DEBT FORGIVENESS FOR BLACK COLLEGE STUDENTS In spring 2019, when the wealthiest Black man in America, Robert F Smith, injected $34 million to wipe the slate clean for almost 400 Morehouse College graduates, debt forgiveness provided a clear passage for their professional journey. In addition to giving students a leg up, Smith’s generosity magnified the value of debt forgiveness in a nation where many Black students, including first-generation college graduates, begin at ground zero. Recently, arguments against the Biden Administration’s loan forgiveness program suggest that the wealthy will benefit most as they account for a majority of borrowers. Opponents have also argued that loan forgiveness dishonors those who have delayed gratification to repay their deft. Altogether, the Biden Administration’s approach targets the low-income to middle class, and represents much-needed reprieve for Black families. It was Bryan Stevenson, whose advocacy for the oppressed illustrated through his work Just Mercy, who said the opposite of poverty is not wealth but justice. Calling all wealthy Black Americans to serve justly their community!! —CAROLYN WALCOTT

WORLD CUP Th e w o rl d ’s m o s t prest igious soccer t our nament will be h ost ed in Qat ar t his year. BY IBIYI J. WILSON
For the first time, the FIFA World Cup will take place in an Arab nation. This year’s sporting event will be hosted by the nation of Qatar between November 20, 2022, and December 18, 2022. It is also the first tournament not to be held in the summer. I had an opportunity to collaborate with Nkosi Killikelly, President of Kleats Sports Group, an agency focusing on soccer through the lens of youth development and media production. “Our goal is to help brands connect with their audiences through strategic content creation while developing youth as both athletes and future leaders of society”, shares Nkosi. Nkosi is the ideal person to talk with about which teams are the best and would most likely to advance to the finals. Here is our take on the best two teams from each group stage. We have also listed our Top Ten Teams currently in the tournament. Ultimately, we’re sharing our predictions on the last two teams in the tournament that will make it to the final stage. HUM ANITARI AN
AN ACTOR’S LIFE IS FILLED WITH EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES. T.C. Stallings’ career from professional athlete to an actor in 2004 has him finding success in the film industry with projects from Animal Planet’s King of the Jungle to his latest film, No Vacancy. He is on the road frequently, and his furry best friend, Deacon, is waiting to welcome him home when he’s off for a break. . As a licensed minister, when he adopted his chocolate Labrador retriever, it was only fitting to give him the name Deacon. It didn’t take long before his fur baby became the deacon of their family. There are no trips to the movie set for Deacon. He’s satisfied to curl up on his comfy bed with a chew-bone waiting at home. When T.C. returns home, there are trips to the beach which is Deacon’s favorite thing; Labradors love the water. From the start, Deacon holds a very special place in their hearts. He was a rescue from a shelter in Fort Knox where a soldier on deployment to serve our country had to give him up. It was an easy decision to bring Deacon into their family. T.C. has loved animals throughout his life. He had a childhood pet Doberman named Lady and he is also a reptile enthusiast. Deacon is now 15 years old and is more of a homebody. However, according to T.C., he loves wrestling. He can’t walk that well now because he’s very old, but back in the day, Deacon could throw down. Deacon knows many tricks - fetch, turn, roll, handshake, crawl, speak, and says T.C., “He’s pretty good with retrieving the T.V. remote. That’s my favorite trick!” Deacon stayed home protecting the family when it was time for T.C. to film the real-life story of Cecil Johnson in his recent movie, No Vacancy. The film is based on a true story about a jaded reporter demoted to a rural news bureau. Her cynicism slowly transforms when she befriends Cecil, a recovering addict. The film’s storyline captures the real-life First Baptist Leesburg in Florida and the Samaritan Inn shelter. Hundreds of men and women have recovered from drug and alcohol addiction, homelessness, and depression at the shelter. “Homelessness is rising. One homeless person is one too many. Wherever you are in the world, any person in the unfortunate position of being without food and shelter is a problem that deserves our attention,” says T.C. The slogan of the film is “Welcome to Hope” and is a call to action. It is also a testament to T.C.’s life story and strong belief in God. “We can take care of those in need - whether it is adopting a dog in need or guidance for those in our community who can use a helping hand. We each can play a role,” says T.C.

Trends from the Doc
‘Tis the season for fresh beginnings and, therefore, fresh style. But before you go purging your closet in an effort to reinvent yourself for what is sure to be your best year to date, take a deep breath and know that “new year, new me” doesn’t have to mean an entirely new wardrobe. Many of our beloved fashion trends of 2022 are sticking around. For a much-needed fashion refresh, upscale’s Fashion Editor, Dr. Courtney A. Hammonds, is highlighting a few style resolutions he wants you to stick to in 2023. Whether it’s putting secondhand pieces first or playing with bold colors and modern silhouettes, his goal is to share one thread, a desire to get reacquainted with real clothes and really get dressed for 365 days straight.
FASHION
ALL THAT GLITTERS After a two-year hiatus, glitz and glam is back in full force. There is no time like the present to lean into the bedazzled and embellished and discover the lasting power of shine. Sherie L. Nevett (www. sherielnevett.com) proves that this mood needn’t be reserved for only one month per year.
VARSITY JACKETS With so many vintage trends making their way back around, we would be remiss not to make time for the most tried and true of the sporting fashion lexicon. That’s the letterman jacket. Brands such as Honor Roll Shop (www. honorrollshop.com) feature sporty, punchy 60’s iterations, complete with embroidered patchwork and playful colors.
POINTED BOOTS Behold, the perfect black boot. From the pointy toe, to the stiletto heel, to the unique asymmetrical shaft, the Sante Wade (www.santewade.com) boot takes a monochrome black look and adds a bit of interest..

