Dear Friends,

Behind every scholarship is a story – about a donor’s passion, memories of a loved one, or aspirations for the future. Scholarships are a symbol of how our generous donors work to change the trajectory of our students’ lives, the university, the city of Milwaukee and the world in which we live.

Just as every scholarship tells a story, so does every student. Our scholarship recipients are working hard to achieve their dreams, and they are tremendously grateful for the support you have provided.

In this publication, you’ll see the broad reach that scholarships have at UWM. And you’ll read firsthand statements about how important these awards are to the students who receive them and the donors who fund them.

Please take a moment to look through this book. It’s our way of saying, “Thank you. Your gifts mean more than you will ever know.” As we continue to expand and improve our stewardship programs, I invite your feedback – directly to me or to any member of the Advancement team you are in contact with. We’d love to hear from you.

I hope that as you read this, you are proud of your support of UWM students. They are the future of Milwaukee and Wisconsin, and I cannot think of a better legacy than helping them succeed. If you are inspired to expand your giving to students, don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to help you make an impact!

All best,

A MESSAGE FROM UWM CHANCELLOR MARK A. MONE

Thank you for supporting our students through scholarships.

Since it was established, the University of WisconsinMilwaukee has focused on helping students achieve their academic and career ambitions. We can do this because of you – your scholarship gifts transform lives and help our students unlock their potential at UWM.

Each student is unique, but they all share a drive to explore, question, connect and build in ways that advance our state and world. The extraordinary ripple effect of your philanthropy is reflected in the data on the facing page and tells the story about UWM’s impact on the economic health of this region and this state. Our students all have a story as well – one of resilience, strength and dedication. I invite you to spend time with this report and on our Advancing UWM website to discover the remarkable stories of our donors and students.

Hear from Chancellor Mone and four scholarship recipients at give.uwm.edu/scholarships.

Josephine Andersen | Freshman | Computer Science

Receiving this scholarship means that my family won’t feel the added pressure of my student debt alongside theirs. My mother was unable to complete her college education as a result of not being able to financially support her family while going into increasingly more student debt. With the support of my scholarship, my family will have the opportunity to watch me attend college without fear of my future being riddled with debt.

Sam Hauke

Class: Junior

Major: Biomedical Engineering

In addition to studying engineering at UWM, Sam is part of the swimming and diving team, just like his mom was when she attended UWM. Sam says swimming has kept him focused and provided him with close friendships. A dedicated student-athlete, he has maintained the highest GPA on his team and made the dean’s list. With medical school on the horizon, Sam says, “Receiving my scholarship has left me feeling confident about my ability to succeed throughout the long journey ahead. I cannot describe how grateful I am.”

Caleb Henry | Senior | Health Care Administration

I would describe myself as a scholar, an athlete, a helper and a community member. My goal revolves around learning the inner workings of the hospitals, clinics and medical services I’ve used throughout my life. This scholarship will help alleviate some of the financial difficulty I have been facing in regard to paying for school and will more easily allow me to achieve my dream of helping people through health services.

Jesse Hertzke | Junior | Occupational Science & Technology

My professional “raison d’être” is helping others thrive through occupations that are meaningful and beneficial to them. I have physical as well as neurodevelopmental disabilities that connect me in some ways to the population that OT serves. It’s difficult to articulate how much earning this scholarship means to me. It inspires me to work even harder each day, and for that and more I will forever be thankful for all of you that have made this possible.

Donor Honors Wife by Encouraging Excellence

Jere’s connections to UWM are numerous. His late wife, Professor Emerita Ruth McGaffey, taught communication for more than 20 years, and he has served on the UWM Foundation Board of Directors and the College of Nursing Advisory Board. In 2021, he was awarded an honorary doctorate for his professional accomplishments and his involvement with UWM. In addition to the McGaffey Lecture Series in History, Jere established the Ruth McGaffey Scholarship and the McGaffey Nursing Excellence Scholarship to encourage high-achieving students and, ultimately, advance society.

My favorite part of my classes so far has been the final projects, including: an anthology, a short story, and even a podcast episode! I am thrilled with how creative I am allowed to be, and it makes my education feel so much richer. I am here because of the graciousness of people like you. I thank you immensely for your continued generosity and will continue to put it to good use in my studies.

