“I wasn’t expecting to be so happy in the UK away from my family, but it’s this city that made me love student life. Chester feels really welcoming, which makes the transition into living independently as a student a lot smoother. One of my favourite things to do is have a walk along the River Dee with some ice cream and watch the sunset. If you’re visiting Chester, you should definitely check out Chester Zoo!”
Arty Bioveterinary Science“The University of Chester is great at offering opportunities to further develop your skill set and enhance your employability. They are also unique in offering most undergraduate students the option to choose the Work Based Learning placement in their second year. Not to mention their amazing study abroad opportunities and chances to volunteer in the community!”

“There are a few things that make Chester a bit different. An emphasis on a holistic student experience is key – our students are here to get an education, yes; but there’s so much more than that. The opportunities at Chester provide a personalised offer – ensuring every individual gets what they want to get out of life at university. Providing a warm welcome for our students and supporting their wellbeing is crucial, which is why we focus on providing wide-ranging student support and on creating a community that promotes respect, encourages individuality and empowers our students to get the most out of their time with us.”
Dr Helen Galbraith Pro Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience)“My experience at Chester has been exciting because I got to meet a lot of people who are interested in my culture. Everyone is really open to knowing more about everyone from all around the place. They’re excited to talk to you about your food, your culture; they’re excited to try it out as well. To me, Chester is peaceful, exciting and joyful.”
At the University of Chester, we deliver a large proportion of our courses at our sites in Chester, as well as also offering courses at our University Centres in Warrington, Shrewsbury and Birkenhead.

“For me, the main concern about moving to university was potentially feeling uncomfortable in my accommodation and struggling to settle into such a new environment. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn’t take me long to feel at home, both the room and the city itself felt like the perfect fit for me. As well as that, safety was (and still is) an essential element for me, and the Accommodation team have always proven to have that as one of their priorities. Whether it be only being able to access the building with your key card, or the Security team always on site, I can sleep at night knowing that I’m secure. Though, the comfy bed does help!”
Phoebe Creative Writing and JournalismIf you’re considering living at home and commuting to university, Chester has plenty of options and don’t worry, you’ll still be able to access all of the extras that make being a University of Chester student so good. Lots of students choose to commute for all sorts of reasons: to save money, to be near family, to keep a part-time job or simply because they like their home comforts.
Chester has high-quality public transport links within the city itself, and the region beyond, making it really easy to commute. Chester train and bus stations are a 15-minute walk away from our Exton Park learning site, Shrewsbury has a train and bus station nearby, and Warrington has two train stations and a bus station, all within walking distance of the Centre.
We are able to offer a small number of parking permits to those students who meet the specified criteria; students with disabilities and those who have the furthest to travel are prioritised. As we’re trying to reduce our environmental impact on the historic city centre and the local community, students living in University accommodation are not allowed to bring a car to site.
For many students, the concern around commuting is that they won’t be able to meet people or make friends. Please be reassured that this is the main concern for the vast majority of students – commuting and residential – so you are not alone. Because of this, our student induction process starts even before you arrive, with social media groups to help you find your course mates and those you might share common interests with, virtual events and meetings with your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) to help you settle in.
An excellent way to integrate at university and meet people is through a club or society. The Freshers’ Fair is a great opportunity to browse what is on offer, and to sign up to things that interest you. Societies can often be the basis of lifelong
friendships, leadership opportunities or just a great way to spend time communally doing something you love. It’s important to seize those opportunities as you never know where they might lead.
Our personalised learning ethos means that we want to get to know you as an individual to help you develop and grow. Your Personal Academic Tutor will help with that, but it’s good to know that the network of experts in Student Services are also on hand to offer support as and when it is needed.
Here at Chester, you’ll find cafés, bars, restaurants, common rooms and outdoor spaces designed for students to use when they are not working, as well as our libraries, which are often a social hub, too. Come for your lecture and stay all day.
• Give yourself plenty of time to arrive and recharge before a session starts.
• Use your commuting time on the train to get work done or prepare for teaching sessions.
• Don’t leave straight away after your lessons, make an effort to stay for a while.