BOLD, BEAUTIFUL LIPS Lip tints and high-definition shades have once again claimed their spots centerstage – on the runways, the streets of style, and soon, in your own makeup kits. Bold 70’s inspired shades with cream finishings are finally stepping out from behind face masks. You’ll want to keep multiple shades of Raquel Riley Thomas’ Beauty (www. raquelrileythomas.com) lipstick in your makeup bag. MEN’S ONESIES Leisurewear continues to be a 2023 constant. Enter the men’s onesie. KeenaBela (www. KeenaBela.com) makes this updated version of the onesie so comfortable you’d better get her one, too. It’s available in a range of colors, but we like the grey best. It has a drawstring hood, full-zip front, and is made from super soft Modal with just a hint of stretch.
CUTOUTS No shame in the cutout game. Skin is still in, and cleverly placed cutouts on dresses, tops, even the occasional low-rise bottom, will stick around as part of the 2023 fashion movement. This Spring/Summer, the Shoulder Reveal is Real—Take the Plunge with This cut-out top by Dayo Women. (www.dayowomen.com).

HEALTHY LIVING Tips from internationally renowned author and healthy lifestyle advocate Dr. Yvonne Sanders-Butler on preparing nutritious dishes after the holidays BY LESLIE E. ROYAL
In 1999, Dr. Yvonne Sanders-Butler, a former elementary school principal, created the first sugar free school in the United States. Known as “Healthy Kids, Smart Kids: The Sugar Free Zone”, she implemented the program in Fulton County, Georgia, a district with 20,000 students.
School, Tuskegee University, Jackson State University, Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institute of Child Human Development (NICHD), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Institute of Medicine (IOM), and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation(RWJF) to bring awareness to healthy eating.
(a healthy approach to desserts) and Healthy Kids, Smart Kids, she believes that “to be healthy, you have to live healthy.” As such, as we embark on a New Year, upscale asked Dr. Butler to share the importance of eating healthy foods after a holiday season of rich, high-calorie cuisine.
Additionally, she has partnered with organizations such as Morehouse Medical

Approximately 70% of Americans are already overweight or obese. Nearly one in every two African Americans are overweight or obese. (49.6%) We have lost and are losing so many of our loved ones to obesity and the diseases that it causes like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and high blood pressure due to our unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles. Americans are expected to gain at least 5 to 12 pounds this holiday season from all of our beloved family recipes that have been passed down for generations. We are passing down these unhealthy habits to our children and grandchildren. Why is it important to eat meals high in protein and fiber? Both help to maintain a healthy diet. Protein helps to repair our tissues and muscles and fiber is important for our digestive health as it helps to regulate how the body uses sugar. When eaten together at a meal or snack, it makes you feel fuller quicker, and it also can help to burn off fat. Nutritionists encourage us to have a balanced diet. Why is that important? A balanced diet provides us all the nutrients we need for our body to function properly. What should we eat for breakfast? Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Healthy proteins may include eggs, Egg Beaters, turkey bacon, veggie sausage, or veggie omelet. And do not forget your healthy carbohydrates that include whole grains such as steel oatmeal with fruit and nuts, whole grain breads, and whole grain cereal with soy, almond, or skim milk. What is an example of what would make for a healthy lunch? A lunch with protein, grain, vegetables, and fruit can begin with a vegetable-based soup that features beans for a great protein boost and lots of healthy fiber. Also include sandwiches on fresh whole grain bread with lean meats, canned fish (tuna and salmon), vegetarian spreads like hummus, or natural peanut butter. Other options are fresh salads, fresh fruit, and yogurt.
Can you share some healthy dinner options? Dinner should be a festive but balanced meal with protein, grain, vegetables, and fruit. The whole family will love Almond Chicken, Creamy Cauliflower and Potatoes with turkey, and Watergate salad. Another is Oven Fried Chicken, Squash Casserole, Red Hull Potato Salad, and Chocolate Silk Cheesecake. These are recipes from my Healthy Kids, Smart Kids book. What makes for great healthy snacks? Snacks that make the brain and body work like cereal trail mix, celery and craisin butter, Baked Lemon Pepper Wings, and spicy popcorn.
Americans are expected to gain at least 5 to 12 pounds this holiday season from all of our beloved family recipes that have been passed down for generations. We are passing down these unhealthy habits to our children and grandchildren.
Why is water important? You cannot survive without water. It makes up twothirds of your total body weight. Our most precious organs and tissues are mainly water. It has no calories and increases clarity. What type of snacks curb afternoon cravings? Homemade Veggie or Turkey Pizza Slices, Cauliflower Spinach Pizza, Baby Carrots and Blue Cheese Dip, and Organic Fruit Juice Popsicles are good snacks. Why should we limit sugary foods like candy, and what would we replace it with? Sugary foods like candy have no health benefits to consumers. It provides empty calories that cause weight gain, and it also lowers the immune system. Here are some satisfying substitutes for traditional snacks. Eat fruit leather instead of a candy bar, granola bar instead of cookies, and a small bagel topped with fruit spread instead of a jelly donut.

