senderismo hiking La espectacularidad del paisaje tarifeño es la primera grata sorpresa que saluda al visitante. La presencia de África regala un matiz mágico al horizonte y hace patente que ésta es tierra de contrastes. Su variedad y riqueza ha motivado que en nuestro territorio existan dos Parques Naturales. La práctica totalidad de nuestras amplísimas playas de finísima y blanca arena se encuentra protegida por el Parque Natural del Estrecho, que valora su riqueza y conservación en tierra y también bajo el mar. El Parque de los Alcornocales constituye el último ejemplo de bosque mediterráneo que se conserva en toda Europa, y en él sorprenden los “canutos”, profundos y estrechos valles excavados por los riachuelos y cubiertos por la vegetación, así como las especies subtropicales que en él han encontrado refugio. También sus dos grandes dunas, coronando las playas de Bolonia y Valdevaqueros, destacan por su amplitud y altura que les ha valido la consideración de monumentos naturales. Tarifa constituye un lugar privilegiado para la observación de los movimientos migratorios tanto de aves como de mamíferos marinos, proporcionando un espectáculo natural poco corriente.

SENDEROS DEL PARQUE NATURAL LOS ALCORNOCALES

HIKING TRAILS IN THE ALCORNOCALES NATURAL PARK

CN 340 dirección Tarifa- Algeciras, a la altura del km 95. Nos encontramos un desvío a la derecha en el área recreativa el Bujeo. El sendero parte del área recreativa el Bujeo. A partir de una señal de inicio de sendero, ascendemos por una pista forestal perfectamente marcada a través de una zona de Bujeo. Algunos barrancos nos permiten disfrutar de magníficas vistas de la sierra. Siempre en ascenso hasta llegar a la segunda señal de inicio de sendero (antes del puente) que nos adentra en el canuto de este magnífico río. A partir de aquí comenzamos la bajada. Nos encontramos con una flora típica de selva tropical, numerosas especies de helechos, alisos, quejigos... Continuamos el sendero cercano al río (siempre por su margen izquierda). Siguiendo el sendero nos vamos alejando del río hasta llegar a tener una excelente panorámica del canuto. Podemos ver la vegetación típica de este tipo de formación. En días claros, hay unas magníficas vistas del mar y de la torre Guadalmesí, allá en la desembocadura de este río. Una baliza bidireccional nos indicará la subida, hacia la izquierda, a la pista forestal que nos llevó al comienzo del canuto. Una vez en la pista, tomamos hacia la derecha para volver al inicio del sendero.

CN 340 direction Tarifa-Algeciras, at km 95. We can see a detour to the right of the recreational area el Bujeo. The path leaves from the recreational area el Bujeo. After a sign indicating the beginning of the trail, we go up a well-marked forest path through a zone in the Bujeo. The ravines allow us magnificent views of the surrounding hills. We continue up until we arrive at the second sign indicating the trail’s start (before the bridge) which tunnels us into the valley of this magnificent river. From there we begin to descend. We find a flower typical to tropic jungles, numerous species of ferns, alders, galloaks… we then continue on the trail close to the river (always on her left side.) Following the trail takes us further from the river until we arrive at an incredible panoramic view of the valley and her flora. On clear days, there are magnificent views of the ocean and the Guadalmesí tower in the mouth of the river. A bi-directional sign indicates the rise of a forest path, to the left, which takes us to the beginning of the valley. Once on the path, we take a right to return to the start of the trail.

The majesty of the Tarifan landscape is the first pleasant surprise to greet its visitors. The presence of Africa lends a magical touch to the horizon and confirms that this is a land of contrasts. Her variety and fullness have given cause to two Natural Parks. The entirety of Tarifa’s wide-reaching beaches of fine, white sand is protected by the Natural Park of the Strait of Gibraltar, which appraises the natural wealth and conservation on land as well as under water. The Alcornocales Park represents the last example of the Mediterranean forest in all of Europe. Within these forests we find “canutos”; profound and narrow valleys carved by streams and covered in vegetation, within which hide subtropical species which have found their refuge there. The two great sand dunes, in the beaches of Bolonia and Valdevaqueros, stand out as well for their expanse and height, which have granted them status as natural monuments. Tarifa provides a privileged place for the observation of migratory movements of birds as well as marine mammals, offering an unusual and unique spectacle. Se contempla el paso por los canutos de las gargantas de Facinilla, Mariano, Roque y el Huerto, así como la contemplación del Bosque de galería del Arroyo de Saladavieja antes de llegar al área recreativa Los Tornos. Abandonamos Facinas camino a las Cabrerizas, siempre en sentido ascendente, dejando atrás tras 1,5 de recorrido, la última casa de dicho núcleo disperso. Tomamos el camino forestal que parte hacia el este desde la cerrada curva del camino ascendente cruzándose, poco después de la Garganta de la Facinilla, un portillo. Tras pasar el segundo portillo, el camino discurre por un cortafuegos, dirigiéndose en adelante al sur, hacia la garganta de Mariano. La erosión antrópica redunda en el estado de conservación de este canuto, si bien existe una importante población de rododendros. La vereda asciende levemente durante unos cien metros, tras los cuales el camino prosigue en un leve descenso con amplias vistas hacia el este, hasta llegar al Canuto de Roque. En él volvemos a encontrarnos con varios madroños. Una vez cruzado el pequeño cauce se desciende hacia el Rancho Roque, en ruinas, situado en el margen derecho del cortafuegos, por el que habremos de andar. Desde dicho lugar, nos dirigimos por una vereda hasta la Garganta del Huerto, pasada la cual tomamos la vereda que se dirige al este, bordeándolo, que comunica con un camino forestal ondulante, que desemboca en la Casa del Vilano. Desde el límite inferior de la Casa del Vilano, continuamos hacia el este, hasta alcanzar la CA-2213, cruzada la cual nos dirigimos hacia el cauce del Arroyo de Saladavieja. El cauce aparece bordeado por un espeso bosque de galería formado por adelfas, álamos y alisos. En el bosque de galería es posible ver, con paciencia o suerte, algún ejemplar del escurridizo Martín Pescador. Retornamos a la comarca CA-2213 y nos dirigimos al Área Recreativa Los Tornos, la cual cuenta con una zona lúdica infantil además de ser un entorno ideal para pasar un buen día con familiares y amigos en plena naturaleza. Garganta Mariano

We can pass through the valleys of the Facinilla, Mariano, Roque, and Huerto Gorges, as well as the Forest of the Saladavieja Stream before arriving to the recreational area Los Tornos. Leave Facinas direction ‘las Cabrerizas,’ and continue ascending the slope, passing the last house of the town after 1,5km of the route. Take the forest trail which goes to the East from a curve in the ascending path, just after crossing an opening to the Facinilla Gorge.

