Did you know Halloween.. Orange and black are Halloween colours because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death. Jack o’ Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday. Halloween was brought to North America by immigrants from Europe who would celebrate the harvest around a bonfire, share ghost stories, sing, dance and tell fortunes. Bobbing for apples is thought to have originated from the roman harvest festival that honours Pamona, the goddess of fruit trees. Worldwide, bats are vital natural enemies of night-flying insects. There are so-called vampire bats, but they're not from Transylvania. They live in Central and South America and feed on the blood of cattle, horses and birds. The owl is a popular Halloween image. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and to hear an owl's call meant someone was about to die. The next full moon on Halloween night will be October 31, 2020.

Chancellors Volunteer of the Year Award: Linus Faustin Linus is a well-known face across the University, he came to us from UTS Insearch and was already an engaged volunteer before starting his UTS degree. Linus first became known to ActivateUTS as a volunteer in the Programs Committee, a student advisory group. Quickly his engagement increased to promoting and participating in events such as International Karaoke, joining clubs and societies and becoming an executive for ESAC and UTS Communications Society. This year Linus has been both a Pack Leader and the Pack Manager recruiting students for Clubs Day, Open Day, Club Events and External events such as City2Surf and Nike Run. His recruitment strategy and stall at Clubs Day saw the volunteer numbers increase by 25% in a single day. Linus was a NSW Multicultural Youth Ambassador 2016

working particularly with refugees, volunteered for a political party during the 2016 election, and gave his time generously to UTS International, UTS Careers, Batyr and UTS Insearch with over 150 volunteer hours. He has been an active campaigner for the 'Racism It Stops With Me' campaign and Diversity at UTS events. On top of this Linus is the Communications Director of UTS Society of Communications. Linus is a true UTS ambassador willing to support any department or faculty if asked, he has worked closely with UTS International in peer to peer support and building the brand of inclusion and internationalisation at UTS. Congratulations Linus, we are proud to have you as part of the UTS community!

Club of the Year: UTS Business Society The UTS Business Society has gone from strength to strength over the last few years. They have built upon their student engagement by learning, listening and collaborating with many other societies giving them some best practice strategies. The executive have built upon their external relationships to offer opportunities for their students with jobs, internships and networking with companies such as Deloitte, CA and ANZ. The standout success for the society was the relationship they have built with the UTS Business School receiving a letter of commendation from staff members. The society supported the faculty with their student survey and received excellent results for their efforts this year. The UTS Business Society then took these results and looked at ways for continued improvement in their 2016 strategies. Congratulations to the UTS Business Society winners of the 2016 ActivateUTS Club of the year!

HAUNTED BUILDINGS Building 1, Stairwells

Building 2, level 2=

Figure Eight

Moaning Myrtle

The long and winding stairs of the Tower Building hold many a mystery. The main being figures that can only be seen when taking a photo on an old mobile phone. When the stairs are dimly lit by the old flash, figures can be seen dressed in UTS hoodies from the 90s. It is not known which level these figures occupy, but they have been sighted on Levels 1 and 8. Have you ever had a scary ride in the Building 1 lifts? Doors have opened at the wrong floor? Lift skipped your level entirely? We believe the figures leave the stairs, freak you out in the lifts, only to draw you back to the stairs so they can freak you more.

Now that Building 2 has called time, we can finally reveal the eerie happenings in the toilets and pipes of Building 2, Level 2. After Harry left Hogwarts, we fear Moaning Myrtle has found a new home, hiding inside the cubicles. She has brought with her the ill timed flushes of unoccupied toilets, tap switching (turning the taps on and off) and moans through the pipes when she sees water being wasted. Coincidence that Building 2 will be knocked down in a matter of months? We think not!

Building 5, UTS Library)

Building 10,

The Keeper of Books During the library after hours, you can hear on the top floor a distant sound of someone typing from a computer. It is not your normal light typing, but a solid banging and clicking. The faint sound of typewriter can also be heard in the dead of the night. You will be convinced someone is there, but no one is in sight. Rumour has it that books fall from the shelves while no one is around, and the games in the games room play themselves! We think an ‘eternal student’ just couldn’t bear to be apart from UTS.

