EVER SINCE THE INSIDER was born, it’s been customary for us to dedicate one issue annually to the Best of Warsaw: a marquee edition celebrating the best cafes, restaurants and bars that the city has to offer. Increasingly, however, that’s proven problematic. Why? Well, because whilst it might make sense to present this roll call of greats at the end of each calendar year, doing so largely overlooks the city’s summer happenings – think about it, it’s neither smart nor relevant to be talking about beer gardens or restaurant rooftops at a time when Santa’s elves are making their deliveries. Yet by overlooking these, we’ve consistently failed to recognise one of the city’s biggest charms – that being, the outburst of energy that grips it each summer. With that in mind, we’ve broken from our own established norms to dedicate our July outing to finding the Best of Summer. In the pages beyond, we’re delighted to reveal all the places that make a difference – the ones that truly evoke the season’s biggest buzzes. Hope you enjoy it, and see you next month.

Best of Summer 2023

As suffocating as Warsaw can become, it’s impossible not to love summer in this city. Distinguished by its crackling atmosphere, at no other time does the capital feel more alive. With that in mind, we’re delighted to present the stars of the season in our Best of Summer issue…

2 Warsaw Insider | JULY
2023

MEET YOU AT...

For the definitive Warsaw experience, the capital offers up a medley of options. Entrenched in local folklore, we pick out the meeting spots that everyone needs to know – and why!

Cuda Na Kiju

The overbearing block that stands at Nowy Świat 6/12 once famously housed the Communist Party Headquarters. Well, it’s lost the communism, but kept the party. In the courtyard, find a battalion of millennials spilling from the nearby clubs to cavort around the fountain. More chilled out, head out to the front with the grownups, and to an area decked out with hundreds of deckchairs overlooking the iconic palm tree on the street outside. With a craft beer in hand from Cuda Na Kiju (Warsaw’s first tap bar), it’s the epitome of this city at sunset.

MEET YOU AT...

Norblin Factory

Żelazna 51/53

Without fail, the big winner of the summer has been Norblin Factory – hell, we’ve even spotted the coolest man on the planet, Kieran Culkin, ambling around here with his family! But why exactly has it become such a major, city-wide attraction?

Best of the Best

We could easily talk about the luxury KinoGram cinema with its champagne vending machines, cultural hotspots such as the immersive ArtBox Experience or the legendary BioBazar – the pioneering farmers’ market loved by every foodie. But whilst these details and venues have undoubtedly enriched the Norblin Factory experience, it is above all else the atmosphere that has charmed the Polish capital and acted as the most unique selling point of all.

Occupying a 19th century metalware factory, the meticulous (and miraculous) restoration of this former industrial plant has to be seen to be believed (and wouldn’t you guess, you can find out more about this heritage and background at the Factory Museum). Cutting through its heart though, find a street lined with outdoor seating and venues such as the elite MOXO restaurant and music club, the craft-minded Uwaga and the effortlessly glamorous Piano Bar. Lit at nighttime by an overhead trail of blue lights, it’s become the sexiest street in Warsaw – a cosmopolitan catwalk whose ambiance is lifted even further by the sounds of live music that whisper all around. Mixing elements of the past, present and future, it is representative of everything that makes the city great, and in this way it’s become the dynamic face of summer 2023.

MEET YOU AT...

Nocny Market

Nocny Market brings together dozens of food vendors to form a patchwork of uber cool traders and hip little stands. But more than just an ultra-fun collection of ethnic cook-up spots, the Nocny Market has become the place to get tattooed in front of hollering strangers, stock up on artisan donuts, swag some crazy-patterned Warsaw-themed socks, get the whiskers waxed or simply boogie on down to side-burned DJs rescued from the Lost Years of Hipster. That this happens on a disused train platform lit by funky strips of neon lends this weekend market-party a unique energy.

Postępu 5

Poniatówka

Of Warsaw’s clutch of river-side bathing spots, then Poniatówka at the base of Poniatowski Bridge is easily the city’s fave – you know summer has officially started from the first moment you cross the bridge by tram and see hundreds of sunbathers dotted down below. Sitting practically in the shadow of the National Stadium, bringing a bag of beers here and watching the sun dip down is a local rite of passage.