For commuting students, we also offer overnight self-catered accommodation at £30 per night*, so you don’t miss a course night out, or can enjoy a weekend on-site or in the city with friends.
* Price is for 2022/23 and is subject to change. Please note that overnight accommodation is subject to availability.
No matter who you are, where you come from, the challenges you face or the dreams you have, there’s a place for you at the University of Chester.
Our 14,000+ students each make this University what it is in their own wonderful way – and there’s room for you, too.
We make every effort to create an inclusive and safe space, so our members can study, work and live somewhere they can be themselves, at an institution that promotes tolerance and respect.
We have an active LGBTQ+ society within the Chester Students’ Union, and our annual Diversity Festival has welcomed key influencers and activists from the LGBTQ+ community as speakers to raise awareness of the discrimination and challenges that LGBTQ+ people still face, and how people can become better allies.
The University has also received the Navajo Merseyside and Cheshire LGBTIQA Charter Mark; one of only two universities in the region to receive this, by demonstrating good practice, commitment and knowledge of the specific needs, issues and barriers facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. We are heavily involved with Chester Pride, acting as a direct sponsor, participating in the parade, providing use of University land for the event and hosting a stall, and we are also currently in talks to get involved with the newly formed Warrington Pride.
“There are some wonderful safe spaces here, as well as having our own society putting on weekly events for students.”

At the University of Chester, every individual has value, and we’re committed to providing a working, learning, teaching and research environment that celebrates our differences.
In 2020, the Race Equality Challenge Group was born; in which staff and students came together, to promote, facilitate and enact positive change in regard to race equality and diversity across the University. Since then, we have employed inspiring individuals, passionate about race equality and education as Student Race Advocates, who work with faculties, departments and all students to actively contribute to many aspects of the University’s work.
The Disability and Inclusion team support students with disabilities, long-term health conditions, sensory impairments, mental health difficulties, social and communication difficulties, for instance Autism and Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) (e.g. Dyslexia). Support can also be provided for temporary or short-term injuries or illness. Specialist staff, Disability Support Officers and SpLD staff, will work with you to identify the most appropriate solutions to your potential barriers to learning.
The Disability and Inclusion team can also advise students about applying for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), creating Epilepsy and Seizure care plans, supporting disability related accommodation requests, parking permits and creating Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEP).
If you are returning to your studies following the birth of a child, are pregnant when applying, or become pregnant during your studies, we are available to provide confidential information, advice and guidance, as well as risk assessments. We take a flexible approach to support, wherever possible, led by you. This applies also to partners and to adoptive parents. If you have caring responsibilities and would like to talk to others who are also studying at the University of Chester with caring responsibilities, we have a dedicated Student and Staff Carers Network that you can get involved with.
“I hope to learn more about the attainment gap for BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) students in certain subject areas, and work with students and staff to ensure the curriculum is inclusive for everyone. I’m also interested in hearing from students about whether they find their course accessible to them and how they feel it should be adapted.”
Whether you’ve left it a few years or a few decades, at Chester, we’ll help you fit right in. Students across all levels and all ages can have concerns around university study. Which is why, in addition to the support across the University and within your course itself, we also have subject-specific librarians and an extensive range of library services, such as help with academic writing and referencing.
We understand that some mature students may have specific concerns, such as worries around academic learning, or additional personal or family commitments. If you would like advice with academic, personal or aspirational aspects of your university life, there is an extensive support network available from our fantastic Student Services team, Careers and Employability team, specific support networks and your own Personal Academic Tutor.
There are a number of support networks that help students, with similar circumstances, to connect with each other, provide mutual support and to share resources and tips. The networks are a safe and secure space where students can discuss challenges, solutions and achievements within a supportive environment. Currently, we have a Student Parent Support Network, Student Menopause Support Network, International Student Community, Cultural Heritage Network and Postgraduate Network. The support networks are open to students studying on any site and include an online platform, as well as in-person events.
Regardless of what stage you’re at in life, at Chester, we have the support in place to help our students achieve their goals.
