READY FOR THE RUNWAY The fashion industry is dismantling entry barriers and paving the way for future black creatives. When I think about the future of minority creatives, I look at the past, the current roadblocks and the emergent voices carrying us into the future. How does the fashion sector resolutely embrace Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and galvanize the industry into action? Delivering exceptional growth, even in the short term, is a tall order. Real change starts with an authentic understanding of what representation truly means. Representation is more than just First, young and unapologetically melanin minds must see themselves within the sector. In the recent past and present there’s been great examples of inclusivity from André Leon Talley, Patrick Kelly, and Bethann Hardison to Edward Enninful, Telfar, and Rihanna. Secondly, equip and invite black creatives to take up the mantle. If more black creatives are to rise through the ranks, robust and careful investment in development is required. That is on all fronts of the industry from design, managemnt, modeling, production, manufacturing, retail merchandising, and buying. Black creative voices aren’t just next — they have arrived. —DR. GET YOUR MIND RIGHT

Inn o vat i ve m en ’s g rooming br and Bev el par t ner s w it h o rg ani z at i o n s to i nc re ase access t o ment al heal t h resources BY TRISTAN WALKER

Almost ten years ago, I founded Walker and Company Brands and our very first brand, Bevel, was born. I launched Bevel with the mission of prioritizing the head-to-toe self-care needs of Black men everywhere. Over the years, as both Bevel and my family have evolved and grown, so has my understanding of what “self-care” truly means. As our lives have grown more and more complicated, the need for self-care has also grown exponentially. Today, according to the National Institute on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities, nearly one-in-five Americans struggle with a mental illness in any given year, regardless of their race. Building on that, Black Americans are 20% more likely to develop a mental health illness in their lifetime and suicide is ranked as the third leading cause of death amongst African Americans between the ages of 15 – 24 years old. These staggering statistics speak to the urgent need for mental health, wellness, and self-care in our community. I and Bevel are committed to making products that not only keep us fresh but that also improve our community’s mental health and wellness. Earlier this summer, I proudly announced Bevel’s mental health initiative called Get Your Mind Right in partnership with Alkeme Health, Black Men Heal (BMH), and MESS in a Bottle. As a part of our push to help you get your mind right, we’re providing you with a free 3-month pass to the Alkeme Health Gold Membership.

Through my own personal journey as a father, husband, entrepreneur, and CEO, I’ve had to acknowledge challenges, beyond my personal control, that impact either the mental health and wellness of me, my family, or my team. Unlocking mindfulness and self-compassion helps us be our best selves and I’m proud to partner with these organizations to make mental health resources more readily available. Proper self-care is one of the most meaningful investments you will ever make. The Get Your Mind Right initiative continues Bevel’s core values and commitment to the needs of Black men, inside and out and head-to-toe. In 2020, the world was on pause during the COVID pandemic. Family pets eased the day-to-day routine of sheltering in place. Vanessa Simmons, television personality, talk show host, creator of Glitter and Lace clothing line, and daughter of rap legend Rev. Run, knew the timing was right to bring home a sweet fur baby for her 8-year-old daughter Ava Marie. “While I am all for rescuing and have in the past, we had to find a very specific breed and type for my daughter’s allergies. We found my eight-year old’s perfect companion from a breeder in Korea during the 2020 lockdown. Being an only child, we wanted to make our time at home memorable and special, so we surprised her with a new puppy,” says Vanessa. This special breed is a Yorkshire Terrier. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), the pet has an adorning glossy coat, charming face, and a tenacious reputation as ratters. At times called Yorkies, they are brave, feisty, and occasionally bossy. For Vanessa’s daughter Ava Marie, with one look, it was love at first sight, and she knew her name should be Cupcake. Now two years as a beloved family member, Cupcake is living up to her big personality reputation. “She thinks she can talk, and every morning, she moves her mouth as if she is telling us Good Morning and even gives Ava hugs. It’s the cutest thing,” says Vanessa. There’s no surprise Vanessa’s wish to create great memories for her daughter is a success with Cupcake. The love and connection between the two are undeniable. “Cupcake loves to be by Ava’s side often, so she has a schedule of waking up when my daughter does and doing school drop offs and pickups in the afternoon followed by the park for some fun in the sun with her best friend Ava,” shares Vanessa. They often enjoy getting Cupcake treats from Healthy Spot dog bakery. And who wouldn’t love a swim date at the pet-friendly Hermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills, where Cupcake is welcomed and hangs poolside while her favorite girl Ava swims? She will take online classes at Diggity Training School where she’ll learn tricks to show off her playful spirit. A girl and her best friend always love to play dress-up. Ava has a favorite outfit for her bestie, a varsity jacket boasting her home country of Korea. When Vanessa decided to make a tough year a wonderful time, she hit the jackpot with a pup named Cupcake, creating a long list of memory-making with her best friend. We will be waiting to see what best friend fun is next.

HOME HEALTH CHECK 5 Things You Need to Know About the Air Quality in Your House Before Holiday Hosting

BY TONY ROYAL

T

The holidays are just around the corner. Thanksgiving is an opportunity to give thanks for our blessings. We celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas. We look forward to the New Year with expectation. The holidays allow us to enjoy being with our family and friends in fellowship. Many individuals like to have parties in their homes. It’s more personal and you let your loved ones know how much you really care when you host them in your personal space. But as you celebrate this holiday season, you want to protect the health of your guests. You don’t want to

put yourself in the position of making someone sick and being held liable financially for it. Having 30 years of experience in residential renovation and as the owner and lead certified home inspector for Get Right Inspections, I have current and prospective homeowners reaching out to me regarding inspecting the air quality in their houses. Because of so many chemicals in the air today, as you prepare to celebrate the holiday season, you should have your home inspected for some of the most prevalent ones. These are five things in which you should be aware.

