“
Parents question the construction of, as rumour has it, a gambling house close to the school. This site surely had to be rezoned and council had to approve it. How is it that councillors can not provide us with answers?” This is the view of Nico Heath, principal of Albertyn Primary School. A meeting was scheduled for last Friday by Ward Councillor Tyrone Adams with Mondé Vaaltyn, a facilitator, Heath, and the developer. Only Heath came to the meeting. Five years ago, a developing company Elatiprox Pty. Ltd. through its spokesperson Darell Willemse announced the development of an approximately 30 000m² East Cape Mall next to Union Avenue. It initially sounded promising, but nothing came of it. At the beginning of the new year, earth moving equipment started working at the site. “We all know of the initial plan of a shopping mall, which never happened, but whatever is being built now will have an impact on the immediate surroundings, its community and the school,” said Heath. Councillor Pieter Terblanche said “from what I’ve heard it is the first phase of the construction of an approximately 1 000 m² gambling house.” Vaaltyn did not want to reveal the identity

Our biggest concern is traffic. Otherwise the uncertainty, as we do not know what to expect and what the impact of the development might be.” In the meantime, an advertisement for a branch manager of a Galaxy Bingo and Entertainment branch in Uitenhage appeared in a local newspaper. According to an employee at a Galaxy Bingo branch in Port Elizabeth, Charlton Kemridge, the Galaxy Bingo manager in Port Elizabeth is certainly involved in the development of the gambling house in Uitenhage. Kemridge was not available for comment. Mthubanzi Mniki, municipal spokesperson, did not comment on the enquiries regarding the development.

ie belowende rugbyspeler van Uitenhage wat Saterdag ná ’n wedstryd inmekaargesak en gesterf het, was ’n man van min woorde en ’n breë glimlag. Ricardo Kiewiets (26) van Gardens-rugbyklub is na die wedstryd saam met ’n vriend huis toe waar hy inmekaargesak het. “Die ambulans het hom kom haal, maar hy was glo by sy aankoms by die hospitaal reeds dood. Dit was ’n geweldige skok,” sê Ronnie Korkee, president van Gardens Rugbyklub. Kiewiets het hom in 2014 by die klub aangesluit en was ’n veelsydige speler. “Hy was ewe goed as vleuel en heelagter.
Hy het voorheen vir Alexandria gespeel, maar toe ons span in 2014 sy vermoëns op die veld sien, het ons hom oortuig om by ons aan te sluit.” Vir dié skuif het hy by sy suster op Despatch gaan woon. “Ons is vier kinders wat in dié gebied bly, en Ricardo is ’n voogkind wat sedert die ouderdom van twee maande in ons huis grootgeword het,” sê Wendell Lindoor, wat Ricardo sal onthou as ’n man met ’n groot liefde vir rugby. “Sy grootste droom was om vir die Oostelike Provinsie rugby te speel. Soggens wanneer die meeste pensioenarisse nog met hul eerste koppie koffie die koerant oopvou, stap dr. Louis van der Walt (84) en sy hond, Brussow, die strate in Uitenhage plat en stroop elke stukkie harde plastiek wat in sy pad lê. “My oë is al so ingestel, my visie versprei oor die hele pad en fokus dadelik wanneer daar ’n plastiekdoppie is,” sê Van der Walt. Maar die optel van ander se gemors is nie net om dié tuindorp skoon te hou nie. Die plastiekversameling word aan die Carpe DiemVLV-tak in Uitenhage geskenk, wat die dop-
pies aan ’n plastiekherwinningsfabriek skenk om plastiekmeubels en planke uit die herwinde plastiek te maak. Die fabriek skenk weer op sy beurt geld aan ’n plaaslike stigting wat gemolesteerde en mishandelde vroue help. “Dié fabriek skenk namens die VLV R1 per 2 literbottel vol doppies aan die stigting,” sê Marietjie van der Walt, voorsitter van die Carpe Diem VLV-tak. “Die optel van plastiekdoppies het eintlik nou onlangs in ’n kompetisie tussen ander VLV-takke van die Sirkel Middelland ontaard,” sê sy. Maar Van der Walt steur hom nie veel aan die kompetisie nie, aangesien hy glo hy die voorloper is. “Ek stap vier keer ’n week, minstens vier kilometer. Die geheim is dat ek drie verskil-
lende roetes het. “En hoewel ek doppies vir die VLV wil optel, frustreer dit my om te sien hoe maklik mense rommel in die strate kan neergooi.” Van der Walt sê hy tel tussen 30 en 40 doppies ’n dag op. “Die meeste wat ek al op ’n dag opgetel het, was 103 doppies, dan staan my sweetpak se sakke omtrent gepof. “Maar omdat ons nou in ’n kompetisie is, sal ek dalk ’n ou drasakkie oor Brussow se rug moet span sodat hy kan help dra,” skerts Van der Walt. ;Dr. Louis van der Walt (84) en sy hond, Brussow, spog met die plastiekdoppies wat hulle oor die afgelope twee weke opgetel het. Then there was a standing ovation which was rhythmically followed by a drum roll and sentimental tears from longserving staff members who had witnessed Kieran Stear’s career path. As of February 1st, 2017, she has headed-up Riebeek College Girls’ High School, a school rich in history, with a vision of adapting constantly to a changing world while retaining the character and ethos of a school that prides itself on being