All best wishes, DR SAM GROGAN Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Experience

Studying in Greater Manchester you’ll be at the centre of innovation, education, industry and culture and you’ll be in a part of the country whose economic potential and scope for growth exceeds that of any other UK city region outside London*. This means that Salford is not only a great place to study, but also to live, work and for future prospects. At Salford you’ll experience the best of both worlds, you’ll be only 20 minutes’ walk away from the buzz of Manchester city centre, with shops, bars, restaurants, and nightlife, and at the same time you’ll get a real sense of community from living and studying on a campus university. Salford as a city is undergoing a significant amount of change through a large amount of investment, and we’re right at the heart of that journey with the Crescent Masterplan, an £800 million investment plan designed to transform Salford over the coming years. We’ve also invested heavily in our own campus facilities, for example the new £65 million Science and Engineering building, Energy House 2.0, a new, world-leading research centre in energy efficient housing design, as well as being the home to the new North of England Robotics Innovation Centre.

SALFORD AND PROUD

THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT MAKE SALFORD UNIQUE, but our location is one of the things that really sets us apart. Salford is part of Greater Manchester; a thriving, diverse cityregion in the north-west of England and home to some of the most open and friendly people you’ll meet. There’s an entrepreneurial spirit here - we’ve got big ideas and we make them happen. But we also know how to have fun – with some of the greatest sports, culture and music scenes in the world, Salford and Manchester are home to anyone who loves to work hard and play hard. Our main campus is just 2km from Manchester city centre, and our MediaCity campus shares a skyline with the BBC and ITV. Everything you need for an outstanding university experience. Happski & Company is a Manchester-based design and consulting firm which specialises in helping tech businesses with their next round of funding. I joined the company at an early stage, before the company even had a website or any online presence. During the summer internship, I was working directly with the CEO and had a significant impact on the overall success of what the company is today. With the skills already acquired through my Salford experience, I was able to shape the company’s culture, business fundamentals and had a massive effect on the overall look of the marketing strategy.

During my internship, I have definitely learnt time management and project management skills and I’ve had many highlights, including being able to manage key deliverables such as the launch of the website and bringing to life social media channels. Azeem represented the University of Salford in 2020 at Santander’s first ever Santander Emerging Entrepreneurs event, competing with 82 other start-ups for grant funding on their Santander Universities business programme. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Azeem successfully launched Learn with ESS and has actively been engaging with schools to teach children and young people about disability within sports.”

Azeem Amir, BSc Business Management with Sport, and MSc Digital Business

Learn with ESS is an initiative that uses education, sport and speaking (ESS) based activities to provide a unique and interactive team building experience whilst addressing stigmatised issues surrounding disability.

For any students that have a brilliant business idea but are unsure of the next steps, or for those thinking of going freelance, we can help turn ideas into reality and provide support through all the vital steps of setting up in business. We can provide you with free hot-desking office space in the heart of Peel Park campus, where you will have access to a networking lounge to grab a coffee and make those all important business connections.

Learn with ESS aims to change and reshape perceptions within society towards a more unified and inclusive future for all.

At the University of Salford, no ambition is too big. If you’ve got a business idea of your own, our Launch team can help bring it to life through funding awards and business start-up support, and we’ve recently launched a new business incubation centre on campus to help.

Azeem Amir, from Rochdale, has been blind since birth; he has no sight in his right eye but light perception in his left, and he admits his opportunities were limited growing up. That hasn’t stopped him though, with Azeem following his passions to play football from a grassroots level to becoming a member of the England squad, all in just a few years. While studying on his degree BSc Business Management with Sport, he took part in the Launch programme with his business Learn with ESS.

START UP YOUR BUSINESS

Our European Exchange programme is for you if you are interested in studying or potentially pursuing a work contract or traineeship within Europe. We have many fantastic partner institutions all over Europe, as well as many industry links. If you have the option to undertake a work placement as part of your degree, you may be able to do this through the European Exchange programme. Please be aware, European study and work opportunities are subject to change. We will take part in the Erasmus+ programme until May 2023. However, a new mobility programme, the Turing Scheme, came into force in September 2021 and will provide funding for study and work placements in the EU and further afield. Funding is obtained on an annual basis. For more details visit turing-scheme-informationsalford.ac.uk/international-opportunities/

We continue to work closely with European partners for study and work opportunities in the EU. We encourage all students to take part in international opportunities where possible, either via study and/ or work opportunities or internationalisation at home activities.

These opportunities are often either partially or fully funded and offer you the chance to gain valuable work experience that will make your CV very attractive to your future employers.