“Nursing is a profession I have always been passionate about, and after 25 years I decided to take a giant leap and apply to university. I chose the University of Chester due to working with inspiring nurses within the NHS, who had received their Adult Nursing training from this University and were mature students like myself.
I have found that I am one of many mature students at the University of Chester, and balancing work, children, and a husband, has not been as daunting as I thought it would be.
My experience has been very positive, I have met students from all backgrounds and ages who have enhanced my own university experience.
For mature students, returning to education after a while can be daunting, but the University of Chester provides extensive support in adapting to academic work, in the form of study skills, support from your Personal Academic Tutor and support from lecturers.
Nurse training during the pandemic provided student nurses with many challenges; changes in placement experiences and lecture delivery, as well as challenges around keeping ourselves and our families safe. It’s also provided an insight into nursing during a pandemic and given us practical experiences we would not have experienced anywhere else. Alongside which, the University of Chester has provided extensive support and guidance, and always kept students up-to-date with academic and practice changes.
When it comes to nursing, the University’s goal is to support students to succeed, qualify and provide outstanding nurses within the NHS, and this is a goal I strongly believe they will help me to achieve.”
Sammie Adult Nursing“My experience has been very positive, I have met students from all backgrounds and ages who have enhanced my own university experience.”
Our Student Services provide a range of advice, guidance, and support to our students in areas such as:
• Wellbeing and Mental Health

Alongside the University, your Students’ Union is there to support you. Chester Students’ Union’s Student Advice Centre provides free, impartial, confidential advice and guidance on a range of issues from advisers who are experienced and qualified to help you.
When it comes to the academic side of university, there’s lots of support. You will be allocated a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) before you even begin your studies, and they will be there to provide academic advice and guidance, but to also help with any personal challenges you may face –even if they cannot help directly, they will help you find the support you need.
Our Academic Skills team are on hand throughout your time at the University to help you enhance your academic, maths or statistics skills through a range of embedded and extracurricular activities, one-to-one appointments and online support.
On-call Residential Advisers and Coordinators live alongside students on-site, and also provide out of hours support for residential students. All our students can rest easily knowing that our first aid trained University Porters work 24/7 all year round.
If you have something on your mind or you’re feeling in need of support, our Chaplaincy team is available to listen and support students of all faiths and none. No matter what the issue, they provide relaxed and informal spaces to talk, and the kettle is always on for anyone who pops in. There are also open access faith spaces and quiet rooms across the University for whenever you need them.
Our students can call our dedicated student support helpline for free at any time, day or night. This service provides confidential, in-the-moment support from an experienced therapist or adviser who will offer friendly, non-judgemental support.
Our students also have access to the My Healthy Advantage wellbeing app, which contains features such as relaxation techniques and health plans, podcasts, articles and videos on a range of topics, Health Assured x Spotify playlists to help mood, sleep and relieve anxiety, and confidential live chat and email support, as well as a call back request option.
Taking part in sport and keeping active are great ways to make friends, boost your confidence and improve your mental health.
The Athletics’ Union at the University has over 50 sport clubs, both competitive and social, covering all kinds of activities from American football, martial arts and rowing, to cheerleading, archery and dance.
If you’re not really into joining a club but you’re looking to get fit, stay fit, or look after your wellbeing, our sport facilities will help you do just that.
Our facilities at Exton Park are available to all students studying across our Chester sites at affordable prices or at no cost at all. There’s a fitness suite, gym, sports hall, swimming pool, 3G pitch, Astro-Turf pitch, squash courts, tennis courts, golf simulator and an all-weather sprint track.
Our University Centre Shrewsbury students have access to a gym on site, and our University Centre Warrington students have free access to Warrington Youth Zone, our major sports partner that offers access to a gym, sports hall, rooftop 3G pitch and climbing wall.
We have an Active Wellbeing Programme at the University that encourages positive lifestyle changes and regular exercise to support students struggling with their mental health and low-level anxiety issues, with the programme hopefully having a positive impact that can continue throughout life after university.