#LessBleedingSameLife #MyPerfectlyImperfectLife
USE Myfembree (relugolix, estradiol, and norethindrone acetate) is used to control heavy menstrual bleeding due to uterine fibroids in premenopausal women ≥18 years of age. It should not be taken for more than 24 months. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Boxed Warning: Cardiovascular conditions: Myfembree may increase your chances of heart attack, stroke, or blood clots, especially if you are >35 years old, smoke, and have uncontrolled high blood pressure. Stop taking Myfembree and call your healthcare provider (HCP) or go to the nearest emergency room right away if you have: leg pain or swelling that won’t go away; sudden shortness of breath; double vision, bulging of the eyes, sudden partial or complete blindness; pain or pressure in your chest, arm, or jaw; sudden, severe headache unlike your usual headaches; weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, or trouble speaking. Do not take Myfembree if you: • have or have had blood clots in your legs, lungs, or eyes; a stroke or heart attack; a problem that makes your blood clot more than normal; blood circulation disorders; certain heart valve or rhythm problems that can cause blood clots to form in the heart; high blood pressure not well controlled by medicine; diabetes with kidney, eye, nerve, or blood vessel damage; certain kinds of severe migraine headaches with aura, numbness, weakness or changes in vision or migraine headaches if you are >35 years old; breast cancer or any cancer that is sensitive to female
hormones; osteoporosis; undiagnosed vaginal bleeding; liver problems; • smoke and are >35 years old; • have had a serious allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of your face, lips, mouth or tongue, trouble breathing, skin rashes, redness) or swelling or an allergic reaction to relugolix, estradiol, norethindrone or any of the ingredients in Myfembree. Bone Loss (Decreased Bone Mineral Density [BMD]): While taking Myfembree, your estrogen levels may be low, which can lead to BMD loss. If this happens, your BMD may improve a5er you stop Myfembree, but complete recovery may not occur. It is unknown if these BMD changes could increase your risk for broken bones as you age. For this reason, you should not take Myfembree for more than 24 months. Your HCP may order an X-ray test called a DXA scan to check your BMD when you start Myfembree and periodically a5er. Suicidal thoughts and behavior and worsening of mood. Call your HCP or get emergency medical help right away if you have any of these symptoms, especially if they are new, worse, or bother you: thoughts about suicide or dying, attempts to commit suicide, new or worse depression or anxiety, other unusual changes in behavior or mood. Pay attention to any changes, especially sudden changes in your mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings. Abnormal liver tests. Call your HCP right away if you have any of these signs and symptoms of liver problems: jaundice, dark amber-colored urine, feeling tired, nausea

Getting my heavy periods from uterine ˇbroids under control? Yes, please! My hands are pretty full—so I’ll let Myfembree take care of heavy bleeding. It’s the first and only FDA-approved once-daily pill proven to reduce heavy period bleeding in premenopausal women with uterine fibroids.* With Myfembree, bleeding went down by an average of 84%.† Less bleeding, same life? I'll take it. Ask your doctor about Myfembree, a non-surgical treatment. *Myfembree should not be taken for more than 24 months. † In 2 clinical studies vs an average of 17% reduction of blood loss in women taking placebo by week 24.

