World Beard Day
There are very few things trendier than beards these days... but how much is too much? Tucked away in the Smithsonian is the mighty beard of old Hans Langseth - the longest beard in the world, which sits at just under 5 and a half metres long. According to legend, Langseth started growing his beard when he was just 19 years old to compete in a local beard-growing competition. Langseth, or "King Whiskers" as he was called, was a farmerturned-circus performer, with his great talent being... of course... his massive beard! He later died in North Dakota in 1927 - his final wish to have his beard "cut off and stored for posterity" (smithsonianmag.com). Nice one, Hans!
Did you know... AUGUST IS...
HAPPINESS HAPPENS MONTH! 7
Get the low down on the Aussie artists taking the stage at Winterfest!
Andy Bull The big night is almost upon us! Crowd favourite Andy Bull pulls into our very own Winterfest this August, hot off his Talk Too Much Tour. Andy Bull leads the pack of synth-driven dance music coming out of Australia, with his distinct style and recognisable angelic voice. The synth-pop singer-songwriter recently performed at St. Jerome's Laneway Festival 2015 and toured all the Australian capital cities to promote his latest album to sell-out shows. Andy Bull began performing in the early 2000's, although it was his second album, Sea Of Approval that skyrocketed this Sydney local to commercial and critical success. Sea Of Approval was nominated for three ARIA Awards, including Best Pop Release and Breakthrough Artist in 2014. With the release of this album, Andy has also landed three highly coveted spots in Triple J's Hottest 100 for his hits 'Baby I am Nobody Now', 'Keep on Running' and 'Talk Too Much'. Get ready to hear Andy Bull's smash hits at our very own Winterfest and bow to the king of synth-pop!
Slumberjack Here's one that you won’t want to miss! Perth electronic duo Slumberjack are quickly becoming one of the biggest acts in the country, with their debut EP reaching #2 on the iTunes electronic chart shortly after its release in November 2014. Known for their bassheavy beats and dancefloor fillers, Slumberjack will have you dancing like mad to their hits 'Horus', 'Body Cry' and 'The Others'. The young duo is made up of DJ/producers Morgan Then (a 23-year-old Borneo-bred classically trained pianist and former world-music artist) and Fletcher Elhers (21-year-old Perth native who taught himself to make electronic music at the age of 11). Slumberjack have had a massive year so far! This year alone, the boys led their own headline tour, toured around the country with Alison Wonderland on her massive Warehouse Party Project 2.0 Tour, and hit the Tiny Dancer stage at Splendour in the Grass last month. We've also heard that the boys will be part of the Holy Ship’s massive 2016 line-up, performing and sailing around the Bahamas alongside Kaskade, Dillon Francis, Steve Aoki and Peking Duk - one of our favourite past performers at UTS! These guys are killing it!
Two Stages at Winterfest
Just A Gent Just A Gent is the moniker of young Novocastrian electronic producer and DJ, Jacob Grant. You'll recognise him on stage by his suave-looking suit and top hat, as he mixes a wide range of instantly recognisable tunes. Just A Gent was one of the winners of Triple J's 2014 Listen Out competition and has received a stack of raving reviews ever since! At the young age of 17, he had already sold out his national tour, had an original track handpicked by Skrillex on his Selects compilation and a #1 on the highly acclaimed music blog aggregator Hype Machine. He continues to become a bigger and bigger star on the electro scene, as his music has already received support by industry heavyweights such as Diplo, Dillon Francis, What So Not, The Aston Shuffle and more! Jacob recently turned 18 and celebrated his adulthood with his Just Turned 18 Tour - what a ledge!
Oh baby, it is cold outside. So let's dance till we're warm! On Friday, 7 August, Winterfest will be hosting even more kickass artists in our two uni bars - The Underground and The Loft UTS. We'll be seeing Sydney DJ, producer and vocalist KLP (aka Kristy Lee Peters), Melbourne remix kings Indian Summer, Brisbane duo Odd Mob, Sydney solo project GRMM, Sydney DJ and producer Hatch, Sydney two piece Tear Council, Melbournebased multi-instrumentalist and producer Owen Rabbit, house duo Housing Corp, and local DJs Sooreyah and DJ Arthur. Phew! What a killer line-up! Entry into Winterfest is via Turner Lane (off Harris Street), with presale student tickets at only $20, or general admission tickets for $40. You can buy tickets at the ActivateHQ desk (UTS Building 1, Level 3) or online at: activateuts.com.au/winterfest15 Don't miss out! See you guys at Winterfest!

