UTS ROWING CLUB STAND OUT AT NSW STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS WORLD CUP SELECTION RESULTS IN OLYMPIC LEVEL OF RACING From Friday 15 to Sunday 17 February UTS Rowing Club took to the water, competing at the NSW Rowing Championships at the Olympic Rowing Course in Penrith. This regatta forms part of the selection process for the World Cup Regatta being held in Sydney in March. The standard of competition was close to or even higher than seen at National Championships. The intensity was high from the get go with Friday’s single sculls heats. Performance in this category would decide on invitation to National Trials so all athletes were lighting the game. UTS athletes performed well with Kristian Bodell unlucky to miss a place in MU23 1x, whilst Anna O Brien secured her place in CWE1x B final. Saturday was probably the busiest days racing in the clubs year, with athletes arriving at 5am. Thankfully Penrith was a little cooler than in previous years, but special mention must go to all of the athletes, especially the lightweight ones who raced 5 times over the day....10km of flat out racing. High points were (in no particular order) CME2- Bede Clarke and Alessandro Adduci who went 10 seconds quicker between heat and B final and beat a number of NSWIS anointed scholarship holders. Gold medals in mens CML1x and CML2x, Silver in CWL2X. Sarah Pound who came 4th in WL1x, an event with a huge entry of over 40 from all around Australia. Victoria Delipetar also placing 4th in women’s Under 21 single. Elise Andrews final of women’s under 23 single.

JOST SCHOMANN-FINKE, WON THE ML1X IN STYLE AND WAS ARGUABLY THE FASTEST ATHLETE ON THE WATER. Franz Gravenhorst really proved that a good crew is more than a sum of the parts as he dragged Hugh McLeod of Sydney rowing club to victory in ML2x by 0.01 seconds over the favoured and possibly Australian selected crew. Sarah Pound and Laura Dunn confirmed UTS’s position as the lightweight Rowing Club in Australia by coming 2nd in WEL2x. Sunday was only slightly more relaxed and the club got off to another flying start when Victoria Delipetar, Sophie Jerapetritis, Geraldine and Lauren Temm won CWu19 4x in a very close race against SUBC. Silver and Bronze in the women’s elite quad. Kelly Parker making the final of both under 21 and under 23 CW2-. A competitive race from our women’s 8 finishing close to Sydney and Melbourne University crews. In the afternoon Franz Gravenhorst proved that he is the master of finely judged races when he again beat another crew by 0.01 seconds. Again it was a SUBC crew on the receiving end of his accuracy as he, Bede Clarke, Alessandro Aducci and Steve Peile took second in CME4x, narrowly beaten by Mosman’s crew containing Olympian Dan Noonan and AIS superstar Kieran Kobelke. A great meet all round for the UTS Rowing team. Finally Sarah Pound is currently trialing for the Australian Team for the World Cup. Jost Schomann-Finke, Franz Gravenhorst and Mike Keene are in New Zealand taking part in NZ National Championships and the rest of the club is preparing for the Sydney Regatta on Saturday, the last blast before the National Championships.

CHRIS DYSON

ROOM TO GROW UTS Elite Athlete Program Housing Scholarships A considerable fund has been established by the UTS Union and UTS Housing to provide two E.A.P. Housing Scholarships to support two members of the UTS Elite Athlete Program in their sport and academic pursuits. The scholarship will provide a single room in an apartment at the UTS accommodation for the period of one university year. 2013 WINNERS: CHRIS DYSON – WATER POLO Chris Dyson is a second year Human Movement student. He has competed in the Australian Water Polo squad since 2008 and is a NSWIS Gold scholar targeted for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. He just missed final selection for the 2012 Olympics, and has competed for Australia since then. He managed and captained the UTS Australian University Games Men’s Water Polo team, helping them qualify for Division 1 for the 2013 Games, and has been really involved in the UTS Sports scene despite being a very elite player. Chris is a deserving recipient of the first UTS EAP Housing Scholarship.