Volunteering at university can open up all kinds of opportunities, and it’s another way you can make friends, meet new people and of course, give something back. So, whether you’re interested in conservation projects, working in a charity shop, coaching children, befriending elderly people, being a peer mentor, or helping at one-off events, there are plenty of opportunities for our students. We currently offer over 100 volunteering opportunities available within the local community and the University, and our dedicated team are there to support you on your volunteering journey.
“As soon as you set foot on campus you can pick up on the positive energy and smiley faces. I was worried that I would find it tricky to make friends. However, there were so many people to meet that it was never an issue. Everyone is so friendly that it really is easier than you think to settle in and find your people; you’ll soon become part of our vibrant and diverse community and it’ll become your home away from home before you know it.”
Maisy BiologyLed by representatives elected by students, Students’ Unions are a big part of the university experience. So, here’s a quick overview to put you in the know.
Students’ Unions are home to student-led societies, and Chester Students’ Union (CSU) has over 50 of them. Whether you’re looking to spend time doing something you already enjoy, try something new, or meet and socialise with like-minded people; there’s something for everyone. We’re talking things like Marvel, climate action, gaming and roller-skating.
Students’ Unions provide advice to students, and CSU is there whenever you need it. Staffed by a team of professional and experienced advisers, the Advice Centre offers free, confidential, non-judgemental and impartial help. Whatever your query may be, course related or not, they’re here to help your university experience run as smoothly as possible.
A Students’ Union is there to represent its students. CSU works closely with the University to ensure that your voice is heard, and that your university experience is all that it can be. Student Experience Reps seek the views of students about both academic and non-academic matters, and work closely with the University to make positive change happen. If this sounds like something you’d like to do, it’s a great opportunity to stand out, socialise and impress future employers with the key skills you’ve gained.
Students’ Unions host a variety of events throughout the year, so make sure you get involved and have some fun. CSU’s events range from therapy dogs, pizza parties and writing retreats for postgraduates, to inclusion events such as drag workshops and ‘Reclaim the Night’ marches, amongst other big events like the Welcome Fair, Society Awards and the End of the Year Ball.
Students’ Unions run campaigns around topics that affect students, and ‘Anti-Spiking” was one of CSU’s most recent campaigns. University of Chester students, and students nationwide, joined a boycott of night time venues to stand up against spiking and harassment. After listening to students, CSU lobbied Cheshire Council and local venues to improve their procedures and staff training.
Our study abroad options give our students the opportunity of a lifetime, all with the support of a dedicated team. chester.ac.uk/studyabroad
“Between my second and final year, I went to Radford University, Virginia, USA, where I spent a year studying and creating some of the best memories of my life.
While I was abroad, I had so many amazing opportunities – going on a trip around the states during my spring break, city trips with other international students and visiting the capital. I got to experience American culture by going to stay with my friend’s family during Thanksgiving. I was able to explore different subjects outside of my degree; I learnt so many things like basic American Sign Language and Greek mythology. I’ve made friends who I still keep in contact with – these are friendships that will last a lifetime.
I’m definitely a different person after studying abroad. I changed in both my personal life and academic life; I became more outgoing, adventurous and independent.
After I came back my grades improved, as I managed to push myself beyond what I was capable of before going abroad. I received so much support from the University throughout my whole study abroad experience; the application, travelling, adjusting to American culture and support when I came back home. There was always someone who I could contact; in the Study Abroad team or my Personal Academic Tutor.
The experiences, connections and skills that I learnt while I was abroad are things that I believe will be with me for the rest of my life and will help me in the future. Studying in America was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
Abi PsychologyOur nationally renowned Work Based Learning module will give you insight, experience and give your CV an edge.
“Having the opportunity to work alongside the top criminal defence lawyers in Cheshire has been the best introduction to the legal field I could have hoped for. It has been the most rewarding and eye-opening experience of my academic journey so far, as it combined my legal knowledge with legal practice.
My confidence developed with each new role and task I was given. I did things that I would usually shy away from, such as attend conferences with barristers and clients. I worked as a legal assistant in the law firm, magistrates’ and Crown Court, which allowed me to witness court room advocacy. I frequently drafted legal documents, gaining transferable skills to my academic studies, such as clear and persuasive written advocacy. I received regular feedback about my performance –this has resulted in me now having strong confidence in my judgement.