SENDEROS DEL PARQUE NATURAL DEL ESTRECHO TRAILS IN THE NATURAL PARK OF THE STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR After passing the second opening, the trail continues along a firewall path, in a Southern direction, towards the Mariano Gorge. The anthropic erosion results in the state of conservation of this valley, and causes the important population of rhododendrons seen here. The lane ascends slightly for about 100 metres, after which the path continues in a slight descend with extensive views to the East, until the Roque Valley. In this valley, we find several examples of Arbutus Trees. Once we cross the small channel, we descend towards the Roque Ranch, in ruins, situated in the right side of the firewall path, which we now follow. From this place, we follow a path to the Huerto Gorge. After passing the Huerto Gorge, we take a path to the East, bordering the Gorge, which connects to an undulating forest path which arrives at the Casa del Vilano (Vilano House). From the lower limits of the House of Vilano, we continue eastward, reaching the CA-2213, after which we head towards the bed of the stream of Saladavieja. The channel is bordered by a thick forest formed by Oleanders, Poplars and Alder trees. In this forest it is possible to see, with patience or luck, signs of the elusive Kingfisher bird. We return to the regional CA-2213 and continue to the Rcreational Area ‘Los Tornos,’ which offers a fun playground as well as being an ideal environment for a good day with friends and family in the countryside. Para este sendero existen dos posibilidades de inicio. La primera, desde el mismo aparcamiento acondicionado junto a las ruinas de Baelo Claudia. La segunda desde el Faro Camarinal, al que se puede llegar desde Zahara de los Atunes entrando por la urbanización Atlanterra. El Faro Camarinal, sobre el Cabo de Gracia, es el punto final del sendero, y un lugar privilegiado para apreciar las vistas del Estrecho, y las costas de Tarifa y Zahara de los Atunes. En el ascenso, desde Bolonia, atravesará pinares y eucaliptales sobre arenas estabilizadas y bujeos arcillosos; diversidad de paisajes y con la presencia constante del patrimonio histórico-cultural, como el complejo de Baelo Claudia.

Bolonia · Faro Camarinal

This trail has two possible starting points. The first is from the parking lot next to the ruins of Baelo Claudia. The second is from the Camarinal lighthouse, which is reachable from Zahara de los Atunes by entering the urbanization Atlanterra. The Camarinal Lighthouse, on the Cape of Gracia, is the end point of the trail, and a privileged place to appreciate the views of the Strait and the coast of Tarifa and Zahara de los Atunes. Ascending from Bolonia, the trail passes through pine and eucalyptus forests on stabilized sand and clay; offering diverse landscapes and the constant presence of cultural and historical heritage, such as the complex of Baelo Claudia. Para acceder al sendero deberá llegar a la urbanización Punta Carnero, a través de la carretera CA-224, que parte del k.102 de la N- 340. El inicio se encuentra cerca del antiguo cuartel de carabineros, tomando la primera calle a mano izquierda de la urbanización y recorriendo unos 900m. Recorrerá una de las zonas litorales más impresionantes de la costa andaluza. Surgentes formaciones geológicas acompañan al sendero, como las plataformas de abrasión, o la erosión provocada por el viento en la arenisca. La historia de este tramo litoral está salpicada de la continua relación del hombre con el mar. En definitiva, un lugar único lleno de riqueza, tanto natural, paisajística cómo cultural que merece la pena conocer y conservar.

Punta Secreta · Punta Acebuche

You can access the path from the Urbanization Punta Carnero, via the highway CA-224, which exits at k.102 of the N - 340. The starting point is located close to the old police barracks, taking the first street on the left side of the urbanization and continuing for about 900 m. This trail will take you through one of the most impressive coastal areas of the Andalusian coast. Geological formations accompany the path, such as abrasion platforms and erosion caused by wind on the sandstone. The history of this coastal stretch is punctuated with man’s continuous relationship to the sea. In short, this is a unique place full of natural, scenic, and cultural richness, well worth seeing and conserving. El sendero tiene su inicio en la Ensenada de Bolonia, Tarifa y finaliza en la Duna de Bolonia. El Itinerario discurre por la Playa de Bolonia, sobre una pasarela de madera desde la que se divisa la duna de Bolonia, hacia la que se encamina, pasando por el conjunto Arqueológico de Baelo Claudia. A la izquierda del sendero se bordean los lagoons típicos de las Playas de Tarifa. En estas charcas se encuentra una importante avifauna entre las que destacan los vuelvepiedras. Correlimos, archibebes y gaviotas. El sendero continua adentrándose en el pinar, hasta a los pies de la Duna de Bolonia. La vereda deja el pinar para abrirse de nuevo en la playa, donde se encuentra el final del paseo. Desde aquí, las vistas de la duna resultan impresionantes...

Duna de Bolonia

This trail begins in the Cove of Bolonia, Tarifa, and ends in the sand dune of Bolonia. The route meanders through the beach of Bolonia, on a wooden footpath from which the dune of Bolonia is seen. The path goes through the Baelo Claudia archaeological site towards the sand dune. The left of the trail is bordered by the typical lagoons of the beaches of Tarifa. These ponds protect an important avifauna including Turnstones, Sandpipers, Redshanks and gulls. The trail continues into the pines, at the feet of the Bolonia Dune. The path leaves the pine forest to open again on the beach, where we find the end of the trail. From here, we can visit the majestic dune... Tiene su inicio al final del núcleo de El Lentiscal, en Bolonia y finaliza en el Núcleo de Paloma Baja. El sendero de la Colada de la Reginosa aprovecha la vía pecuaria de la que hereda el nombre, para abrir paso a un itinerario que discurre por pinares-sabinares con manchas de enebros costeros, de gran valor paisajístico y botánico. En el último tramo del sendero podemos acercarnos hasta los restos de piedras de acueducto romano, para finalizar el recorrido en el núcleo rural de Paloma Baja.

Colada de la Reginosa

The trail begins at the end of the center of El Lentiscal, in Bolonia and finishes at the core of Paloma Baja (lower Paloma). The path follows an old livestock trail from which it inherits its name, making a botanically-rich route that runs through pine forests with patches of coastal junipers. In the last stretch of the trail we approach the remains of an ancient Roman aqueduct, finally ending the route in the rural core of Paloma Baja.

actividades Tiene su inicio en el Puerto de Bolonia, carretera CA-8202, que une la carretera N-340 con el núcleo de Bolonia, en el punto kilométrico 71 y finaliza en el Núcleo rural de El Pulido. El sendero discurre en su primer tramo por una vía pecuaria, los pastizales de las zonas altas de la sierra de la Plata y la Sierra de la Higuera. Abunda en esta zona el ganado vacuno y las construcciones rurales con valor etnográfico. El segundo tramo de este sendero discurre por el pie de la Laja de la Zarga o de Las Algas. Atravesaremos bosques de acebuche y encina de gran interés, donde se encuentra el observatorio de una importante colonia de buitres leonados. El tercer tramo atraviesa los acebuchales de las zonas medias de la sierra de La Plata, donde también aparece un abundante y variado sotobosque. El sendero se encuentra en fase de mejora. Bolonia · Pulido