and vomiting, generalized swelling, right upper stomach area pain, bruising easily. High blood pressure. See your HCP to check your blood pressure regularly. Effects on Pregnancy: Do not take Myfembree if you are trying to become or are pregnant. It may increase the risk of early pregnancy loss. If you think you are pregnant, stop taking Myfembree right away and call your HCP. Myfembree can cause decreased or no menstrual bleeding, making it hard to know if you are pregnant. Watch for other signs of pregnancy like breast tenderness, weight gain, and nausea. Myfembree does not prevent pregnancy. You will need to use effective non-hormonal methods of birth control (e.g., condoms, spermicide) during and for 1 week a5er stopping Myfembree. Do not take hormonal birth control such as birth control pills, because they may increase side effects and Myfembree may not work as well. Uterine fibroid prolapse or expulsion. Fibroids can come out completely or partially through the vagina. Call your HCP right away if you have increased bleeding from the vagina, which can be serious, or cramping. Severe allergic reactions. Myfembree may cause swelling of your face, lips, mouth or tongue, trouble breathing, skin rashes, and redness. The most common side effects are hot flushes, increased sweating, night sweats, abnormal vaginal bleeding (bleeding that lasts too long, is too much, or is unexpected), hair loss or thinning, decreased interest in sex.
My life. Myfembree. These are not all the possible side effects of Myfembree. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. Tell your HCP about all your prescription and over-thecounter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. If you take oral P-gp inhibitors, take Myfembree first and wait at least 6 hours before taking the P-gp inhibitor. Ask your HCP if you are not sure if you are taking this type of medicine. Tell your HCP if you are breastfeeding. Myfembree may pass into your breast milk. You may report side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. PRESSURE POINTS
T
Opting for chiropractic care in the New Year can lead to a whole new you.
THE FIELD OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE HAS LONG BEEN a source of alternative medicine for patients seeking relief from discomfort associated with their musculoskeletal system, particularly concerning pain within the spine. The thought has been that when this system of the body is ailing, a person’s overall health can and will be affected. Chiropractic care is typically associated with physical therapy because they both can involve exercising of the muscle, icing the muscle, and massaging of the muscle; however, chiropractic care goes a step further by treating muscle discomfort to address other illnesses within the body. Many people make resolutions for the New Year surrounding or concerning their health, friendships, marriages, money, and lifestyle changes. When considering health changes for the year, most people tend to leave out the health of their muscles and spine. The average person does not realize that our spines help to support a lot within our body, and they must be strong and healthy to keep us going and upright. While chiropractors do not prescribe medicines for pain, the treatments they provide help the body to heal within itself. There are several medical conditions that chiropractic care has been shown to aid in the decrease of pain of patients suffering from them. Conditions such as fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and chronic back pain have been shown to benefit from the effects of moderate chiropractic care methods such as tissue pressure. Chiropractic care has also been shown to reduce many surgeries and X-rays, which not only reduces the patient’s exposure to anesthesia, hospitalizations, recovery times, and radiation; it also reduces their overall medical costs. For the New Year, consider incorporating a chiropractor into your daily or monthly health routine, not just to address neck or back pain, however, also to address how to prevent disease, increase energy, promote immunity, and to increase your overall wellbeing. It is also helpful to note that this year will mark the 110th anniversary of the first Black chiropractor, Dr. Fred Rubel,

THIS CHRISTMAS
GUTTER CREDITS
Dr. Kerwin B. Lee shares an essential perspective on the holiday and how it should be commemorated.
T
BY UTAMU BELLE
THE HOLIDAYS ARE KNOWN AS A SEASON OF JOY in which we spend time with family and friends while enjoying festive activities. Unfortunately, for some, it means spending lavishly on material goods. For others, the season brings sadness. We asked Dr. Kerwin B. Lee, the founder and senior pastor of Berean Christian Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia, to share what Christmas really means. It is more than the gifts that we get. It’s celebrating the gift that is Jesus, serving the least of these, and encouraging others in distress. Can you share your thoughts on why Jesus is the reason for the season? Christmas Day is when people from all over the world celebrate his birth. Without Christ, the 25th of December is just another day with no significant meaning. The birth of Christ has the potential to bring about a better quality of living for people on earth and eternal life in heaven. What does Christmas mean to you? Joy is brought to the world because the Savior has been born. It also means peace and goodwill is available to all on earth regardless of their color, conduct, or condition. Why do you think it important to give to the less fortunate during the holidays? Christmas is a season of giving because it celebrates God giving His son to humankind. Doing acts of kindness for those who are less fortunate during the holidays is symbolic of how God gave Jesus to a world of people who were not in position to save themselves. What are your community initiatives to help individuals around the holidays? My community initiatives as a Christian during the Christmas season are to provide food, gifts, and other tangible resources for single parents, children, and others who may be in need. These acts of benevolence are also extended by our church family during the Christmas holidays.
Why do you preach a message of joy? I preach a message of joy for several reasons. First and foremost, is because it is biblical. Luke 2:10 shares that the birth of Jesus would bring great joy and Nehemiah 8:10 reveals the joy of the Lord is our strength for believers. Secondly, I preach a message of joy because it is essential to live a life of serenity and sanity as a Christian. While the holidays are considered “happy times” for many, for some it can bring back negative memories. What advice would you give to those who may be feeling this way? They are not alone. Countless people encounter negative emotions during the holidays. Many times, it is due to who they may have lost down through the years or what they lack at the present time. I would advise them to be a part of environments during the holidays that build them up instead of bringing them down. As it relates to your first book, Winning the Battle of Negative Emotions, Emotions how can individuals positively channel negative energy? Winning the Battle Over Negative Emotions is designed to show how men and women of the Bible experienced and overcame emotions that were negative. Individuals can learn biblical and practical principles on how not to allow negative emotions to keep them down. They can channel negative energy by engaging in projects to build their fitness, family, and faith. Can you tell us about other books that you’ve written and the motivation behind them? I currently have four books – Winning the Battle Over Negative Emotions, Finding Joy in the Word of God, Feeding Your Soul with the Word of God, and ABC's of Church Leadership. My motivation for writing them is to provide informative and inspirational resources for people interested in learning about, lifting up, and living for the Lord.