a happy place where potential is reached. “I believe in the power of common sense, values based decision-making and thorough communication with the parents and stakeholders of the school,” said Kieran Stear in her acceptance speech at a special assembly. She made it clear that she was passionate about running a steady ship with good communication with the parents and a focus on academic programmes that allow each learner to reach her full potential. “I know our girls are the best. I want each one of you to feel safe and to know that you can reach your full potential in our happy school. Riebeek has a very special and unique spirit. “I am honoured to be the custodian of the girls of Riebeek, having seen most come through the gates of the school for the first time in Grade 4,” said Stear.
Having taught at Riebeek from 1996 - with a break for being a mom and learning the ropes of the business world, to the present Stear has 20 years of involvement in the school with her two eldest daughters having been Riebeek girls too. She does not sweat the small stuff and believes that challenges are opportunities to dig deep and reach your full potential. “Riebeek’s staff are a friendly and capable group who are very close to my heart. I cherish the opportunity to lead such a talented, devoted group. I hope to give them the space to grow, the recognition they deserve and the development opportunities they need. “I am also grateful to our school governing body whose service to the school and sound judgement are valuable contributors to the success of Riebeek College,” said Stear. She holds a Bachelor of Science and post graduate teaching diploma from the University of Natal. She also is proficient in various accounting programmes, labour relations and labour law, financial statements and sound business practices. ewly appointed Riebeek College principal Mrs Kieran Stear accepted the mantle of heading the school in its 140th year. She is the 15th principal of the school. Her mother in law, well known and respected former educator, Mrs Natalie Stear, was the 12th principal (1988-2000). “I am so proud of Kieran, she has done exceptionally well. What really thrilled me at the announcement ceremony of her being the new principal, was to see how absolutely popular she is,” said Natalie Stear. “When they made the announcement the whole school went wild, gave a standing ovation, called and beat their feet on the floor. “I am quite sure she is going to do a fine job. She is an extremely capable person. She never panics and that is what I find so amazing about her,” said Natalie Stear. During 1996 when Natalie Stear was principal, Kieran applied for the position of HOD: Life Sciences and got it. At that stage the principal’s son, Robert, did some relief teaching at Riebeek. “The two met and it was love at first sight. And they eventually were happily married for 16 years before my son passed away owing to cancer of the lung,” said Natalie Stear. When Robert and Kieran’s children were still very young, she requested to teach in the
junior school to find out how they were being taught. “She is remarkably experienced in the junior side of Riebeek as well as of course, the high school,” said Natalie Stear. When asked what advice and words of wisdom she would bestow upon the new principal, Natalie Stear said, “Look, every day is different with its own challenges. But first of all you have to be a fine example. “Then you have to ensure that there is sound discipline at school, tempered with mercy. You can’t have discipline without mercy. “And then there comes a time when you have to look at a child and give him or her a second chance.” Strong advice from her is also to listen carefully. In her office at the time she was principal at Riebeek, she had a plaque with the Latin expression Audi Alteram Partem, which means “hear the other side”. She said Kieran Stear is a marvellous mother, was a loving wife and a remarkable woman. I could not have asked for a better daughter-in-law. I think of her as the daughter I never had, I only had sons. “She was the best thing ever that happened to my son and he adored her.” (-Heilie Combrinck)

Route director tackles rugged trail with Amarok Life has become much easier for PwC Great Zuurberg Trek route director Rob Hayter after Tavcor Commercial Vehicles sponsored a branded double cab Amarok in support of this mountain biking classic. Taking place in the mountainous Zuurberg region in Addo, from May 26 to 28, the route will cover nearly 200km over three days. The trails spanned a wide variety of terrain, often in remote areas, which you could only reach in a 4x4 vehicle capable of handling the rugged conditions. “Now I can get to anywhere in the Addo Elephant National Park, as well as the many isolated areas we have to access. It is much easier to travel to the areas where we have to clean and clear the track,” said Hayter. He said the whole route had to be marked with signs and arrows, often traversing rough conditions, and the Amarok had made it much easier to complete the work required.

