LILA DOWNS Lila Downs es cantante y compositora, de padre estadounidenses y madre mexicana, que se ha caracterizado por resaltar en su estilo musical sus raíces mexicanas y a los pueblos indígenas como el mixteco, zapoteco, maya y náhuatl. Es en Oaxaca donde inicia su carrera como cantante en diferentes clubes, después de un largo camino, las historias de mexicanos que cruzan la frontera ilegalmente a los Estados Unidos, la inspira a escribir y realizar su primer álbum discográfico llamado La Sandunga en el año de 1994. Logra ganarse una posición entre el público latino de los Estados Unidos con su participación a lado de Los Cadetes de Yodoyuxi (un grupo de percusión) y La Trova Serrana, quienes interpretan temas de los Zapotecas. Participa en la banda sonora de la película Frida con el tema llamado “Burn it blue”, que es nominado en la 75 edición de los Premios Óscar. En el año 2004 ganó el Grammy Latino por su álbum Una sangre. Lila Downs is a singer and composer. Her father is American and her mother is Mexican. She is well known for tapping into native Mesoamerican music of the Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya and Nahuatl cultures. She began her singing career in different clubs of Oaxaca. After a long road, the stories of Mexican people illegally crossing the frontier to the United Stares, inspire her to write her first album “La Sandunga” in the year of 1994. She earns a position among the Latin audience in the USA with her performance with “Los Cadetes de Yodoyuxi” (a percussion band), and “La Trova Serrana” who play music of the Zapotec.
