BLUES SPORTING AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE It’s the UTS Sport night of nights, the Blues Sporting Awards of Excellence; celebrating the achievements of the elite athletes, intervarsity teams and sports clubs over the year. Held at the newly refurbished Aerial UTS Function Centre in late November, guests were treated to delicious food and drinks in a spectacularly styled room. The 2017 Blues Awards was an extra special evening as for the first time in history, UTS celebrated winning the Australian University Games in its 25th anniversary year. Following a recap video of the games, the Championship trophy was presented to UTS by the Australian University Sport President, Dr Dee Anderson, who praised UTS for their strong sporting culture. The evening then moved onto the presentation of awards, the first being the Full Blue and Half Blue winners. These are awarded to athletes who have reached professional athlete status, are state or national champions or who have represented Australia in their chosen sport. OVERALL UNIVERSITY SPORT CHAMPIONS In 2017 for the second year in a row, UTS has claimed the title of overall university sport champions. The announcement came shortly after UTS’ first ever win at the Australian University Games in September on the Gold Coast. Over 800 students represented UTS in intervarsity sport in 2017, with 10 teams taking out national titles. The first 8 titles came after the tough week-long Australian University Games competition from men’s and women’s futsal, women’s netball, women’s tennis, women’s water polo, men’s athletics, men’s swimming and men’s kendo. Several of the UTS teams including women’s touch football, mixed netball, beach volleyball and men’s football won silver medals, and bronze medals for UTS were won by women’s athletics,

women’s golf and men’s tennis. The race to be crowned the Australian University Games champion for 2017 (which was also the 25th anniversary of the games) was a tight one! UTS came out on top just ahead of Melbourne University with 7 titles, and our neighbours Sydney University, finished with 6 titles. UTS’ final two titles came later in the year for the men’s and women’s triathlon teams, which was calculated following several events throughout 2017. Over the year, 30 students competed for UTS in both sprint and Olympic distance triathlons. This was the 6th consecutive year that the men’s triathlon team have won the National Title, and the 5th consecutive year the women’s team have won.

Following the announcement of the title win, UTS Provost and Senior Vice President, Professor Andrew Parfait said; “Being named the Overall Champion for Australian University Sport in 2017, for the second year in a row, is an impressive achievement and I congratulate all the UTS athletes and ActivateUTS team members who were involved. This accomplishment is a testament to our strong sporting culture.

competition held in July and the division 1 competition held in September. Several sports, including T20 cricket, rowing, distance running and triathlon will have standalone National Championships spread throughout the year. The UTS team is looking to take out their 3rd overall title in 2018 and if you would like to be involved and represent the team, contact uni.sport@uts.edu.au or drop into the office in Building 4, next to ActivateFit on Harris.

The Australian University Games will take a new direction in 2018, rebranded to the National University Championships, with a division 2

RUGBY 7S ACADEMY Women’s participation in Rugby 7s has skyrocketed following the Australian Women’s team Gold medal win at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Eager to create a pathway for women looking to get involved in the game, in partnership with the Gordon Highlanders Rugby Union Club, UTS has established the UTS Gordon Women’s Rugby 7s Academy. Participants attend free sessions with experienced coaches to learn the craft of the game, or develop their existing skills. Based in the Chatswood area and kicking off in 2017, the academy has had a strong following with at least 15 players at each session and it is continuing to grow. The first session of 2018 saw 28 attend, as the squad works towards being ready for two tournaments in February, Hamilton and Lake Macquarie 7s. The academy is set to add a second weekly session to best prepare the squad for the Shute Shield Women’s 7s competition, commencing in late March. If you would like to get involved in the UTS Gordon Rugby 7s Academy, please contact Madison.Ashworth@uts.edu.au for details.

