WCCF Announces Creation of Fund For The African American Community In Washington County

The Washington County Community Foundation is commemorating Black History Month by announcing the creation of a new perpetual grant making fund targeted to the African American community in Washington County.

Initiated in 2022, the African American Community Fund seeks to promote and support the African American community in Washington County in five focus areas: culture, community development, education and enrich-ment, history and preservation, and entrepreneurship. The WCCF Board of Trustees approved the Fund as the Foundation’s newest pooled, special-interest fund. This designation will result in ongoing efforts by the Foundation to actively seek contributions to grow the Fund through current and planned gifts. “We are very grateful to the founding donors of the African American Community Fund for their generosity and their vision to craft a comprehensive charitable purpose for the fund, which will serve to celebrate and uplift African Americans in Washington County in perpetuity,” remarked WCCF President & CEO Betsie Trew. “And we are grateful to other donors who made leadership gifts to the Fund so that it could begin issuing grants in 2023. Our hope is that others will follow the lead of these donors and make contributions to the Fund to increase its grantmaking impact.”

Contributions to the African American Community Fund can be made via the Foundation’s website at www.wccf.net or by contacting the Foundation at 724-222-6330.

The first round of grants from the Fund will be awarded in the second quarter of this year. Nonprofit organizations who would like to be considered for a grant should submit a request via the Foundation’s grants management portal. Requests may range from $1,000 to $5,000. A primary goal of the Fund is to empower community members to think creatively to design or sustain programs and projects for the African American community. However, grants will only be issued to nonprofit organizations so interested community members are required to apply for a grant through an established nonprofit organization.

The Foundation manages about 200 component funds that support a variety of charitable purposes to improve the quality of life in Washington County. Grants are provided to public charities, public school districts and other educational institutions, fire departments, municipalities, etc.

COVER STORY:

Officer Sean Sluganski Honored Throughout South Hills/ Mon Valley Communities

A community hero was remembered Feb. 14 by family, friends, fellow civil servants and complete strangers. Officer Sean Sluganski, a North Baldwin native and McKeesport police officer, was laid to rest that day. At 32 years old, he was gone way too soon.

Officer Sluganski was shot and died heroically while responding to a domestic dispute call on Feb. 6 in McKeesport.

A week later, thousands of police officers from western Pennsylvania and around the country descended upon the South Hills to pay their respects for Sluganski’s life of service. Community members from Baldwin, Brentwood, West Mifflin, McKeesport, Pleasant Hills, Jefferson Hills and other South Hills/Mon Valley communities lined a miles-long procession route to also offer their thoughts and prayers and show respect for police officers and first responders.

Sluganski, known affectionately as ‘Slug’, was a beloved son, brother, fiancé, father, friend and partner. He is survived by mother, Terri, sisters, Sarah and Shela, fiancé, Chelsea and

daughter, Haven. He was preceded in death by his father, David.

His funeral Mass was held at St. Albert the Great Church of Blessed Trinity Parish in Baldwin. Mass was celebrated by bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, David Zubik, along with the Rev. Stephen Kresak, pastor of Blessed Trinity, and a host of other priests from the area.

“The sudden, tragic and seemingly senseless way that Sean has left this world is so sad and it is so heavy. But today we know that Sean is with the Lord in a place that he has prepared for him in heaven,” Kresak said.

Kresak said Sluganski was described by friends as a “tough on the exterior but gentle, caring and loving on the interior kind of guy.”

His partner, Officer Charles Thomas Jr., was also shot in the domestic dispute on Feb. 6. He survived but is still shaken by the incident. “I couldn’t have had a better

partner and he'll forever be my hero,” Thomas said at the funeral.

Officer Frank Durante of McKeesport also spoke at the funeral. He helped train Sluganski as a rookie cop several years ago. He became a part of the Durante family as they grew closer over the years.

“I miss you, I love you, and you'll always be my best friend,” Durante

said. “I would give anything in the world just to hear you tell my son you love him one more time.”

Sluganski was a hero to many, especially his own family members.

“When I was with my brother nothing was too big or scary enough. He grew up the man of the house always protecting my sister and mom,” said older sister, Shela. “You were my hero long before you were a cop.”

His fiancé, Chelsea Cancilla, remains strong despite her world turning upside down over the past couple weeks. "He left this world doing exactly what he loved and believed in so much. He left a hero not only to us but to everyone he met," Cancilla said. "He brought the brightest light to every dark corner of my life, and gave me everything I could have ever wanted in our family and our daughter.”