This trail begins in the Port of Bolonia, at kilometre point 71 on highway CA-8202, (which connects the road N-340 with the heart of Bolonia) , and ends at the rural center of El Pulido. The first part of the trail follows a livestock path through high pastures of the Sierra del Plata and the Sierra de la Higuera. Cattle and the interesting rural buildings abound in this area. The second section of this trail passes the foot of the rocky area ‘la Laja en Zarga’ and by ‘Las Algas.’ The trail continues through beautiful Acebuche and Holm Oak forests, which also house an important Vulture Colony Observatory. The third section passes through the middle of the sierra de La Plata, where you can see an abundant and varied undergrowth. The trail is being improved, so to hike the trail or inquire about its current state, please contact the information point of the Natural Park: La Peña (Tarifa) Highway N - 340, Km 77.5 Tlf 697955540. Tiene su inicio en la Necrópolis de los Algarbes, carretera A-2325 que une la carretera N-340 con el núcleo de Punta Paloma o Paloma Baja, en el punto kilométrico 74 y finaliza en la Carretera Ca-2216, por la que se accede al inicio del sendero. Emprendiendo la marcha en la Necrópolis de los Algarbes, uno de los complejos arqueológicos más importantes de la provincia de Cádiz, comienza la subida al núcleo rural de Betijuelo, donde se encuentra el segundo aparcamiento del sendero y comienza el segundo tramo del paseo. Caminando entre las viviendas rurales de Betijuelo, el itinerario sube hasta el punto más alto del recorrido, donde se encuentra un vértice geodésico en el que se disfrutan de unas impresionantes vistas panorámicas. Al reanudar la marcha se desciende por la rambla del Arroyo Puerco. En tan sólo unos pocos metros, el paseo finaliza tras pasar la Casa Forestal. El regreso hasta el aparcamiento de los Algarbes puede hacerlo por la carretera A-2325 o bien dando un paseo por la playa de Valdevaqueros.

Los Algarbes · Betijuelo

The path begins in the necropolis of the Algarbes, road A.-2325, which links the N-340 road with the center of Punta Paloma. It starts at kilometre point 74 and ends at the highway Ca-2216, from which you can also reach the beginning of the path. Nestled in the necropolis of the Algarbes, one of the most important archaeological areas of the Cádiz province, the trail ascends to the rural core of Betijuelo, where we find the second parking for the trail and the second section of the route begins. Walking among the rural houses of Betijuelo, the path rises to the highest point of the route, from which we can enjoy stunning panoramic views. Once upon the trail again, we descend by the Arroyo Puerco (Puerco Stream). After a few meters, the walk ends after passing the Forestry House. You can then return to the Algarbes car park on road A-2325 or by taking a walk along the beach of Valdevaqueros.

En el punto de información del Parque Natural del Estrecho, carretera N-340, Km 77,5. A través de una subida de pequeña pendiente entre pinares, llegaremos al mirador de la Peña, desde donde podremos disfrutar de unas vistas impresionantes: Punta Paloma, ensenada de Valdevaqueros, Los Lances, incluso el Atlas del continente africano, en días claros. Sobre este promontorio rocoso se ubica la torre vigía más antigua de la zona, la Torre de la Peña, al parecer de origen islámico (siglo XIII), construida para controlar el acceso terrestre a Tarifa desde poniente, muestra de un pasado lleno de historia.

La Peña

Start and Finish of the Trail: in the Information Point of the Natural Park of the Strait, on Highway N-340, km 77,5. Route: Ascending a slight slope among pine forests, we reach the lookout ‘Mirador de la Peña,’ from which we can enjoy stunning views: Punta Paloma, Valdevaqueros cove, Los Lances, and on clear days, the outline of the African continent. The oldest lookout tower of the area, La Torre de la Peña, is located on this rocky promontory. Of Islamic origin (13th century), this tower was built to control land access to Tarifa from the west, and is an example of the rich history behind this area. Existen dos opciones de inicio. En el núcleo poblacional de Tarifa, en las proximidades del campo de fútbol, o en la zona conocida El Pozuelo, en la carretera N-340, km 82. Este sendero a modo de pasarela de madera en todo su recorrido, está especialmente adaptado a personas con discapacidad. Un apacible paseo por el humedal de la playa de Los Lances, donde aves límicolas como charranes y charrancitos, chorlitejos, correlimos, vuelvepiedras y archibebes, son los máximos protagonistas del espacio.

Los Lances

There are two options to start the trail : in the town area of Tarifa, close to the football field, or in the area ‘El Pozuelo’, on road N-340, km 82. This walk, being entirely on an easy wooden path, is especially accessible for people with disabilities. A gentle stroll through the wetlands of the Beach Los Lances, where birds such as Terns and little Plovers, Sandpipers, Turnstones, and Redshanks, are the protagonists of this beautiful natural space. Tiene su inicio en Tarifa, pasando el castillo de Sancho IV o Guzmán El Bueno, en las inmediaciones del puerto marítimo y finaliza en la Torre de Guadalmesí. El sendero aprovecha una vía pecuaria costera y atraviesa los acantilados del frente litoral de Tarifa hacia Algeciras. El recorrido centra su interés en las impresionantes vistas del continente africano a lo largo de sus 8 kilómetros, los acantilados y las plataformas de abrasión en las zonas intermareales. A lo largo del mismo es frecuente encontrar bunkers, antiguos cuarteles de la guardia civil y otras construcciones de vigilancia y defensa, que aumentan la intriga del itinerario. Al final del sendero, a la altura de la antigua Torre vigía de Guadalmesí, el observatorio del mismo nombre, nos invita a contemplar el vuelo de las aves que cruzan en el Estrecho hacia el continente hermano.

Colada de la Costa

The route begins in Tarifa, passing the Castle of Sancho IV or Guzman el Bueno, close to the sea Port, and ends at the Tower of Guadalmesí. The trail uses a coastal livestock path and passes through the cliffs of the coastal front of Tarifa towards Algeciras. The route boasts impressive views of the African continent throughout its 8 kilometers, through cliffs and abrasion platforms in intertidal zones. Throughout the route you can find bunkers, former civil guard barracks and other old buildings built for surveillance and defense, which increase the intrigue of the route. At the end of the trail, at the height of the ancient Guadalmesí watch tower, we are invited to contemplate the flight of birds that cross the Strait towards the brother continent...

Looming like some great ship off southern Spain, Gibraltar is a fascinating compound of curiosities and attractions. Despite bobbies on the beat, red post boxes and other reminders of 1960s England, Gibraltar is actually a cultural cocktail with Genoese, Spanish, North African and other elements which have made it fantastically prosperous.