FROM UNIVERSITY GAMES TO THE WORLD STAGE In 2016, Ben O’Donnell was selected to represent UTS at the Australian University Games as part of the Rugby 7s side. The UTS side came away with the gold medal and shortly after, Ben found himself representing the Australian Universities 7s side in Adelaide at the 2016 ARU National 7s Championships. Out of 12 teams, he was voted Player of the Tournament which was presented by the Australian Men’s 7s Coach, Andy Friend. Fast forward several months and Ben has secured himself a full time position in the Australian Men’s 7s squad, comprising of just 18 full time athletes. Unfortunate for the UTS 7s side, however a fantastic, hard-earned opportunity for Ben, he was representing Australia at the Oktoberfest 7s tournament in Germany at the same time as the 2017 Australian University Games. Australia took out the Oktoberfest 7s. Impressing team staff in training and competition, Ben received the news in November 2017 that he would be making his HSBC World Rugby 7s Series debut in Dubai, flying out the day after the UTS

18

Blues Sporting Awards. Ben spoke to rugby.com.au about his selection saying, “I’ve been in the program for a year so I have finally got my body good and ready to go. I played my first ever tournament exactly this time last year, with the Nationals on, ever since then I’ve been with Friendy and I’m loving it. “It’s been something I didn’t expect, but as Friendy said when I joined the Sevens program, it all happens really fast.”

Ben O’Donnell

Since debuting late last year, he has also been selected to play for Australia in the Cape Town 7s and Sydney 7s legs of the World Series. Ben is balancing his full-time training load and travel for tournaments, with part-time study at UTS, completing a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Management. The Australian University Games pathway has provided Ben with the

opportunity to be recognised and subsequently receive a full-time professional contract and the opportunity to wear the Green and Gold. A number of former UTS students have held or currently hold full time contracts with the Australian 7s squad, including Brandon Quinn, Boyd Killingworth and Samuel Figg. Each of these players also represented UTS at the Australian University Games during their studies.

ACTIVATEFIT ON HARRIS ActivateFit 5 in 5 with top ActivateFit on Harris personal trainer Damian Carey ‘Damo’ has worked in the fitness industry for over 10 years training people of all ages and from all walks of life. Some of his favourite hobbies includes adventure races like Tough Mudder, Spartan, True Grit, Tough Bloke Challenge, Wild Endurance 100kms, triathlon and fun runs. ActivateFit (A): What are the main factors when you decide to take on an event? Damo (D): Some of the driving factors for myself to take on these events are the thought of having a challenge, pushing my body out of its day-to-day comfort zone, the chance to test my physical ability, to help people take part and see them succeed, to try to beat a previous time/effort, to hang out with a variety of people and to most importantly have some fun. A: Do you have any fears or reservations with the races? D: Initially I was not good with heights, standing on top of a 5 metre high platform and having to jump into a pool

22

U T S S P O R T M A G A Z I N E // E D I T I O N O N E

of water during my first Tough Mudder event or climbing a 5 metre high rope and looking down thinking how am I going to get down during my first Spartan event brought on a churning feeling in the stomach and a tough mental battle to complete them. Afterwards there was a level of relief, but there was also a fantastic feeling of “I just did it”, which in turn helped build my confidence. A: Do you Personal Train people to prepare them for such events? D: Yes, Having trained many people for running events with various distances from 4kms to 42kms, and mixed teams for obstacle races, there is a large level of satisfaction watching people improve their abilities and accomplishing their goals. I also run group training sessions as they are a great way for people on the team to get to know each other. For people undertaking an event for the first time, there can be a certain level of anxiousness and trepidation, which means there needs to be balance between training the body and the mind. A: Why would you recommend events like these and can we join the group training at ActivateFit ?

D: Yes and yes! Events are an excellent way to test your abilities, give you an extra goal to help you train harder, to try different exercises to help your body prepare for the event and to meet other people who you can learn from and do things outside of the gym with. “Are you currently exercising, just starting or restarting?”— At the start it can be confusing about what exercises to do, what to aim for, why you are exercising, what will keep you motivated etc. Signing up for an event will give you a very specific goal to work towards, which will keep you focused and give you something to aim for. ActivateFit will be entering teams into events throughout 2018, and they will run group training session for

preparations! So I look forward to seeing you there. A: Tell us three interesting things about yourself and what is your favourite fitness quote? D: (1) I don’t like eating anything with ginger in it, (2) I have white water rafted off the highest waterfall that is commercially possible to do so, and (3) I am learning to speak Cantonese. Please contact ActivateFit if you would like to find out more about training for an event or anything health.