Aerial UTS Function Centre

Aerial’s Voice We are all familiar with the story of the Little Mermaid, and how she sacrificed her voice for her love. But, have you ever wondered where Aerial’s voice actually went? During functions at the Aerial UTS Function Centre, guests have reported hearing the distinct voice of the little mermaid herself. She likes to swing on the poles with her new found legs, while singing her signature song of the sea- ahhhhh, ahhhhhh, wondering free, wish I could be, part of your world!

Building 11, Penny Lane The sleep walker Penny Lane is not just your average lane way! During the night you can see shadows along the walls that follow you as you walk, and have been known to jump off the wall and replace your actual shadow! These aren’t your ordinary shadows either, they change their shape and size make you look like everything but you! Word on the street says the ghost shadows are believed to be a dark presence or an out-of-body sleep walker, but we think it’s a class clown ghost just wanting to hang with the cool kids of UTS!

UTS UTS Haberfield Club The Pirates Life The UTS Haberfield Club was formed by charter in 1925, and it is said that the Iron Cove Bay possesses pirate’s gold. It is believed that today many spirts from this time period are still nestled in the bay and throughout the club, even after it was demolished and re-built. Apparitions are often seen on the waters during sunrise, and rowers have reported hearing laughter from their gym and the cellar.

"I NEED A VACATION"

EAT AND EAT AND EAT SOME MORE C’MON. JUST ADMIT IT. You binge out during holidays. Was it the family cake? The ham drenched in butter? Halloween candy? For me it’s always those darn eggnog cartons. Supermarkets only sell them once a year… Not to mention that holidays during Uni break have become somewhat a universal cheat period. You can eat whatever you want without ever feeling bad, just because it’s the holidays. Binging in any form is unhealthy. It more than often leads to larger waistlines, sore throats, digestive issues, lethargy, insulin problems, and of course (in my opinion the worst effect) guilt.

HAD A BAD DAY AT WORK? Copped a parking fine? Messed up your New Year’s Resolution diet? 20 minutes later, you’re lying on the couch, stuffing your face, and crying ‘Screw it! Ice cream will make me happy!’ But why do we binge? Can’t we just say no after that first bite? Childhood is filled with numerous memories alongside favourite treats. I for one will never forget the jubilant ringing bell of the ‘Home Ice Cream’ truck. Being 6 years old was so simple. Bills, Fines, Jobs, Stress… these were all ‘adult’ words and didn’t have any meaning. Adulthood is packed full of stressful thoughts and events to keep you occupied. Our bodies register stressful situations as a threat. Levels of the hormone Cortisol, which functions to metabolise glucose and fats, increases. This surplus of cortisol functions to increase energy efficiency. Sounding like stress allows you burn calories faster? Not so.

IN PRIMITIVE TIMES Being stressed meant a lion was about to attack you. The extra energy was needed to overpower the hunter and save your life. Modern stress, e.g. paying a fine, does not burn off the same amount of calories. The extra glucose provided by cortisol is stored as fat.

In one way or another we’re reminiscing about our stressfree childhoods and go on a ‘Happy Meal’ or ‘Kinder Surprise’ binge when times get tough. Our brain’s reward centre is fixed by the formula ‘Childhood=Happiness’ and in the long-term this can lead to eating disorders including binge eating.

TACTIC A better tactic to employ in order to beat the binge is to modify our reward lobe. Boss giving you a hard time? Go and smash it out in a boxing class. Exercise is a great reward. For those that see the gym as punishment for cheating on their diet, think of this: what else is more rewarding than getting stronger, faster and fitter? Participating in activities that bring you pleasure allows your mind and body to de-stress. In the long term your reward mechanisms will alter. Going for a run or playing Street Fighter will become your new binge. Be a responsible adult and set a positive image and pass on your knowledge, inspire younger ones to participate in active lifestyles they enjoy and remember everything in moderation. Lead by example, eat as you would want your kids to eat when they reach your age. Remember to listen to yourself, you have years of knowledge and experience. Make the right choices and enjoy life to the fullest! For some extra motivation come and chat with Themi at ActivateFit on Harris

SEE YOU AT THE GYM SOON! www.facebook.com/activatefitonharris www.activatefit.com.au

This irregular use of cortisol increases our appetites, and what’s worse encourages lipids to accumulate around our mid-sections. It makes sense that you and your body would want the quickest path out of the stressful situation to reduce the effects of these negativities.