Poznańska

Exciting things are happening in the office district more commonly known as Mordor, and by in large they’re happening in Postępu 5. Set around rows of disused garages, these have been infilled by a selection of vendors and food outlets that represent a radiant burst of light for the office droids more familiar with cellophane wrapped sandwiches and ready meals. And beyond good food, it’s become a place in which to gather in and savour.

Lined with pre-war tenements – some still bearing the scars of battle, and other buffed and beautified to their original best – the city’s south-central fragment has flourished over the last decade. The social radar beeps loudest on Poznańska where you’ll find a fleet of vibrant hangouts operating alongside artisanal stores selling hats and brushes, antique galleries and art studios. Highlights are many and include the 80s-themed VHS (say hi to The Hoff in the toilet), Tel Aviv, the evergreen Beirut-Kraken and late night San Escobar. With the party often carrying onto the street, it’s summertime Warsaw at its best.

6 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023

Elektrownia Powiśle

Acting as a natural buffer between the riverfront and the rest of Powiśle, Elektrownia’s biggest advantage is its proximity to the water. Just steps away from both the metro and the Copernicus Science Centre, this makes it a natural gathering spot – outside, that means taking a place on the immaculate lawn by the front with the fountain tinkling away. The back, too, has also been opened up to feature an array of shaded seating as well as rooftop perches crowning the plush Dock 19.

Browary Warszawskie

Browary has utilised the surviving elements of the 19th century Haberbusch & Schiele brewery and set them against a backdrop of freshly mapped streets and fresh new build that feel contextually suited to the area. Assuming the feel of a swanky micro-district, this feeling runs particularly high around the woonerf that runs through the development, as well as a sunken plaza that finds itself framed by the Food Hall, a flagship brewpub and various other F&B points. Decked with greenery, and featuring a towering brick archway that affords protection from summer downpours, it’s simply a stunning space to enjoy.

warsawinsider.pl 7

Gatsby

Elektrownia Powiśle

Evoking the decadent spirit of the Roaring Twenties, it’s not just the drinks of Urszula Trochimiak and Karol Rychlewic that have impressed, but also a program of events that include jam sessions, jazz concerts, DJ sets and weekly English comedy nights. Set in an atmospheric basement, they’re also rolling out Gatsby Rooftop in time for July – more next issue!

Zaremba

Nowogrodzka 15

Black and white photos referencing the history of this former gentleman’s atelier gaze from the walls onto a compact interior heaving with brass, terrazzo and blue velvet finishes. A café by day, come evening Zaremba moves into cocktail territory with sophisticated drinks crafted from premium components. Overlooking the corner of lively Nowogrodzka, the wooden deck affords prime people watching opportunities.

Republica San Escobar

Poznańska 7

Run by the maverick Funky Fluid brewery, San Escobar feels like the odd one out on this list – lacking airs and graces, it’s a place where fun rules the roost. Tiny in size, find an interior filled with corrugated iron sheets, zappy neons, chunky woods and bike pedals on the footrests. The fun-loving spirits is irresistible, and the tight dimensions mean the party often spills onto the terrace outside.

MOXO

Norblin Factory

Many will remember 2023 as the year Warsaw fell back in love with the luxury lifestyle. Of the upscale openings, none made a bigger splash than the bar-club crossover MOXO, an exclusive space featuring Poland’s tallest bar (12 metres!), Nikkei cuisine, and a stringent door policy aimed at keeping the riff raff at bay.

Grace

Krucza 16/22

Split into different areas, each with its own dark and voluptuous colour scheme, the sensual, velvety Grace mixes an air of 80s excess with a design that verges on bordello chic. Operating as a late night cocktail spot, the drinks are highly affordable despite the premium clientele.

TREND

Japanese

Happa To Mame

Hoża 43/49

Don’t look for a sign, rather for the queue that wraps its way around the corner. Specialising in matcha teas, the menu also includes dango rice balls and daifuku mochi filled with seasonal delicacies. Split in two rooms, the one that gets the most attention touts illuminated mesh-wired installations that hang like clouds. For sure, one of the most viral openings of the year!