During my placement, I spoke in depth with legal professionals at the firm and in the courts about their routes into their career, and this opened my eyes to different qualifications that are available after I graduate. I have also been able to network with a wide range of legal professionals, which led to further voluntary placements.
To anyone considering Work Based Learning, my advice would be to make use of the opportunity and do not waste it. Remove any preconceptions that many people have of this module, such as it is five weeks of voluntary work. It is invaluable experience that will shape you and your future career, so undertake a placement in an area you love and are interested in as you never know what may come of it.”
Ocean LawOur Careers and Employability team will back you all the way, providing support, skills sessions, advice and opportunities to get you ready for the future.

“As I entered my second year, the Work Based Learning module was introduced. This module allowed nearly all second-year students to work in a real, professional placement for five weeks. At the time, I was determined to work for a company that was actively fighting against climate change. I felt that finding a placement was a mammoth task and I had no idea where to start.
One lecture from Careers and Employability and I knew exactly what I needed to do. The Careers and Employability team has created connections with hundreds of businesses and organisations ready for University of Chester students to thrive in the real world. Sessions run constantly to help prepare students for interviews and help with applications.
For me, I used the CV and cover letter sessions. I was struggling with the layout of my CV; I wanted the document to come across as modern, but also clear and professional. With a cover letter, I did not even know where to start! After a few goes and plenty of help and support from the team, I had a CV and cover letter fit for application.
I applied for a placement on the job board provided by the Careers and Employability team and I was successful to the next stage! Again, a quick preparation session online for my interview and I had secured my placement at Friends of the Earth! Without the help from the Careers and Employability team, I would not have been at all prepared to apply for a placement, let alone be successful.”
Yasmin Geography“When I initially moved away from the Caribbean to attend university, I was a bit nervous. I didn’t know what to expect but I thought to myself, moving away from home can be a frightening thought for anyone. Coming to the University of Chester was so similar to being back in the Caribbean in terms of the small community vibe. I was afforded many different opportunities as a student, such as language opportunities, part-time work and career opportunities specific to my subject area. Never did I think that I would be involved in so many different things whilst at uni, but because of that, my preparedness for the working world was made a bit easier. So, one of the best pieces of advice I would give to new and current students would be to seize as many opportunities as you possibly can while here at the University, and don’t forget to have fun.”

As you know by now, there’s a lot to think about when you first start your university search. So, let’s narrow it down.
When you’ve chosen your area of study, lead your university search with that. Before you get your heart set on somewhere, make sure they provide exactly the course you’re after. It’s a good idea to really look into the modules they offer, as well as their teaching and assessment methods, to make sure they’re right for you.
Whether you’d like to move away, stay closer to home or just want to experience somewhere new, location plays a part in your university choices. So, have a proper think about what kind of location will work for you. Some are more expensive than others, so if you’re leaning towards a big city, perhaps consider if you’ll have time for a weekend job. If you’re looking to save money, choosing a university not far from home gives you the option to commute, which can keep your costs down.
If you already know what career you’d like to go into, find out which universities offer what you’ll need above and beyond your degree. Many industries require relevant work experience, so is that something your university options offer? If you need an additional qualification or an accredited course for your chosen career, there may be universities that offer that, so have a good look around.
Taking up extra opportunities whilst at university can make a big difference to your job search after graduation. So, try to have a look into the opportunities offered by the universities you’re considering – it could be things like earning awards, volunteering or learning another language.
Change can be exciting and also a little bit scary, so what are the main differences you can expect when you come to university?
This is a big one. If you’re living away from home for the first time, then this will be a massive change for you – financially, socially and when it comes to responsibilities. But, remember, the majority of first-year students will be in the same boat as you, so you’re not alone. In fact, you may find that you figure it out together.
Top Tip: Have a go at creating a budget beforehand. You’ll have an idea of your student loan amount and accommodation costs before you start university, and you can estimate costs for things you’ll need every month, like food.