AHH!

BOO! AHH!

AHH!

SCORPIO 23 OCT - 22 NOV

October 26th celebrates “Howl at the Moon Day”, so get ready for prolonged and mournful crying! You’ll have this sudden desire to communicate with your “pack” through high pitched tones that’s guaranteed to send shivers down the spine of those around you.……..aaaHHHOOO!!!

SAGITTARIUS

CAPRICORN

AQUARIUS

People look up to you and you welcome conflict as a learning experience. You will be the perfect leader when the monster apocalypse happens as you are strong, commanding, dedicated and loyal. Flow with it, it will come naturally.

Born during the “party time” of year, everyone loves a goat! During Halloween, you’ll find yourself carving pumpkins, wearing a witches hat and trick or treating with the neighbours. It’s so unlike a Capricorn to throw care to the wind, so drop that hard exterior, enjoy the party and embrace the Halloween “spirit”.

Never leaves a fallen monster behind and is always there to give a helping hand… or paw. You are there in crises like when werewolf has flees, when Dracula needs blood or Harley Quinn wants to play.

PISCES

ARIES

TAURUS

Channel your inner Luna Lovegood and hang with all the other monsters (everyone’s included) on Hallows Eve with a keen ear listening about their struggles not being understood and getting along with everyone. You are a great shoulder to cry on and give them a pep talk.

Typical characteristics of Aries include determined, fiery, a born leader, impulsive, headstrong, loyal, ambitious, spontaneous, daring and active. Sorry folks, it’s a different story during Halloween! Words that come to mind include spooky, creepy, eerie, mysterious, spine-chilling, nightmarish and just plain weird!

Taurus are not found of change, so Halloween is a hard time for you. You’ll try and repress your inner werewolf, so don’t be staring into the mirror looking for thickening eye brows, unwanted or purchasing hair wax removal strips. Keeping yourself away from beauty products will prove difficult, so we wish you well!

GEMINI

CANCER

LEO

Life is like a THRILLING rollercoaster. If you can’t handle the highs and lows, don’t come to the amusement park. If you look down you may find you are casting two shadows, but with only one light to be seen. Look in the mirror if you dare your dark twin knows not the stare!

Around the 16th there will be a full moon present beware!! Cancer is the ruler of the moon and because of this the many phases of its lunar cycle can deepen Cancers mysteries and create emotional patterns that will make you sensitive beyond your control!

King of the Jungle – yeah right! This month you’ll find yourself curled up on someone’s lap, wanting a snuggle and a scratch under the chin. But don’t be fooled - as Halloween takes its hold, Leo’s will want to live and breathe all nine lives. Take some risks and embrace everything this night of horror has to offer.

VIRGO

LIBRA

Your perfectionist tendencies are at an all time high Virgo, and you will find yourself spring cleaning at every Halloween party you attend. Just don’t mistake the Windex for Vodka!

Your alter-ego, the LibraInvisible Man, will resurface for Halloween. Be careful who you let him talk to; he is known to break out into the Time Warp dance mid pumpkin carving and apple bobbing… its just a jump to the left!

Intended for rich vacationers, the futuristic park - which is looked after by robotic "hosts" - allows its visitors to live out their fantasies through artificial consciousness. No matter how illicit the fantasy may be, there are no consequences for the park's guests, allowing for any wish to be indulged. "Westworld" - which is based on the 1973 Michael Crichton movie of the same name - features an all-star cast that includes Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins and Golden Globe winner Ed Harris.