John Snow night Louis scrutinised the mountain from his seat upon a brilliant white stallion. With his suit of gleaming armour he resembled a second Sun breaking its dawn in the foothills. In truth it was very uncomfortable. For a moment, he contemplated returning to his village empty-handed. This idea was quickly dismissed - he had heard the tales and wished to be among them. Tales of men in shining steel freeing their people from tyranny - valiantly retaking a forsaken castle, seizing its contents and dispatching the wicked reptilian being within. He mounted once again his powerful steed and started up the mountain.
K
It took about forty minutes to reach the daunting facade atop the mountain. It was not a large castle but it was in an easily defensible position. Knight Louis wondered why he had not sighted the dragon. Nervously he drew his sword. His helmet began to irritate him and he removed it, only to recall the possibility of fiery death. He put it back on. Knight Louis stood stupidly just inside the castle’s huge door. He saw no piles of gold, no red menace and perhaps most disappointingly, no maidens. Sword in two hands he called out “I am Knight Louis, and I am here to-” He was interrupted by a shower of rubble as the dragon in question swooped down from the roof. It was huge in a way that his rudimentary education did not permit him to quantify and it looked him squarely in the eye.
“Slay me. You’re here to slay me, right?” “I...uh...that is correct! I am here to end your piteous life, creature.” “Oh you guys, always with the killing. So what’s the plan?” Knight Louis was suddenly conscious of his sword’s inadequacy. He looked at it just a moment too long. He was also thoroughly confused by essentially everything that had transpired so far, if he was honest. “You didn’t really think this through, did you.” “I thought it through well enough; I know your weakness, serpent!” “Weak patch below the ribs, right? Also I take offence to being called a serpent, those live in the sea.” “...y-yes. And...and I meant to cause offence!” “Sure. So here’s how it is, I breathe fire. See?” A lick of flame erupted from the dragon’s nostrils, melting a chandelier, which in turn dripped into a molten gold puddle on the floor. “...so I can roast you whenever I like. Also handy for cooking. So how about we forget the sword and come to an agreeable compromise.”
“I’m Xavier. Slay me?” it hissed.
Knight Louis feigned thought for a moment, and then, when the dragon least expected it, he struck! Lightning fast, he bolted towards the dragon, driving the sword into a solid wall of scales that produced a resonant ‘ping’ which echoed around the cavernous hall.
“Beg your pardon?”
The dragon looked pointedly at Knight Louis.
“...Imma pretend that didn’t happen, but if you do it again, I will eat you and use that sword as a toothpick. So I was actually thinking I could just fly away and you go back to your village or whatever and nobody has to be eaten.” Knight Louis was now feeling very stupid indeed, sword hanging limp. “That’s...huh I...well I can’t leave without my beloved!” “Your beloved? This week’s sacrifice?” “...yes”. “Yeah that’s what I thought. She’s like 14. And you weren’t right for each other.” “How did you…?”
“Yeah, well contrary to popular belief, dragons don’t know everything. Anyhow, I have a few conditions. I’ll need the sword too, and the horse because it’s lunchtime, and the last one’s very important, I need you to tell everyone about how you slew me valiantly and righteously and how the weak spot below the ribs totally works.” Knight Louis paused a moment, weighing his options. “I’ll give you the sword and the armour but no horse.” “And you’ll brag egregiously?” “What does that even mean?” “A lot.” “Yes. Yes I shall brag a lot...all shall know of my victory here today.”