Niigata Onigri

Noakowskiego 8

Just steps from the Polytechnic, Niigata’s street-side window serves out one of Warsaw’s favourite lunch-on-the-run solutions from a hatchway decorated with cute, waving kittens. Wrapped in plastic, pop by for creative, handheld rice balls that come in vegan and non-vegan options. The spicy Akuma is a fave, though for the classic bestseller select the sake-seasoned roasted salmon.

Achi Achi

Jana Pawła 41A

This lively little joint gives Japanese food a new spin with its presentation of on-the-dash fried foods served in various combinations. Topped with swirls and slashes of mayo and ‘secret spicy sauce’, the JFC (Japanese Fried Chicken) is a particular big-seller and addictively more-ish. On the beverage front, plunge into the unknown by ordering a fruit-flavored soju.

Sakebar by Nobu

Wilcza 73

Noriko

Mińska 45

With just eight seats and one sitting per day, reservations aren’t recommended, they’re compulsory. Priced at PLN 750 per head, the cost is reflective of what many call a one-in-a-million experience and the most exceptional sushi dinner that the country has ever seen. Although open just a few months, it’s impossible to believe that Warsaw will ever see a better standard.

Filled with light during the day, come dusk the curtains sweep shut to close guests off from the outside world. Sensual fragrances waft around, complementing a luxury menu touting bottles of craft sake that peak at PLN 3,000. Fixed by smart staff, cocktails are also prominent and include the refreshingly aromatic Summertime Sadness. It’s the final word in luxury Japan.

ICE CREAM

Best of the Best

AUTHENTIC GELATO

Dal Dalla Gelato

Leszczyńska 4

Meet Luca Dalla Costa, a former marketing bod that woke up one day and said, “f**k it, I’ll open a gelateria!” Working on a trial and error approach, he’s mixed Venetian techniques with the freshest ingredients to create a magic world where weaknesses don’t exist – even making his own savoiardi biscuits for the tiramisu ice cream, Luca’s passion is only beaten by the quality of the end product.

HEALTH & BEAUTY IN NORBLIN FACTORY

ICE CREAM

FOR DOGS

Limoni

Various locations inc.

Dąbrowskiego 1

Limoni were part of the first wave of pioneers that revolutionised Warsaw’s ice cream scene, and to this day they remain a favourite of the public – dogs as well. Serving lactose- and sugar-free dog friendly ice cream made from soy milk and vegetable cream, find it available in blueberry and honey-banana flavours (and yes, it’s fit for human consumption as well!).

VEGAN

Vegestacja

Poznańska 26

Known as the vegan square mile on account of its proliferation of vegan restaurants and cafes, it’s no surprise to find that this area of south central Warsaw is also home to a vegan gelato stop (‘vegelato’). The sugar-free creations include essential orders such as mango lassi or raspberry & cardamom. It vibes pretty perfectly with the area’s indy undercurrent.

UP NORTH

Ulica Baśniowa

Wojska Polskiego 41

The choice isn’t just vast, it’s sugar-free thanks to their commitment to using natural stevia instead of artificial, synthesized nasties. Few leave with anything but rave reviews, and their cause is furthered by an equally impressive choice of cakes and tarts. Everyone in Żoliborz seems to have visited, and you should as well – if it’s in stock, try the lime.

LEGENDARY CHAIN

Good Lood

Various locations

Born in Kraków in 2016, Good Lood have flourished to become a nationwide phenomenon. Sugar- and lactose-free, their milky ice creams and natural sorbets go beyond expectations to showcase consistently great – and occasionally adventurous – flavours free from colourants and enhancers. With 30 outposts to visit around the country, check their web for your nearest location: goodlood.com.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Tłusty Kotek

Hoża 51

Set within an old dairy plant, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find The Fat Cat appearing on every rundown of local ice cream faves. The choice here is narrower than most, but the quality is A-Class. Squeezed inside a pair of cookies, the ice cream sandwich is an essential order. More than just ice cream, combine your ice cream with high quality specialty coffee.