Esta Roca de tan sólo 426 metros de altura nunca ha dejado de ser el centro de atención y a pesar de su tamaño pequeño, siempre ha tenido un papel de gran importancia en la historia europea. Para los antiguos griegos y romanos, este Peñón era una de las dos columnas de Hércules, siendo la otra el Monte Musa en Marruecos. Las dos grandes rocas marcaron el fin del Mundo Antiguo. Los navegantes, llegando hasta aquí, se pararon y observaron el horizonte del Atlántico sin atreverse a cruzar el estrecho. Según ellos la tierra era plana y pensaban que saliendo al océano se habrían caído de la tierra. En la punta occidental de Europa, la ubicación privilegiada de Gibraltar y su naturaleza única nunca han dejado de atraer la mirada codiciosa de estrategas militares y grandes conquistadores. Desde el primer hombre de Neandertal, a través de los griegos, romanos y visigodos, hasta el día de hoy, la posesión de este terreno de tan sólo 6 km2, siempre ha sido causa de discusiones, guerras y batallas.

This 426 metre high rock, despite its small size, has always played a key role in history. For the ancient Greeks and Romans this was one of the two Pillars of Hercules, split from the other, Jebel Musa in Morocco. These two great rocks marked the edge of the Ancient World. Greek and Roman ships that sailed out of the Mediterranean, stopped here and looking at the Atlantic's horizon, they feared they would fall off the edge of the world, as in those days, the earth was thought to be flat. At the Western end of Europe, Gibraltar’s location and highly defensible nature have attracted the covetous gaze of military strategists and famous conquistadors ever since. From the very first Neanderthal man, through the Greeks, the Romans and the Visigoths, people have never stopped discussing the ownership of the 6 square km rock.

Naturalmente, la principal atracción es la Roca imponente, una gran cresta de piedra caliza con acantilados en sus ambos lados. Naturally, the main sight is the awesome rock; a vast limestone ridge with sheer cliffs on both its northern and eastern sides. Most of the Upper Rock, starting just above the town, is a nature reserve with spectacular views and several interesting spots to visit, meanwhile its interior hides a complex tunnel system. Gibraltar’s terrific agenda for visitors includes exploring its natural world such as the Upper Rock, St. Michael’s Cave, Alameda Botanic Garden and Europa Point, its military installations like World War II Tunnels, 100 Ton Gun or Great Siege Tunnels, and its quirky town with the famous Main Street, Casemates Square or Irish Town. Well worth a visit the modern Gibraltar called Ocean Village or the luxury and exclusive Queensway Quay Marina just a few minutes off the busy town centre.

Gibraltar´s monkeys

El macaco de Gibraltar (también conocido como mono de Berbería), posiblemente introducido por los árabes desde el norte de África. Se trata del único primate salvaje que existe en Europa. Aunque son libres para desplazarse por todo el territorio, se suelen aglomerar en la zona del área natural protegida del peñón. Una superstición sostiene que si los monos abandonan el peñón, lo mismo harán los británicos, así que son cuidados por el gobierno local (una situación algo análoga a la de los cuervos de la Torre de Londres).

Most of the Rock's upper area is covered by a nature reserve, which is home to around 230 Barbary Macaques (commonly confused with apes), the only wild monkeys found in Europe. The Macaca sylvanus species, is listed as endangered by the IUCN Red List and is declining. In the Middle Atlas mountains, are the three quarters of world population. Recent genetic studies and historical documents point to their presence on the Rock before its capture by the British. A superstition analogous to that of the ravens at the Tower of London states that if the monkeys ever leave, so will the British.

Fueron un elemento legendario de origen mitológico, situado en el estrecho de Gibraltar y señalaba el límite del mundo conocido, la última frontera para los antiguos navegantes del Mediterráneo. Los griegos conocían bien el Mediterráneo aunque dadas las considerables distancias, sus conocimientos sobre lo que se extendía en el océano Atlántico era más limitado, dando lugar así a leyendas y temores. Bajo el lema «Non Terrae Plus Ultra» los romanos asignaban el confín del continente, que si bien se asoció a Finisterre, también simbolizaba el estrecho de Gibraltar. El nombre original fue acuñado por los fenicios: «Columnas de Melkart», más tarde los griegos las denominaron «Columnas de Heracles» hasta su actual nombre romano. La columna norte (antiguo Kalpe o «Calpe») es identificada con el peñón de Gibraltar (426 m), la identidad de la columna sur (antigua «Abila») ha sido disputada a través de la historia, siendo los dos candidatos más probables el Monte Hacho (204 m), en Ceuta y el Monte Musa (851 m) en Marruecos.

En un arrebato de locura Heracles (Hércules) había matado a sus hijos. Recobrada la razón, el Oráculo de Delfos le había indicado que para purificarse, debería estar al servicio del rey de Tirinto, Euristeo, durante doce años. Habiendo llegado al monarca la fama de los bueyes de Gerión, ser fabuloso que poseía tres cuerpos y que moraba en el Lejano Occidente, y aprovechándose que aún no habían expirado los doce años de servicios, encargó a Heracles que capturase dichos rebaños. El viaje de ida, antes de llegar a Eriteia (una de las antiguas islas sobre las que actualmente se asienta la ciudad de San Fernando) fue pródigo en aventuras y luchas de todo tipo, hasta el extremo que "para conmemorar sus hazañas fueron elevadas las columnas que llevan su nombre, que separan Europa de África. Heracles tomó prestada la Copa de Helios para navegar sobre el océano y llegar a la tierra de Gerión. Mató a éste y regresó al reino de Euristeo con el ganado. Fue Hércules quien separó las dos rocas para abrir el camino al océano Atlántico.

Pillars of Hercules

The Pillars of Hercules was the phrase that was applied in Antiquity to the promontories that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. The northern Pillar is the Rock of Gibraltar in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. A corresponding North African peak not being predominant, the identity of the southern Pillar has been disputed through history, with the two most likely candidates being Monte Hacho in Ceuta and Jebel Musa in Morocco.

Naming

According to Greek mythology adopted by the Etruscans and Romans, when Hercules had to perform twelve labours, one of them was to fetch the Cattle of Geryon of the far West and bring them to Eurystheus; this marked the westward extent of his travels. A lost passage of Pindar quoted by Strabo was the earliest traceable reference in this context: "the pillars which Pindar calls the 'gates of Gades' when he asserts that they are the farthermost limits reached by Heracles." According to Plato's account, the lost realm of Atlantis was situated beyond the Pillars of Hercules, in effect placing it in the realm of the Unknown. Renaissance tradition says the pillars bore the warning Nec plus ultra (also Non plus ultra, "nothing further beyond"), serving as a warning to sailors and navigators to go no further. According to some Roman sources, while on his way to the island of Erytheia Hercules had to cross the mountain that was once Atlas. Instead of climbing the great mountain, Hercules used his superhuman strength to smash through it. By doing so, he connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and formed the Strait of Gibraltar. One part of the split mountain is Gibraltar and the other is either Monte Hacho or Jebel Musa. These two mountains taken together have since then been known as the Pillars of Hercules, though other natural features have been associated with the name. Diodorus Siculus, however, held that instead of smashing through an isthmus to create the Straits of Gibraltar, Hercules instead narrowed an already existing strait to prevent monsters from the Atlantic Ocean from entering the Mediterranean Sea. experienciatarifa.com_11

