Opportunity for charities to raise funds at festival Wings & Wheels, one of the major annual events in Uitenhage, is desperately seeking charities, non-profit organisations or just good causes which would like to raise funds for themselves at the festival. The organisers of the event have agreed to invite organisations to run their own fund-raising stalls or sideshows at the event for the minimal “pitch fee” of R100. “The event draws thousands of visitors

and is taking place at Uitenhage Aerodrome on Friday 31st March and Saturday 1st April,” said Clive Hassell, spokesperson of the Wings & Wheels and Doug Davidson Memorial Air Show. “There are certain provisos as to what they may run. We hope they can come up with something that will be attractive to kids. “If, however, they are at a loss as to what

to do, we have put together a list and description of lots of different competitions and games which attract kids and adults alike, most of which are a totally new concept to the Uitenhage public, but they are all very well tried and tested, and can be very good earners, without the need for you to invest very much to set them up. “Although we won’t let charities raffle them, as a ‘big prize’ on a competition we

Metro takes firm stand against dumping NCEBA DLADLA

ELSON Mandela Bay Municipality will at the end of this month sit in a meeting to finalise a R15 million budget to address the problem of illegal dumping.

This was revealed by Deputy Executive Mayor Mongameli Bobani who is also a Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Health. In the meantime, a no-nonsense approach will be taken against those who make themselves guilty of dumping illegally. The services of the metro police has been called upon and they have been instructed to fine perpetrators and even carry out arrests. According to Councillor Bobani, illegal dumping has been a thorny issue that has been giving council sleepless nights. While they were doing everything in their power to ensure that the environment was kept clean, residents in local communities continued to dump illegally. “ We were forced to close the transfer site in Algoa Park because of compliance issues. It didn’t meet the standards,” Bobani said. Explaining, the Deputy Mayor said while

this site was closed, residents were told to use spaces temporarily earmarked for dumping or make use of the other stations available. “But, culprits continued to use the Algoa Park station illegally. We urged residents to stop this, but they wouldn’t listen. We clean it today and find it used tomorrow,” said Bobani, adding that metro officials were also busy engaging communities and educating them about the importance of keeping the environment clean. Dumping in residential areas According to municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki, the metro is also in the process of recruiting more town rangers. On a question about the absence of ‘no dumping’ noticeboards in certain areas known as dumping hotspots in residential areas, Mniki said, “Noticeboards are erected, but in some instances, they are removed and or stolen on the same day.” He added, “Currently there is an effort to clean up all illegal dumping areas. However, at some, which have been cleaned, illegal dumping occurred again. This indicates that if the community does not work with the municipality to eliminate illegal dumping, it will be difficult to succeed.”

Clampdown on businesses breaking by-laws REPORTER

usinesses that have been transgressing municipal by-laws, operating illegally and ignoring their zoning permits are now feeling the heat. This is due to a joint operation between the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Traffic, Waste Management Law Enforcement Unit, Fire and Emergency Services, Department of Environmental Health, Land Use Management, Metro Police and South African Police Service. On February 17, the joint forces intensified their operations at Commercial Road and Davies Street. For the past years, the area has been characterised by lawlessness on the road, shops blocking the walk ways by displaying their products outside their doorstep, businesses not adhering to their zoning permits, shops selling perishable products not adhering to hygiene guidelines and illegally operating

businesses, among others. This operation is focusing on problematic areas like Korsten, Commercial Road, Davies Street and other areas. Notices of non-compliance and traffic fines were also issued. A number of businesses were also instructed to remove their products from the walk ways. Two weeks ago, the operation was in Durban Road in Korsten where a number of illegally operating businesses were closed and traffic fines issued, mostly to taxi operators, some of whom did not even have a driver’s licence. Fundraiser hike at Sacramento Trail The Groom a Girl initiative will be hosting a hike/walk fundraiser on March 26 as part of their quest to assist girls from Erica Place of Safety and Inn Safe Hands. They are inviting the public to dust off their running shoes and join them. The Groom a Girl initiative is made up of a group of young women who aim to assist young girls who are less fortunate. “We would like to assist them with extra classes, especially English, as well as help them learn new skills. We would also like to give them basic computer lessons as many of them have never worked on a computer before,” said Nakita de Souza, a member of Groom a Girl.

Since the beginning of the year, they have been collecting the stationery necessary to present the workshop to the girls. The funds raised at the hiking event will go toward purchasing a laptop or two to assist the girls with research and to give them basic computer training. The hike will take place on March 26 at the Sacramento Hiking Trail in Sardinia Bay at 10:00. Picnic baskets are welcome. There will be lucky draws, face painting and jumping castles to keep the kids entertained. Singing competiton at market Bikers’ family fun day in aid of cancer trust

Singing has been a significant feature of human behaviour throughout time. With so much undiscovered local talent, organisers of the Uitenhage Market have decided to host a Junior Singing Contest. “Oumas, oupas, parents and friends are all welcome to come and support the local talent on stage as they compete to wow the panel of judges as well as the crowd,” said Lilly de Jongh from the Uitenhage Market. The age category for participation is 8 to 15 years old. Although there will be three judges, all from the music industry, the public’s response will play a role in choosing the winner.

