Water leaks: Metro’s urge to repair quicker “W
ater is a precious resource, we cannot allow it to run to waste. We are losing about 25% of our treated water to leaks right now.” This is according to councillor Annette Lovemore, Nelson Mandela Bay’s MMC for Infrastructure and Engineering, who is determined to win the war on leaks. At a recently held council meeting council-

Where we should have 54 plumbers in our Water and Sanitation Directorate, we had only 21. It is simply impossible to win the war on leaks under such circumstances. We are filling these vacancies.” The metro is receiving about 3 000 calls a
month at its 24 hour operations centre, dealing with reports of water leaks. “We have a backlog, with about 20% of complaints lodged in June still not addressed. We have appointed contractors to help us blitz the backlog and get our leak-fixing turnaround time down to acceptable levels,” said Councillor Lovemore. )Report water leaks at 0800 20 50 50.
Landmark Swartkops bridge given make-over One of the oldest steel bridges in Nelson Mandela Bay has been given a long overdue makeover by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality as it had been found to be structurally unsafe and a danger to motorists. The Swartkops Bridge has gone through a meticulous transformation, and now this iconic landmark’s lifespan has been extended by 15 to 20 years. The bridge was originally built in 1879 and reconstructed in 1974.
The municipality recently took a decision to refurbish the structure to prevent it from rusting further and possibly collapsing. NMMU honours U’hage stalwarts T
hree formidable Nelson Mandela Bay residents were honoured at the annual Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Council Prestige Awards for their immense contribution to the community. Two of the recipients hail from Uitenhage, the late unionist and workers’ rights activist Phumzile John Gomomo and former NMMU Council member Cumngce Gawe. The third recipient was internationally renowned motivational speaker Alison Botha. Gomomo - ‘father’ of NUMSA Phumzile John Gomomo attended Marymount High School in Uitenhage, but left school in Grade 8 and later completed his matric through correspondence courses. In 1963, he joined Volkswagen of South Africa and was assisted by the company to study Labour Relations at the former University of Port Elizabeth, now Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. His early understanding of South African political and social challenges was greatly enhanced through his association with the workers’ struggle. In the early 70’s he emerged as one of the prominent leaders of workers and served the trade union with distinction. During 1987 a number of metal workers’ unions came together to form the National Union of Metalworkers in South Africa (NUMSA). Gomomo led these unity talks that produced one of the biggest unions in