Impresionante es, también, la cola del cachalote, animal de 18 metros y hasta 50 toneladas que se deja ver entre inmersión e inmersión para alimentarse de los calamares gigantes en profundidades de hasta 1000 metros. Los grupos de Calderones se dejan ver con gran frecuencia, con los cuales podemos intercambiar miradas como si de un saludo se tratase. La orca (Orcinus orca) es el representante de mayor tamaño de la familia de los delfínidos. Pueden alcanzar un tamaño de 9 metros de longitud y un peso de hasta 9 toneladas. En el Estrecho de Gibraltar existen 40 orcas divididas en 5 manadas. La presa fundamental de la orca es el atún rojo (Thunnus thynnus), el cual se introduce durante el final del invierno y primavera en el Mediterráneo para el desove y retorna al océano Atlántico durante el verano después del desove para iniciar de nuevo sus rutas migratorias. Precisamente el atún rojo es el objetivo pesquero principal de la flota artesanal que faena en aguas del Estrecho de Gibraltar, así como de las Almadrabas de Tarifa, Conil, Zahara de los Atunes y Barbate. Las técnicas utilizadas por los pesqueros artesanales son la Almadraba, un laberinto de redes que canalizan al atún hacia el interior de dicho laberinto, denominado el “copo”, donde los atunes son capturados; y el palangre de fondo que consiste en una transa principal unida a una piedra que permite la caída y la ubicación del arte en el fondo.

De las 5 manadas de orca, 2 se observan interaccionando con la pesca de la Almadraba, fundamentalmente en las zonas de Barbate, Conil y Zahara de los Atunes. La estrategia de caza en esta zona es la persecución de la presa hasta que ésta queda exhausta y pueden darle alcance. En ocasiones el atún, en su huida, se aproxima a costa y es canalizado hacia el interior de la Almadraba. Las otras 3 manadas se observan interaccionando con la pesquería del palangre en una zona denominada “las Bajas”, una cordillera submarina que reduce la profundidad de forma muy notable y que por tanto supone el lugar más adecuado para las capturas de atún rojo, tanto por parte de la flota pesquera como de las manadas de orca. Las interacciones, en este caso, se producen de forma más intensa. Las orcas esperan a que las embarcaciones de pesca tengan una captura en sus artes para aproximarse y, antes de que los pescadores puedan subir el atún a cubierta, arrebatar a la presa, de forma que los pescadores, en los mejores casos, sólo pueden ascender parte de dicha captura. Las pérdidas en las pesquerías debido a esta interacción ascienden al 17%, en cambio las orcas se

benefician de esta interacción de modo que el ahorro en costes energéticos para capturar a la presa lo invierten en un mayor crecimiento y en reducir sus intervalos de reproducción. No sólo afecta a la flota artesanal española, sino que la afección se extiende a las pequeñas embarcaciones de marroquíes, cuyas capturas en ocasiones igualan o superan al tamaño de estos pequeños barcos, por lo que tienen que arrastrar a las presas en los laterales de la embarcación a riesgo de que la orca, como en alguna ocasión ha sucedido, les arrebate el atún, escena que recuerda a la relatada por Ernest Hemingway en “el viejo y el mar”. No obstante, la reducción de los stocks de atún rojo amenaza sobremanera la supervivencia de la orca en el Estrecho de Gibraltar.

The Killer and its main prey in the Strait of Gibraltar: the Bluefin Tuna The Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) is the biggest representative of the Delphinid family. It can reach a size of 9 meters and a weight of about 9 tons. In the Strait of Gibraltar there are 40 Killer Whales divided in 5 pods. The main prey of the Killer Whale is the Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus), which migrates during the end of winter and spring to the Mediterranean sea for spawning and return to the Atlantic ocean in summer to start the migratory routes again. The Bluefin Tuna is the main aim of artisanal fishing fleets that work in the waters of the Strait of Gibraltar, as well as the Almadrabas of Tarifa, Conil, Zahara de los Atunes and Barbate. The technique used by artisanal fishing is the Almadraba, a labyrinth of nets that channel the Bluefin Tuna towards the inside of the trap, a space called a “copo”, where the fish is captured, and the bottom longline which consists of

a fishing line unit with a stone that allows the net to fall and position the longline along the bottom. 2 of 5 pods of Killer Whales can be observed interacting with the Almadraba, mainly in Barbate, Conil and Zahara de los Atunes. The hunt strategy in this zone is to chase the prey until it is exhausted and then attack it. Sometimes, when the Bluefin Tuna is on the run, it approaches the coast and gets channeled towards the Almadraba. The other three pods can be observed interacting with the bottom longline in a zone called “las Bajas”, an underwater mountain range which noticeably lessen the depth of the water in this area, making it the easiest place for both fishermen and Killer Whales to capture Bluefin Tuna. This situation then provokes a series of very intense interactions. The killer whales wait until the fishermen have captured

the prey to practically steal it out of their hands. The fishermen, if lucky, only get a part of the catch. Losses in fisheries due to this interaction amount to 17%, however killer whales benefit from this interaction because they save energy capturing the prey, and invert this energy in growth and reduce intervals of reproduction. This situation affects the small Moroccan boats too, whose prey are similar or bigger than the boats, therefore they have to drag the prey tied up on the side of the boat, despite the risk that Killer Whale, as has happened, steal the Bluefin Tuna, a scene that is recounted by Ernest Hemingway in The Old Man and The Sea. However, the reduction of bluefin tuna stocks, is considered an important threat for the survival of killer whale in the Strait of Gibraltar.

La Almadraba un complejo laberinto de redes Cada año desde el inicio de la primavera hasta agosto, atunes que pueden alcanzar 3 metros y 700 kg pasan cerca de la costa del Estrecho de Gibraltar buscando en el Mediterráneo un lugar para desovar. El atún puede vivir hasta 35 años siendo capaz de reproducirse una vez que alcanza entre los cinco y ocho años de edad. A pesar de la presencia de Almadrabas, o trampas de redes, su itinerario no ha cambiado desde hace miles de años. Aunque la procedencia de la palabra Almadraba sea árabe, significa lugar donde se golpea o lucha, su origen es incluso anterior, pues ya los romanos las empleaban para la pesca del atún en estas aguas. Quedan como testimonio de ello las ruinas de Baelo Claudia en la playa de Bolonia del siglo II a.C cuando la pesca, la industria de salazón y el Garúm (salsa derivada del mismo) eran las principales fuentes de riqueza del lugar. Las únicas Almadrabas históricas que perduran en España son las de Barbate, Conil, Zahara de los Atunes y Tarifa, donde cada primavera se preparan para la llegada de los atunes. Todo el proceso, desde la pesca, hasta la elaboración de la conserva se realiza en estas localidades, especialmente en Barbate. Este arte de pesca, ha constituido desde la antigüedad y hasta hoy en día el medio de vida de muchos pobladores de la costa del Estrecho de Gibraltar. Por diversos motivos las capturas han disminuido en los últimos años, quedando en el recuerdo el récord de 1949 con 43.500 ejemplares. Las causas principales del descenso en la población de atunes son la captura por parte de barcos atuneros y la pesca durante la temporada de derecho, justo antes de que se efectúe la puesta y fecundación de los huevos que impide la regeneración de la especie. En el Mediterráneo, la mayor parte de las capturas se lleva a cabo con redes de cerco, y su destino son las granjas de engorde. Estas suministran atún rojo a los mercados asiáticos, fundamentalmente Japón, para el consumo del producto crudo. Casi todas las granjas se concentran en el Mediterráneo central. A pesar de las cuotas de pesca existentes, las reservas de atún rojo, un pez muy valorado por los amantes del sushi han disminuido hasta en un 90% en el Mar Mediterráneo y el Atlántico occidental desde 1970.