Rutu Kumbhani | Senior | Biological Sciences and Neuroscience

I would like to wholeheartedly thank you for awarding me this scholarship! I am originally from India and graduated from Grafton High School in the Milwaukee suburbs. I consider my cross-cultural background to be one of my biggest assets. Acquiring this scholarship has boosted my self-esteem and aided my financial situation. Your scholarship is an investment in my future and will bring me one step closer to achieving my career goal of becoming a dentist.

I am a first-generation college student, and I currently work and go to school full time. I will be the first in my family to attend a university and the first to graduate college. Thank you for not only funding this scholarship but believing in the students of UWM. It’s not a surprise that college is expensive, but your kindness and generosity make students like me feel more confident and motivated to continue towards higher education.

A few years before the pandemic, I became a caretaker for two family members and decided to become a nurse. However, I have worried over many sleepless nights that I would have to drop out because I couldn’t afford the program. This scholarship is giving me the opportunity to finish, and your generosity has moved me to tears! In the future I plan to give back to other students who are struggling in similar situations.

Nicholas

| Master’s Student | Library & Information Science

My wife and I have three kids, and together, we raise chickens and grow veggies on our property in central Virginia. I became a librarian to practice knowledge in service to others. I chose UWM because I needed an affordable, accredited and entirely online program. This degree is not just to further my career prospects but also to better provide for my family, so receiving this scholarship means I can finish my program on time and debt-free.

Kamari Clayton

Class: ’22 BS Kinesiology

Major: Doctoral Student, Physical Therapy

The first in his family to attend college, Kamari felt overwhelmed by the cost. When he received news of his first scholarship, he was amazed that someone believed in his dream of becoming a physical therapist. Scholarships allowed Kamari to finish his bachelor’s degree in four years while serving as a caregiver for his grandmother and father. In May of 2022, Kamari’s niece and nephew watched him graduate cum laude from UWM, where he is now pursuing his doctorate in physical therapy.

My mother passed away over a year ago, and since then I have been on autopilot trying to stay busy. I have worked over 60 hours a week while being a full-time student during the semester and could not bear the weight these pressures put onto me. This scholarship means I can take one of my jobs away, take back some “me” time and start volunteering as a soccer coach again.

Jharrell Frazier | Senior | Social Work

I will be graduating this school year, and I look forward to making a difference in our world with the skills that I’ve learned at UWM. Social work became my calling when I realized that I was put here to speak up for the people without a voice and help everyone that I can! This scholarship means a lot because on top of the financial benefit, there is a sense of acknowledgment that shows that my hard work is not going unnoticed.

I grew up helping my parents as a translator and interpreter and received so much joy when they were able to understand. Ever since then my siblings and I have helped them learn English. I am extremely thankful for my scholarship. There is still uncertainty in my situation and a possibility of me having to take a break from school in order to get the funds. However, I am extremely grateful for this help and will always be.

Andrew Innerbrenner | Junior | Civil Engineering

I work full time, compete on UWM’s D1 swimming and diving team, and still can maintain a 3.778 GPA, so receiving this scholarship helps me more than I can ever express. Being financially independent and still attending school becomes extremely stressful at times, and this scholarship takes some of that stress off my shoulders. I will continue to work hard and prove that it was the right decision to select me to receive this scholarship.

My long-term goal is to pursue medical school and become a rural physician with specialties in adolescent medicine and LGBTQIA+ care. Because of your support, graduate students like me are able to continue their studies with a decreased burden of stress and we’re able to focus on academic excellence. With my scholarships, I was able to maintain a 4.0 GPA because I didn’t have to spend as much time working to afford groceries and my electric bill.

After gaining years of experience and knowledge, I would like to fulfill my goal of finding the gaps in the current nonprofit sector within Milwaukee and seeing how my nonprofit can be of benefit to the surrounding community. The financial incentive of this scholarship will enable me to work fewer hours, allowing me to explore parttime or internship roles focusing on fund development. I am beyond grateful for this gift. Tabitha Wechlo | Junior and Track & Field Athlete | Education

I am a first-generation student from a family of blue-collar workers, who always encouraged me. I came to UWM because of the track program, and I was drawn to English education because I love to write. On top of being a student athlete, I also became a caretaker for my family, and I cannot squeeze a job into my schedule. To my family, this scholarship displays how good things come in the darkest of times.