A FAMILY AFFAIR
How to Handle Family Drama and Enjoy the Holidays BY SHARON R. GRANT, LPC
AS WE TRANSITION FROM FALL TO WINTER, I’m reminded of the holiday season. For some, there is excitement in the air. For others, there is a sense of dread. What about you? How would you categorize your feelings about this holiday season? For me, I’ve looked forward to small and large holiday gatherings over the years, especially prior to COVID. Our gatherings most often included immediate family, extended family, friends, and our church family. We connect by catching up on life events, laughing, eating, playing games, and taking pictures.

address family DRAMA as it arises, allowing for an enjoyable holiday. Create a positive and joyous environment. Spread happiness, positivity, and good vibes. This can be created by simply expressing appreciation to the host for inviting you, greeting each person that you see, and taking an interest in others. You can ask considerate questions such as these. “How are the children doing? How are things going for you?” This helps remove stress and makes others smile.
A lot of families come together in this way to give thanks and celebrate. But for some, holiday gatherings can be filled with drama. Drama can mean negativity, intense unpleasant emotions, and unexpected (or even worse expected) adverse series of events or conflict.
Limit your time at the gathering. To avoid drama, when you arrive, thank the hosts for the invitation. Let them know, in a polite way, that you will be leaving early. You can say, “we will be staying about 2-3 hours and leaving to spend some intimate family time together at home.” The host will appreciate knowing the reason why you are leaving early.
So, what do you do in situations where you know DRAMA will most likely make an appearance at the family gathering? Here are a few tips that will help you diplomatically and calmly
Host the celebration at your home. Hosting at your home provides a great opportunity for you to set the atmosphere by demonstrating kindness, warm hospitality, and genuine

acceptance. Make your guests feel special by saying, “I’m so grateful you are spending this time with us.” Change the scenery by allowing someone else to serve as host. On the other hand, if you traditionally host gatherings at your home, consider allowing someone else to spearhead the celebration this year. This allows you to discreetly and easily leave when drama appears. It also removes you from having to play referee. Set boundaries and expectations ahead of time. We can have unspoken expectations of people of which they are unaware. We have not verbalized our concerns and think in our minds, “They should know”. Rather than running the risk of feeling disappointed over something you did not address, discuss the matter directly with the person. For example, at least a couple of days before the gathering, reach out to the person. You can share, “The last time we got together, I feel you were inappropriate when you yelled at Chris when he asked you a question. That was disrespectful and hurtful. I am looking forward to you coming over this year, but please be respectful to everyone. We are anticipating a peaceful, fun gathering.”
Avoid discussing painful memories at that moment. The family gathering is not the best time to discuss past family hurts, painful memories, or offenses. It’s best to speak with the person at least 2-3 days before the dinner to resolve and minimize a possible blow up at the gathering. It is my hope your holiday season is filled with joy, thanksgiving, and peace! Make sure drama is not welcome this year! Take charge by being proactive! Happy Holidays! Don’t serve alcohol or limit what or how much is served. When some individuals drink, they behave inappropriately. If this has been a source of drama over the years, consider not serving alcoholic beverages if you are the host.
Have measured, controlled responses to conflict. Remember, you can only control yourself and your responses. If someone approaches you in a less than desirable way, pause before you respond. Everything that comes to your mind does not have to come out of your mouth. Ask yourself, “Will this help or cause a volcanic eruption?” Take the person to a private area or outside and gingerly discuss their behavior.

Breakout reality TV star Martell Holt of Love and Marriage Huntsville has been faced with several life changing alterations to his daily decisionmaking process, friend circles, and in his career. First, he and his wife of 12 years decided to divorce. The hardest part was going through a public divorce on national television. Viewers tuned into the real-life drama and watched everything play out on the top ranked OWN Network reality show but there is nothing like getting the story straight from the source, no television cameras necessary. We caught up with Martell while he was in Atlanta spending time with his reported love interest, Real Housewives of Atlanta star Sheree Whitfield. upscale: You look amazing today. I’m glad you don’t look like what you have been through. You are dealing with co-parenting, new schedules, a new baby and basically a whole new life. How are you balancing everything?
Martell: A lot of the Martell you saw back then you know I was a little bit more reserved. I am always transparent about things I am going through. When I say that I started over I mean all the way over. I’ve been through bankruptcy, business bankruptcy and rebuilding businesses; adjusting to having the kids seven days on and seven days off. I am still a strict parent and I still want things done certain ways. I just don’t talk to them about things going on between their mom and I. Making sure the kids get to remain kids is important to me. upscale: You have an addition to the family since your divorce, too. Knox is gorgeous. He strongly resembles all the rest of your children. Martell: I have those strong genes, I guess. So, I introduced the kids to Knox when he was about 4 or 5 months old. I wanted to make sure the time was right. I recorded everything. You know in the situation that my ex-wife and I had. We were not together when Arionne was pregnant, and we weren’t together when Knox was born. When people go through situations like this, you know a lot of people would wait until the kids were in their teenage years or even adulthood to introduce them to each other; but I love all my kids so much. I explained to them that they have a little brother, daddy’s son, and told them that I want them to meet him. Of course, they had questions as kids do. Two weeks later I took [them] to my mom’s house to meet [Knox] and it was like love at first sight. I hate that I waited so long, you know you must move on and move forward. upscale: Absolutely. It seems like you are really managing this co-parent situation well. The internet caught a glance of you guys even vacationing together. Martell: Yes, that was very important to me for the kids to see their parents get along well. Both grandparents were there, and I think that was a very powerful move. We all had a really good time.