Every year from March until August, tuna that can reach up to 3 metres in length and 700 kilo in weight pass near the shore through the Straits of Gibraltar to spawning grounds in the Mediterranean. Tuna can live for up to 35 years and start reproducing upon reaching maturity between the ages of 5 and 8 years of age. Tuna are caught by the traditional method known as Almadraba. This has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. Although the origins of the word Almadraba is Arabic, meaning site of a battle, its source is much earlier as Romans used the same techniques for fishing tuna in these same waters. The second century Roman ruins of Baélo Claudio at Bolonia are a good example of a centre developed to exploit the extensive fishing and production of Garum – a flavouring derived from fermented fish guts. Garum brought great wealth to the town. This last action of hoisting the tuna out of the sea is known as “the raising” and the image to be seen in many photographs around town is typical of this traditional tuna fishing. The only Almadaba that remain in Spain are those of Barbate, Conil, Zahara de los Atunes and Tarifa, where each spring preparations are made for the arrival of the tuna. The entire process, from fishing to canning is also carried out in these localities, especially in Barbate. Fishing provides the livelihood of many villages on the coast of the Gibraltar Straits. The quantity of tuna fished over the years has declined from the record catch in 1949 of 43,500 fish caught. The main cause for the diminishing number of tuna is the over-fishing by the efficient high-tech fishing vessels operating in the area. The fishing of tuna before egg fertilization has been completed has also greatly impeded the regeneration of this species. In the Mediterranean today the majority of the tuna are captured in enclosed nets and taken to fish farms where they are fattened up and then sold on to supply the Asian market, principally Japan. Despite the existing fish quotas, reserves of blue fin tuna, a fish prized by sushi lovers, have fallen by up to 90% in the Mediterranean and the western Atlantic since 1970.

Pasear por tarifa La Puerta de Jerez (1) es uno de los monumentos más emblemáticos e importantes de la ciudad. Tras la conquista cristiana se ampliaron las murallas y se abrió la puerta de Jerez. En el año 2000 fue restaurada, habilitándose un espacio para la colocación del cuadro “El Cristo de Los Vientos” obra del artista Tarifeño Guillermo Pérez Villalta. El escudo situado en la parte superior de la puerta acompaña a la leyenda que recuerda la toma de la ciudad por sancho IV el Bravo en 1292. Saldremos desde la oficina de turismo, sita en paseo de la Alameda, aquí se encontraba la Ermita dedicada a la Virgen del Sol (2), patrona de los marineros. Esta Ermita estaba situada en el solar que hoy ocupa la oficina de Turismo, antigua biblioteca municipal. Nos dirigimos a la izquierda para adentramos en el casco antiguo, pasando por el Mercado de Abastos (3), que funciona como tal desde 1928, aunque data de 1536 como convento. En sus orígenes fue el convento de la santísima Trinidad de los trinitarios descalzos, orden religiosa cuya principal misión era rescatar cautivos de los piratas berberiscos. Seguimos por las Plazas (4): San Martín, San Hiscio, C/del Lorito, C/San Francisco, calle peatonal, turística y típica, en la que podemos contemplar

un número de bares y establecimientos, ideales para la noche tarifeña. Conectando a la izquierda con la Calzada, calle principal de Tarifa, amplia y bulliciosa arteria de la ciudad, donde podremos tomar algo y probar los suculentos pasteles y dulces tarifeños, de reconocido prestigio en la provincia de Cádiz. Observamos la Iglesia de San Mateo (5) , de estructura gótica terminada ya bien entrado el siglo XVI. Conserva algunos cuadros y esculturas barrocas de interés, así como varias obras notables de orfebrería. Frente a su fachada giramos a la derecha y encontramos el Casino y Cárcel Real, Plaza de la Fuente (6) con la primera fuente de agua corriente instalada en Tarifa en el año 1831. Subiendo a la izquierda hasta la Plazuela del Viento se encuentra El Miramar (7), un mirador enclavado en la muralla. También encontramos el Edificio del Ayuntamiento en la Plaza de Santa María o de la ranita (8). Bajando las escaleras y girando a la izquierda, al final encontramos el Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno (9), datado del año 960, por orden del califa Abderraman III, se levantó sobre las ruinas de un posible campamento militar romano. Recientes excavaciones arqueológicas efectuadas en el Castillo han descubierto la existencia de vestigios de la Edad de Bronce, época Púnica, Ibérica, así como del alto y bajo Imperio Romano desde su

etapa inicial republicana. Tras la conquista cristiana por el Rey Sancho IV El Bravo en 1294 se produce el acontecimiento que ha dado renombre mundial a Tarifa. La actitud heroica de Guzmán El Bueno, el cual prefirió sacrificar a su hijo antes de entregar a los musulmanes el castillo que el rey le había confiado. Seguimos por la calle de enfrente donde se ubica la Iglesia de San Francisco (10), de estilo Barroco y Neoclásico. Volviendo al castillo, dejando el puerto a nuestra izquierda seguiremos hacia delante pasando por el puerto pesquero, nos encontramos el Castillo de Santa Catalina (11), construido en la segunda década del siglo XX, siguiendo el estilo neorrenacentista. Parece ser que, antiguamente, allá por el siglo XVI, en el cerro hubiera una ermita. Seguimos hasta adentrarnos en al camino de la isla de las palomas (12), es en esta es donde se encuentra el punto más meridional de Europa, separando el mar Mediterráneo del Atlántico. En el año 1808 se construye el camino de la isla que hasta entonces estaba separada de Tarifa.

La Puerta de Jerez (1) is one of the most emblematic and important monuments of the city, made after the Christian conquest expanded the walls and opened the door of Jerez. In 2000 it was restored, allowing for the painting "El Cristo de Los Vientos" and work of Tarifeño artist Guillermo Pérez Villalta. The shield is located at the top of the door and attached to the legend that recalls the storming of the city by Sancho IV the Brave in 1292. Departing from the tourist office and located in Paseo de la Alameda ist he chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Sol (2), the patron saint of sailors. This chapel was located on the site now occupied by the tourist office and former city library.