“Excellent eyesight,” the dragon tapped the bridge of its scaled snout knowingly, “and common sense.” “...well, that’s true. But you thought death was preferable to marriage?!’ “Death?! What, no, I just dropped her off in a more enlightened part of the world.” “There are other parts of the world?” Knight Louis was dumbstruck. “Yes, with gender equality.” “Gender equality?” “It’s where men and wom- actually never mind, you probably won’t need to know.”. Knight Louis’ mind reeled. “Anyway you can’t have her because she’s not here. Maybe try the one that trains the horses, she’s a decent age and she always watches you when you joust.” Knight Louis took note of this and attempted to make sense of the situation.. “...why don’t you just roast me? What do you get out of flying away?” Xavier’s face lit up (literally, in some areas). “I thought you’d never ask! See, I collect armour, and I’d really prefer it undamaged. It’s more shiny that way and these talons aren’t much good for polishing. And that set you have is exquisite!” “So you’re saying I give you my armour and you cease terrorising my village.” “Terrorising?” “You burned down a mill and you kidnap our women weekly”. “I only wanted to help make the bread. And those women thanked me.” “...the bread isn’t made in the mill.”
“Deal.” The dragon offered its huge, taloned claw in agreement, destroying a table; It was awkwardly withdrawn, the dragon eyeing the table regretfully. Knight Louis removed his helmet. *** “Tell us again how you got it so clean?” hissed the tar dragon of the Northern Marshes. “It takes forever to get the charred flesh off the inside”. It looked sideways at its own recent treasure, a lovely silver set engraved with lillies, but fittingly, charred black on the inside. “I just told him I’d fly away if he handed it over.” “And he did?!” the tar dragon looked around at the other dragons incredulously. “Yeah, he just gave it to me. The whole thing”. “I’ll have to remember that one,” said the rock dragon in gravelly tones. None had tried to slay him that month - possibly due to his fearsome reputation, and the fact that as a god to the mountain people; they didn’t try to kill him but only brought him copious amounts of fruit. “Yours is pretty good too though,” said Xavier partially in way of consolidation to the tar dragon. Out of nowhere, a slimmer, blue dragon swooped into the valley and took his place atop a waterfall. He carried the shiniest and strangest set of armour any of them had ever seen, composed of interwoven plates. “Hey guys, sorry I’m late. Have you heard about Amazon?!”

"WELL THAT HIT THE SPOT"
We're just over halfway through winter, so thought it would be a great opportunity to provide some tips on healthy foods to utilise in your meals and snacks to get you through the last of the chilly period. We classify the below as superfoods as they'll provide you with the right nutrients to boost your immune systems to fight off a runny nose and other winter nasties! GREEN TEA Having a hot beverage is always a great idea in winter, but if that beverage is a green tea then you are in for a treat! Green tea is high in antioxidants and can also aid fat burning. There are flavoured options available as well as a decaffeinated version. Aim for 2 or 3 a day!
OATS Now here's your morning fibre hit! A serve of oats each day will easily provide you with the amount of soluble fibre that you need. This also helps reduce your blood cholesterol level. Try to avoid processed cereal grains or the instant varieties; it's a lot better to have the coarser version as oats have one of the lowest GI's (glycemic index) of all the grains - the mightiest of the grain family!
BROCCOLI Truly a superfood - you know what they say, "the brighter the vegetable, the better it is for you!" This beast of a food contains a high level of antioxidants, as well as a number of vitamins and minerals. Add this to as many of your vegetable dishes as you can!
EGGS Eggs are possibly the most versatile and nutritious food to eat. Not only do they provide us with numerous key nutrients that we require, but the fact that it can be cooked so many different ways makes it a superfood alone! From omelettes, to frittatas, to adding some hard boiled eggs to your wholegrain wraps - the options are endless.
DARK CHOCOLATE It's hard to avoid having a delicious, filling, guilty dessert at the best of times, let alone during the colder months! Dark chocolate (chocolate that has a high proportion of cocoa) contains a very high amount of antioxidants - so much so that it is rated higher than tea! Watch the portion sizes though.
LEAN RED MEAT Our protein selection is a tough one. Fish and chicken are both great choices, but lean red meat is a great source of iron, zinc and vitamin B12 - all essentials for general fitness activity. Anywhere between 100-200 grams of lean red meat 4 times a week is all you need to ensure optimal muscle function and recovery. If you guys have your own delicious winter recipes, or suggestions of foods to munch on, we'd love to hear them. Just head to our Facebook page and shoot them all through!