Nicholas Gilhaus | Senior and Baseball Athlete | Mechanical Engineering

The generosity of my scholarship donors has given me the opportunity to pursue my passions at UWM. As of now, I plan on pursuing a master’s degree in aerospace engineering to fuse my current mechanical engineering and computer science knowledge with possible space applications. Instead of worrying about financials, I am able to be the captain of the UWM baseball team, conduct undergraduate research, experience Milwaukee and make lasting friendships. I am forever grateful for the support.

Ethan Hightire | Sophomore | Theatre

I chose UWM because I heard this school had the best acting program in Milwaukee, if not Wisconsin. I had been tied between two productions: one professional gig and one for UWM. My commitment to UWM means making tough sacrifices, and there will be future opportunities for me to take. Thankfully, I was rewarded this scholarship for that sacrifice, and I’m incredibly humbled by the proposition.

Kalei Vasquez | Sophomore | Film

I have performed on campus many times with the Latino Arts Strings Program, and I loved the energy of the school. When I wanted to be a filmmaker, it was like a dream to realize that UWM has one of the best film programs. Education is one of the most important things in life, and I will hopefully one day also help students as I have been helped. I am incredibly appreciative to receive this scholarship.

Christopher Dobbie | Sophomore | Architectural Studies

Originally, I was going to attend another university, but a late scholarship opportunity swayed my decision in UWM’s favor. It made my schooling essentially cost-free and gave me the opportunity to intern for an architectural firm. This scholarship gives me the space to step back and put my career goals front and center. It gives me the space to be me, and hopefully I’m able to make changes in the lives of those I encounter.

Student Leader Studies in Milwaukee and Abroad

Class: Junior

Major: Education and Spanish

In her time at UWM so far, Yazmin has gotten involved! She was a college fellow with Leaders Igniting Transformation, which encourages civic engagement among youth of color, and she interned with Fund My Future Milwaukee, which promotes children’s savings accounts for higher education. She has also been active in jiu-jitsu and the Latinx Student Union at UWM. This year she is traveling to Seville, Spain. “Studying abroad always seemed unreachable for me as a firstgeneration student already struggling to pay for college, but through scholarships, it has become a reality! Thank you for inspiring me to believe in myself.”

I am involved in UWM’s Legal Clinic as a non-paid paralegal for 10 hours a week. I have an interest in legislation and plan to attend law school. This scholarship comes at an important time for me. I have always wanted to study abroad, but finances were a concern. I hoped that I could work hard enough to get a scholarship, and I relied on that chance. I am grateful to travel abroad during my last summer as an undergrad.

Sydney Sweet | Senior | Education

After experiencing several tragedies that forced me to really analyze myself and what I wanted to do in life, I decided that the only way that I could make the biggest impact was getting an education. I have always worked full-time, even while being a fulltime student, and receiving this scholarship means more than I can express. I have received a lot of help to get to where I am now, and I will pay it forward tenfold.

I am a father to two great children, a husband to an amazing nurse, and a naval veteran. My career goals are to continue aquatic research and work on conservation efforts with varied aquatic species. I would like to express my appreciation for this generous gift to help me continue my education. This scholarship allows me to afford child care while I complete my studies and take a step back from my job. Acts of generosity such as this make a tremendous difference.

Receiving scholarships like this one is incredibly motivating for me while I continue my studies at UWM. It inspires me to continue to work hard in achieving my goals in hopes of someday being able to also give back to students who are in the same place as me. It is wonderful to know that great people care so much about freshwater science and are willing to support students who are trying to make a career in the field.

David Waite | Junior | Information Science & Technology

I have a background in retail, computer/device repair, and criminal justice, and I chose UWM because I decided to change career paths and pursue my bachelor’s degree. I was drawn to the IST program because I was always very good with computers from a young age. As far as career goals, I want to get a job in the cybersecurity field. This scholarship will help me continue my journey.