Turning left to move into the old town, past the Market (3), which has existed since 1928 and to this day continues, although data from 1536 shows that is served as a convent of the Holy Trinity. Connecting with the main street of Tarifa, a large and bustling thoroughfare of the town, where you can drink and taste the delicious cakes and sweets renowned in Tarifa, and throughout the province of Cadiz.

The Church of San Mateo (5) is Gothic structure completed in the sixteenth century. Here one can find preserved Baroque paintings and sculptures of interest as well as several notable works of jewelry. To the right you can find the Casino, Jail and Plaza de la Fuente (the Fountain Square) (6) where the first source of running water was installed in Tarifa in 1831. Close by is the Plaza del Viento (the windy square) and Miramar (7), a lookout point located at the wall. We also find the Town Hall building in the Plaza de Santa Maria or the frog (8). Heading down the stairs and turning left is the Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno (9) (Castle), dating from the year 960 by order of Caliph Abderrahman III, and originally built on the

En Tarifa el viento protagoniza la vida de sus habitantes. Permite navegar casi todo el año. A continuación te vamos a explicar todo lo que debes saber para moverte con la habilidad de un local. Casi siempre el viento es de levante o poniente. Deberás usarlo o protegerte de él según tu interés. El levante en Tarifa es un viento cálido del este, que alcanza su máxima fuerza al cruzar el Estrecho de Gibraltar. Puede llegar a rachas de 50 nudos. Se necesita experiencia para navegar en estas condiciones. Si lo tuyo es tomar el sol sin terminar sepultado por la arena debes apostar por la protección que te brinda La Caleta, el Arte Vida, Paloma baja y un montón de sitios. El poniente en nuestra localidad viene del mar. Es menos cálido y más constante. El sueño de los kiters es encadenar varios días con un ponientito de 25 nudos. The “levante” in Tarifa is a warm wind blowing from the east, which reaches its maximum strength as it crosses the Strait of Gibraltar. It can reach gusts of 50 knots. One needs plenty of experience to windsurf or kitesurf in these conditions. If you enjoy sun-bathing without getting buried beneath the sand you should choose beaches which offer protection: La Caleta, Arte-Vida, lower-Paloma, and many other sites. The “poniente” in our area comes from the ocean. It is a cooler and more constant wind. A dream for kiters here is to enjoy several days of a 25-knot poniente. Our favourite beaches are:

El bañista puede disfrutar de ella los días de calma y levante flojo. De fácil acceso y cerca de aseos y duchas. Cerca de restaurantes y tiendas de alimentación. 700m situada más al oeste de Río Jara. Debe su nombre a un hotel con restaurante y escuela oficial de deportes náuticos. Para el bañista está más resguardada de los vientos de levante. Balizada en los meses de verano para la práctica de deportes acuáticos. Con restaurantes y chiringuitos. Para llegar a la playa tendremos que bajar unas escaleras.

400m también debe su nombre a uno de los hoteles pioneros de Tarifa. En ella tiene su base la escuela Mistral, lugar emblemático para los windsurfistas de todo el mundo. Al estar resguardada, el bañista puede protegerse de los fuertes vientos de levante. Posee un excelente restaurante. Se accede a la playa por una escalera.

In summer months sailing is only permitted in the designated area. The area of Dos Mares (Two Seas) is perfect for beginner kite and windsurfers and is the most visited by the kiteschools. Here the east wind (levante) comes off the land, therefore it is not a recommended condition for inexperienced riders. Tide changes sometimes cause a large puddle of up to 4 km to form. 3800m de arena fina y oleaje moderado. Es una playa salvaje y el paraíso para el Windsurf. Hacia el lado izquierdo de esta playa podemos encontrar piscinas naturales donde el viento de levante no molesta por estar más resguardada. Caminando un poco llegarás a la zona nudista. A pie de playa encontramos las Ruinas de Baelo Claudia, ciudad Romana del siglo II a.C.

1500m de agua cristalina y arena formada por conchas trituradas. Detrás de la urbanización de Atlanterra encontramos la Playa de los Alemanes. Desde Tarifa accedemos a esta playa por la N-340 hasta Zahara de los Atunes. Seguimos hasta llegar a una cala romántica, localizada frente a una zona residencial de lujo pegada a la montaña. Debemos bajar por una escalera. No dispone de restaurantes ni lugares de ocio a pie de playa, no debemos preocuparnos, están a pocos km en el pueblo de Zahara.

Castillo

de Guzmán el Bueno El castillo de Guzmán el Bueno es el monumento por excelencia de la ciudad de Tarifa. Está situado en una elevación del terreno, frente al mar. De aquí parte la muralla que rodea a Tarifa. Fue construido en piedra en el año 960 por orden del califa Abderramán III, sobre las ruinas de un antiguo poblado romano. El alcázar fue posteriormente ganado por los cristianos, en 1292. Su planta es trapezoidal, situándose en los ángulos torres cuadradas, guardando una distancia de separación equidistante entre ellas, dando impresión de solidez. Su interior está formado por dos patios de armas, separados por una galería de dos plantas. Adosadas a las murallas, existen largas y estrechas naves de carácter militar. La base de la defensa del castillo es la parte superior de las murallas (adarve), rematada con almenas. De las quince torres originales del siglo X, macizas y de altura superior a los

muros, faltan hoy dos del sector este que nunca se reconstruyeron. En el siglo XIV se abrieron ventanas y se levantó una impresionante torre del Homenaje, al sur, que originalmente tuvo el doble de la altura actual. La puerta principal del castillo se encuentra en el frente oeste, defendida por dos torres. En la actualidad el exterior de esta puerta se remata en un arco de medio punto, pero al parecer, fue de herradura en origen. Además, el castillo o alcazaba tiene una puerta más pequeña en el lado este, incluso se ha encontrado otra puerta secundaria más, en la muralla norte, pero tapiada. El castillo de Guzmán el Bueno fue reformado para la defensa de los piratas a principios del siglo XVII. En el siglo XVIII se adaptaron parte de las murallas para la instalación de artillería, y en la actualidad aún tiene uso militar, ya que es propiedad del Ministerio de Defensa. Es de acceso libre y Monumento de Interés Cultural desde 1949.

El Torreón de Guzmán el Bueno fue, para unos, construido por los almohades del siglo XII, para otros ya por los cristianos en el siglo XIV. Se trata de una torre albarrana (separada del castillo y unida a él mediante una muralla -coracha- de unos 40 metros). Es de planta octogonal, hasta el siglo XIX medía 20 metros de altura pero en la actualidad está igualada a la muralla. La torre quedaba en una de las esquinas del recinto amurallado. Esta torre fue construida en argamasa, y se la conoce por el nombre de torre de Guzmán el Bueno, en honor a este personaje. La historia cuenta que dejó que degollaran a su hijo - incluso él mismo facilitó el puñal - antes que entregar la plaza. Junto a la puerta del castillo, a los pies de la torre octogonal hay un monumento dedicado a Sancho IV en el VII centenario de la toma de Tarifa.

