PROCESS CONSTRUCTING A SLANTED POCKET

1. Assemble all pieces needed for this process. NB. This process is demonstrated on a pair of shorts, however, the same process can be used on both trousers and skirts. 2. Fold over, and press the long, straight edges of the back and front pocket facings, 3. Lay the back facing on top of the back pocket bag. Align along the curved edge.

4. Edgestitch the facing onto the pocket bag. Backtack at the start and end of the seam to secure the threads. 5. Repeat process to the front pocket bag and facing. 6. Lay the front pocket bag on top of the back pocket bag aligning the waistband and side seam edges. Starting from the pocket opening notch in the side seam, sew the pocket bag to the front with a 1cm seam.

7. At the notch, unfold the seam allowance so it lays flat to the garment.

11. Machine baste the pocket bag to the garment along the waistline and down the side seam.

8. With the rest of the seam folded towards the pocket bag, understitch the facing.

12. Stitch the pocket bags together with a 1cm seam allowance. Backtack at the start and end of the seam to secure the threads.

9. Press. 10. Align the back pocket bag with the front, match pocket notches. Use pins to secure the layers.

13. Overlock the pocket bags to neaten.

14. Overlock the side seam between the pocket opening notch and the hem.

Make sure your first stitch starts where the last stitch ended. Sew with a 1cm seam allowance.

15. Lightly press.

18. Open the lower section of the sideseam. Overlock the length of the side seam keeping the previously overlocked edge folded out of the way.

16. Lay the front onto the back and sew the side seam with a 1cm seam allowance. Finish stitching at the pocket opening notch. Backtack to secure the threads. 17. Lift the pocket bag out of the way and continue stitching down the rest of the side seam. Š Karen Ferry and Rosemary White

19. Press. Use a tailors ham for the curved hip area. 20 Finished side pocket.