South Africa and the largest metalworkers’ union in Africa. Gomomo was not self-centered, ambitious nor a careerist and always associated himself with the toiling masses as a true servant of the people. Sadly on 22 January 2008 he met his untimely death at Cuyler Hospital in Uitenhage. For his dedication and unwavering commitment in addressing the rights of workers, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University posthumously presented Phumzile John Gomomo with the Council Prestige Award. Gawe has worked in both the public and private sector over the years and enjoyed an illustrious career peppered with many accomplishments. The manner in which she survived, her inner strength and determination, her lack of bitterness and her serenity and humility captured the attention of South Africa and the world. Alison was awarded the prestige Rotarian Paul Harris Award for ‘Courage Beyond the Norm’ and she was the first recipient of Femina magazine’s ‘Woman of Courage’ award as well as being chosen as Port Elizabeth’s Citizen of the Year. Holiday tips: Safe swimming - respect the sea We find hundreds of thousands of holiday makers flocking to our beautiful South African beaches in summer time. Respect the sea, the currents and the need for caution. .Before entering the sea swimmers should take time to watch the waves and should avoid places where there is a strong backwash, obvious rip currents or a danger of being washed on to rocks. .Check the weather and tides before you leave home - if the seas are too rough then you could get swept away. .Enter only where the waves are straight and gentle. .If you experience a strong current get out of the sea, or remain well within your depth. .It is better to swim when the tide is rising as the sea will tend to wash you ashore and the backwash and rip currents are not so strong. .Check with the lifeguard on surf conditions before swimming. .Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. .If lifeguards give you directions or instructions from the stand, obey them. Look out for warning signs and flags: Red flag means it’s dangerous to swim.
Red and yellow flag means lifeguards are on patrol and you should swim in the area between flags. .Be considerate of other swimmers especially when surfing. .Never swim while intoxicated. Alcohol impairs judgement, unnecessary risks are taken and a swimmer will tire more easily, increasing the chance of an accident. .Avoid swimming immediately after a
big meal, as there is a danger of getting cramps. .Don’t dive into shallow sea – there are many paraplegics who broke their necks diving into shallow pools. .Don’t swim in river mouths, dirty water or when bluebottles are present. .Never swim alone – use the buddy system. .If you are confronted by a large wave and
there is not enough time to get away from it, try to dive underneath the wave. Keep your body as low as possible until the wave passes over you. Timing is important, dive into the base of the wave just before it breaks. Do not dive if the water is too shallow – instead crouch and keep a low body profile. .If caught in rip currents, relax and swim toward the shore at a 45-degree angle until you are free of the current. Do not try to swim ashore against the current – it will only tire you. If the rip currents are strong, swim parallel with the shoreline in the same direction as the littoral current and then swim diagonally toward the shore. If you are not able to swim out of the currents, call or wave for help. .Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not entrust a child’s life to another child; teach children always to ask permission to go near water. .If a child is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability. .Be alert and steer clear of plant and animal life. Jellyfish, stingrays and other marine animals can cause painful stings or allergic reactions. Watch out for denture con man HEILIE COMBRINCK It has come to the attention of a dentist from Uitenhage that a man is going around Uitenhage and Despatch doing illegal repair work on dentures and introducing himself as an employee of Dr Singh. “The only information we have is that the man is called Rasta and that he has a look which suits his name. He goes around from house to house, introducing himself as a staff member of Dr Singh. “He then says that we have send him to check whether there are any people who need denture repair work done,” said Dr Singh, who owns an established dental practice in Uitenhage. “We wish to inform residents of Uitenhage and Despatch that my practice has never instructed anybody to do repair work outside of the practice. All dental work is being done at our lab which is situated at our premises,”
said Dr Singh. He requests people with dentures which need repair work being done not to give it to this person or to give him any money. “He will disappear with the money and the dentures. And because it is an illegal operation it is likely that the police will not be able to help you find this person or your dentures. “This means that you have become a victim of a scam and it is your responsibility to inform the dentist and the police should you be confronted with this person,” said Dr Singh. According to Dr Singh, the con man usually gives different addresses where he is staying. The latest was in Flamingo Flats, Uitenhage. Dr Singh said they don’t know for how long this has been going on and how many people have fallen prey to his scam. “We received a phone call last week from someone wanting confirmation that ‘Rasta’ is working for our practice.

Legendariese man met hart vir stampkarre gegroet ODETTE PARFITT
D
ie legendariese motorsportman Atta Victor is verlede Vrydag op ’n besonderse manier gegroet met ’n begrafnisdiens by die Victory Raceway renbaan. Victor is in die ouderdom van 69 aan ’n hartaanval dood. Sy naam was dekades lank sinoniem met stampkarre. “Stampkarre was sy lewe, en almal op die baan het Atta geken,” vertel Johan van Eck, wat Victor deur hul jarelange deelname aan motorsport geken het. “Atta was altyd die man met die mooiste karre, want hy kon iets in sy kop sien en het geweet hoe om dit te bou en mooi te maak.“ Victor het in die 1980’s uitgetree uit motorsport nadat hy hom as nasionale en provinsiale kampioen gevestig het. Hierna het hy Custom City gestig, waar hy sy talent ingespan het om lykswaens en limousines te bou.
“Atta was die hart van dié plek, ons sal hom onthou vir sy toegewydheid.” Sy dogter, Vicky Gillmer, getuig ook van sy harde werk. “Die dag voor sy dood het my pa nog aan ’n lykswa-projek gewerk,” vertel sy. “Hy was op sy gelukkigste wanneer hy kon kyk hoe renjaers jaag om die baan wat hy voorberei het. “Ons as kinders gaan die stywe drukkies mis, die grappies en ou stories wat hy vertel het – maar ons berus ons dat hy by Jesus is en ons hom weer sal sien.” Victor se begrafnis is deur Brian van Willing, ’n jarelange vriend van die oorledene waargeneem en sy oorskot is vervoer in een van die laaste lykswaens wat Victor se seun, Pieta, gebou het. Victor het die eerste dubbelkajuit bakkies gebou en Nissan het dit by hom oorgekoop in die laat 1990s. Daarna het hy Custom City gestig waar hy

