Karol’s Korner

One of my New Years resolutions (I hate to call them that!) was to start a memory jar and update it every week with something good that happened to me that week. Occasionally it has felt quite challenging! Sometimes its easy to get stuck in a rut and see things from a negative viewpoint! However one of the things it makes me do is actually reflect on the positive part of life and not get bogged down in the negativity. Even if that achievement was something like getting myself out walking or making a lovely home cooked meal. With all the emphasis on Mental Health nowadays its so important to take care of ourselves, a little treat here or there or time to relax! So thinking about nurturing ourselves what are you planning to do for Mothers Day 2020? How about a little self love and giving ourselves “a break” from everyday life? That could be a relaxing cup of tea with the short story in the magazine, or a hair do, or having your nails done, or even a meal out with your friends! For a real splash how about a spa day? Whatever you do, remember that if you don’t look after yourself you cant expect to keep running on empty! Take care of you!

Horoscopes by Russell Grant ARIES

LEO

March 21st - April 20th

24th - August 23rd

Flattery will get you nowhere as March gets off the starting blocks. When talking with an employer or other professionals, it's best to be honest, even if it means challenging their ideas. A stimulating conversation on the 4th marks the beginning of a fruitful friendship. Your moneymaking potential soars on the 5th so use this opportunity to enjoy more creature comforts.

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Don't make an enemy out of a respected expert on the 3rd; it's important to stay in this professional's good books. A unique piece of clothing or jewellery is worth purchasing on the 8th; you'll cherish this item for years. On the 9th, the Full Moon could prompt you to abandon an unrewarding romance or creative project.

You'll have to rethink the terms of a partnership on the 4th; be as flexible as possible. This relationship is worth preserving. A n intriguing opportunity will come your way on the 5th; you're the perfect person for this energising new role. Presenting something beautiful and unusual to the public will get an enthusiastic reception on the 8th; this is no time to copy old formulas.

VIRGO August 24th - Sept 23rd An old health issue could flare up at the start of March; don't put medical matters on a back burner. Getting a professional opinion will be helpful. A loving partnership gives you the courage to take a creative risk on the 8th. The Full Moon on the 9th urges you to forgive someone who hurt you long ago; holding this grudge is robbing you of inner peace and happiness.

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - Dec 21st Avoid social media like the plague at the start of March; it's easy to make sarcastic jokes that you will come to regret in times to come. Spending time with family will be deeply satisfying on the 8th. It will also be good for attending a reunion or meeting with a favourite relative. On the 9th, the Full Moon will prompt you to take responsibility for someone else's mistakes.

CAPRICORN December 22nd - Jan 20th Don't be too hard on a relative at the start of March; just because you don't agree with their choices doesn't mean you should criticise them. It may be necessary to return an expensive item that you purchase on the 4th; so best to hang on to your receipts. Falling in love at first sight is a distinct possibility on the 8th. If you are already in a relationship, arrange a lovely surprise for your partner.

GEMINI

LIBRA

AQUARIUS

May 22nd - June 21st

September 24th - Oct 23rd

January 21st - Feb 19th

It will be necessary to cancel a trip or make alternative travel arrangements on the 4th; try to be flexible. The 8th is ideal for showcasing your creative work. Submit an article for publication, display your paintings at a gallery or upload some musical contributions to social media. On the 9th, a challenged Full Moon could bring a secret to light.

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd Don't let a morose friend or romantic partner steal your sunshine on the 3rd. By maintaining a positive attitude, you'll attract some lucky opportunities. Planning a relaxing vacation at a seaside location would be a good idea around the 8th; you'll enjoy some time away from your usual surroundings. The Full Moon on the 9th could trigger an argument.

Don't let friends or family intimidate your romantic partner on the 3rd; it's important to side with your lover. It will be necessary to rethink a creative project on the 4th; try not to grumble too much. Money from a dividend, partnership or other type of financial settlement will arrive on the 5th, allowing you to indulge your love of creature comforts.