Radon can be present. According to the Centers of Disease Control (CDC), it is a radioactive gas that forms naturally when uranium, thorium, or radium, break down in rocks, soil and groundwater. You get exposed when it seeps through the cracks and small holes in your home. One in fifteen homes has high radon levels and 21,000 lung cancer deaths result annually from it. Carbon monoxide can be present. The Minnesota Department of Health says carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas formed by the incomplete combustion of fuels. Exposure can lead to poisoning. Sources are clothes dryers, water heaters, furnaces, fireplaces, and gas stoves. Mold can be present. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIH), states molds are microscopic organisms. Indoor molds grow on surfaces. Exposure results in nasal congestion, eye irritation, blurred vision, sore throat, chronic cough, and skin rash.

RadoNova

Three Easy to Use Radon Tests to Measure Air Quality in Your Home According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon is a natural, radioactive gas that you can’t see or smell. Prolonged exposure to radon is known to cause lung cancer and elevated levels of it have been found in every state. If you would like to perform at home radon testing, consider these products below.

Because of so many chemicals in the air today, as you prepare to celebrate the holiday season, you should have your home inspected for some of the most prevalent ones.

Lead paint can be present. The Mayo Clinic reveals that lead poisoning occurs when lead builds up in the body. It can be fatal. Lead in paint, dust, air, water, and soil are sources.

VOCs can be present. According to The American Lung Association, volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are gases that are emitted into the air from products or processes. Some of them can cause cancer. Sources are building materials, paint, varnishes, sealants, cleaners, flooring, carpet, and more. Breathing it can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, cause difficulty breathing and nausea, and damage the central nervous system and other organs. Tony Royal is a certified home inspector. Visit his website at www.GetRightInspections.com.

AirThings Wave Plus www.airthings.com Having six sensors for measuring Radon, CO2, airborne pollutants, humidity, temperature, and air pressure, this battery-operated smart indoor air quality monitor gives individuals keen insight into the air they are breathing in the home, office, school, or multi-unit space. Compatible with online dashboards, Android, and iOS, users can check levels utilizing the free mobile app and AirThings dashboard. RADEX MR107 Advanced Radon Gas Detector www.radonmarket.com This device detects changes to gas concentration and sounds an alarm when the levels are no longer safe for you and your family. Having the ability to transfer data to your

computer for analysis, capabilities include measuring the volume activity of radon, adjustable audio alarms, tracking of dynamic changes in radon, humidity, and air temperature, and storing gathered data. The Radonova QuickScreen™ www.radonova.com This product is an activated charcoal, short-term radon detector. Designed to work over two to four days, it contains 35+ grams of charcoal and as the sensitivity of the device is increased, and occurrence of water vapor saturation is decreased, the result is an accurate radon test. You can utilize the online portal, RadOnline.com, where measurement data is exchanged with the lab. Within days, the results from your home test will be available via the online portal or email.

B

MINDFUL HEALING The State of Black Men's Mental Health in America BY DR. JOHNECIA L. MASON

Black Men. Therapy. Mental Health. These are words that typically are not paired together. Mental health in the African American community has always been a very taboo topic and as children you are taught that whatever happens in the house, stays in the house. You are taught from a young age to keep family secrets and that it is not anybody’s business what happens in your family. From a young age, many Black men are looked at as “weak” if they show emotion, outwardly express themselves, or have public breakdowns. This causes them to hold onto trauma into adulthood. These unresolved traumas usually shape how they cope with disappointments in life that come from failed relationships,

20

UPSCALE MAGAZINE

/

career failures, broken friendships, and other problems. Men, especially Black men, have been taught to not talk about their trauma and to deal with their “issues” themselves because that’s what real men do. The truth is this thought process has caused our Black men to lash out in ways that have been counterproductive to their progress and caused severe consequences for many of them. Psychotherapy, which is the formal name for mental health treatment, is defined by the Mayo Clinic as, “a general term for treating mental health problems by talking with a psychiatrist, psychologist, or other mental health provider. During psychotherapy, you

learn about your condition and your moods, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase wellbeing and healing”. The Surgeon General’s Mental Health report states that society typically focuses on the woman and her mental stability because she is seen as the “glue” of many communities. She is primarily the one that nurtures the children, takes care of the home, and is held responsible for solving all problems within her family. Men have had to take a backseat to their mental health needs out of fear of being labeled by their community as “less than” or “a coward”.

Most African American men have resorted to sharing their trauma or feelings through a guy’s night out or at the barbershop, which has been a long standing “therapy spot” for Black men. While important, these avenues do not deal with the deeprooted pain that must be addressed to truly heal from one’s pain. There are simply not enough resources that specifically target the Black man and his mental health needs, however there is one such organization, Black Men Heal (www.blackmenheal. org). Their focus “centers on the mental health needs of Black Men because of the lack of resources attending solely to this population”. The mission of the organization is to “provide mental health treatment, education, and resources to Men of color”. They also address the barriers that prevent Black men from seeking mental health assistance. These barriers include cost, lack of identifiable providers, and stigma associated with seeking therapy. Another resource is Alkeme Health (www.Alkemehealth. com). This digital platform, centered on the Black culture, presents therapy modules, guided meditations, and live discussions presented by expert therapists in the field of wellness, psychology, and mindfulness. Once barriers to seeking therapy are resolved, our Black men have a chance. Black men are treasures in the Black community and are needed to help keep our race thriving. Ensuring their mental stability should be a top priority. They are the leaders of our community, African kings, and our future generations need to be raised by confident, competent, and courageous men. Dr. Johnecia L. Mason is a professor at Georgia Piedmont Technical College and the co-founder of Rodney’s Gift, Inc. Visit her website www.rodneysgift.org. Follow her on Instagram @ CreationsByJohnecia.

Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation BLHF has launched the COVID-19 Free Virtual Therapy Support Campaign to raise money for mental health services provided by licensed clinicians in our network. Individuals with lifechanging stressors and anxiety related to the coronavirus will have the cost for up to five (5) individual sessions defrayed on a first come, first serve basis until all funds are committed or exhausted.

Leadership

EMOTION BY DESIGN This Marketing Guru Shares a Few Creative Leadership Lessons He Learned at Nike

O

OVER THE YEARS, NIKE, a brand where I spent 27 years on a journey from design intern to Chief Marketing Officer, has infused and surrounded every output of the brand with emotion. Over time, the Swoosh has become more than a logo. It’s a symbol of human potential. The Just Do it slogan isn’t only a tagline. It’s a state of mind adopted by millions of people globally. And the attachment people have to their sneakers goes way beyond their use. I call this Emotion by Design – the ability to create products, stories, and experiences that make people feel that even their most audacious dreams are possible to achieve. Here are two lessons from my book called Emotion by Design: Creative Leadership Lessons from a Life at Nike. (12 Books Publishing) "Get Outside Yourself." Leaving inspiration to chance, where it just hits you in a random moment, is not a recipe for sustained success in the creative world. You have to go out and find it. While some may be born with a seeker’s mentality, others can learn to be more curious. Curiosity is a muscle, and muscles need to be trained. Knowing this allowed Nike to consistently fuel

22

its imagination and build a culture of creative curiosity. We constantly allowed our curiosity to get us way outside of ourselves and our sector in the pursuit of inspiration to drive our innovation. So much so that we looked all the way out into the world of space exploration. Everything from memory foam and cat scans to wireless headsets and the computer mouse were inspired by innovations for the final frontier. Nike’s own revolutionary Nike Air technology was inspired by NASAdesigned astronaut helmets. Curiosity is the rocket fuel for creativity. It’s what allows you to see opportunities and harness the inspiration to seize them. Finding inspiration can be difficult, despite how infinite it is. HELLO PASSION 10 ways to get reconnected with your lover and invite excitement back into your marriage.

BY SHARON GRANT, LPC

When I was younger, the song by Marvin Gaye called “Sexual Healing” was the epitome of passion. The song starts out with these lyrics. “Oh, baby now let’s get down tonight. Ooh baby, I’m hot just like an oven. I need some lovin’. And baby, I can’t hold it much longer. It’s getting stronger and stronger. When I get that feeling, I want sexual healing.” It’s as if he is about to explode from sexual desire and excitement, and he is calling on his darling to satisfy those intense feelings. Wow, that’s passion! As a Licensed Professional Counselor and Marriage Coach, I have worked with a lot of couples that struggle to keep the passion alive. Often, LIFE happens. Work, children, church ministry, and other roles can cause individuals to experience emotional and physical health challenges as well as stress. This keeps couples from focusing on cultivating their marital relationship. Then the inevitable happens. They grow apart emotionally, and passion has left. There is no better time than now to get reacquainted and have that initial passion return. In my work with many couples from diverse backgrounds and varying stages of marriage, I’ve discovered ways to help you to keep passion alive in your marriage. Try introducing these ten steps and create several of your own. •T ake a stroll down Memory Lane. Most couples are very passionate when dating and in the first years of marriage. My husband and I used to fall asleep talking on the phone and looked forward to the weekend visits when we were dating and engaged. Resume some of those things you did that initially attracted you to each other. •M ake date night a priority. Be intentional about setting aside quality time to spend with one another, free of distractions. A date is meant to be romantic, enjoyable, and a time to connect.

• Be spontaneous. Try different things and be willing to compromise when your spouse wants to try something new. Avoid the same old thing. Be open to change. Develop couple’s hobbies. • Open communication. Talk openly about your likes and dislikes. Listen for understanding. Create an environment to truly hear without taking what your partner says as a personal attack. • Remain intimate/have sexual relations. When it comes to the sex, foreplay should start before you reach the bedroom. Days before, begin connecting with and pleasing each other in the ways that fill your spouse’s love tank. • Have realistic expectations. Be empathetic to limitations of your spouse, especially in the area of sexual expectations. Make up for it in other ways by being creative! • Have weekly check-ins about all areas of the marriage. Talk about what is going well, problematic areas, and your plans for improvement. • Have fun. Laughter is medicine for the soul. Flirt as you did when you started dating! • Have intellectual stimulation. Have conversations about different topics that are of interest to both of you. • Be a true partner. Help each other to be successful and achieve goals. Share day-to-day duties. This helps to free up time and lessen physical exertion and stress on your spouse. MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT FANS ARE GEARING UP FOR ONE OF THE MOST EPIC FILM RELEASES EVER, AS BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER IS SET TO HIT THEATERS ON NOVEMBER 11. THE RELEASE SIGNALS AN IMPORTANT MOMENT IN MARVEL HISTORY, AND FOR ACTRESS LETITIA WRIGHT WHO HAS A HEADLINING ROLE IN THE FILM. IT’S ANOTHER LANDSLIDE ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR A WOMAN OF COLOR WHO’S HAD HUMBLE BEGINNINGS. The twenty-eight-year-old Wright, who plays Princess Shuri in both Black Panther and its sequel, was born in the South American country Guyana. She moved to London, United Kingdom with her parents when she was just seven years old. Prior to landing her role in the hit Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, the versatile actress had roles in films such as Sing 2, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: End Game, and Guava Island. She was featured in television series such as Top Boy, Humans, I Am, Small Axe, Black Mirror, and Dr Who, years after drawing inspiration for her acting career from the movie Akeelah and the Bee. Following her successful role in the Black Panther movie, where she starred alongside the likes of award-winning stars Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o and the late Chadwick Boseman, the actress shared, in an interview with Rolling Out Entertainment host Soyini Phillips, how proud she was of her humble beginnings. Wright also expressed how happy she had been about the support she received from the Guyanese community back home following the blockbuster hit.