Yolanda Erasmus besit 12 woonwaens en huur die perseel waarop dit staan met goedkeuring van die eienaar om huisvesting te bied aan dié andersins haweloses. “Nou, na 17 jaar wat die woonwaens hier staan, het die owerhede ’n probleem en verwag ek moet die mense kennis gee om te trek. Hoekom?” vra Erasmus ontsteld, want oor die jare hou sy volledig boek van al die verbeteringe om seker te maak haar woonwa-akkommodasie voldoen aan munisipale vereistes. Dennis Koen wat verantwoordelik is vir die instandhouding van die perseel, sê hy kan nie verstaan nie hoekom dié woonwaverbly nou ewe skielik as ‘n probleem beskou word “ Die afgelope 8 jaar is die uitleg nog dieselfde. Die brandweer het ’n paar keer kom inspeksie doen en was tevrede met ons brandblussers en veiligheidsmaatreëls. “ “Lank terug het die munisipaliteit ons beveel om ’n Wendy-huis en hout te verwyder en ons het. Daar was ’n probleem met die kragtoevoer, dit is reggemaak. Wat ook al van ons gevra word om hierdie perseel wettiglik te bestuur, dit doen ons.” Koen hou die betalingstrokies uit om te wys die werk ís gedoen: R7 000 is bestee op ’n kragboks. Kragkabels is ondergronds aangelê na elke woonwa. Gasbottels is verwyder. Kameras is aangebring. “Ek verstaan regtig nie wat nou aangaan nie. As die brandweer ’n brief bring en sê die woonwaens moet 2 meter uit mekaar wees, dan doen ek dit. As ek woonwaens moet uithaal, dan doen ek dit. “Hier is reëls en regulasies. Hier word nie ingebreek of gesteel nie. Ons mense gee nie

Ek het nog nooit gesê ek worry nie wat die wet sê nie. Maar ek sal my hande af-baklei vir my mense. Sit my maar in die tronk ek is lankal genees van claustrophobia,” sê Erasmus. Sy en Koen wys fotos en beeldmateriaal wat gemaak is van die inwoners wat oor die jare daar gebly het. Hulle vertel van die baba wat daar gebore is en hoe Koen die naelstring moes knip. Hulle moes op eie onkoste al menige inwoner ter ruste laat lê en begrafnis hou omdat daar geen familie is nie. So is hulle voertuig ook al baie keer ingespan as ambulans om siekes by die hospitaal te kry. “Ons gee om vir ons mense. Moet nie vir my sê ek bedryf die plek dat dit gevaar vir ons mense inhou nie. Ons doen alles om vir hulle ’n huis te bied. “Ek raak nie ryk uit hierdie mense nie. Maar my hart is ryk, want ons plek is vir vrede en liefde,” sê Erasmus.