SCORPIO October 24th - Nov 22nd You'll be prompted to change the way you deal with a stubborn relative as March gets underway; old ways and means simply aren't working any longer. Love is in the air on the 5th; this is a great time to find a partner or enjoy a rendezvous with your amour. A surprise gift makes your heart sing on the 8th; it's nice to know you are held in such high regard.

It will be difficult to get your message across on the 4th; wait until the middle of the month to make an important request. Domestic pursuits bring tremendous pleasure on the 5th; this is a great time to add some decorative touches to your home. Hosting a family reunion could also be on the cards. The Full Moon on the 9th might shed light on a financial shortage so be ready to juggle your budget.

PISCES Feb 20th - March 20th Avoid spending money at the start of the month; they really won't bring much pleasure. Your personal power will be at an all-time high on the 8th so take this opportunity to ask for favours and promote your interests. On the 9th, the Full Moon will cause you to look at a relationship in a whole new light. Stop putting your romantic partner on a pedestal; it isn't helping your union.

Just tackle one room at a time, and get organised in advance with some boxes and bags, so that you can designate things quickly and easily as rubbish, recycling, charity shop, to sell, and so on. • Gather your tools – brooms, scrubbing brushes, buckets and cloths – and cleaning products. You could make your own natural cleaners using online ‘recipes’. growing. You can grow cucumbers from seed, but the seeds are generally extremely pricey and not the easiest to germinate, so speed things up with a couple of chunky plants instead. For growing in the garden choose ‘ridge’ cucumbers, as these perform better outside.

Easy Veg Growing

Continued on page 22

This is a perfect time to get to grips with some ‘Grow Your Own’ and make growing your own vegetables easier than you might think! Start by deciding on what you’d like to eat, picked fresh from your garden over the coming year. Think salads, herbs and classic main meal vegetables because there is still time to grow just about anything you please. Some vegetables are best grown from seed – the classics are carrots; with those long, ¿HVK\ URRWV WKH\ VLPSO\ KDWH being transplanted, so grab a packet of seed and as soon as the soil is not too wet sow a row or two. You can always choose interestingly coloured varieties such as ‘Purple Haze’ or ‘Purple Dragon’ if you want to ring the changes or persuade a less-than-eager family member to give carrots another chance. Salad leaves cost a fortune when sold in packets and are 20

often none too fresh, so sow a few rows or pots of these too and within a few weeks they’ll be growing strongly enough IRU \RX WR KDUYHVW \RXU ¾UVW delicious meal. If you make small sowings every two weeks or so you can ensure a pretty well continuous supply of salad throughout the summer and well into autumn. If you’ve got a warm, sunny spot in your garden, or, better still, a greenhouse or frame, WKHQ LWµV GH¾QLWHO\ ZRUWK JHWWLQJ some tomatoes. These too can be raised from seed but if you’re only after a few plants, and especially if you’d like to have a few different varieties, then it’s often better value (and a lot easier) to buy yourself some small gardenready plants. Make sure you get the right sort for the accommodation you’ve got to offer – catalogues or labels should clearly state if they’re for ‘greenhouse’ or ‘outdoor’

If time is short then vegetable plants are a great choice for most crops. You can send off for them now and then you’ve no need to do time-consuming potting on and pricking out. Get them in quantities to suit the size of your plot, and if they come in quantities too large for the space you have available, then share a pack or two with friends and save some cash too! Check what size of plant you’re buying if you choose mail order and go for gardenready sizes if possible – that way you’ll be able to plant them out straight away, or at most grow them on in pots for a couple of weeks. If you send off for vegetable plants make sure you unwrap them the moment they arrive; left in the packaging they’ll soon deteriorate. If you can’t plant them straight away, do so as soon as possible, but water the compost if necessary and pot each root ball into some compost after removing the packaging. At this time of year there is often a lot of rain and wet weather so the soil is really wet. Try covering the soil

with a polythene sheet or a polythene covered pull-out tunnel for a couple of weeks before your plants are due to arrive, then remove it just before planting out. Similarly, if you are sowing your vegetables from seed then the soil may be too wet for the seed to germinate and they may rot instead. By covering the area where you want to sow, you keep off excessive rain and allow the soil to warm up a little beforehand. When small plants arrive or if you buy them from garden centres and local nurseries they can often still be a little

“Seatbelts on!â€? he said cordially. “Before the car starts beeping.â€? “Very wise,â€? the lady said. “It really is most annoying.â€? “I’ll get my man to look at it,â€? he said, and pulled away. “Though I imagine it will be FRVWO\ WR ž[ :KHUH DUH ZH heading?â€? “I live at the end of Barrow Common,â€? she said. “Do you know it?â€?