Malyun Ali | Junior | Information Science & Technology

I grew up watching my father fixing computers, which fascinated me. After college, I plan on working as a project manager, all thanks to my four-week internship with NonprofIT, which exposed me to the duties and responsibilities of a project manager. This scholarship means the world to me. Thank you for believing in me and investing in my future. I hope one day I am given the opportunity to pay it forward and invest in another student’s future success.

Business Icon Leaves Legacy at UWM

Class: ’80 BBA Marketing, ’21 Honorary Doctor of Business

Steven and his five siblings all earned degrees at UWM. He went on for an MBA at the University of Chicago, spent more than 30 years leading consumer brands and ultimately became the chairman & CEO of Bob Evans Farms, Inc. In 2015, Steven and his siblings created the Henry J. Davis and Delores T. Davis Scholarship at UWM in honor of their parents, and just before he passed away in July of 2022, Steven and his wife, Lynnda, established the Steven Davis Business Scholarship Fund. “Going to UWM’s business school was truly transformational for me,” he said in a 2021 interview.

“This is a school that is committed to your education. The purpose this university serves is incredible.”

Najeeb Mavrakis | Freshman | Business and Information Technology Management

I got to know UWM at a young age because I had three bothers who went there. My brothers who went into ITM drew me to the program; I was fascinated by what they were doing and wanted to learn more. Receiving this scholarship means a lot to me and my family because I don’t have to worry about getting the money or taking a loan to continue my education at a college.

Savannah Sievert | Freshman | Accounting

My main goal when selecting a college was to find a home that offered both growth academically and athletically for me. I plan to major in accounting, and I would love to one day get my master’s in sports management and work at a university in their sports finance department. I want to thank the donors for their tremendous generosity and consideration. Receiving this scholarship is such a blessing to my family and me.

Aden Sengsouvanh | Freshman | Computer Science

I hope to become a software engineer after competing my studies at UWM. This choice to go to college for computer science was a tough one for me because I have been working as an apprentice at We Energies, which also would have covered my college expenses. I was extremely happy and relieved when I got the news that I had been chosen to receive this scholarship. Thank you for your generosity.

Alyssa Wastradowski | Master’s Student | Sustainable Peacebuilding

I am Filipina and a first-generation student. Last winter, I gave up a well-paying job that would look great on a resume because it was taking away from my ability to keep up with assignments. Receiving this scholarship helps to fill that monetary gap and has shown me that prioritizing my education was the right decision. UWM was my dream university, and you’ve helped make that dream a reality. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

ANNUAL AND ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS 31

Would you like to establish a named scholarship?

Your scholarship support plays a critical role in attracting students to UWM and helping them persevere through to graduation. A gift of scholarship support at UWM is, without question, a gift of future opportunity. Here is more detail on how to establish named scholarships:

Current-use Scholarships

These scholarships allow you to make an immediate difference. A gift of $10,000 qualifies for a named, current-use scholarship. You may take up to five years to fund the scholarship, which can be renewed annually for as long as you choose to give.

Example of a $10,000 gift at work: You want your gift to go to work right away, so you decide to establish a current-use scholarship with a gift of $2,000 annually for five years. The full $2,000 will be awarded each year to one or more deserving students*.

Endowed Scholarships

Like the education it supports, an endowed scholarship is an enduring gift. The key feature that distinguishes an endowed scholarship from other scholarships is that the gift is not immediately spent but is instead invested for long-term growth. A gift of $50,000 qualifies for establishing a named, endowed scholarship. You may take up to five years to fund the endowment, and you may make additional contributions at any time.

Example of a $50,000 gift at work: With an estimated annual distribution rate of 4%, your endowed scholarship will generate approximately $2,000 annually in scholarship awards – year after year. As the fund’s value grows, so will the distributions and, therefore, the amount available for scholarships.

Bridging the Present and Future

An endowed scholarship is the most enduring investment you can make in our students, but it takes time for a student to receive that first award. Once the endowment is established, the fund will still require one full year of investment. A blended gift is a satisfying way to immediately help students while you build an endowment for the future. You can accomplish this by making two gifts a year: one to grow your endowment and the other to provide a current-use scholarship. Because both gifts are part of your total commitment, your current-use gift carries with it the same name and legacy as your endowed gift.