Reading lists, extra research and thinking outside the box – these are things you can expect from university that you may not have experienced before, and giving them the time and energy they deserve will go a long way towards you getting the most from your degree.
Top Tip: Get started now. Pick the subject you’re most interested in at the moment and try doing some additional reading and research around it. This will give you a little flavour of what’s to come.
Your fellow students at the moment are more than likely people who live in the same area as you, know the same people and places as you, and you may have even grown up with them. When you come to university, that all changes – you will meet people from all over the world, of all different ages, with a range of different cultures and views. This is an exciting thing and something to embrace rather than shy away from.
Top Tip: In the first few weeks, make lots of effort to get to know people on your course, in your accommodation and who are part of any sports and societies you’ve signed up for.
Applying to university can feel like quite a task, so to make it a little less daunting, here’s a three-step guide to help you understand what’s what.
chester.ac.uk/howtoapply
• Do your research to help make your university choices
• Make a note of all the deadlines and key dates
• Check the entry requirements of the courses you’re interested in
• Register on UCAS
• Fill in your details (this will include things like education history and qualifications)
• Get your reference sorted
This is your chance to shine. Try to include things like:
• Why you want to take that particular course
• Your extracurricular activities that are relevant to your application
• Your skills or qualities that would make you good at the subject
Don’t forget to proofread your personal statement a couple of times!
Once these steps are complete, you’ll be ready to submit your application.
With a Single Honours degree, your studies will focus on one subject. A Combined Honours degree, sometimes referred to as joint honours, gives you the opportunity to study two subjects. You will spend a fairly even amount of time studying each subject area, with possible opportunities to declare a major – minor towards the end of your studies. Have a think about which option will suit you best, and it will help you narrow down your course search.
If you don’t have the required qualifications to enter on to an undergraduate degree, then a Foundation Year could be for you. Whether you didn’t quite get the grades you were hoping for, or you’ve simply been out of education for a while, if you’ve got the determination and ability then this is a great option. Once the Foundation Year is complete, you can then go on to complete your degree.
This option gives you the chance to undertake a year-long placement as part of your undergraduate degree, which really brings your course to life and will be brilliant for your graduate employment prospects.
Foundation Degrees focus on developing in-demand technical skills for a particular job or profession and offer a combination of workplace learning and academic study. It carries the same weight as two-thirds of an undergraduate degree – equivalent to a Higher National Diploma (HND) or a Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE) qualification.
Degree Apprenticeships combine full-time paid employment with part-time university study and are offered in several subject areas. More information and details about University of Chester Degree Apprenticeships can be found on page 98.

If you’re thinking about gaining a degree or higher level qualification whilst working, then a degree or higher level apprenticeship may be something you’re interested in.
Designed by employers for employers, degree or higher level apprenticeships are an opportunity for businesses to train and support the next generation of employees across multiple roles.
As a student, you would be employed throughout your course and would spend part of your time at the University of Chester, and the rest with your employer, gaining knowledge, skills and behaviours which you would demonstrate in the workplace and through your assessments.
Successful graduates would then leave the University with not only a degree, or higher level qualification, but years of relevant work experience and the valuable connections needed to progress in their chosen specialist sector.
At the University of Chester, we currently have five courses available at undergraduate level.
Degree Apprenticeship courses:
• Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (Level 6)
• Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship (Level 6)
• Social Worker Degree Apprenticeship (Level 6)
Higher Level Apprenticeships courses:
• Healthcare Assistant Practitioner Higher Apprenticeship (Level 5)
• Nursing Associate Higher Apprenticeship (Level 5)
Our courses are co-designed with employers to ensure that apprentice graduates gain the skills they need to thrive in a competitive industry. We provide you with a dedicated team of tutors and support staff offering pastoral care throughout your apprenticeship.