The Runaround Excuse me, is this your car? Barron asked the silver-haired lady leaving the opticians laden with a large parcel. “It just so happens that I’m looking for a reliable runaround for my daughter. “Lucky girl! The lady smiled warmly, putting the parcel on the back seat. “Would you like to have a look at it at some time? Barron had been strolling down the high street when he noticed the ‘For Sale’ sign taped to the bonnet. He’d bought and sold enough motors to know the asking price was a fraction of what this car was worth. “How about now? He didn’t actually have a daughter but knew all the tricks to get his hands on a bargain. “Is there anything wrong with it? he asked suspiciously. The car seemed immaculate inside and out. “I have to be honest, the lady grimaced, “it does have one very annoying fault. It makes a dreadful beeping sound 28

when I’m driving, she said apologetically.

²,¾P VXUH , FDQ žQG LW ³ %DUURQ said. The ten-minute drive was most enjoyable as he contemplated how he was going to knock a few more pounds off the asking price.

“Have you taken it back to the dealership? He frowned.

“What do you think? the lady asked, as they pulled up outside her house. “Would she like it?

“They said there’s nothing wrong with it. She shrugged. “They said the only way to stop it beeping is to put my seatbelt on.

Barron was about to agree that his imaginary daughter would like it, when he noticed a young man coming out of the house.

Barron rubbed his chin. “I might be willing to overlook it if the price is right.

“Mum you’ve done it again, haven’t you? the man said. “You can’t keep conning people into driving you home.

“Perhaps a test drive would help? she suggested optimistically. “Are you free now? Barron pounced. “How about I drive you home and we can go over the paperwork? “I suppose so! The lady seemed surprised. “If you’re genuinely interested? “Perfect! Indeed it did seem almost too perfect. With a great display of chivalry, Barron helped the lady into the passenger seat. He adjusted the mirror and turned on the ignition. The engine purred like a kitten.

“But I’ve taken my driving glasses in for repair, the lady said, retrieving her parcel from the back seat. “How else was I going to get this home? “What? Barron was taken aback. “So isn’t the car for sale after all? “Sorry mate, the man said, “she’s given you the runaround. “Thank you for the lift, very kind. She smiled. “There’s a bus stop just up the road. By Jackie Brewster

Top Tips for Verruca Treatment Gruesome, miserable, nasty, painful – common words used when people describe their verruca. A verruca is a wart which LV JURZLQJ RQ \RXU IRRW ° RIžFLDOO\ termed a ‘plantar wart’ – and it’s caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). The HPV virus lives happily for ORQJ SHULRGV RQ GDPS ÂżRRUV VXFK as those around swimming pools or communal showers. The virus enters the skin and then travels into the deeper layers. It causes keratinisation – keratin is the hard protein in hair, skin and nails – which is why warts feel hard to the touch. Although 80% of verrucas regress spontaneously over two years, they can be persistent and resist treatment. The virus is adept at escaping detection by your body’s immune system. Diagnosis A verruca is a single, slightly raised patch anywhere on the sole of the foot. The skin may be pale, yellowy/skin-coloured or have a cobblestoned appearance, sometimes with some central black dots. Verrucas are sometimes painful when pressure is applied, for example when you walk or if you VTXHH]H WKHP EHWZHHQ žQJHU DQG thumb. 32

Management without treatment 7KH žUVW VWHS LV WR WDNH JRRG care of your foot/feet so that you minimise pain and avoid spreading the virus, both on your own feet and to others. The British Association of Dermatologists has a useful guide available at tiny. cc/foot-care. If you’re generally healthy and not in pain, it’s worth doing nothing as most veruccas will disappear spontaneously. However, you should seek medical help if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system e.g. HIV infection, chemotherapy, radiotherapy etc. Active treatments If you decide that your verucca can’t just be left to recover by itself, there are forty-one recognised wart treatments. First Choice Treatment: Salicylic Acid (SA) SA kills off the outer skin layers, causing them to peel away. It also helps the immune system detect the virus. SA has proven to be more effective for veruccas than a placebo (dummy) treatment (Cochrane Review 2012) e.g. in one study, 49% of verrucas had disappeared after treatment with SA compared to 23% using a placebo.

