Pet food Christmas tree at U’hage outdoor market HEILIE COMBRINCK
I
n celebration of the Uitenhage Market’s third year, the organisers wish to form a Christmas tree with cans of donated pet food. But they need the public’s support by means of donating these cans! This project is part of the great excitement with which Women In Business wish to celebrate the market’s third year and also the last one of 2016. “We came a long way and defeated the odds. I would like to thank all stall holders who stuck with us through the ups and downs,” said Lilly de Jong from Women In Business. “Never did we think that this platform for local and home based businesses to sell and market their goods to the public without having high overheads, would grow to the largest monthly outdoor market in the Eastern Cape.” A part of this month’s market proceeds will be towards the SPCA. “We request our visitors please tosupport the project by bringing a can of pet food with to help build a Christmas tree. All cans can be delivered to our information desk at the market.”
The Uitenhage Market currently boasts 3 600 Facebook likes and brings the community of Uitenhage and surrounding areas together, listening to live music, eating good food, whilst children enjoy themselves in the kiddie entertainment area. Lilly said there were stall holders who had never missed a market day since its inception during December 2013. “It warms my heart if I hear the countless stories of the difference that our market is making in the lives of so many others. “Whether it being the platform to help put a child through school, giving people independence, paying bills or growing a small business. “I would also like to thank the visitors. Without you we wouldn’t have a market. We have visitors that came from as far as George, East Londen and Graaff Reinet. And we have our local loyal supporters that come to our market every month no matter what,” said Lilly. It will be the last Uitenhage Market of the year. The market is held on Sunday from 09:00-15:00 at Willow Dam. Entrance is free of charge. He was nominated by Mail & Guardian as one of the top 200 Young South Africans and among the list of exhibitions where his art was seen are countries like Switzerland and France. “I was driving past the building together with my cousin, Babalu Fihla, and the wall just stood out. I immediately knew I wanted to do something different on that wall, something that could be way more far reaching. And then I decided it would be a portrait of Thuli Madonsela.” Fihla’s artwork captured the expression of a person who serves as a beacon of patriotic pride. A person who gained respect for her ability to address corruption in top structures and who speaks truth to power. “For the past couple of years, this is what I have been doing, going to derelict places or buildings giving them a rejuvenating finish through my graffiti or murals. “I mostly do my normal graffiti and lettering which might look like very conventional graffiti to most people. In South Africa this is not really celebrated as a form of art but seen as vandalism.” Fihla titled the Maduna Road Thuli “My

e wants his daughter one day to become just as strong and principled as Thuli Madonsela, therefore Buntu Fihla, a well-known artist, painted a largerthan-life Thuli on a wall of a derelict building in Maduna Road, Uitenhage. For Fihla this was exactly the right spot, because for him art must serve among other things, to portray a strong message, hope and inspiration. Indeed this is the case with the “Maduna Road Thuli”, as art is a powerful social commentary medium and Thuli Madonsela one of the most respected persons in the world. Facing a combination of these two, subconsciously makes one bow from pure admiration. “As a new parent to a daughter there is not a better example - of the kind of and standard we want black woman to rise to and to take on all kinds of injustices - than Thuli Madonsela,” said Buntu Fihla, an art photographer, graffiti artist and graphic designer operating in the art industry since 2006.
“I immediately knew I want to do something different on that wall, something that could be way more far-reaching. And then I decided it would be a portrait of Thuli Madonsela.” - BUNTU FIHLA President”. “When you talk about Thuli Madonsela, you talk about so many values that all of South Africa loves. You talk about anti-corruption you talk about fees must fall you talk about principles, good leadership, all of these things in one person. So, it is just really to say this is one of South Africa’s most respected persons. Certainly in my view.” Finding right walls in good public areas where there is a lot of foot traffic is a difficult task. “It almost costs me more money to find a
good wall than the actual painting. This is because you have to follow protocol and sometimes there is red tape, and so many people to talk to before you finally get the go-ahead. It is very time-consuming.” Fihla invites owners of buildings with walls which have good visual value, on which he can have his murals or graffiti painted to contact him via his website. Some of his graffiti art can be viewed in the upper part of Parliament Street in a short corridor behind a black gate. His art can also be viewed on his website www.buntufihla.com He is currently also working on a project where he will be shooting portraits of influential women in the community where he hails from, Phakamisa near King William’s Town. He also did a large project where he changed the feel of a whole township street through various murals with different themes. The following quote from Thuli Madonsela might be best suited to the mural in Maduna Road: “At times we to have to stand alone with only hope as our companion. If you stand for the truth and do so long enough hope does eventually pay.”

elson Mandela Bay Tourism has collaborated with Mastertons Coffee and Tea Specialists, the oldest and most established coffee roaster in South Africa, to develop a unique blend of exclusive coffee: “The Blend of the Bay”. Gearing up for a bumper summertime T
he Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is preparing for a bumper Summer Season with activities galore scheduled to take place from middle December until the end of January. “For the first time I am staying in Nelson Mandela Bay for the holiday season. I am going to encourage my family and friends to come and I want you to do the same,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive, Mayor Athol Trollip. Mobile travel guide app to boost local events All explorers to the Bay, whether locals or visitors, can now make use of a smooth and easy to use mobile platform which shows the surprisingly many activities and what-to-do things in the area. The newly upgraded mobile application “Nelson Mandela Bay Travel Guide” offers an updated user interface and improved functionality. “It aims to provide users with an in-depth look into all the exciting activities such as: upcoming events, things to see and do, accommodation, transport, business and emergency contacts and free wi-fi spots. “Many people who will see the application for the first time would be very surprised at how much there is to do, be it sight seeing, heritage, amenities or entertainment,” said Chief Executive Officer of Nelson