Officer Sluganski was a graduate of Baldwin High School and studied law enforcement at the Allegheny County Fire and Police Academy.

QPR Training Offered at Outreach Teen & Family Services

Suicide is one of the most complex of human behaviors. It is also one of the most difficult things for people to talk about yet teachers, coaches and school administrators, police officers, librarians, priests and many others may find themselves in a situation in which it is necessary to do so. It is in fact these “front-line” personnel that may make all the difference preventing suicide just by listening and questioning. QPR training teaches you how.

Research suggests that the survival rate of individuals experiencing a heart attack is higher in places where the general public have training in CPR (QPR Institute, 2016). That is, those who witness someone having a potentially life threatening heart attack can help save that person’s life if they have been trained in CPR. It is no accident that QPR sounds similar to CPR. The founder of the QPR Institute, Dr. Paul Quinnett, conceived of the acronym as a way to draw attention to a life-saving strategy for those contemplating suicide or those who are stressed to their limit. QPR stands for Q: Question, P: Persuade, R: Refer. The idea is, if we intervene in a mental health crisis, just like we use CPR in a physical crisis, we can save lives! Importantly, QPR is not a form of treatment or a replacement for mental health counseling. Instead, it is a strategy a gatekeeper can use to help save a life. According to QPR teaching, a gatekeeper is a person who may be in a position to identify possible warning signs that someone may be considering suicide.

You may, like so many others, be concerned that talking about suicide to someone may in fact cause a person to think about or consider it. This is a common myth that is simply not true. We cannot make someone think about suicide. QPR instructors like to say, “A person is either thinking about suicide, or they are not” (QPR Institute, 2016). Trained gatekeepers of the QPR method can make all the difference by allowing for time and creating a space for someone to talk about what they are feeling and experiencing without concern of judgement.

Monessen Public Library will host nationally known cryptozoologist Stan Gordon on Saturday March 18 at 11:00 AM. Stan Gordon began investigating reports of Bigfoot sightings in Pennsylvania in the late 1960’s. Since then he has interviewed hundreds of witnesses who claim to have encountered these strange hairy creatures.

Sightings of Bigfoot continue to take place yearly in Pennsylvania and across the country, but why have no bodies ever been found? You will hear about some of the strangest cases ever documented about Bigfoot. Could Bigfoot be something other than an undiscovered animal species? Incidents involving Bigfoot & UFOs seen together, trails of Bigfoot tracks that suddenly abruptly stop with no explanation. And possible government interest in these incidents, are just some of the startling details you will learn about in this illustrated lecture. You will also hear about the latest Bigfoot and UFO encounters around the area that have taken place the last couple of years. The general public is welcome.

We offer QPR training through Outreach Teen & Family Services by a Certified QPR Instructor. Outreach is a community counseling agency offering services to young people (children, teens and emerging adults). We provide training to numerous institutions and organizations including schools, universities, libraries, and community centers. The training provides you with the language and tools you may need to help someone in distress and works to break down the barriers people often encounter when talking about suicide.

‘Soles for Songs’ 5K Set for April 1

Carpathian Cookery Cookbooks Available

According to Jennie Nolan, the South Hills Children's Choir experienced a "little freak snowstorm" when it held a 5K fundraiser in March last year, but that hasn't deterred them from doing it again. "We did run; people turned out and had a lot of fun, and we were surprised that we were still able to have a race."

Nolan is the founder and artistic director of the choir, which comprises youngsters 8 to 18 from the South Hills and Mon Valley areas. This year's 5K, Soles for Songs, is set for April 1 at Panhandle Trail in Collier Township, and Nolan said, "It's flat, it's easy, and it's very pretty; there's a beautiful rock quarry and gorge right there. The money we raise will help support the different things we're trying to do with our program, including supporting some students with disabilities." This year one of the students is vision impaired so the choir acquired music in Braille.

In addition, because wanting her kids to have a broad understanding of music is important to Nolan, she said she "always finds a way to invite local musicians who are professionals to come and play with us" – whether a local flute teacher, a percussion and violin duo from West Virginia, or a local banjo player. During the pandemic, Stacey Gibbs, a composer from the Detroit area, worked via Zoom with the choir on one of his pieces, Walk Together Children, and that piece is going to be included in the choir's 10th anniversary concert.

"We're always trying to find ways to broaden our kids' horizons. I want them to see there's so many opportunities out there, and if they love to sing they can find ways to make music or pick up an instrument and learn."