Second Choice Treatments These are not routinely offered on the NHS. • Cryotherapy: a liquid nitrogen spray freezes and destroys infected skin cells. Clearance rates of around 65% are reported. It’s sometimes painful, and there’s also a 30% chance of recurrence. The Cochrane 2012 review concluded that cryotherapy was no better than SA at treating verrucas, was painful, and caused blistering and scarring. • Other local options: many other agents have been used such as silver nitrate, Cantharidin, phenol, glycolic acid, pyruvic acid and trichloroacetic acid (TCA). • Surgical removal: surgery is not usually advised because verrucas often recur afterwards. • SWIFT is a new microwave treatment for the verruca. It’s quick, relatively painless and seems to be effective on stubborn verrucas. See www. treatwithswift.com. • Laser therapy aims to destroy the blood vessels supplying the verruca, plus the heat causes local tissue damage. 80% clearance rates have been reported. • Immunotherapy: various treatments claim to stimulate the antibody response to speed up viral destruction. Where to Obtain Verruca Treatments From 1st April 2019, the NHS has listed verrucas as one of the seventeen treatments it will no longer provide, so these are the options other than your GP. • Visit your local Community Pharmacy • Find a Podiatrist: cop.org. I recently had to request some new make-up brushes as my eight year old son broke mine applying (as he puts it) Goth makeup. Love Food & Lose Weight Before Ellie lost the weight she couldn’t run after her son, she was out of breath. She would sit in front of the telly and eat junk food. She was fed up; unhappy with the way she looked. She didn’t do any exercise other than at work as a waitress. When it was busy at work she would get out of breath easily. She has diabetes that runs in her family and was getting concerned she would get type 2 diabetes. She lacked confidence she hated talking in front of everyone but always put on a brave face. So she decided in January 2016 she would join a Slimming World group as she knew she had gotten bigger over the last 6 months, nothing fitted her she felt big especially when she had to ask her manager for a bigger top as a size 20 didn’t fit. Having just moved she wanted a new beginning. She went onto the Slimming World website and found her local group which her mum had joined the week before. Before joining slimming world she would eat when she could and it would of been more of a grab on the way out to work which would be general junk food. she would tend to have a meal at work which would be anything involving chips and a desert. When working late she would have microwave meals or grab a takeaway on the way home. she rarely cooked meals if it was it would be a jar of sauce no vegetables involved. Now her eating habits have changed she will have breakfast, lunch and tea but just eats when she is hungry. She loves that she can have a cooked breakfast everyday if she wants. She now takes a pack up breakfast and lunch when at work which could be overnight

and shouting to the world she has lost weight with Slimming World! she has made her eating habits a lifestyle so she can carry on food optimising for a lifetime. She feels amazing at target looking back makes her realise how far she has come. she doesn’t feel like that person she was back in January 2016. Her life has changed now She can run after her son and join in with him when out at the park and she can now fit through the small gaps! She has also changed her activity levels hitting every day 10,000 steps. she has recently completed the couch to 5k program. oats, fruit and yogurt or weetabix muffins. Her tea is now healthy adapted meals which could be beef lasagne, chips & salad or even a traditional roast. She has made such a difference to her life but the biggest change is having the confidence

Ellie who has lost 5 and a half stone now runs her own group Every Monday from 6:30pm at the Memorial Hall, Collingham. Call or Message Ellie 07983609316 follow her facebook page Slimming World with Ellie Gray.