The prize packages will include various gift cards and packages from local vendors, restaurants and clothing stores. “Contestants will also be able to perform at one of the local radio stations and be interviewed on air. “The plan is for the winner to return next year to again perform at the junior singing competition,” said De Jongh. Lone Reapers Motorcycle Club, in conjunction with Innibos Lapa, will once again host their 2017 Family Fun Day in aid of Little Fighters Cancer Trust. The event will be held on Saturday, 4th March at the lapa. There will be a variety of food stalls, gift stalls, hand crafted items and fun activities for the kids. “Early cancer detection in children is paramount in fighting this disease and as we have sadly discovered, it proliferates these days with little ones whose families do everything to help their child who faces such a challenge at such a young age,” said Sher van Staden, president of the Lone Reapers Motorcycle

Club. “We can’t change the world, but we can help these children.” Music will be provided by Mr Country and a few local singers will be performing live with Gerrit de Jager as the master of ceremonies. will come into effect on May 1 next year. Speaking after a two-day workshop hosted by national body Agri South Africa this week (ed: Feb 14-15), Agri EC president Doug Stern said his organisation had a number of “serious concerns” regarding the potential effects of the new R20 hourly wage on the agricultural sector, including potential unemployment. “As farmers, we want to create sustainable employment in our sector, which is already struggling due to the ongoing drought conditions in the Eastern Cape. Many farmers will be unable to absorb the costs of two wage increases, to get to the prescribed amount, in 2018 alone.” Stern said the agricultural industry, under the auspices of Business Unity South Africa, had been an indirect party to the national minimum wage agreement signed at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) in early February. Only Cosatu did not sign the agreement between business, labour and national government. “We did manage to secure a number of concessions, which I feel is quite a breakthrough,” said Stern. “Our representatives successfully negotiated a phasing-in period for farmers, which will see them paying 90% of the agreed minimum wage for a period of two years. Agriculture has also been acknowledged as a fragile sector, which means that we will be allowed to present research demonstrating the negative impact of wage increases on our sector ahead of any proposed adjustments down the line.” Until the signing of a proposed minimum wage act, which should be drafted for public comment by June next year, Stern said the agricultural sector would remain subject to Sectoral Determination 13, which sets the minimum wage for farm and forestry workers.

“On March 1 this year, the minimum wage will be adjusted upwards by inflation plus 1%. This equates to an 8% increase, which has been the norm for a number of years.” Based on an average 45-hour workweek, this translates to an hourly rate of R15.39 or R3 001 per month. “In March next year, we anticipate another increase of approximately 8%. That takes us to R16.62 an hour or R3 241 per month.” Stern said the difficulty would arise with a further 8% increase, to R18 an hour or R3 500 per month, just two months later in May. “This will be the 90% payment of the R20 hourly rate, in line with the Nedlac agreement.” The good news was that there were currently no planned increases for 2019 and 2020. “We essentially have a full year to revise our businesses. If we can’t absorb this in 2018, then we’ll have to look at alternatives.” While the majority of Agri EC members were stock farmers, employing limited numbers of workers, Stern said the local citrus industry would be more seriously affected by the increases, as it relied heavily on both permanent and seasonal labour. He said struggling farmers had only three options – to apply for a renewable 12-month exemption from the Department of Labour, or retrench or dismiss unproductive workers. “Agriculture is the biggest employer of unskilled labour in the country. “Unfortunately, we are not rewarded with increased productivity with every wage hike, so we will be engaging with the State on the issue of skills development, which can only benefit all South Africans in terms of food security.” Stern said the increase in the wage bill would not be passed on to consumers. “As primary producers, we are price takers and not price makers. We absorb all additional increases in costs and cannot pass them on to the consumer.” (-Reporter)

Race day in honour of famous biker The first Regional Race Day for 2017, to be held at the Aldo Scribante Circuit on Saturday, has been titled the Gavin Ramsay Memorial Race Day. This is in honour of veteran motorcycle racer, Gavin Ramsay, who passed away last month. Ramsay a keen competitor in most classes from 50cc upwards, was awarded his Springbok colours for motorcycle racing in 1986. He was well loved and respected in South African motorcycle racing circles. “Our riders at the Aldo Scribante Circuit had the privilege of sharing the track with him last year, as part of the historic motorcycle racing series. He was an instant favourite amongst the locals,” said Lucille Elliott from PE Classic Bike Racing. During the lunch break there will be a honour lap to commemorate Ramsay.
