians Rugby & Football Club was held recently at Barkly Street Theatre in Uitenhage. Driving this “OC” or also referred to as “Red Socks” event were former captain, eighth man and EP player Calvin van Appel and team mate Leon Ferreira who also played for EP. The club was estab lished during 1928 and an old dirt track near the railway station, was used as their initial rugby field. During the 1990s, Old Collegians and Swifts Rugby Club amalgamated becoming the Uitenhage Rugby Club.

Promotion: Wellbalanced daycare centre for kids Junior Einsteins pre-prep, an educational day-care centre for kids aged 2-5 years old, was established two years ago in Mountain View, Uitenhage, by its principal Cindy Rayners. This English-based centre provides full day care, half day care as well as after day care to assist primary school learners with their homework. They also do holiday care (07:0014:00) except for during December holiday. The centre at 19 Mannerin Drive is situated in an enclosed, secure and safe area with an outdoor play ground and bright and child friendly education-orientated classroom. The children enjoy regular educational excursions like visiting the local fire station or animal touch farm. “We follow a series of themes with the main focus being learning whilst having fun,” said Cindy. “At Einsteins we follow a structured learning programme which is based on Christian
principles.” Cindy is assisted by Lameez Nelson (teaching 4-5 year olds) and Adaure Barendse (2-3 year olds). All three are trained and qualified ECD (early childhood development) teachers who continuously keep up to date with the latest trends in teaching and the educational environment. “Praise to the Lord for Little Einsteins which really is blessed in many ways. Therefore all my thanks go to the Lord. “Also special thanks to my husband for his continuous support,” said Cindy. Swimming twins target Olympics A
fter a successful African Championships in Bloemfontein, the 20-year-old swimming twins Alard and Alaric Basson from Uitenhage now have their eyes set on the World Short Course Championships in Canada. The two NMMU-Madibaz swimmers returned from the continental meeting with a bunch of medals and will be looking to put that experience to good use in December. Alaric, a breaststroke specialist, returned from the African champs with a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke and silver in the 200m event, as well as golds in the 4x100 mixed and men’s medley relays. Although spending many hours in the water under the tutelage of coach Mark Edge, Alaric said they always kept their focus on the bigger picture. “All the training can be quite tough, but then you have to look at what your goals are. At the moment it is the Worlds but, ultimately, I’m aiming for the 2020 Olympics and my mindset is always on that prize.” The second-year student-athletes, who are both studying building engineering at NMMU, said they started swimming at an early age. “Our dad saw us in the pool at home and felt we had some talent so he signed us up for the local Dolphin Club,” said Alaric. “From there we eventually linked up with Mark and have been with him for 11 years.” Like his brother, Alard said he was happy with his results at the African champs, where he took gold in two relays and bronze medals in the 50m and 100m butterfly events. “Considering we were at altitude, which we are not used to, I was pretty pleased the way it turned out.” With Tokyo 2020 in the back of his mind, Alard said he was focused on putting in an extra effort to improve his chances. “You always have to go the extra mile and push yourself to the limit,” he said. “I always think of the other guys who are also training,
