NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION upei.ca/nso A week-long welcome to UPEI for new students!

STUDY ABROAD upei.ca/studyabroad

AFTER CLASS

I joined the UPEI Student Union in my first year at UPEI and have been a councillor ever since. Their staff members and student volunteers are extremely dedicated and have taught me so much about professionalism and leadership competencies. Career counsellors are also an excellent resource for all students, and advisers offer helpful information, resources, and personal advice. UPEI also possesses a strong sense of community; there are plenty of student clubs and societies, and everyone can find a group to belong.

I genuinely would not have wanted to complete my undergraduate degree in chemistry at any other university. The professors here will bend over backwards to accommodate their students. I’ve received such great support throughout my degree, along with invaluable mentoring and advice. I’ve met many wonderful students along the way! The skills I’ve developed and the connections I’ve made will serve me well not only in my future career but in life in general.

I wanted to choose a university where the professors cared about their students’ success. I heard from many former UPEI students that professors in the chemistry department took pride in getting to know each student and genuinely wanted them to do well. After my amazing New Student Orientation experience, I knew immediately that I had chosen the right university!

Being a UPEI student has allowed me to stay in touch with childhood friends studying other programs on campus, but as a member of the Panthers varsity track and field team, I’ve been able to meet new friends, stay active, and travel to interprovincial competitions, helping me balance academics with extracurricular activities. I’m hoping to study abroad with one of UPEI’s many partner schools soon; travelling the world has always been a dream of mine. Having the ability to study in another country and earn credits toward my degree is a massive advantage of studying at UPEI.

Jeremy Charlottetown,NormanPEI Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition, Class of 2025

I chose UPEI for a variety of reasons: flexibility to focus on my studies while staying close to home, the wide range of high-quality programs and courses, and the very manageable tuition costs.

Of all the great programs I searched, UPEI’s Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition program and its many possible career options piqued my interest. I can apply for a dietetic internship in third year and work as a registered dietitian in a hospital or in the community. I could also be a food service manager or get a job developing new healthy food products.

I’m starting my second year in the program this fall, and although I’m still undecided on what I’ll do after graduating, I have appealing options, thanks to UPEI and the Foods and Nutrition program. I’m looking forward to whatever comes my way in the future!

I have also taken advantage of many different student supports available to me, and I continue to access support from UPEI students and faculty alike. With the student-led creation of UPEI’s Climate Change and Adaptation Society, I have access to a community of likeminded students to help with anything from homework to understanding a complex climate issue.

Zoe’s experience at UPEI! upei.ca/studentspotlights 10

Last summer, as part of UPEI’s WorkIntegrated Learning program, I worked for Parks Canada with some fellow third-year climate change students under the supervision of the only climate change specialist in the agency. We gained valuable work experience from projects like tree planting, speciesat-risk monitoring, invasive species management, and a plethora of climate change-centred projects.

If you’re interested in climate change and looking for a more intimate learning setting with small class sizes and hands-on learning, UPEI’s Applied Climate Change and Adaptation program is for you!

Studying climate change at UPEI has given me so much fieldwork experience. The course content is designed to let students apply their knowledge from lectures in a hands-on way. Whether it be partnering with the Smithsonian Institution to set up a biodiversity monitoring plot, installing weather monitoring stations across PEI, or flying drones to collect data and create maps, you’re sure to get out in the field.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT OFFICE

As an international student far from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, I was struggling a bit with course work and isolation, but my professors and lab instructors were very supportive and helped me stay motivated to succeed. Their support also encouraged me to find opportunities to get involved on campus. I worked as the coordinator of the Buddy Program for new international students, with the UPEI English Language Centre’s Explore program for French-speaking exchange students, and now I’m a student assistant with the International Student Office.

Being an engineering student has provided other unique opportunities as well! I was president of the UPEI Engineering Society in 2021–2022 and I’m currently the Engineering Student Ambassador with the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering. I recently participated in the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students’ national meeting as their Bilingualism Commissioner where I met with engineering students from other Canadian universities to discuss student life, advocacy, accreditation, and other important aspects of the engineering

the things I’ve accomplished at UPEI so far, the continued support of my professors, colleagues, and supervisors has not only helped me as a student but allowed me to experience so many things I didn’t expect, and I’ve learned so much about myself. I love being here, and I’m really happy I chose UPEI!

I’m originally from Mauritius, but I have always dreamt of studying abroad. When I met a UPEI advisor at a recruitment fair and discovered the Sustainable Design Engineering program and the work I could do in mechatronics, it really fit my interests in robotics, machines, and aviation. It was more appealing for me to come to UPEI than other Canadian universities.

Looking back on the last four years, I have had so much support from my peers. There are many opportunities available to UPEI students. I became involved with the Engineering Society in my first year, which culminated in the opportunity to attend the Canadian Engineering Leadership Conference in Edmonton, Alberta, in 2020. At this conference, I connected with engineering students from across the country and expanded my growing professional network. I had the honour of co-organizing two regional conferences: the Atlantic Engineering Competition (UPEI, 2021) and the Engineering Leadership Summit (UPEI, 2022). Also, I had the opportunity to join the UPEI Cheer team, which is a much-needed change of pace from focused academic studies.

UPEI was an attractive option for my post-secondary studies due to its smaller class sizes and greater opportunities for interaction with the instructors and staff. The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering provides an incredibly welcoming environment for new students while offering a truly unique program.

Bridget Patterson Victoria-by-the-Sea, PEI Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design Engineering, Class of 2023

It is my intention to pursue graduate studies and realize my goal to work as an engineer in the biomedical field, or to complete additional studies to facilitate research and to mentor the next generations of young engineers. Overall, my drive to graduate and continue to elevate my education comes from my passion for helping people in the most impactful way possible. I intend to remain focused on the recruitment and guidance of femme-identifying people in engineering to give individuals the motivation to consider engineering as a career.

If a tight-knit community, support, and opportunities for extracurricular activities are what you’re looking for, then UPEI’S DVM program is right for you. You can make meaningful connections here and get a high-quality education—all while making lifelong friendships and memories.

Farnaz Farnaghi Newmarket, Ontario Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 2024
