surf’s Up

the samurai strike again

for the UTS Surfing Team

Steven Le appointed NSW State captain Although it was Victoria who had the edge in the final placings, the talent of UTS competitors at the 37th Kendo National Championship in Canberra definately did not go unnoticed. For runners up Steven Le and Jayson Chaplin, selection success came from the practice, skill and determination both athletes demonstrated in their divisions and individual matches. Their performances secured their positions in the NSW State Kyu and NSW State Dan Teams.

They may be winding down their very successful Sunday surfing sessions, but there’s no doubt the UTS Surfing Club is winding up for Surfing AUC’s. it’s not how long you ride the wave, but what you do on that wave while riding it! Twelve super keen UTS surfers will be making the pilgrimage up to Lennox Head to compete at the intervarsity surfing championships this month. Squeezing out of the van into their wetties, they’ll take to the waves. Some will represent on their short boards, others choosing something a tad longer, while a few will ride the swell on body boards. Whatever their chosen apparatus we can’t wait to see the results this team will bring back to Sydney.

2012 Korean Kumdo Championship In the recent Korean Kumdo Championship Sigmund Bautista and Steven Le both made it to the quarter finals in the individual Kyu events. Taek Yang placed 2nd in the Dan individuals and Jinny Lai placed 3rd in the Open Women’s division rounds. But it was smiles all round when the UTS team took victory over USyd’s team in a close finals match. Franco Lay was awarded the Encouragement Award and Jinny Lai and Thomas Seggie both winning the Fighting Spirit Award.

100KM in 36 hours

The challenge required 4 team members including Kevin Lai, Karena Shell, Puru Karki and Stevie Easton to trek 100km within 36 hours in the beautiful World Heritage wilderness of the Blue Mountains.

UTS Outdoor Adventure’s saving the wild 1 step at at time.

They climbed mountains, crossed rivers and endured aches, pains, cramps, chaffing and blisters all in the name of the environment to raise funds for The Wilderness Society and they did it! The team raised over $1,900 to protect the wilderness.

Think that’s crazy….well that’s just the type of challenge our OAC club members get excited about.