The choir is planning a 10th Anniversary Celebration Concert May 6, at 5:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Upper St. Clair. Nolan said musicians who have played with the choir are invited to attend, along with alumni, who will join the choir and sing at the end. "We're planning a big birthday bash. (Gibbs) composes spirituals and gospel music, and his Walk Together Children is a fun, lively spiritual. The kids are really excited about it, so we're hoping to have a good turnout of alumni to join us."

The cost to register for the 5K is $30 until March 15, $40 after March 15. To register, visit shcchoir.org/events.html. For questions or to volunteer, send an email to solesdirector@gmail.com.

The Carpathian Cookery cookbook, has entered its 21st printing and is now available for sale. Having sold over 20,000 copies, this cookbook was requested by the Library of Congress to be in their ethnic cooking collection. The 330-page cookbook has a new look and features a protective plastic cover. The book includes sections on Christmas and Easter customs and recipes, traditional Rusyn and Slavic foods, other ethnic dishes, and many other tried-andtrue recipes of St. John’s parishioners. There is a variety of paska bread and kolachi (filled roll) recipes, as well as meatless dishes and Lenten recipes, suitable for the Great Fast, as well as the Pre-Christmas Fast. The cost of the cookbook is $14 plus $4 postage and handling ($19). If ordering from Canada, please send a $36 ($14 plus $22 postage) U.S. Postal money order payable in U.S. dollars to reflect the difference in the exchange rate and postage cost.

To order please send a check or money order to: Ethnic Craft Club, St. John Byzantine Catholic Church, 201 E. Main Street, Uniontown, PA 15401, or call (724) 438-1382 (M-F 9AM-3PM–Leave message) for more information. You may also contact us at: carpathiancookery@gmail.com.

South Hills Peripheral Neuropathy Sufferers Now Have Hope

Tri State Neuropathy Centers, one of the largest neuropathy treatment practices in the USA has opened a Castle Shannon office, located at 3757 Library Road.

Over 30 million Americans suffer from neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms of painful cramping, burning and tingling, difficulty walking, numbness, and even interruption of sleep. Neuropathy has a devasting effect on normal activities that most people take for granted and enjoy. Some of the most common causes of neuropathy are related to diabetes, medications, chemotherapy, and back issues.

“Peripheral neuropathy is a chronic and progressive disease”, said Dr. Michael Renk of Tri State Neuropathy Centers. “Left untreated, peripheral neuropathy will only get worse. It is best to treat it early”. Since 2013, the eight regional Tri State Neuropathy Centers have steadily grown and successfully treated over 10,000 patients with an advanced technology protocol that addresses the causes of neuropathy rather than the symptoms. The program is non-evasive, painless, drug-free, and is FDA-approved.

50 Years Ago – Ringgold Hoops Ruled the WPIAL

The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame would like to recognize the 50 year anniversary of the 1972-73 WPIAL champion Ringgold boy’s basketball team. The socks were high, the shorts were short, and the hairstyles were groovy – but with a 29-2 record, this team was a force to be reckoned with. (And YES – that’s a young Joe Montana in the front row wearing #12).

Clairton’s Iyanna Wade Reaches 1,000 Points –And is Just A Sophomore!

Just a sophomore, Clairton girls basketball player Iyanna Wade has already made a name for herself. The skilled shooter and strong ballhandler reached 1,000 points for her career in early February. That mark came as she has played in just 36 games at the varsity level.

She reached 1,000 on Feb. 6 against Greensburg Central Catholic, one of the top teams in Westmoreland County. Wade tallied 35 points in the game, which included draining six 3pointers.

Wade averages around 35 points per game and had a career-high 50 points in a single game this season, coming in a 70-32 victory over Steel Valley.

She stands at just 5 foot, 3 inches but plays much bigger than her size. She isn’t scared to drive the line and fights for all rebounds, loose balls and tipped passes.

According to WPIAL Today, Wade “makes everything look easy on the court. She has an excellent shooting stroke and great handles. She will stop and pop from anywhere. She can dribble drive and finish at the rim. She can also facilitate and play some defense.”

Wade averaged 25 points as a freshman and has accelerated her career this season. Twice this year she has gained notoriety across the state and the nation. In January, she was named SBLive’s National Girls High School Basketball Player of the Week from Jan. 2-8. And for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4, she was named Pennsylvania’s Girls High School Basketball Player of the Week. The sky is the limit for one of the top players in the class of 2025.

The PHMS team finished eighth nationally out of 48 squads in the Small Junior High competition. The squad performed in the preliminaries and advanced to the semifinals; the Jaguars were among just 10 teams that

A third squad from West Jefferson Hills SD, the TJ Large Varsity Game Day team, advanced through the preliminary round to the semifinals, but came up just 0.6 points of advancing to the finals.