WHAT OUR CLUB IS ALL ABOUT
HIGHLIGHTS
Friendship. Love. Life. The Revue society is an entertainer's paradise. The Society's main focus is one major performance (the revue); and each year our amazing talented cast and crew make audiences laugh, cry, giggle and gasp through a selection of killer songs, dances and sketches. Throughout the year we also hold many shindigs and we pride ourselves on being an open, inviting and loving little family.
Our highlight is the Revue Performance, which is on 27th, 28th, and 29th August. We are also currently behind the web mini-series "Campus Cops"; check it out on YouTube!
BEST THING ABOUT OUR CLUB We have a lot of fun putting the show together; we write all our own material so having that creative leeway is pretty exciting. We have fun thinking we are funny. This process also creates strong friendships within the team, as we all strive to put together an entirely original show.
CONTACT US!
QUIRKY FACT We have a secret weapon (or dance move) known as the reverse bowl. Also, upon conception we were a Law Revue, however due to popularity we are now a non-faculty specific revue society - very uncommon for universities within Australia. Another cheeky fact is we have only ever had female presidents!
JOINING OUR CLUB You can join the UTS Revue Society by coming along to Clubs Day on Thursday, 30 July. Alternatively sign up on the ActivateUTS website! Membership is $5 and lasts until the end of the year.

MASTERMINDS Directed by: Jared Hess Cast: Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis Genre: Action | Comedy In theatres: 6 August A night guard at an armoured car company, his flirty work crush and a small group of criminals organise one of the biggest bank heists in this upcoming action comedy. Masterminds is based on true story of the 1997 Loomis Fargo Bank Robbery in North Carolina - the second largest cash robbery in the U.S. at the time.
THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
FANTASTIC FOUR
Directed by: Guy Ritchie Cast: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander Genre: Spy-Fi | Action | Comedy In theatres: 13 August
Directed by: Josh Trank Cast: Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell Genre: Fantasy | Sci-Fi | 3D In theatres: 6 August
Based on the super popular 1964 television series of the same name, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. tells the story of two agents who team up to stop a mysterious international criminal organisation. A must-see for those of you who love spy-fiction, gorgeous people in glamourous 1960s gear or for those who just love Guy Ritchie films!
Oh yes... this one could be truly fantastic (at last)! Its trailer has already broken the Fox Studios record for most viewed trailer, passing X-Men: Days of Future Past. This reboot comes with a shiny new cast and crew, showing the Four teleported to an alternate universe, where their physical form and abilities are completely altered.
MONTY PYTHON’S THE MEANING OF LIFE Directed by: Terry Jones & Terry Gilliam Cast: John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, Michael Palin Genre: Comedy | Musical | Fantasy Released: August 1983 You simply have to watch it to understand how messed up and hysterically funny the Monty Python movies are! Monty Python, or The Pythons, were a British sketch comedy group that made a hit show (Flying Circus) and a handful of golden movies - The Meaning of Life being the last of them. We're going back in time to watch this one again, where it's Christmas every day! The film is split into the many different stages of life, from birth till death, each one searching for the ultimate meaning of life. By the way, keep your eye out for the original tiger onesie - over 30 years ago and weird as hell. This one is a must-see!

BALLERS
2048
Starring: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jazmyn Simon, John David Washington Genre: Comedy | Sport | Drama
2048 has quickly become a top app because it's so addictive! The aim is to reach the ultimate 2048 tile, which is not as easy as some may think. On your screen you'll start with low numbered tiles such as 2's and 4's which you can move up, down or sideways and when two tiles combine, they'll form a tile with a higher number. For example, when two 4 tiles combine they make 8, two 8 tiles make 16 and so on. Once you reach the 2048 tile you win the game, but the catch is every time you move your tiles a new 2 or 4 tile will appear on the grid. Try not to run out of space, or the game will be over!
HBO is just the gift that keeps on giving - great show after great show. Ballers is the newest half-hour HBO comedy show starring the most electrifying man in sports entertainment himself, in a series that is centred around a group of American football players, their families, friends and handlers. Johnson plays former superstar Spencer Strasmore, who is getting his life on track in retirement, while mentoring other current and former players through the day-to-day life of the footballer and the business of it.