NICK KARLOWATZ - SKIING Nick Karlowatz is a third year Medical Science student. He is ranked in the top 10 Open Men’s Alpine Skiers nationally, and is number 1 in NSW. Nick has competed for the Junior Australian team for several years, and has recently made the transition to Open level, where he is performing extremely well. His next 12 months are focusing on Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic selection. Nick contributes greatly to UTS Sport, he is on the UTS Ski Club executive committee and has contributed greatly towards our medal tally AUC Snow Sports over the last two years. In 2012 he was the Overall Men’s Alpine Champion. This year Nick is the UTS Team Manager for AUC’s and will organise the entire squad in Thredbo. Nick is also a deserving recipient of the second EAP Housing Scholarship. Both athletes are in Olympic contention (Chris 2016 and Nick 2014 Winter Olympics) and despite being at the top of their sport are both very involved with UTS Sport, and the events that we run. They have both shown to be great ambassadors for UTS when competing on tour.

ON TRACK... ON THE TRACK Tim Leathart is standout star for NSW

OUR TRI BOYS ARE BACK... TIM LEATHART

TIM LEATHART

Ex UTS Student and 2012 Olympian Tim Leathart stepped up in the sprints at the Track Classic. Coming of huge wins at teh State Titles Leathart, who was a relay reserve in London, showed he will be hard to leave out of the leading four in future with a strong victory in the 100m in a stunning 10.24. It was a 0.12 second personal best for him as he out-dipped Josh Ross (Vic). When asked if he saw this performance coming he said,“Absolutely not! I had been really struggling with a few niggles since December. I’ve been monitoring those injuries and missed a few sessions, so that has been blowing my mind, but the physios have got me in top shape for tonight. I still can’t believe I’ve done that.” He moved up 19 places on the Australian all time list, now parked at 13th and 6th NSW athlete. “Well the season’s goal was to run 10.23, which is the World Championship B standard. But the main focus has been on the 200m. So I’ve far exceeded my and my coach John Patchett’s expectations.” In his 200 Leathart didn’t disappoint, smashing his pervious best of 20.97, running 20.71, placing third to Ross who responded to his 100m defeat by clocking an excellent 20.65.

To repeat their 2012 stella performance and retain their premiership title. 2013 will be the first year that Australian University Championships will run a triathlon series where points accumulated from every race will go towards an overall total. The competition is over an Olympic distance of 1.5km swim followed by a 40km cycle and ending with a 10km run. SO AS WE ALL BEGIN SETTLING INTO UNI LIFE FOR 2013 - KEIREN ROCHE, MIKE WOOD AND NATHAN RYAN TOOK TO THE WATER, THE BIKE AND THE ROAD IN THE ACT TRIATHLON. The boys left Sydney bright and early hoping to leave the rain behind in hope to find a calm and sunny Canberra, but this wasn’t to be. The weather in down south was to be no better and the run-off into Lake Burleigh Griffin had caused the pollution levels to become too high to swim, so a last minute change of course was on the books. Still, the swim now on the other side of the lake wasn’t going to be easy, the wind on the shallow lake made the chop a nightmare but our boys didn’t batter an eye as the race got underway. The 3 lap cycle leg had its moments. In one direction the boys where cruising downhill at 50km/h downhill with a tail wind before rounding the hairpin and heading back up hill at 24km/h. The final 10km run halfway around the lake and back saw glimpses of sunshine and a the flat cycle path looked promising but that was soon replaced by a cold breeze and a challenging hill. All our boys made it to the end snagging vital points for the triathlon title. Special mention goes to Kieran Roche who finished 3rd overall and won his age group.

The club is now looking to support all its athletes who are at Olympic trials and preparing for Open Nationals to conclude what has been a great season for the club. North’s has this year grown its membership to 350 members confirming it as the largest senior club in NSW, special mention goes to one of their members, Janet Naylon at the recent North Sydney Community Awards. Janet was presented with an Australian Government Sport Achievement Award in recognition of her services to athletics over 30 years. To join the club visit their website http://www.utsnorthsath.com.au/. Membership for UTS students is FREE!