Electric Vehicles:

ARE THEY SO GREEN? The car was designed to dissipate heat from an internal combustion engine running on fossil fuels. Made of metal construction with little insulation, certainly no double glazing with heating from the engine in the winter and air conditioning for the summer. Most will know this if you have ever sat in a car in the winter without the engine running; it soon gets cold. E-cars of any manufacture built this way are not electric vehicles (EV) but a car that has been electrified as a consequence of the manufacturer's supply chain being set up for this type of construction. Electric Vehicles on the other hand will eventually be constructed out of polymers, with insulation and most probably double glazed in order to keep the heat in in winter and cool in summer. This is because any heating or cooling drains the battery and reduces the available mileage. The new 'stress' now identified for drivers of electric cars is Range Anxiety, the stress of worrying about being able to get to the destination or home before the battery runs out. To avoid this stress the drivers 'top up' the battery at every opportunity and with as higher charge 42

current as possible, this is not conducive to extended battery life. Now, mobile phone users who do this soon start to notice that the usage per charge reduces electric cars are no different except that replacement batteries are very expensive around ÂŁ7000 -ÂŁ10,000, significantly reducing the second hand resale value. Electric cars are greener with no CO2 emissions... or are they? The assumption that electric cars do not produce CO2 whatsoever is just wrong. By 2030 European carmakers must have achieved average vehicle emissions of just 59 grams of CO2 per km, which corresponds to fuel consumption of 2.2 litres of diesel equivalent per 100 km (107 miles per gallon). This simply will not be possible, not withstanding the recent government announcement that the government intends to prohibit petrol and diesel sale from 2035. Currently electric cars emit a substantial amount of CO2 not from the car but from the gas/coal powered generating plant from which they are indirectly connected. Solar/wind power generation is only effective when the wind blows and the sun shines, coal or gas powered power

generators are required to supply the energy during the dark doldrums when green energy is not available. According to Hans-Werner Sinn, professor of economic research at the University of Munich, the Austrian thinktank Joanneum Research has published a large scale study has found that a mid sized electric car (in Germany – less in France) must drive 219,000 miles before it out performs a similar diesel car in CO2 emissions. Batteries will not last that long, nor will the electric car. Very large amounts fossil fuels are used to manufacture the lithium batteries in China. A report from Reuters, published a year or so ago, concluded that by 2040 (the original timetable) that the UK will have to generate some 50 Terrawatts of additional power in order the charge the 20 million electric cars. To bring this into prospective the average power station produces say 10GW (Gigawatts) of power and so 50 Terrawatts is the equivalent of

5,000 power stations, or 16million wind turbines. Solar farms produce a 500 KW/acre so you can work out that is over 1,000 million acres! Fantasy, it will never happen. Our government is closing coal fired power stations, whereas France has nuclear power stations with little or no CO2 emissions, and so the power outages are a real possibility although the distribution network thinks that it manageable. As the ownership of electric cars increases the numbers being 'plugged in' to charge increases and so does the probability of local power outages due to the heavy load and owners will be encouraged to constrain the charging period to overnight when there is less demand. The loss of fuel tax revenue from fossil fuels will no doubt be applied to the cost of electricity used to charge the car and network loading will be managed by area power reductions. Three Essentials for Dog-Proofing Your Home If you’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of your new dog, or are simply looking after someone else’s pooch for a while, it’s vital to make your home a safe environment. Dogs are naturally curious creatures and will root out food or other items that aren’t always healthy for them. So here are three must-dos to avoid an emergency visit to the vet. 1. Tidy up Dogs can’t tell the difference between items you’ve accidentally left lying around and the toys you intended them to play with. It’s important to

tidy up the clothes, papers, magazines and other paraphernalia that’s often strewn around the typical house, so your dog doesn’t chew or ingest anything harmful. 2. Use a safety gate Fixing a child safety gate keeps your dog safe and offers you peace of mind that they’re not getting up to mischief. You might choose the bottom of the stairs, for example, or across the hallway to give them access to the back or front of the house only. 3. Check cables and wires Dogs are renowned for chewing through cables and wires, so make sure any trailing or loose cables are tucked away out of sight, or use cable protectors for added safety.