A fire has destroyed the Relay Emergency Medical Services office in Cuyler Street, Uitenhage, but thanks to Cuyler Hospital and Udipa, they have now moved to a brand new premises. According to Richard Moodie, Relay EMS operational manager, the fire started on Tuesday, November 29th at approximately 02:40. “We do not know what caused the fire, but it is being investigated. Our damage is roughly estimated at about R160 000 and it includes our computer equipment as well as other emergency equipment,” said Moodie.

wning a home is a dream-come-true for many young people, but being a first-time buyer wrapped up in finding just the right property could mean that the thought of what it will cost to run and maintain that property
hasn’t crossed your mind. “While transitioning from renting to ownership is likely to give you the additional space you want, it will also give you a bigger property to manage and maintain, and you
need to make provision for that so that you can enjoy your new home without being stressed about making ends meet every month” says says Gerhard Kotzé, MD of the ncy group group. RealNet estate agency “So before you g start thinking about what new furniture, appliances or even curtains you might need, you should try to establish what additional monthly costs you will face as a new homeowner.” For example, he says, you should budget for a higher municipal bill, because electricity and water usage is likely to be higher than in your rented home and as a property owner, you will also now be liable to pay property rates. “If your new home is in a secure complex or an estate, you will also need to budget for the monthly levy or home owner’s association fee – and bear in mind that this will increase annually. “Alternatively, if you are moving from a complex to a suburban property, you may need to budget for things that were previously taken care of by the body corporate – such as security, garden upkeep, and even pool
maintenance.” In addition, says Kotzé, while you may previously have paid to insure your belongings, you will now also have to budget for home owner s insurance (sometimes (som owner’s also called brick-and-mortar insurance) to ensure that if your home is damaged or destroyed in any kind of disaster, it can be repaired or rebuilt and you will not end up paying a bond on a property that no longer exists. “And then you may also want to take out bond insurance, which is a kind of life insurance that will pay off your bond if you die and ensure that your family is not at risk of losing their home.” Other costs you need to anticipate, he suggests, include an amount for basic home maintenance and small improvements, especially if you are a DIY enthusiast. “On top of that, it’s a really good idea to put a reasonable amount into a specific home savings account every month and build up a ‘reserve fund’ to cover emergency repairs that can otherwise leave a big hole in your budget, or to help pay for any major renovation or addition you want to make at a later stage.” (Issued by RealNet)

Atta Victor memorial race The Atta Victor Memorial Race will be held on 26th & 27th December at the Victory Raceway. Victor, the promoter of Victory Raceway passed away on December 2nd after suffering a heart attack. Victory Raceway would like to honour his legacy in hosting a memorial race in rememberance of this motorsport legend.
Drivers from Bloemfontein will join the local racing fraternity. Gates open at 15:00 and racing starts 18:00. The competing classes include: Development, 1660s, 2.1 Modifieds, Super Six and American Saloons. Braai facilities are available as well as foodstalls. Young swimmers tackle ocean series swim <Swimmers Leya Bosman and Jonathan Swartz from the Dolphin Triathlon Club participated in the ocean series. Despite the tough and difficult sea and weather conditions they succeeded in the 400m surf swim.

One of the cars on the show, will be the 1934 Ford V8 Roadster, in Street Rod format – owned by Marius Greeff. A Free State visit resulted in a 10 year project to rebuild the car, assisted by a few friends and understanding/supportive family.

New title-holder for tough beach run The Dolphin Challenge was last weekend completed by over 60 intrepid adventurers. The 36 km pristine beach route from Jeffreys Bay to Port Elizabeth in wet, windy conditions tested participants who ran (by themselves or in relay teams), and those who rode in the mountain bike event. Previous 3-time winner, Jorg Brand, was dethroned by the conditions and the new race record holder, Mzukisi Klaas, who took 15 minutes off the previous best time to win in 3 hours and 6 minutes. Klaas was well clear of second placed Colben Ngcube. The first woman home was Amore Strauss of Charlo Athletic Club.The mountain bike event, although sparsely attended, was enjoyed by those who did attend. A photo finish between Ed Bennett and Bennie Heynike was enjoyed by the small crowd of beach goers who braved the weather. (-Heilie Combrinck)