Eastern Cape film festival is heading ‘home’ HEILIE COMBRINCK
T
he second annual Eastern Cape Film Festival was held in East London and will now be heading “home” as it will be hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay for the following two years. “As expectations are high that we produce international standard work, there are great expectations. Eastern Cape creatives who are based in Johannesburg want to come back home,” said nationally renowed filmmaker Phumla Hopa, an executive producer in Isidingo. Provincial filmakers and administrators converged at the Miriam Makeba Audio Visual Centre under the banner of the Eastern Cape Film Festival. It was jointly hosted by the Eastern Cape Information Technology Initiative (ECITI), Radio Ya Bantu and the Eastern Cape Film Forum. The festival, through its theme “Women in
Dagboek . Diary
Film, a different take in telling our stories” commemorated the 60th anniversay of the march against the pass laws organised by the Federation of South African Women in 1956. It was headlined by nationally renowed filmmakers like Phumla Hopa and Pam Zokufa, a pioneering black female camera person as well as Noxolo Nelana, a storyteller who delivered masterclasses on various aspects of filmmaking. Festival Director, Nceba Mqolomba, who hails from Uitenhage, said “We had established an aspiring filmmakers forum from youth to senior citizens sharing ideas and networking to activate the Eastern Cape Film Industry in order for us to catch up with other provinces as film locations. “With the Eastern Cape’s unique fauna and flora, scenery and diverse terrain we really have an unfair advantage.” He said the film festival would now be heading to Nelson Mandela Bay Metro for the next two years.

Total of 243 suspects arrested A total of 243 suspects have been arrested by police members from the Uitenhage Cluster during crime prevention operations held last weekend. These suspects were arrested for various crimes which include murder, robbery, rape, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and the possession of suspected stolen goods. Ten (10) persons were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor. According to police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, a total of 29 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R14 500. The sus-
pects were also arrested on charges relating to protection orders, malicious damage to property, shoplifting and 22 suspects were detained for the illegal possession of drugs. The South African Police Service appeals to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property. he Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Council will consider the implementation of punitive water restrictions at a full sitting of its Council today as calls for water conservation were not sufficiently heeded. Councillor Annette Lovemore, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure and Engineering, said: “We will be tabling an item in council to impose punitive water restrictions in the metro. Thus far, we have asked people to save water. For the last three months, we have made this call.
“We need to save 50 million litres of water a day. That did not happen as we saved in the region of 30 million litres a day. We saved, but it is certainly not enough. “Our dams are getting emptier all the time with the heat and not enough rain. So, we have no other option but to say that we will keep on encouraging people to save. “However, we will have to punish you. It will not affect the poorest of the poor. It will affect the wealthier who can afford to use more water. They will feel it in their pockets,” she said. Chance to explore remote pristine beach The Dolphin Challenge has added another family event to the day’s offerings of extreme running, mountain biking and relay running. On Sunday, 11th December there will also be a family fun cycle. It is all about experiencing the remote stretches of relatively unknown beach between Kabeljous River and Maitlands River Mouth. Runners will start their 38km journey at 06:00. In making their way along the beach to Maitlands they will have to swim through the Gamtoos River where assistance will be provided by EC Coastal Water Rescue. Opportunity for the kids to be someone else’s hero Spur IRONKIDS has launched their campaign, Spur Mini Hero, to raise awareness of the IRONMAN 4 the Kids Charity Trust, which is the official charity of the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship. The charity started in 2005 and the goal was to raise R11 000. Now 12 years later their goal is 2 million rand, to support 21 charities associated with the trust. The IRONMAN African Championship and Spur IRONKIDS events both take place on the first weekend of April, with Spur IRONKIDS happening on Saturday 1 April and IRONMAN on Sunday 2 April 2017. Each Spur IRONKIDS participant, between the ages of 6 and 13 years old, will swim 100m and run 1.2km, crossing the same finish line as the IRONMAN athletes on Hobie Beach. The campaign brings together not only Spur’s philosophy of participation and an active, healthy lifestyle but it is an opportunity for the children to be someone else’s hero. sponsored by Moore’s Meat Wholesalers. How to drive through a veld fire As dry conditions prevail in most parts of South Africa, water restrictions are enforced and temperatures rise so does the risk of veld fires. Drivers who are caught in the smoke of a veld fire are at risk of a crash due to limited visibility. The best way to avoid becoming a statistic in this situation is to be prepared and learn how to react if you are caught in a fire. The MD of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, provides some tips on how to drive through a veld fire: • If you are caught in a fire reduce your speed, as visibility will be severely reduced. • Drive with your headlights and emergency lights on. • If the smoke is extremely thick do not attempt to drive through it. You risk colliding
with other vehicles doing the same or risk driving off the road into the fire. Rather safely turn around and find another route. • Do not exit your car. Your car is the safest place to be if you are caught in a fire as it provides the most protection from heat and smoke. • Unlike portrayals in the movies, the petrol tank is unlikely to explode from the heat of a veld fire. • Stay low in your car and keep the windows and vents closed. • Give emergency vehicles priority on the roads and listen to their instructions. They have the most experience and will get you safely out of a veld fire. • If you need to stop, find a clearing or a section of the roadside which has low vegetation. Turn your ignition off and lights on.