OPPORTUNITIESSHORTEXCHANGETERM

If you want to venture further than Europe for a study exchange, our International Exchange programme is for you. With partners in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, South Korea and the USA, you have the incredible opportunity to visit some fantastic places, while taking advantage of the great facilities our partner institutions offer.

INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES / 57 OPPORTUNITIES INTERNATIONAL

It is hoped that the new Turing Scheme should provide funding for International Exchange programmes longer term. When you join Salford, you can come and discuss your options with the International Opportunities team.

For both the European and International Exchange programmes, money needn’t be a barrier if you are considering going abroad. You continue to pay your usual tuition fees to the University, and you are still entitled to your student finance.

In addition to the International and European Exchange programmes, we regularly promote short term opportunities via third parties. In the past, our students have taken part in research projects or internships organised by, for example, the British Council and the Canadian MITACS programme (mitacs.ca/en/programs/globalink).

Studying and working overseas are fantastic opportunities for you to develop yourself both personally and professionally, while making new friends from across the globe and acquiring skills that are attractive to potential employers. Visit salford.ac.uk/international-opportunities/ourpartnerships for information on our current partners.

Lili Brewin It’s an interesting talking point for job interviews, as employers like to see that you’ve done something out of your comfort zone.

LILI BREWIN, TELEVISION AND RADIO PRODUCTION STUDENT, tells us all about her experience studying abroad as part of her course at Salford.

MEET LILI

Being exposed to a completely new education system enabled me to gain a lot more confidence. Living in another country for four months, away from the comforts of home, made me more confident and improved my communication and interpersonal skills. I have also gained a lot of friends whom I will have for life, not only from America but all over the world (including Japan, Taiwan, South Africa, and Venezuela). Meeting these people also gave me a better understanding of different cultures and lifestyles around the world. Any student who is considering studying or working abroad should do their own research on the university best suited to their studies, ask questions to students who have gone through the process themselves, and make the most of the support provided at the home university as well as the host. I learned so much from the lecturers, students and the university campus as a whole in America and it’s an interesting talking point for job interviews, as employers like to see that you’ve done something out of your comfort zone and studied in another surrounding for a while.”

The new T-Level qualifications have been introduced from September 2020, with the first students offering T-levels applying to university in the autumn 2022. We welcome the development of the T-level qualifications as a new technical route into Higher Education. COURSES HAVE INDIVIDUAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND SOME REQUIRE

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 70 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS UCAS TARIFF

CHANGES TO QUALIFICATIONS

Most courses also require a minimum of grade 4 in GCSE English and maths, (or grade C for qualifications taken prior to 2017), or a grade C in both subjects where GCSEs are taken in Northern Ireland or Wales, however some may require a grade 5. We operate a flexible admissions policy and treat everyone as an individual. This means that we will take into consideration your educational achievements and predicted grades (where applicable) together with your application as a whole, including work experience and potential to succeed in your chosen course.

We are happy to accept both reformed and unreformed A levels and AS level qualifications and we do not differentiate between grades obtained in these qualifications. We also acknowledge that students in England will be assessed on a linear basis, whilst those in Wales and Northern Ireland will continue to be assessed on a modular basis. Where you are taking a combination of A and AS levels we will continue to accommodate these on an individual basis and the University will not disadvantage those who have not had the opportunity to take AS levels. We are also aware that more students are now taking combinations of qualifications especially A levels and BTEC awards, and we welcome this.

SPECIFIC SUBJECTS. Visit the full course information on our website to find out if this applies to the course you’re interested in. Our minimum entry requirement for a degree course is two A levels or equivalent, but some courses will require three A levels. If your chosen course is in science or engineering, please check our website to see whether A levels in physics, chemistry and biology, where science practical assessments are taken, are a requirement for entry.

76 OTHER STUDY OPTIONS

To ensure you have the maximum chance of success whilst studying at a partner college, we provide a dedicated programme of support throughout the year. This includes talks by University academic staff to students at partner colleges and organised visits to the University campus to attend events relevant to your programme of study, such as guest lectures and masterclasses. As a partner college student, you will also register as a student here at Salford too and therefore have access to certain University facilities and resources whilst you study (dependent on the partner arrangement).

STUDYFOUNDATION YEARS

STUDY OPTIONS AS WELL AS THREE-YEAR DEGREES, WE ALSO OFFER A WIDE RANGE OF OTHER STUDY OPTIONS.