“It makes me feel really, really proud that as a young Guyanese woman, you know, [that] people are being inspired. And just for them to also know that I rep Guyana wherever I go. When I grew up in Guyana, we don’t have an acting industry like that, but to be able to now do it. And for anybody back home that may say, ‘I always wanted to be an actor and Letitia just did it’just to know that they can do it too. I just hope that it continues to inspire people. So, it’s an honor to do that for my country,” she stated. Testimony to the love for her country of birth and Guyanese heritage, the star’s Instagram page proudly displays the Guyana flag. It is evident that she wears her ability to be an inspiration as a badge of honor, as much as her faith in God which she also candidly speaks about and showcases. Wright recalls the excitement of being the topic of discussion and her face being plastered across local newspapers when the news broke of her South American heritage, following the Black Panther hit release. The film which starred Boseman as T’Challa has filled the recurring need for the depiction of Black super-heroes, more specifically Black women in this light. Wright, who attended the Identity School of Acting and was a BAFTA nominee for her role in Urban Hymn, has always been expressive about being an inspiration to other young women of color, through her portrayal as Shuri in Black Panther. Following the filming of the movie, she told the New York Times that it was “really beautiful to see so many young people being inspired,”

as she also spoke about physical challenges which she had encountered during the making of the film. The new release is an emotional one for fans and the stars alike, with Boseman’s shocking and untimely death in 2020, and for Wright who has played his tech-savvy little sister in the original film. The new film pays special tribute to Boseman, and Wright recalls moments of self-doubt while filming the sequel. But she noted that she could hear Boseman’s voice in her head offering comforting words of reassurance. This, she shares, has kept her moving forward. In one of her more recent movie roles, Wright stars alongside fellow British actor Tamara Lawrance in The Silent Twins, a touching film based on the real-life story of identical British twins Jennifer and June Gibbons. The film was officially released on September 16. Wright also stars in the new dramatic film Aisha, where she plays a Nigerian woman seeking asylum in Ireland as she tries to escape violence in her home country. The movie is presently playing in theaters. Wright is truly a dynamic force to be reckoned with. Her versatility and ability to adjust in her roles has been proven time and time again. Fans are anxious about the future and the direction of her character as Shuri. Will she one day hold the mantle to lead Wakanda? It would definitely be an interesting take and her fans look forward to learning the answer soon.

Off camera she’s warm, laughs easily and is a big believer in faith over fear. So much so that three years ago she put her quest for leading lady status on a set of billboards—located near Tyler Perry Studios. “I’m a big proponent of speaking and writing down the vision,” says the wife and mother of two, who prefers to be known for her talent rather than that viralmoment tactic. Here, she lets us in on what keeps her inspired to strive higher…even while in the midst of a challenging health diagnosis.

Actress Racquel Palmer is happy to sit down for this interview, literally. Fresh from a strenuous “leg day” session with her trainer, the star was all smiles as she took a seat and settled in for our conversation. The thrice weekly workout, she explains, is part of a routine that keeps her fit and focused. “My husband is so wonderful, he makes me protein shakes in the morning,” shares Racquel, who then mentions in the same breath that she has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). “I take Vitamin C, I take my supplements so that going through the day I could have less episodes…and sometimes I put a piece of candy in my mouth, I love sweets!” Though her MS was diagnosed about seven years ago, it was only recently that the New Jersey native made the news public via an Instagram (@racquelpalmer_) post. “I got really sick when we were beginning to shoot season 2 of All The Queen's Men. I couldn’t talk and it would happen sporadically,” she recalls. “I wasn’t able to get the words out.” Luckily an unexpected lull in the show’s production allowed her to get treatment. And, with the encouragement of her sister, Racquel is now sharing her MS journey in the hopes of helping others. “It’s my faith. Because what God has destined for me, there’s no MS that’s going to stop it. So I just push along,” she says. “I can’t lie and say every day is easy. Because it isn’t. But I finish my days and I move forward.”

BRAIDED BEAUTY “I have a 4-year-old who loves her Natural hair. She loves her beads. I wanted to do something so my daughter can see me wear braids and beads and loving my Natural self.”

