Rebuilding Together Lewiston-Auburn
May 5th, 2012 It’s been 10 years since a student at Bates College started the Lewiston/Auburn chapter of Rebuilding Together — a national non-profit organization established by his mother in D.C. — created to assist those in need of help in maintaining their homes. And in the last 10 years, thanks to the undying dedication of the Rebuilding Together L/A (RTLA) board members, local businesses and caring individuals, more than 50 homes have been renovated for area residents who otherwise would not have been able to make the repairs themselves. From painting, to building steps, to repairing roofs, to installing water heaters – whatever it takes that the volunteers are qualified to do and donations allow, it’s done. We’re carrying on the organization's mission by helping homeowners stay in their homes, providing labor and materials to repair the homes of those who cannot afford to do so themselves.

Terrence Dickson, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, who was leaving a house he had just burglarized by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count 'em, EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowner's insurance company claiming undue mental anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish.

My wife and I, both graduate students, recently celebrated the arrival of our first child. Can You Hear Me Now? During the seventeenth century in India, King Muhammad Adil Shah had an enormous monument, the Gol Gumbaz, built in Bijapur, Karnataka. Crowning the monument was a gigantic, 178-foot-thick dome, completely unsupported by pillars. Today, tourists can climb the spiral stone staircase and stand near one of four black stones in the structure, then whisper into one of the stones to a companion standing near another black stone on the opposite side of the dome. They will able to hear what was said. This phenomenon is attributed to the unusual acoustic properties of the monument.

On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. In 1956, Red Auerbach, of the Boston Celtics, knew that the future success of his team depended on a six-foot nine center for the San Francisco Dons named Bill Russell. The problem was that the Celtics had the third pick in the draft, and the Rochester Royals had the second pick, and Red knew that Ben Kerner, owner of the Royals wanted Russell as much as he did. Walter Brown, owner of the Celtics, also owned the Ice Follies which was shortly scheduled to go on tour. The Ice Follies was extremely popular and made a lot of money for the people lucky enough to book them for their cities. They were not scheduled to go to Rochester. Red went to Walter Brown and said. "I have an idea how we can get Russell. What if we offer Kerner two nights of the Ice Follies if he will swap draft picks with us?" Walter Brown liked the idea and told Red to try it. Kerner jumped at the deal because he knew he would make a ton of money from the Ice Follies. So that’s how the Celtics got Russell. The invention and development of the telegraph in the 1840s made possible the swift collection of information from widespread weather stations, and thus enabled the first weather maps to be drawn. The term "spaghetti Western" originated during the 1960's. Moviemakers made low-budget films in Italy because it was cheaper to do so there than in the United States. Upon completion of a movie, English was dubbed in for the Italian actors. Struggling actor Clint Eastwood had left Hollywood for a few years and made his early Westerns in Italy with director Sergio Leone, to whom the term "spaghetti Western" is attributed. The collaboration of Eastwood and Leone included the hit film The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966). The right arm and torch of the Statue of Liberty crossed the Atlantic Ocean three times. It first crossed for display at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and in New York, where money was raised for the foundation and pedestal. Colorful "International Orange" is the official name of the orange-red paint used to paint the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and it has always been that color. Jimmie Foxx, the great hall-of-fame baseball player, married a girl from Auburn, Maine. Her name was Dorothy Anderson. Her father was a partner in the Anderson and Briggs Drug Store which was located at the corner of Court and Main streets. Jimmie Foxx died at the age of fifty-nine while having dinner with his brother. He choked on a piece of steak.