ITALIAN TRADITION

Pallone

Brzeska 29/31 / Francuska 31 / Polna 30A / Puławska 51

Made to Italian recipes reputed to be 160-years old (with some personal magic thrown in), Pallone pride themselves on quality ingredients: chocolate from Belgian and Colombia, citrus fruits from Sicily, and the finest cream and milk you’ll find in Poland. There’s nothing too wacky about the flavour choice but the tastes will punch you out.

16 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023

WILD TASTES Ice

Pot

Soczi 6B

Although their legendary stand at Hala Gwardii has disappeared along with Gwardii’s food hall, Ice Pot addicts can still get their fix down south. Produced by a true enthusiast, the seasonal flavours and occasionally wacky experiments (mulled wine, apple pie, etc.) never score less than a perfect ten. Of their wilder successes, the pear with honey stands especially tall.

RITE OF PASSAGE Na Końcu Tęczy

Al. Wyzwolenia 15 & Elektrownia (ul. Dobra 42)

Named in honour of the rainbow that once stood dead centre of Pl. Zbawiciela, this vibrant spot occasionally likes to push the envelope when it comes to flavours, but it’s the fruity tastes that seem to work the best: the kiwi mascarpone is another level, as is the apple sorbet. Lines can stretch on the weekend, but that’s all part of the experience.

SOUTHERN LEGEND

Jednorożec

Narbutta 38

Amid a hugely competitive field, the wide flavor choice, quality ingredients and loving hand of Jednorożec mark them a notch above their immediate competitors in Mokotów. With a rotating roster of around 30 flavours to try, find your ice cream served with a miniature cone perched at a jaunty angle on top of your scoop.

THE INSIDER’S FAVORITE!

Cukiernia

Sosenka

Saska 105

SUNDAY STROLLING Lourse

Krakowskie Przedmieście 13

(Raffles Europejski Warsaw)

Ever since its launch in the 19th century, the Europejski Hotel has been known for its elegant patisserie – the Lourse. Revived by Raffles, there’s no better indulgence after promenading up the Royal Route on a bright, sunny day. Also available from a vintage cart stood outside, we can vouch for their deliciously luxurious apricot flavour.

FOR THOSE THAT LIKE IT HOT

Roszki

Andersa 37

Feminine and pink on the inside, most order their scoop before enjoying it outside sat on the concrete steps. Crowd favourites number the creamy mango lassi, though it’s their chocolate-based temptations that represent their strongest suite. In this regard, consider their chocolate habanero as the unique selling point – coming with a fiery twist, it’s got a cheeky punch that will tickle the tonsils.

A mainstay of Saka Kępa, Sosenka’s non-descript look belies the flavours –changing frequently to reflect the season, these run from localgrown fruit tastes to more unusual exotica such as lemongrass and ginger (Tajska). For much the same offer, plus lashings of frozen yoghurt drizzled with fruit, check their wooden cabin on Francuska 30 –you’ll see the queue before you see the place.

18 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023
ICE CREAM

Filmowa Stolica

Better late than never. Though a little tardy in announcing their plans, Filmowa Stolica are the biggie that everyone loves. Organising screenings in several locations around town, past venues have included Royal Wilanów, POLIN, Saski Park, the horseracing track, Kępa Potocka and many more besides. To see what plans they’ve cooked up this year, check filmowastolica.pl over the coming weeks.

Community Hubs

Pretty much all of the major social hubs have something up their sleeves, though for the very best spots check out the square at Browary Warszawskie, the plaza at Centrum Praskie Koneser and the pleasingly green idyll at Elektrownia Powiśle. Announcing their screenings a few weeks in advance on their respective social media platforms, expect all to offer a diverse program that considers both families and arty adults.

Wyświetl Film

Offering a more arthouse program than most, Wyświetl Film have booked several park spaces and suchlike for the coming weeks, among them Park Hassów (Ursus) and Park Górczewska (Bemowo). Featuring also events in Mokotów and Ochota, for further details on open-air screenings check wyswietlfilm.pl.

