1. Assemble all pieces needed for this process. NB. A set-in sleeve is joined to the garment by a seam that circles the arm.

5. Starting at the shoulder notch, pin the cenre of the sleeve head to the shoulder notch, matching raw edges on the yoke.

2. Lay the sleeve next to the correct armhole.

6. Arrange the sleeve armhole under the machine foot, so the sleeve is on top.

3. Starting at the underarm, pin the sleeve seam to the side seam. 4. From the inside pull the sleeve through to the wrong side of the shirt. Š Karen Ferry and Rosemary White

7. Starting at the underarm, sew the sleeve into place with a 1cm seam.

8. Match the notches on the sleeve with the notches on the armhole. Continue up towards the sleeve head. 9. Ease any fullness between the front and back notches on the sleeve and armhole. 10. Continue matching notches and raw edges.

11. Finish at the underarm. Make sure you backtack to secure the seam. 12. Turn through to the right side to reveal the sleeve head. The sleeve head should be pucker free and smooth. 13. To finish the armhole, overlock the seam edge together.

14. Starting at the underarm, position the armhole edge under the overlocking foot, with the sleeve underneath. 15. Overlock the edges of the seam together. 16. Ensure you check the armhole fabric is laying flat underneath.

17. Take great care not to catch any of the sleeve into the overlocked edge. 18. Continue sewing for 1cm past the underarm seam. 19. Run off the seam to create a chain. Cut the chain with scissors and pull threads to secure. 20. Finished shirt sleeve.