upscale: Let’s talk about business. I see you have several different things in the works. How were you able to get back on track after dissolving the family business? Martell: Yes, my entrepreneurial spirit has always motivated me to create things I can own and make money. I wanted to create memories for the kids. Before the divorce or anything I wanted to author children’s books; so, when we went on a family trip to Canada, I decided to pen a book about the things the kids experienced on the plane ride. Well, that book is now published and available for sale and it’s something we all did together. “The Plane Ride to Canada.” We are now working on the second book, “Adventures in Canada” and now that the kids are older, they can have more input. upscale: Tell me about the wine.
Photo by N eville Sim pson/Pajamas styled by My Souther n Kulture
Martell: I have a new wine called “Inest” and it’s named after my grandmother. This is part of my journey of creating generational wealth. I was an advocate of another wine so much that I was telling everyone, and it started selling out in stores. I was like wait; I should be pumping up my own wine. Most of my followers are women. I went to Napa and hired a winemaker. We sampled like 20 different wines, and I was very particular about not having it too sweet or dry. I wanted it right in the middle, so I believe we have orchestrated the perfect taste for your palette. I want to put it in stores and restaurants, and I want it to be everywhere. upscale: Dating after divorce, does it feel weird to you? Martell: It does feel weird to take someone seriously. Like you can have fun all day long, but to take someone seriously, it feels weird. To take someone’s commitment, it feels weird. I am still at the point where I kind of miss everything that I had. I feel like we had something amazing. What we had with our kids, and it was so good. I mean some of the things I complained about I didn’t have to complain about. I said that before. upscale: Sometimes new chapters are healthy, or should we call this the next chapter? Martell: I don’t know, it’s tough. I mean they say it’s tough for women out here. It’s tough for men, too. I guess it’s just my situation. You must take your time. You must make sure that the woman is mature and kid friendly. You must make sure that the woman is open to being a stepmom. Even though you don’t want anyone to replace their mom, you still need someone in their life who is down to take care of your children, too. You have to make sure they are ready to cook for them and instill certain qualities in their life that will make them amazing adults. upscale: Sometimes you think men are not paying attention. There are a lot more single dads out here right now. A lot of single moms just want to be free. Martell: That’s just people. People want to be free but when it comes to my kids, I do not want to be too busy. I don’t care about going to make $15-20 million if it is going to take time away from my kids. I will rather make $1 million a year if it means I get to spend that time with my kids. upscale: You seem a lot more levelheaded than you were in the past and you are definitely calmer. Martell: Oh, I still get rowdy but 2-3 years ago I was very angry. I lost everything. I lost $2-3 million dollars because I couldn’t sell stuff fast enough. Then, I was filming a show where they were painting a narrative of what I was, and it just wasn’t what the truth was. Yes, I cheated, and I admit that part. I was wrong, and I apologized to my wife and my family, my mom and everyone I let down. I can’t redo the past, but I can learn from my mistakes. Now I believe I am a better person, and we just have to move on and look at the bigger picture. I have little people to raise, train, and set the example for going forward. Me having my children is everything. They are my happiness. They are where I get my joy and find peace. When they aren’t around, I feel empty. When they come, I have structure. We read together. We pray together. We eat together; and the chef cooks for us three times a week. I love all five of my kids and they are my reason to always remain resilient. upscalemagazine.com

Hair Resolutions Give your new year—and your hair—a beautiful start with these seven New Year’s hair resolutions courtesy of award-winning hairstylist Jamal Edmonds.
WORDS BY JOCELYN AMADOR HAIR: JAMAL EDMONDS MAKEUP: LEILONI COOPER PHOTOS: ANTWON MAXWELL
Make time for steam conditioning treatments. “Conditioning should be focused on whatever the specific hair texture type needs,” shares hair pro Jamal Edmonds. He points out how steam treatments, used in tandem with deep conditioners, are popular with clients both in and out of the salon. “The steam typically ‘pushes’ the conditioner into the hair a lot faster. It also increases blood circulation on the scalp, which helps increases hair growth.” Whether you choose a hair steamer with a hood attachment or a hand-held model, Edmonds says you should avoid using tap water, opting only for distilled water to fill your steamer. “You want to make sure the water is mineral free so there’s no build up on the hair,” he cautions. Consider style adjustments. “Sometimes we find a favorite hairstyle and before you look up, it’s been 15 years,” shares Edmonds about keeping your coif on trend. “I never really want to walk my clients out of their comfort zone. But, trying something new and exploring things is something I always recommend.” The hair pro suggests starting slow, like adding an accent color or trying “curtain bangs” to add dimension around the face. 40
UPSCALE MAGAZINE
Stay on schedule with color touch-ups. Getting your hair color touched up within an appropriate timeframe could save you money. How? “When women are waiting long beyond their timeframe to get their color touched up, I end up charging them more money because instead having three inches of new growth they now have six—and I have to formulate the color differently. Or, I have to do two formulations on the different ‘zones’ in their hair and it now becomes a color correction service versus just a color touch up,” explains Edmonds. Keep electronic hair tools current. Whether it’s a favorite blow-dryer or an often-reached-for flat iron, it may be time to replace it—because you could be missing out on technology upgrades. When clients ask Edmonds about the best tools to use, he recommends selecting consumer-friendly models. “ A consumer-friendly tool is one that has a temperature dial which allows you to control the temperature at all times. Also a ceramic tool—a flat iron or curling iron—is aways a little better for consumers to use versus titanium. Titanium is a bit ‘harsh’ on the hair and it conducts heat differently,” notes Edmonds.