We believe that higher education should be within reach for all those who are passionate about learning and achieving their career goals. If you’ve got the drive and commitment to study, but don’t quite have the qualifications needed to start an honours degree, a foundation year course could be for you.

salford.ac.uk/partner-collegesPARTNERCOLLEGE

Our range of foundation courses can help to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to progress onto one of our undergraduate degrees. They’ll introduce you to key concepts and ideas, and provide you with basic knowledge of approaches, concepts, theories and principles. The foundation level places strong emphasis on the development of relevant study/transferable skills and a responsible approach to learning through a set of compulsory core modules. These are ideal if you want to develop your career but don’t meet the entry requirements for direct entry to an honours degree or have the appropriate background knowledge. They are also suited to you if you are returning to education or if you wish to change career direction. You can see which of our degrees offer a foundation year in the course listings at the back of this booklet. You can also look at our course listings online for the latest information at salford.ac.uk

This range of courses includes degrees and foundation degrees. Some of the degree programmes provide the opportunity of studying the first year at a local college before progressing to the University to complete your degree. Other degree programmes are taught at the partner as a top-up to your foundation degree.

Courses at our partner colleges currently include the areas of business, arts, sport and psychology.

More information about our partner colleges and the programmes we run is available at

As part of our commitment to giving more people access to higher education, we work with further education colleges in the north-west to offer a wide range of courses where you can study locally with the option of progressing to the University of Salford to complete or continue your studies.

“I was absolutely over the moon to be accepted onto the programme. When I realised this huge construction company only took a handful of apprentices every year, I knew I had to work hard and I was so pleased when they put their faith in me and offered me a place.

80 STUDENT STORY

MEET NATHAN

The company invests a lot in us over the five-year training programme, putting us to work on different projects in different departments to get a feel for the variety of specialisms open to us, and they really help us with our university course too, so getting a place felt like a real privilege. I’ve had the opportunity to work on the Municipal Buildings, a £40 million heritage refurbishment project in Liverpool to transform a Grade II* listed building into a four-star hotel with a spa. I’ve also completed engineering placements on projects in Manchester city centre, getting involved with the final stages of the 158-bedroom Premier Inn on Princess Street, and working on the 33-storey £85 million Oxygen Towers residential development in Ancoats. I knew the route I wanted to take, I wanted to do my degree but I also wanted to work and gain some experience. The apprentice route really gives you that extra step up, so in five years when I finish my apprenticeship I’ll not only have a degree but also five years’ worth of experience, which should stand me in good stead. I believe this will help me to progress within the industry, and I will have had a great time doing it.”

ABOUT 81

PEOPLE’S LIVES BY SUPPORTING THOSE AT RISK OF HOMELESSNESS.

MEET MIKE Find out more about our BSc (Hons) Social Policy course

undergraduate/social-policysalford.ac.uk/courses/STUDENTSTORY

I remember the thumping of my heart knowing I had been accepted and just feeling proud to have even been given the chance. Looking back, I was very low on self-confidence and had no faith in my abilities, all I had was hope and an ambition to give back to society. That ambition was why I chose to study BSc Social Policy at the University of Salford. The course covers such a wide range of topics, a few of my favourites were Precarity and Insecure Lives, Ideologies and Housing. The housing module really engaged me – after analysing homelessness and the policies around it I decided to focus my dissertation on the topic. I genuinely loved every minute studying on the course. The lectures were lively, inclusive and thought-provoking. I had ups and downs but the journey you go on is life-changing, the process certainly made me a better person. You’re not alone on this journey either, the lecturers are possibly the most passionate and caring people I have met. I would honestly say that the only reason I managed to get a First-Class Honours degree was because every time I needed support, reassurance or just a one to one sit down they were there for me. This brought the best out of me. Now I can safely say I know exactly what my abilities are and have faith in them. The course is designed in a way to improve your social skills, ability to debate with an open-mind and write in a way that is essential for breaking down complex information and highlighting key points. All of this has been essential in my life as a graduate.

Graduating was my proudest moment and not because I had a degree but because I felt like I had the ability make a real difference.

“Being the first in my family to go to University, I was anxious about even starting on a degree course, but I knew deep down I had to at least give it a go!

Three weeks after graduating I found a job in the area that most interested me - I now work in homeless prevention as a housing specialist. My role allows me to go out and find people at risk of homelessness, identify their issues and then design a plan to prevent this. I work with social workers, mental health nurses, housing associations and private landlords. I connect the dots, negotiate and work out solutions to problems. There are no two days the same, and I get to use everything I have learnt during the course to give back and benefit those who need it most. I manage my own caseloads and also oversee staff while advising them on actions to take. This is a privilege I have gained from taking what I thought was a ‘risk’ and going to study Social Policy. The ‘risk’ paid off, I get to fight for people’s rights and help them stay off the streets while also pushing for policy change to ensure the future is brighter for everyone in our society and no individual is left without shelter. If you’re considering making a real difference this course will provide you with the tools you need, go for it!”