Keeping goals front and center is a main motivator to keep things moving for the former public school theater teacher. “My husband and I, in our bedroom, we have all the different things we want to do written on our walls,” says Racquel. “We see it everyday. We say it to each other daily. And, also, I make sweaters.” The star uses the tops she adorned with phrases like, “I Am An Emmy Winner” or “I Am A Grammy Winner,” as visual cues. “Not only am I speaking it [my goals] but I see it. They’re my personal billboards,” smiles the actress, admitting she wears one of her sweaters every day. “If you’re not putting the work behind it, if you’re not putting the faith behind it, it’s not going to happen. You have to want it,” she details about how she turns goals into reality. As for what keeps this talent looking on the bright side in a career where it’s easy to become overwhelmed, she has this piece of advice: “When you start doing it for the love of it—and not for the work part of it—it doesn’t feel hard.”

TRUE BLUE “When I got the script for Season 2 of All The Queen’s Men…’Blue’ is going through all these emotional changes and you see a softer side—a vulnerable ‘Blue.’ I really like that.” upscalemagazine.com

THANKSGIVING CULINARY VIBES JAMES BEARD AWARD-WINNING EXECUTIVE CHEF MASHAMA BAILEY OFFERS INSPIRATION IN A CELEBRATION OF THE TRINITY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE FEATURING TRADITION, FAMILY, AND FOOD WO RDS BY ANNITA ST OKES T H OMAS

Thanksgiving was lit! Everyone was there, my family and my cousins with their children! Dinner was at my grandmother’s house, where she would decorate, play music, and cook for three days! She really loved the holidays,” reminisces Mashama Bailey, award-winning executive chef and partner of The Grey restaurant in Savannah, Georgia, and Diner Bar at the Thompson Hotel in Austin, Texas. She knows all about holiday gatherings, especially Thanksgiving which features tradition, family, and food that is The Trinity of celebrations in African American culture. For her, food is love, served through family recipes passed from generation to generation, with each dish prepared to taste exactly as remembered. Chef Mashama credits her mom for inspiring her to cook. However, her grandmother Margaret Bailey created a deep interest in and love of food. “She always talked about food; she loved it, celebrated it, and showed love that way,” says Mashama who lived with her grandmother for several years.

At her home, one would find a well-stocked kitchen with exciting things you would not usually see like Mango Chutney or Mint Jelly for her lamb. This was an everyday occurrence. Young Mashama noted her grandmother’s love of flavor, salt, sugar, and a collection of spices. These were not the usual condiments and ingredients you would expect in the home of an 85-year-old. However, they were perfect to create a lasting impression on a future rockstar chef. While living with her, Chef Mashama started cooking to her grandmother’s taste, using the ingredients and spices stocked in the cupboards and refrigerator. At first, she would assist with meals. Later, she prepared the meals from start to finish, including trips to the supermarket shopping for ingredients. Her grandmother would ask, “What are you cooking tonight?” While they sat talking and eating each evening, little did they know the conversations planted a seed of curiosity and interest in cooking. Her road to excellence didn’t start with her first dish of sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving dinner. Her Mom worked and went to upscalemagazine.com

school yet kept the fridge stocked with ham and cheese, fruit, and English muffins – easy fixings for a quick meal after school. As a young teen, she prepared afternoon snacks for her siblings. Mashama credits this early responsibility of nurturing her younger sister and brother as influencing her idea of serving and caring for people. Growing up in New York, her day-to-day life included simple meals for her family of five – soup and sandwiches, baked chicken, pork chops and rice, and meatloaf. Sunday dinners were more elaborate when her Mom cooked things like fried chicken, sweet potatoes, cabbage, and rice. Mashama’s Dad had a culinary trick or two as well, and his ground beef and pork-n-beans over rice was a crowd pleaser. Chef Bailey’s life is a full-circle story. She spent family visits to Waynesboro, GA, learning to appreciate Southern lifestyle and yearning to return. The Grey Restaurant, once a segregated Greyhound bus station, provided that opportunity. Her partner, John O. Morisano, saw the building and knew he had to make something special. The idea of a restaurant needed a chef to bring the flavors of the South to life. In his search, he was introduced to Mashama 46

by Prune restaurant owner Gabrielle Hamilton. She accepted the call to join John O on an adventure, ready to move back to the South, bringing authentic Southern ingredients and food preparation to light. In their eight years of serving delicious Southern foods with a touch of European flavors, the two have created an award-winning restaurant. And the young girl sitting at her grandmother’s table talking about food and cooking with cool spices has won two James Beard Awards. She received the commendation in 2019 as the Best Chef in the Southeast and in 2022 as an Outstanding Chef. During her 2022 speech, she said, “Today, a little Black girl or a little Black boy can see themselves as a future outstanding chef. They can see themselves in a space they have never seen before and do what they could not think is possible. Until just a few minutes ago, that was me.” Imagine her Grandmother Margaret smiling down on all of her success. Maybe she would whisper, “Those who cook the meal put love in it, and those who eat and enjoy it show their love with each bite.”