Dié duifies gaan later vanjaar aan ’n 600km wedvlug deelneem met prysgeld vir die skenker sowel as die koper. Duifies word môre vanaf 17:00 ontvang en besigtiging is van 18:00 af. Om 19:30 begin die veiling met Twakkies du Toit as die afslaer. Klub trots op unie-kampioene Despatch Posduifklub het ’n ryke geskiedenis en is in 1951 gestig. Naas die dorp se rugbyklub is dit een van die oudste sportklubs op Despatch. Die klub het in die verlede verskeie uniekampioene opgelewer, waarvan Boertjie Nell die bekendste is. Volgens Le Roux neem die inskrywings jaarliks toe en is daar tans sowat 350 duiwe in die hok. “Die klub verwag hierdie jaar ’n rekord aantal inskrywings van ongeveer 500 duiwe.” Verlede jaar se wenduif is deur Danie Hattingh van Welkom ingeskryf. Inskrywings sluit vanjaar op 28 Februarie, maar laat inskrywings sal tot einde Maart aanvaar word. Inaugural Roof de Karoo mountain bike traverse What better way to explore the remoteness of the Karoo than from your mountain bike? That’s exactly what awaits participants of the inaugural two-day Roof de Karoo Mountain Bike Traverse, happening on 24 and 25 March. What’s more is that the start and end of the event takes place in national parks – starting at a picnic site in the Mountain Zebra National Park (MZNP) outside Cradock and ending the following day at the historic Winterhoek homestead at Camdeboo National Park (CNP), which surrounds the town of Graaff-Reinet. This is but one of the unique aspect of the traverse - riding through sections of two national parks, including a big game park like MZNP, which is not otherwise permitted. The 175km route traverses parts of the 268 000 hectares of the newly proclaimed Mountain Zebra-Camdeboo Protected Environment (MZCPE), established to protect the biodiversity of the land which lies between the two South African National Parks (SANParks) locations. The race’s name, the Roof de Karoo, stems from the fact that participants will be riding mostly along the roof (mountains) of the Karoo, from where, on a clear day, one can see into the distance for miles. Chairperson of the MZCPE’s Landowners Association and avid mountain biker, Ed Kingwill, says, “Participating teams of two will depart from the MZNP camp site early on the Friday morning in the crisp Karoo air and end under the shadow of the imposing 2 430m high Nardou mountain peak. “After 85 kilometres and an elevation gain of 1 260m, the cyclists will be able to relax under the shade of the poplar trees and cool off in the stream at the source of the Great Fish River.” Day 2 starts with a climb and descent over
Nardou on an old ox-wagon track. Cyclists are rewarded with a downhill gradient crisscrossing the Sundays River through private game farms, finishing at the Winterhoek homestead about 90km later in view of the Valley of Desolation. No fewer than 20 different properties will be crossed over the two days. The purpose of the traverse is multi-fold: to celebrate the first anniversary of the declaration of the protected environment and to open up the area to those who may otherwise never get the opportunity so they may enjoy its uniqueness and remoteness and create jobs in
the form of trail maintenance and in the tourism sector. Only 50 team slots are available. A team entry fee of R4 200 includes 3 nights of tented accommodation and all meals, water and feeding stations along the route.
