SOCIETY FOR YOU

The Struggles of Cinema in Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia has many local hidden talents from film makers, producers and actors, but how can they exercise or show up their own talents in a country that does not have cinema showrooms? And do we actually have a cinema industry ? And what is the future of it? What film makers say about it?

Yacob Al Marzoog, a Saudi film maker, says "a movie industry does not need a cinema house. Cinema does exist in Saudi. Movie makers may or may benefit from movie theaters." He also adds, "Movie production could be a creative endeavor or a commercial thing but it also can be both''. He also mentioned some of the main struggles our industry is facing which is script writing or the scenario. Technical struggles like filming tools were in the past. These technologies are easy to find these days. People can produce a film by a mobile device. Yacob proclaimed "I've seen good films using a mobile phone. What we lack is good script writers and scenarists".

Another film maker, director Faisal Al Harbi, added by saying " in the past we didn't have entertainment authority but now we have it. Nonetheless, entertainment did exist. " He also declared that there is short films industry, but then again, not profitable. Al Harbi continued to this debate, ''But we still don't have real cinema to begin with to have a struggle if struggle would be lack of cinematic quality.'' He added, "We just had a youthful energy since 2000 and they are the ones struggling in and out of the country. Yet, there were some short films that were able to reach an international level. ''

Someone Tweeted It will be the best cinema story of having movies without cinemas.

YOU! Asked Do YOU follow trends of the pop culture? YOU! Newsletter asked people on social media and others about whether or not they follow trends made by the pop culture.

T

he pop culture is the modern popular culture transmitted via mass media and aimed at the young generation, and because of social media, trends can be spread very quickly among people. YOU! Newsletter conducted a survey to see how many people follow or not follow trends of the pop culture nowadays.

Yes 7% Almost Yes 3%

No 20%

It Depends 70% 30 people were surveyed and a vast majority of them follow trends that only fits them personally, and that accounted for 70% of respondents. That means most people judge trends' suitability rather than just following blindly. A second group of respondents don't see any importance in following trends at all, which are only 20% of them, whereas around 7% of people who think that trends are necessary in their lives.

And they tend to follow every trend happening out there. The last group of respondents and the lowest which are only 3.3% who actually tries to keep up with trends of the pop culture as much as they can. To sum up, there is no right or wrong answer, however the best bet would be to look for the suitability of the trend before following it as it may not really fit you and you end up looking terrible.

You have to be respectful of pop culture, because people interpret it in the way they want. - Jaleel White