At the same time, you can pause and appreciate those longstanding monuments, parks and ancient forts as you head deeper into the city. The neighborhoods of Santo Domingo certainly have their own distinct character – probably no more so than its original area of five hundred years past - the Zona Colonial, or Colonial Zone. This district of about eleven by eleven blocks and defined by its narrow cobbled streets is one of the oldest you can walk and explore anywhere in the Americas, almost a huge outdoor museum of past and present Dominican history and culture in itself. Bring an area map, or do your local research ahead, and you can fit in some amazing walkabouts over two or three days that take you into squares, inner courtyards, fortresses, and smaller museums with an unusual story to tell. The early or final months of the year are usually the ideal time to spend time around Santo Domingo, but after nightfall when the after-hours spirit of the city truly comes alive, there is always an excellent chance to savor what the wider urban landscape reveals here. THE SOUND AND RHYTHM EXPERIENCE – MERENGUE, JAZZ AND ALL THAT MOVES YOU Rhythm, harmony and Dominican musical tradition are all at the center of this island nation’s identity – past, present, and still emerging. This whole dimension of Dominican life is also present at any time to access and experience – from the outdoor street event to the concert venue to the nightclub world, or just musicians playing their specialty in a nearby square. Certainly one defining musical style to connect with around Santo Domingo is the merengue. Actually, more than a style – also a cultural connection point for locals, 50

guests, and anyone who also wants to listen, watch, and maybe even learn its movements. Merengue also has its own late spring annual event each year along the long seafront of the Malecon. Over in the Zona Colonial, you can listen on a weekend evening to the outdoor presentations of Grupo Bonyé playing in the Ruins of San Francisco. Their repertoire includes over 300 songs, including boleros, guaracha, montuno, traditional son, salsa, and merengue, in addition to some of the best of Afro-Antillean music. Other musical styles you might find locally include bachata, which originated in string bolero, then became popularized and evolved over fifty years to a present fusion of styles to become a very modern genre nowadays. Permanent homes to Dominican music styles abound across the city – but if you base yourself in the Colonial Zone or neighborhoods with larger hotels that have onsite entertainment or are close to nightclubs, you can usually access some of this contemporary and legacy Dominican music world. Some recommends of reliable and interesting spaces from the Zona Colonial: Sabina Bar (206 Clle. Isabel la Catolica), named after the composer/ singer Joaquín Sabina, this restaurant also presents fine background tracks or live musical performances by talented artists; or the Hasta La Tambora Lounge (Clle. La Atarazana 1), a multi-dimensional space dedicated to merengue both live, recorded and on display. GOING DEEP INTO THE SMALL MUSEUM WORLD – DIVERSE LEGACIES, SUPERB COLLECTIONS Santo Domingo is certainly an urban environment where old and new worlds converge and produce a neighborhood that becomes a brilliant reflection of past and present. Nowhere is that more true than in the historic heart of the capital, its Colonial Zone or Zona Colonial. Here in a neighborhood measuring just some eleven blocks in length and width, you find yourself in a wide living museum that is home to small and medium sized displays of what provided and still provides meaningful sustenance to the Dominican people. The diversity, dediction and dynamic imagination that goes into the curation of this wide-ranging world of the small museum in this city is a gift in itself you can take away from any of these: • The Museo de las Atarazanas ( Colon 4) This museum space and concept is something unusual and powerful in what you encounter – the artefacts of life, commerce and centuries past recovered from the ocean depths along the The Museo de las Atarazanas country’s coastlines. Showcases display everything from domestic tools, weapons, jewelry, decorative items – all diligently restored from shipwrecks or the sea floor. A holographic theater section brings alive the moments of underwater discovery in modern years of the country’s dedicated preservationists. The museum is in one of the colonial buildings that give monumental value to its historic center, a sixteenth-century shipyards.

New York Fashion Week is back and better than ever, bringing renowned designer names and their latest Spring/Summer 2023 collections to the Big Apple. Twice a year, American designers show off their latest work down the runways of NYFW and the who’s who of fashion descend on Manhattan to observe. From fashion editors to celebrities to style tastemakers, each attend to seek out the trends to come. This year some household names such as Thomas Browne and Tom Ford were surprisingly missing from the Fashion Week schedule. However, this left room for up-and-coming designers to grace runways with a fresh perspective. Organizations like the NYFW BLK and The Lab NYFW helped fill this missing link providing Black and Brown designers with their rightful platform. Brands like Harlem Fashion Row kicked off NYFW with its 15th anniversary Fashion Show and Style Awards, featuring a stacked guest list — Veronica Webb, April Walker, Bergdorf Goodman's Linda Fargo and Dapper Dan were all in attendance, among many others.

showing in The Prince George Ballroom with a grandiose display of luxurious florals covering the entryway. A unique soundtrack gave off a distinct flair, as supermodel Nyayop. t and Miss Universe Saint Lucia 2022, Sheris Paul, graced the runway. It was a lovely gesture. Overall, her runway show was eccentric and daring yet exactly what we had hoped to see from Yvette Crocker: an offering for the viewer to make up their own assumption on what was being presented and how you could (or would) wear it.

BLACK & BROWN DESIGNERS Yvette Crocker was another surprise guest at Fashion Week, this time at her namesake brand's show where she sent out looks inspired by her fashion illustrations: kimonos with fine art artworks, silver leggings, sheer capes, bold prints and her stunning eyewear, a look she made her signature and one that still endures today.

Elier Aubret To describe Elier Aubret show in one word: ethereal. His collection evokes the ease and beauty found in the majestic nature around us. His use of hues is like watercolors, subtle yet impactful when layered, especially when the hand-sculpted organza cascades down the body of the dress. One is reminded of the scent of blooming flowers, the tinkling sound of running water, and how it feels to see the first sun-dappled leaves of spring. Aubret is a master at shape and volume, and translating his Puerto Rican roots into something even more intriguing. With numerous runway shows under his belt, designer Elier Aubret’s vision becomes more and more crystallized with each season.