The Tower

of Guzmán el Bueno The Castle of Guzmán el Bueno is the most important historical monument of the city of Tarifa. It is located on an elevated terrain facing the sea. The historical wall surrounding Tarifa begins here. The castle was built in stone in the year 960 by order of Caliph Abd ar-Rahman III, on the ruins of an ancient Roman settlement. The Alcázar was subsequently won by the Christians in 1292. The castle’s base is trapezoidal, with square towers at the corners, built with an equal distance of separation between them to give an impression of solidity. Its interior consists of two courtyards of arms, separated by a two-story Gallery. Attached to the walls, there are long, narrow naves of a military nature. The basis of the defense of the castle is the top of the walls (adarve), topped with battlements. Of the fifteen massive original towers of the 10th century, which rose higher than the walls, there are two missing which were never rebuilt. In the 14th

century windows were opened and an impressive Tower of homage was erected towards the South, originally twice its current height. The main gate of the castle is located on the Western front, defended by two towers. Currently the outside of this gate ends in a semicircular arch, but was reportedly horseshoe-shaped in origin. In addition, the castle or fortress has a small door on the East side, within which another secondary door was found, within the North wall, but it was found covered. The castle of Guzmán el Bueno was reformed for defense from pirates in the early 17th century. In the 18th century a section of the walls was adapted for the installation of artillery. The castle currently maintains its military nature and is owned by the Ministry of Defense. It has been open to public access and has been considered a Monument of Cultural Interest since 1949.

The Tower of Guzmán el Bueno is considered by some to have been built by the Almohads in the 12th century, while others believe it was built by Christians in the 14th century. It's an ‘albarrana’ Tower; independent from the Castle but joined by a wall – ‘coracha’ -of about 40 meters). It is octagonal, and until the 19th century measured 20 metres in height but currently equals the height of the wall. The tower was one of the corners of the walled enclosure. This tower was built in mortar, and is known by the name of ‘TheTower of Guzmán el Bueno,’ in honor of “Guzman the Good.” Legend says that he allowed the Arab invaders to kill his son, even offering the dagger himself, rather than deliver the square to them. Beside the door of the Castle, at the foot of the octagonal tower, there is a monument dedicated to Sancho IV and the 7th century conquest of Tarifa.

Antigua Ciudad Romana La antigua ciudad romana de Baelo Claudia está situada en la Ensenada de Bolonia a unos 22 km al noroeste de la ciudad de Tarifa. El estudio de sus restos arquitectónicos muestra su origen romano a finales del siglo II a. C., observándose ya desde esa época una gran riqueza que la convierte en un centro económico importante dentro del área del Mediterráneo. La ciudad nace a finales del siglo II a. C. sobre un asentamiento feniciopúnico más antiguo (Bailo, Baelokun), y su existencia está muy relacionada con el comercio con el norte de África (era el principal puerto marítimo que enlazaba con la ciudad de Tánger en Marruecos). Es posible que Baelo Claudia tuviera algunas funciones de centro administrativo, pero la pesca, la industria de salazón y el garum (una salsa derivada del mismo) fueron las principales fuentes de riqueza. El emperador romano Claudio le conce-

dió el rango de municipium (municipio romano). La vida de estas poblaciones alcanzó pleno esplendor entre los siglos I a. C. y II d. C., iniciándose su decadencia a partir de segunda mitad del siglo II, cuando un gran maremoto arrasó gran parte de la ciudad. A sus desastrosos efectos se sumaron la crisis del siglo III y las incursiones de hordas de piratas, fundamentalmente mauritanos y germanos. Aunque experimentó un ligero rebrote en el siglo III, la ciudad fue abandonada definitivamente en el siglo VII. En el yacimiento se conservan los elementos más representativos que constituían la esencia de una ciudad romana; ésta contaba con una cerca o muralla, edificios de carácter administrativo como la curia (senado local) o el archivo municipal, una plaza pública (foro), un palacio de justicia (basílica judicial), situado en el foro frente a los templos, tiene planta rectangular y mide 19,5 por 35,5 metros, estaba presidida por una estatua del emperador Trajano de más de tres metros de altura.

Cuatro templos: tres dedicados a cada uno de los componentes de la Tríada capitolina (Júpiter, Juno y Minerva) y uno dedicado a la diosa egipcia Isis, relacionado al culto isíaco en la península, descubierto recientemente por un grupo de arqueólogos del histdeutsch. El mayor edificio de Baelo Claudia es el Teatro, donde todos los actores eran hombres, incluso en los papeles de mujeres, que para interpretar se colocaban máscaras, según fuese el personaje que representaban. También pueden verse restos de las tiendas (tabernae); el mercado (macellum), recinto cerrado destinado a la venta de carne y comestible en general y formado por catorce tiendas y un patio interior, las termas (termae) y el teatro. El conjunto arqueológico está acompañado desde 2007 de un museo.

The Ancient Roman City Winter timetables

The ancient Roman city of Baelo Claudia is located in Bolonia about 22 miles northwest of the city of Tarifa. The study of its architectural remains show its Roman origin from the late second century C. and since then it maintained a wealth which made it an important economic center in the Mediterranean. A Phoenician-Punic settlement (Bailo, Baelokun), its existence is closely related to trade with North Africa (it was the main sea port that connected with the city of Tangier in Morocco). Claudia Baelo may have had other functions for this administrative center, but the fishing, salting industry and garum (a sauce derived from it) were the main sources of wealth. The Roman Emperor Claudius made it part of the Municipium and therefore a Roman town. The life of these populations reached

full bloom between I a. C. and II d. C., but began to decline after the second half of the century, when a large tsunami devastated much of the city. Hordes of pirates, mostly Mauritanians and Germans, also followed these disastrous effects and added to the crisis of the third century. Although it experienced a slight rebound in the third century, the city was finally abandoned in the seventh century. In this site are the remains of the most representative elements that constitute the essence of a Roman city. It had a fence or wall, administrative buildings and the Curia (local senate), the municipal archives, a public square (board), a palace of justice (judicial basilica) which, located at the front of the temples, is rectangular and measures 19.5 by 35.5 meters and was dominated by a statue of the Emperor Trajan over three meters high.

Four temples, three devoted to each of the components of the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva) and one dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis, related to the cult Isiaca on the peninsula, were recently discovered by a group of archaeologists. The largest building is the Theatre Claudia Baelo where all the actors were men, even in the roles of women, wearing masks to interpret the character they represented. Also visible are the remains of the shop (tabernae) market (macellum), originally enclosed for the sale of meat and food in general, and consisting of fourteen stores and an interior courtyard, spa (thermae) and theater. This archaeological site and cultural property is accompanied by a museum, built in 2007, designed by architect Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra.