You’ll need to register your interest with us online, once you’ve done that, we can then send you notifications about new apprenticeship vacancies and our apprenticeship Open Days and events. For more information, and to register online, please visit:
www.chester.ac.uk/apprenticeships
“The knowledge I have gained from start to finish within the apprenticeship has aided me into becoming a critical thinker which is a crucial skill as a front-line police officer, as it allows you to think clearly and rationally in a multitude of highly stressful situations and make informed decisions whilst under pressure.”
Daniel Police Constable Degree ApprenticeBefore we get into the detail, it’s useful to know that there are two types of student loan – Tuition Fee Loans for (you guessed it) tuition fees, and Maintenance Loans to help with living costs.
Here are a few key facts about these loans:
• You will only start repaying the loans when you’re earning over a certain amount.
• There is no deadline for the loans to be repaid in full.
• After a certain amount of time, the outstanding amount will be cancelled (see further information about loan repayments on page 102).
If you’re a first-time undergraduate living in the UK, you are entitled to apply for a loan to have your tuition fees paid on your behalf by the Student Loans Company: www.slc.co.uk
This non-income assessed loan is paid directly to the University in three instalments if eligible.
At the time of writing, it is not possible to state what our exact fees will be for students starting an undergraduate degree in 2024, but in 2023 our tuition fees for Home students were:
Undergraduate Degree
Full-time: £9,250 per annum
Part-time: £1,540 per 20 credit module
Foundation Year
Full-time: £9,250
For up-to-date information and further details on our tuition fees, please visit: www.chester.ac.uk/finance
Your course will also involve additional costs not covered by your tuition fees. This may include books, printing, photocopying, stationery, specialist clothing, travel to placements, optional field trips and software. Compulsory field trips are covered by your tuition fees.
For up-to-date details of additional costs associated with your specific course, visit the course page on the University website at: www.chester.ac.uk
Tuition Fee Loans are available to eligible part-time first degree students who complete a minimum of 25% of the full-time course load per year. Part-time course fees for the University of Chester vary, but for self-financing students, fees are normally pro-rata to the full-time fee.
Following the UK’s exit from the EU, students from countries in the European Economic Area and the EU, starting in or after the 2021-22 academic year, will pay International Tuition Fees.
Students who have been granted Settled Status may be eligible for Home Fee Status and if eligible will be able to apply for Tuition Fee Loans and Maintenance Loans. Students who have been granted Pre-settled Status may be eligible for Home Fee Status and if eligible will be able to apply for Tuition Fee Loans.
Irish Nationals living in the UK or Republic of Ireland are treated as Home students for tuition fee purposes.
Whilst at university, you’ll need to think about living costs for things like accommodation, food, travel and bills, and a Maintenance Loan is there to help with these things. If you’re going to be a part-time student, you may also be eligible for a Maintenance Loan.
The amount you receive depends on your household income and where you live and study, as there are differences in the way student finance is governed and support will vary depending on where in the UK you are domiciled. To find out more, please visit:
• England: www.gov.uk/student-finance
• Wales: www.studentfinancewales.co.uk
• Scotland: www.saas.gov.uk
• Northern Ireland: www.studentfinanceni.co.uk
• EU: www.gov.uk/student-finance/ eu-students
If you are an international student, for more information, please visit: www.chester.ac.uk/international-fees
Working while you study can be a great option. Not only will it help you support yourself, but it’s a great way to meet new people and gain new skills.
Our vibrant city and town locations offer a variety of part-time working options, and our Careers and Employability team help students to find part-time work.
Our UniJob service enables you to apply for part-time jobs at the University, or you can use our CareerHub portal to find part-time work in the local area and elsewhere.
Repayments of your Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loan will start in the April after you have graduated or left higher education if you are earning over the threshold.
At the time of writing (January 2023), the student loan repayment threshold for English-resident students is £25,000 a year. Thereafter it will be adjusted annually in line with average earnings.
If you are earning over the threshold, you repay 9% of everything earned above that amount. If you are earning less than the threshold, then your student loan repayments won’t be deducted.
Interest is charged on your loan from the day the Student Loans Company makes your first payment to you or your university or college, until the loan is either repaid in full or cancelled.
Any loan remaining after 40 years will be cancelled. For more information, please visit: www.chester.ac.uk/repayment