Enjeanous Jewels Enjeanous Jewels second presentation for New York Fashion Week was a part of this year’s NYFW BLK Prêt–à–porter. Titled “Nature is Healing,” Enjeanous Jewels SS23 was inspired by the collective rush to heal and return to normalcy after a tumultuous 2020. As suggested by the title of her presentation, there were plenty of “jewels” inspired by the beauty of nature. Earthtoned colors were prominent throughout the entire collection and well complemented by colorful corsets and kimonos. Along with featuring several emergent models, Sheris Paul, Miss Universe Saint Lucia 2022, and international model Avika Hodge graced the runway. It’s clear that her presence brings a fresh and needed perspective to innovation at New York Fashion Week.

MuseKloset Ryan Barker (Mr. Muse), the designer behind MuseKloset, is not a new kid in town. He’s been at it for a while, designing his own line, and mastering a signature aesthetic that has garnered a great deal of clientele such as LaTavia Roberson of Destiny’s Child, Aaron Carter to Malorie Bailey from RHOA, Azealia Banks, Cynthia Bailey, and More! The show opened with a moment of silence for the late and great André Leon Talley, who was one of Barker’s champions. MuseKloset is a luxury womenswear brand in “pursuit of the unsuit”. The collection focuses on “reframing and redefining the new standard of luxury, and letting the clothes speak for themselves,” Barker says.

URBAN DESIGN Modern Cut & Beard Goals Gentlemen, it’s time to elevate your look for the new season. While precision cuts and perfectly groomed beards continue to command attention—it’s how you add creativity to the mix that’ll set you apart. Take inspiration with these artistic looks from Andis Company’s Fluid Collection and get ready to make a real entrance.

1 CITY PROFILE A straight front hairline on a wavy brush cut paired with a full beard is a study in contrasts and pays homage to trends spotted in the great city of Philadelphia. This look, dubbed the “Classic Philly,” works in tandem with the different curl patterns on the model’s head and beard (predominately a curly, medium texture and pattern as well as a deep wavy coarse texture and “S” wave pattern). Andis Master Cordless Clipper-Silver #12470 and Andis Slimline Pro GTX Trimmer #32690 are the tools used to create the cut’s sleek silhouette. Likewise, the clipper-over-comb technique helps keep the fade area transitions at the temples and nape seamless. The beard is freehand trimmed into the desired shape, playing up its fullness to perfection.

ABOUT BUSINESS The “1921 Fade,” from Andis’ Fluid collection, is a nod to Black Wall Street and signals how creativity can work for today’s man in the business arena. Here curly medium-textured hair, with a medium curl pattern, is shaped into a disconnected fade detailed with precisely parted cornrows at the crown. The bald fade complements the braided lengths while the flawless lines along the sideburns move effortlessly into the close-cut beard.

DETAIL WORK: Precision is everything with this style. Make it happen by outlining the temple areas on both sides of the head using the full blade on the Andis Cordless T-Outliner Li Trimmer #74000.

AMERICAN ICON This look, called the “Modern Day Frederick Douglass,” takes its cue from the historic 1800s abolitionist whose hair can best be described as a free-flowing Afro. Here, the contemporary style features plush curls along with faded temples and nape. It’s a cut crafted on dense hair featuring two hair patterns: a predominately repetitive large, soft curl pattern and some deep wavy coarse texture (with a noticeable “S” wave pattern). What makes this profile 21st century modern? The details are key, like the shaping of the hairline and how the sculpted, curly Afro neatly transitions between the temple areas and the combed-out beard. And, of course, the tools used to craft the look are indispensable: the Slimline Pro Li Trimmer-Black and the Cordless Envy Li Clipper-Black—both part of the Andis Cordless Fade Combo.

DETAIL WORK: When freehand trimming the sides to clip away loose hair, work against a contrasting background color to help see stray hairs better.

VOICE OF FIRE PATRICK RIDDICK IS ONE OF GOSPEL MUSIC’S RENAISSANCE MEN. BY YANNASON DUNCAN

Hailing from the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, his ensemble - D’vyne Worship - is a powerhouse 50+ voice chorale that embodies the best of the choir tradition. Under the leadership of Patrick Riddick – who is also assistant choral director for the one and only Ricky Dillard and New G – the choir is energetic, precise and captivating. Immersed in chorale excellence as a leader, teacher and director, Riddick has served as the VA 2nd Jurisdiction State Minister of Music COGIC, VA 2nd Jurisdiction’s AIM Vice-Chairman, Quorum of Directors for the International Music Department COGIC, Department Cantor for the International Department of Evang elism COGIC and Music Coordinator for International Men’s Department COGIC. He also holds a seat on the Contemporary Adult Division Board of GMWA. Patrick Riddick first became involved in music ministry when he was just 10 years old. He continues to fulfill the musical calling on his life at his home church – New Jerusalem COGIC – where he is executive pastor and minister of music, as well as New Beech Grove Baptist Church where he is choir director. His foray into music started with playing the organ. In 1990, he saw Dillard directing the PBS special Going Home to Gospel with Patti Labelle and immediately became fascinated by directing – eventually making that his focus and dropping the organ altogether. Today, Riddick is one of the top choirmasters in the Gospel music industry with two albums and multiple award nominations under his belt. As he readies a third album, Riddick recently released a new single on Grammy winner Hezekiah Walker’s HezHouse Entertainment labor. The single, “Jesus is With Me”, is what Walker calls a “feel-good Gospel song that you can’t help but get up and sing along to.” In 2020, Riddick expanded his ministry to streaming when he helped superstar Pharrell Williams “return to his church roots” as choir director for Voices of Fire, which aired on Netflix. There, he worked with Williams to assemble a 75-member choir. “Gospel music is happy music,” says Riddick. “I gauge if something is good by whether or not it makes me smile on the inside. As a choir, when we sing and we know that we have that right song, something happens within us that just creates joy. Then, I know that people who listen to the music will feel joy too – and that is my goal.”