“We are beyond proud of the athletes, their preparation and determination at Nationals,” said Kim Stadelman, who coaches the TJ and PHMS Cheer teams. “It was an exciting and successful competition and we’re thrilled for the students that all their hard work delivered such fun and rewarding results.”

5 Tips for Organizing Your Home Office

(Family Features) While big projects like windows are hard to overlook, don’t forget smaller areas that need attention, too, such as your home office. Getting organized can help you tackle home management tasks more efficiently. Making the office a priority can reduce frustration when it comes to spending additional time in your office while working from home.

These five tips can help get you started:

1. Make sure you have furniture that can adequately store your stuff, including plenty of space for files, reference books and computer equipment. Pieces need not be costly to be functional and there are plenty of attractive options available online and at both small and major retailers.

2. Arrange the space with its intended use and your own work style in mind. For example, if you don’t need ample space to spread out over a large, flat work area, eliminate that space – it’s simply an invitation for clutter.

3. Place items you rely on frequent(Continued on following page.)

ly, such as a calculator or ruler, within arm’s reach so they can easily be put away between uses. Capture these items in containers and bins to keep the space looking neat and free of clutter.

4. Establish a filing system that lets you keep track of important papers you need to keep and have a shredder handy to help you discard any sensitive documents. Whether you alphabetize, color code or use some other method, group paperwork into segments for categories such as bills, banking, health care, auto, insurance and so on for easy access in the future.

5. Tangled cords can make even the most organized spaces look messy, and they may pose a fire or tripping hazard. Get control of your cords by storing devices you don’t use regularly and securing the remaining cords with twist ties or clips. Remember to use a surge-protected power strip to minimize the chance of damage should a power surge occur.

3 Things Every Homeowner Should Do At The Start Of Spring

(BPT) - "Many homeowners perform spring cleaning tasks to freshen up and declutter their homes, but it's also crucial to tackle important maintenance tasks," said Viviane Essex, merchant at The Home Depot. Don't know where to start? The Home Depot's Home Services has provided a helpful spring maintenance checklist. Here are three items you can check off your to-do list to make sure your home's internal systems and external features run smoothly.

1. Schedule seasonal maintenance on your HVAC system

Your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system is crucial to keeping your home cozy in the winter and cool during the summer. Most systems have a lifetime of 10 to 20 years, and efficiency can drastically decrease as your equipment gets older. If your HVAC system is working harder and not performing as well as it should, it may be time to replace it. Book a consultation with a certified professional who can inspect your existing system, make recommendations and give you an estimate for a new system.

2. Maintain, repair or replace your water heater

Make sure to check "inspecting your water heater" off your spring cleaning list. Keep an eye out for any water buildup around your water

heater, water-quality issues or small plastic pieces from your fixtures that can affect your water supply. Also, look out for changes in water temperature or temperature duration, a broken pilot light, noise in your unit or pipes, or the smell of gas around your water heater. If you notice any of these signs, your water heater may be failing.

3. Spruce up the outside of your home

Your windows are an especially visible part of your home that need careful attention. During winter, you may feel drafts or frequently see condensation on your windows. As the seasons change, you may notice cracking or peeling around window exteriors. These are signs that it may be time to replace your windows.

This spring, book a window replacement. Windows should be inspected by a licensed professional every 20-25 years to see if they need to be replaced. No matter what windows you choose, a new high-quality window with thick, insulated glass is more energy efficient than older single-pane windows.

Another external item to inspect this spring is your garage door. You may not think your garage door needs regular maintenance, but just like a car, it needs regular tune-ups. Small issues can quickly turn expensive down the line. Also, some garage door problems can pose a safety hazard and cause serious injury. Depending on the age and condition of your garage door, it may be time to replace it. Replacing your garage door can improve the look of your home and increase its market value.

Finally, consider installing a new fence around your property. Fences provide privacy and security. They can help keep children and pets safe inside your yard, while also keeping out unwanted animals and trespassers.

For all your indoor and outdoor spring-cleaning projects, you can find help at The Home Depot's Home Services. All certified service providers are local, licensed, insured and background checked. To learn more and book appointments, visit HomeDepot.com/Services.

Want Your Hardwood Floors to Last For Generations? Use These Expert Tips

"Hardwood floors are special, and if properly taken care of, you can have a living, organic, premium floor that lasts for generations," said Jen Meska, director of Merchandising for LL Flooring (formerly Lumber Liquidators).

