UTS ROWING CLUB STAND OUT AT NSW STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS WORLD CUP SELECTION RESULTS IN OLYMPIC LEVEL OF RACING From Friday 15 to Sunday 17 February UTS Rowing Club took to the water, competing at the NSW Rowing Championships at the Olympic Rowing Course in Penrith. This regatta forms part of the selection process for the World Cup Regatta being held in Sydney in March. The standard of competition was close to or even higher than seen at National Championships. The intensity was high from the get go with Friday’s single sculls heats. Performance in this category would decide on invitation to National Trials so all athletes were lighting the game. UTS athletes performed well with Kristian Bodell unlucky to miss a place in MU23 1x, whilst Anna O Brien secured her place in CWE1x B final. Saturday was probably the busiest days racing in the clubs year, with athletes arriving at 5am. Thankfully Penrith was a little cooler than in previous years, but special mention must go to all of the athletes, especially the lightweight ones who raced 5 times over the day....10km of flat out racing. High points were (in no particular order) CME2- Bede Clarke and Alessandro Adduci who went 10 seconds quicker between heat and B final and beat a number of NSWIS anointed scholarship holders. Gold medals in mens CML1x and CML2x, Silver in CWL2X. Sarah Pound who came 4th in WL1x, an event with a huge entry of over 40 from all around Australia. Victoria Delipetar also placing 4th in women’s Under 21 single. Elise Andrews final of women’s under 23 single.

JOST SCHOMANN-FINKE, WON THE ML1X IN STYLE AND WAS ARGUABLY THE FASTEST ATHLETE ON THE WATER. Franz Gravenhorst really proved that a good crew is more than a sum of the parts as he dragged Hugh McLeod of Sydney rowing club to victory in ML2x by 0.01 seconds over the favoured and possibly Australian selected crew. Sarah Pound and Laura Dunn confirmed UTS’s position as the lightweight Rowing Club in Australia by coming 2nd in WEL2x. Sunday was only slightly more relaxed and the club got off to another flying start when Victoria Delipetar, Sophie Jerapetritis, Geraldine and Lauren Temm won CWu19 4x in a very close race against SUBC. Silver and Bronze in the women’s elite quad. Kelly Parker making the final of both under 21 and under 23 CW2-. A competitive race from our women’s 8 finishing close to Sydney and Melbourne University crews. In the afternoon Franz Gravenhorst proved that he is the master of finely judged races when he again beat another crew by 0.01 seconds. Again it was a SUBC crew on the receiving end of his accuracy as he, Bede Clarke, Alessandro Aducci and Steve Peile took second in CME4x, narrowly beaten by Mosman’s crew containing Olympian Dan Noonan and AIS superstar Kieran Kobelke. A great meet all round for the UTS Rowing team. Finally Sarah Pound is currently trialing for the Australian Team for the World Cup. Jost Schomann-Finke, Franz Gravenhorst and Mike Keene are in New Zealand taking part in NZ National Championships and the rest of the club is preparing for the Sydney Regatta on Saturday, the last blast before the National Championships.