HOW AM I DOING? NBA PSYCHOTHERAPIST DR. COREY YEAGER’S NEW BOOK AIMS TO HELP INDIVIDUALS CULTIVATE A BETTER SENSE OF AWARENESS. BY UTAMU BELLE

It is believed that self-inflection is one of the first steps to take on the journey to becoming a better version of you. In his new book, How Am I Doing?: 40 Conversations to Have With Yourself (Harper Celebrate), Dr. Corey Yeager gives insight into how you can become more self-conscious in order to make better life choices. Dr. Yeager is an NBA psychotherapist who works with the Detroit Pistons. He has been featured in the Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry television series, The Me You Can’t See, and works on developing African American communities. Why do you serve the African American community primarily? My upbringing was rooted in a small, yet tight-knit African American community. I grew up next door to my grandparents. This close proximity to such loving and wise people served me well, and being a Black man in America, I know I’m going to encounter tons of negative spaces. I’m not going to add to that with negative talk. You can change how the conversation goes by starting with how you talk to yourself. Tell us about your work with the Detroit Pistons? I don’t wear a suit and I don’t approach anyone from on high. I just show up and show them I’m present. The players know they can call me anytime day or night. You’ll often hear me chatting with the players. “How you livin’? You good?”

Why do you work to advance the dialogue of racism? I want to help bring positive change to individuals and society. Tell us about your upcoming book. I am overwhelmingly excited about my book which focuses on the most important person in this world…YOU! I break down the larger question, “How am I doing?” into 40 smaller questions. Your number one goal should be to cultivate a better sense of awareness—curious of who you are and how you got there. Only then you can start intentionally making better choices. Why was it important to share your own story? I wanted to walk the self-discovery journey with my readers. I thought it was important to share my struggles and experiences. You appeared in the series, The Me You Can’t See. How important was it to have an empathic approach? Empathy is essential. People want to feel understood. The more empathy I show to my patients, the more open they are which open doors for growth. Are you working on any future projects? I am very proud of my work with the Office of Black Male Student Achievement, which is part of the Minneapolis Public School system. This program focuses on supporting Black males as they pursue their educational endeavors.

AUTHENTIC EXPRESSION BY UTAMU BELLE

When Harper Watters was gifted a pair of high heels, it was the start of becoming a viral sensation. He would become the first Black queer, First Soloist and the highest-ranked Black dancer at the Houston Ballet. “I moved to Texas to pursue classical ballet at 16. If you would have told me that 14 years later at a gas station, I’d get asked, ‘Are you the ballet dancer on TikTok who runs on a treadmill in heels?’ I would have laughed in your face,” he says. Ever since that viral video a few years ago, Watters has been dancing his way into international fashion campaigns and dream ballets. Upscale Magazine spoke with Watters about his wins.

What’s the story behind your signature high-heeled videos? The heels were a gift from one of my best friends in the company. As a sort of test run, I jokingly put them on and strutted on the treadmill.

How do you feel about these achievements? It’s an incredible honor and privilege, a testament to my hard work, and to the people who supported and inspired me throughout my career.

How has life changed since your first viral video? It has given me a platform to work and connect with people I would have never dreamed of. It also taught me to trust and own every aspect of who I am.

Has this always been your dream? From the day I saw the Destiny’s Child “Survivor” music video, I knew entertainment or performance was going to be my career.

How are you utilizing your platform in a meaningful way? I try to share my life honestly and authentically, the things I’m proud of and believe in, the stories and moments I feel deserve light.

How has your first successful season been thus far? The 2022/2023 season will be my first complete season as a First Soloist. I was promoted in December 2021 and in March of 2022, I completed my first Principal role of a 3 Act Ballet. This season I hope to continue that momentum and tackle even more challenging yet rewarding roles.

Any advice for young people afraid of pursuing their dreams? I would turn them to Beyoncé’s “I Was Here”. ‘When I leave this world, I’ll leave no regrets, leave something to remember, so they won’t forget.’ I was here.”

What challenges have you experienced on your journey? Telling myself I can be a prince, even though there’s never been a prince who’s looked like me in fairytales, will always be a challenge for me. How have you redefined the world of classical ballet? I’ve proven that I belong and I’m part of it.

THE DEMARCATION OF AFRICA BY YANNASON DUNCAN

THE NAMING OF COUNTRIES and borders within the continent of Africa took place centuries ago by the Europeans, Germans, and French without the involvement of any leader or politician coming out of Africa in the 18th century. The implications have left a margalinised historic political, societal, and humanitarian impact on the people of Africa and how they have been accepted by many in our world today. It is a critical piece of history which is foreign to many but at the same time critical for empowerment and development of the lives of our African brothers and sisters since it has impacted them the most. The Berlin conference, which was held from November 15, 1884 and concluded in February 26, 1885, sought to maliciously and intentionally sideline the involvement of any African leader or politician of the demarcation and the naming of African countries by those European and American leaders for their own gain. The result of their actions is responsible for many of the continuing conflicts on the African continent. One African scholar remarked that there would never be any reparation of land, legacy, or the restoration of human dignity because of the damage that was done by not consulting or engaging the involvement of African leaders in the naming and division of the African borders. What was behind that move, many sought clarity, but was not given any bonafide answers.