Tools, tips, and tricks

Meska says to start with the fundamental tools for caring for hardwood flooring: a dust mop for everyday cleaning, a vacuum for weekly cleaning, and a microfiber mop that can get damp (not wet!) for monthly, deep cleaning.

To keep day-to-day dirt and grit off your floors, aim to sweep or vacuum weekly. When using a vacuum for regular cleanings, opt for a soft floor attachment or hardwood setting that disengages the beater bar (this is the bar that rotates when cleaning carpet.) By disengaging it on hardwood and avoiding a vacuum or attachment with hard bristles, you can avoid any scuffing or scratching of your floors.

If you have heavy furniture placed directly on your hardwood, be sure to use felt pads on the feet to avoid scratches, and replace them regularly.

Strive to do a deep clean monthly to ensure you pick up the dirt and grime that inevitably forms over time. A great hardwood flooring care set is LL Flooring's Bellawood Floor Care Maintenance Kit, which comes with a bottle of floor cleaner, a mop head and handle, washable wet mop microfiber pad, dry mop pad and a variety pack of felt pads.

This set is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, which means it's third-party tested for low chemical emissions and therefore safe to use at home. It's also urethane-safe and won't leave a dullstreaky residue on your floors, so they'll look refreshed when you're done cleaning.

What to avoid

Relative to most other flooring materials, solid hardwood is sensitive to moisture, whether that be due to wet shoes or just changes in humidity. Therefore, it's important to keep any amount of standing water off the planks. That means ditch the traditional mop and bucket, which can leave behind water that could cause your floors to swell, crack or splinter.

Another critical thing to avoid is harsh cleaning solutions which include ingredients like chlorine bleach, ammonia, pine oil or undiluted vinegar.

By following these simple steps, your hardwood floor should stay in good shape for many years to come.

"The best thing about hardwood flooring is that it's a sustainable, living, organic material that takes on its own unique character throughout its lifetime," said Meska. "Each plank is unique and tells its own story, and with the proper care, they can serve as the design foundation of your home for generations."

A New Era for Kidney Dialysis at Penn Highlands Mon Valley

Penn Highlands Mon Valley has introduced a new technology for inpatient kidney dialysis. The Outset Tablo is the first-of-its-kind technology and the most technically advanced system for dialysis. The fully automated system serves as a dialysis clinic on wheels by conveniently providing dialysis to patients anywhere at any time –across the continuum of care. While kidney dialysis is provided to inpatients on the Medical/Surgical Unit, the compact, portable machine is easily transportable so that patients can have dialysis in the Emergency Department, ICU, PCU and if a patient is isolated.

“This is a significant advancement that transforms the dialysis experience for patients,” said Heather Franci, Chief Nursing Officer and Service Line Director, Heart Center, Lung Center, Brain & Spine and Oncology Services at

Penn Highlands Healthcare. “This system reduces complexity of dialysis and leaves patients feeling refreshed and energized.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 15% of US adults or

37 million people are estimated to have chronic kidney disease (CKD). When people develop CKD, their kidneys become damaged and over time may not clean the blood as well as healthy kidneys. If kidneys do not work well, toxic waste and extra fluid accumulate in the body and may lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and early death. Dialysis is a treatment that removes the wastes and extra fluid from the blood. On average, people who have dialysis receive three treatments per week with treatments lasting three to four hours each time.

OPHTHALMOLOGY

Q: When do I need cataract surgery? What are my options if I do?

A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescription of your glasses changes frequently, with diminishing improvements with each change.

Ophthalmologists recommend a comprehensive eye exam to have your visual acuity measured and your eyes (pupils) dilated. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.

The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.

Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.

There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to

reduce your need for glasses for distance vision or near vision or both.

An ophthalmologist will meet with you for a cataract evaluation, with the intention of learning your individual visual needs, answering all of your questions, and guiding you toward the most appropriate option for which you may qualify. In addition to the options mentioned, an ophthalmologist can also offer “drop-less” cataract surgery if you have difficulty instilling eye drops. Typically, regardless of which surgical option is chosen, the surgery takes minutes, you leave without a stitch or patch, and the improvement is life changing.

A corneal sub-specialist, such as myself, can also perform a number of treatments concurrently with your cataract surgery if you have other co-existing eye diseases. An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.

He subsequently completed a fellowship at Shiley Eye Center, UC San Diego Health. Dr. Wang practices with Glaucoma-Cataract Consultants, Inc.

READER ADVISORY:

Reader Advisory: the National Trade Association we belong to has purchased the following classifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer “employment” but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it’s illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in US dollars. 800 numbers may or may not reach Canada.