10/28/22 6:21 PM
BREAK TRADITION It’s a wash-n-go but make it couture. Crafted on a unit, hair pro Jamal Edmonds used foam wrap and created finger waves along the front of this style. “I applied the foam wrap on the rest of the hair and let it dry naturally,” he shares. “Then, I held a diffuser on the part that I finger waved, and once it was dry, I went in with a pick and loosened the texture a bit, finishing with some shine spray.”

Declutter hair products. Make it a habit to go through your hair care products at year’s end, purging out-of-date items—both opened and unopened. Yes, even an unopened product past its prime isn’t as impactful to use as something you’ve purchased new shares Edmonds. “Product technology changes…Maybe you bought an awesome gel for your wash-and-go last year. But now it’s been updated with something that is going to be a little more helpful,” relates the hair pro, who suggests exploring new and improved versions of your hair care favorites. Try layering heat protectant products. If you’re doing any heat styling tool work with your coif, or you’re a Naturalista blow drying and smoothing curls with irons, Edmonds suggests utilizing several forms of heat protectant products. Apply a heat protectant leave-in, a spray then a cream—layering them on to protect your mane during heat styling. The best part about this layered approach: “When Spring comes and you want to wear your hair naturally curly again, you won’t have heat damage,” says the hairstylist. Give wigs a spa day. Just like reviewing outdated hair care products, assessing the condition of wigs should be a yearly ritual notes Edmonds. Toss ones that are shedding, damaged or take them to a salon where you can have them repaired. “Find a salon to have your wigs serviced—deep conditioned, styled, maybe have the lace adjusted,” note the stylist. “Or, you can spend a day shampooing them, putting them on wig blocks. Starting off the year with clean wigs is a beautiful thing.” 42

NEW YEAR CROP An effortless look for 2023… Freshly shampooed and conditioned Natural hair is blown dry just long enough to wick away some of the moisture. “I took a stying cream, emulsified it in my hand and massaged it into the hair,” details stylist Jamal Edmonds about his technique for this look. “ Next, I took a hair sponge and loosely manipulated the top of the hair until it coiled. I went over it loosely at the top, and around the hairline, and used edge taming gel to create the little hair around the edge.”

SHINING STAR
ICON JODY WATLEY CONTINUES TO CREATE TIMELESS MUSIC WHILE EXPLORING VARYING VENTURES. Gra c ie M eier
BY UTAMU BELLE
Grammy-award winning artist Jody Watley is setting the mood exactly right this Christmas with the release of her new holiday single, “Christmas Time Is Here”. The song, released on November 17, is one of the recent projects in which fans can look forward to from the iconic singer and songwriter. She also has several recent EPs. With many notable achievements spanning her decades long career, the Chicago born star reflected on the most memorable, during an interview with upscale Magazine. Have you always wanted to pursue a music career? Growing up, I had many interests and goals outside of always wanting to be an entertainer. I was interested in becoming a fashion designer, writer, and owning my own business. I’m fortunate and blessed I get to do all of those things by being fueled by my personal determination and vision. When did you begin writing and making music and what motivated you to do so? I started writing in junior high school – songs, poetry, and short stories as a form of expression. Being somewhat of an introvert, music has always brought out the other side. I would enter into talent shows at school and write books that my friends would enjoy reading. What would you say was the highest point in your career or the most memorable? Most recently being inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame, receiving an honorary doctorate in business and a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award. There are many though I will always say winning the Grammy Award for Best New Artist remains special. What is a typical day in your life like? I own an online boutique – JodyWatleyShop.com. It’s been open for over 20 years initially with t-shirts, limited edition CD digipaks, posters, and so on. It’s now focused on my signature line of wellness candles and other self-care items. Taking online college courses from time to time in business and other interests, running my social media, and taking meetings with regard to partnerships. Can fans look forward to anything new from you in the near future? I always have new projects and encourage everyone to “Like” and “Follow” Jody Watley Artist pages (Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, Amazon – Subscribe to Jody Watley YouTube Channel) and catch up with what may have been missed, remixes, collaborations, and so on. Do you have any advice to share? I’d like to remind everyone to always let your light shine and believe in yourself. Never let anyone dim your light and make you feel you can’t do or be whatever you want. If you work for it, anything is possible so keep the faith and carry on. Wattage!

AN ALL-AMERICAN STAR ALL AMERICAN: HOMECOMING’S NETTA WALKER ON BEING SEEN AND HEARD BY JOCELYN AMADOR
Netta Walker’s heritage brings together the best from different worlds. From her late African-American father, whose family was active in the civil rights movement, she received the fire for social justice. From her Filipino mother she was gifted resilience and love for the culture. And from both, she endures with joy and familial pride. “Growing up, I got very lucky…being so accepted in who I am,” says Netta, who stars as “Keisha McCalla” in The CW sports drama All American: Homecoming. “But, I also know there’s many people who haven’t felt that way. What’s so special about getting to do the show is showing other kids who look like me that we deserve to be represented.” Leveraging her onscreen presence on the popular show to initiate change is important to the Jacksonville, FL, native. “I had a very thick race conversation with my parents when I was about 5,” recalls Netta. “They made sure I knew from a very young age that as a Black and Asian woman that my life was going to be much harder…So they told me to stand in my truth and fight for the values that they, and my grandparents, taught me.” Among the topics she feels passionately about are climate change (“I try to talk to as many people as I can to read the science”), veterans’ rights and abolition of the
privatized prison system—with the last two hitting on a very personal level. “There’s a massive issue in this country with how we support our veterans,” states Netta, whose father was a career naval officer. “Watching people in the military who put their bodies on the line actively, and after they get out getting close to no support, is really troubling…I watched that disintegration with my father [when] he was diagnosed with PTSD. The lack of support from the military really confused me because he dedicated so much of his life to it.” From her brother’s experience, Netta also feels strongly about shedding light on privatized prisons. “I believe he was 22 [at the time of arrest]. He got out [two years later] and was a completely different person. Hearing the story about what it was like being in a private prison in Florida, and the fact that the state monetizes prisoners’ labor, is atrocious to me.” Using her celebrity to spotlight issues of concern is a family mandate for this classically trained actor. “My parents were very adamant about using our voice to stand up for what’s right. And, changing things that we see wrong,” says Netta. “I hope that along my career I can continue to do that—if that’s something I’ll be gifted, you know?”

BLACK YOUTH ADVOCACY GEORGETOWN JUVENILE JUSTICE CLINIC AND INITIATIVE DIRECTOR KRISTIN HENNING IS THE VOICE OF BLACK YOUTH
Courtesy of Kr istin Henning
BY UTAMU BELLE
K
Kristin Henning was born into a family of teachers and preachers in the AME Church. She grew up seeing her family speak out against racial injustice and advocate for Black children. In her book, The Rage of Innocence: How America Criminalizes Black Youth, she writes about injustices, including her own brother who was incarcerated for many years before dying in prison. When did you start writing? In 2016, I was invited to contribute a chapter for the book POLICING THE BLACK MAN: ARREST, PROSECUTION, AND IMPRISONMENT. (ed. Angela Davis). My chapter was called “Boys to Men: The Role of Policing in the Socialization of Black Boys”. What compels you to write? I write to change hearts and minds and to give voice to the many Black youth who have been traumatized by the pervasive presence of police in their lives. I want readers to understand that Black youth who have been stopped and frisked by the police live with nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety, depression, and anger. What was the inspiration behind this book? I have been representing children charged with crime in the nation’s capital for the last 26 years. In that entire time, I have only represented four white children. Every other child has been African American. We know that teenagers of all races

engage in the types of reckless and impulsive behavior that can be defined as criminal. Yet, all over the country, we see that Black children are far more likely to end up (in) juvenile and criminal courts. I wrote this book for all of the Black parents who have seen their child shackled, incarcerated, or even killed by police. How do you think your book can help in achieving meaningful change? We must radically reduce the footprint of police in the lives of Black children. That means we need police free schools. It means that we need to decriminalize normal adolescent behaviors. The real path to public safety is a public health strategy that treats children with love and respect. [We need] a strategy that recognizes that children are suffering from trauma and makes sure that all children have access to mental health services, social workers, vocational opportunities, educational support, and opportunities to learn social and emotional skills. Are you working on any new projects? I am focused on educating folks and implementing the ideas I talk about in The Rage of Innocence. I am teaching and training school officials, teachers, judges, prosecutors, defenders, law makers, and youth themselves. My office – the Georgetown Juvenile Justice Clinic – has partnered with the Gault Center to develop a racial justice toolkit and an Ambassadors for Racial Justice Program for youth advocates. We host a monthly racial justice webinar.

REMEMBERING ROSEWOOD
Courtesy of Descendants of Rosewood
LAST WORD
BY E. MONIQUE JOHNSON
Immortalized in a 1997 film starring Don Cheadle, Ving Rhames, and Elise Neal, and directed by John Singleton, the horrifying events of Rosewood are anything but fictional. A century ago, in Levy County, Florida, the town of Rosewood was decimated by a racially motivated attack. Residents were brutally murdered, their homes burned to the ground, and survivors were forced to flee into the swamps. Despite being traumatized by those events, survivors and descendants of Rosewood eventually got justice. Breaking their silence after 60 years of fear, shame, and hesitancy, a 1983 newspaper article and “60 Minutes” interview led to a historic multi-million dollar judgment. In 1994, the Florida legislature awarded $2.1 million (of a requested $7.2 million) to Rosewood survivors, making them the first, and then only, African Americans to receive reparations from a legislative body in America. The residents of Rosewood were not strangers to success, though. The town was an example of what African Americans could accomplish. That legacy of excellence will be honored January 8-14, 2023 in Gainesville, Florida for the Remembering Rosewood Centennial Commemoration. It is hosted by the Descendants of Rosewood Foundation, Inc., the University of Florida Levin College of Law, and international law firm, Holland & Knight, who represented survivor in their reparations case. Find out how you can be a part of history, too. Visit www.rememberingrosewood.com for more information.