SUMMER CINEMA

IN THE AIR SPOTS

Loreta

Widok 9 (Puro Hotel)

Loreta channels the spirit of this design-led hotel brand through its funky décor and eclectic art. The terrace, though, is the clincher. As night falls, retreat to an enclosed balcony deck signposted by a neon the colour of bubblegum pink; here, amid cascading greenery and low-slung seating, join other cocktail hounds enjoying inventive house sips that use best-inclass ingredients.

20 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023

Ether

Chmielna 71 (NYX Hotel)

Positioned so you catch the best of Warsaw’s peachy sunsets falling over the Central Business District, watching the night slide in can be an almost empowering experience from this 19th floor bar. Cocktail bills are easily accrued when enjoying one of their open-air concerts, but whilst this place packs out easily, secluded corners can usually be uncovered.

The Roof

Rondo Daszyńskiego 2 (The HUB) Offering thrilling 21st floor views from one of Wola’s newer towers, The Roof’s sleek furnishings, well-deployed plants and spherical lights cast a cool look that act in concert with a setting that feels fantastically affluent –but as beautiful as the interior is, it’s the outdoor deck that’s easily the biggest draw of this upscale cocktail bar.

Havana

Słowackiego 16/18

Forget the George Clooney lookalikes that dwell in Warsaw’s other sky bars, you’re more likely to find local versions of Pete Doherty. The least dressiest of our selection, this neighborhood legend has a design that rhymes well with the 60s tower it’s found in. The views are pretty uninspiring (a tramline and some kiosks), but the vibe is something special.

warsawinsider.pl 21

Belle Epoque

Krakowskie Przedmieście 42/44 (Bristol Hotel)

Available only for private bookings, the seventh floor Belle Epoque is the final word in luxury – Warsaw has elite-minded rooftops, but none can offer the privacy and exclusivity of this elegant cupola. Specialising in champagne-based cocktails, it's ideal for moonlit proposals or small-scale gatherings when you want to impress.

Sen

Wioślarska 6

Woah – the number of good lookers that flock here is simply off-the-scale. Don’t dare use the words “you should be a model” as a chat-up line, for the answer you’ll receive is “actually I am”. Set on the top floor of a riverside development, the open terrace of this A-list club offers even more to feast your eyes on: the twin sight of the National Stadium and Poniatowski Bridge.

Szóstka

Pl. Powstańców Warszawy 9 (Hotel Warszawa)

Head to Floor 6 for there lies Szóstka, a long, slick restaurant decorated with steel tubing, bursts of greenery and a covered glass ceiling. But it’s outside where everyone heads, to a sparsely furnished terrace with killer views of the city below. Clinking glasses out here is the ultimate sunset moment with the tasting menu offering an exciting array of adventurous global tastes.

22 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023
THE
IN
AIR SPOTS

Chopin Taras Café

Smolna 14

Accessed via an old elevator, reservations for the rooftop seating are recommended to avoid disappointment. More creaky and atmospheric than its glossy competitors, the fourth floor Chopin Taras Café has earned a name for jazzy concerts that take place among the plant boxes.

Amar Beirut

Norblin Factory

If you can overlook such flaws as the painfully overwhelmed service, then Amar is one of the standouts of 2023 – luxuriously exotic interiors, fantastic Lebanese food and interesting cocktails all point to much potential. Then there’s the rooftop, an intimate L-shaped space with views not just of Warsaw’s skyscrapers, but also the magically atmospheric Pasaz Norblin down below.

Dock 19

Dobra 42

Unlikely to induce vertigo, this first floor rooftop is a favourite with the local glitterati. Its height ensures you’re at treetop level and that alone makes for an atmosphere that feels tangibly connected to the hip Powiśle vibe. For food and drink, ‘light and seasonal’ are the guiding principles whilst the look feels almost redolent of a luxury cruiser.

warsawinsider.pl 23

Baken

Żurawia 6/12

Baken feels like a merger between the chic streets of Paris and the cosy corners of Copenhagen, with its delectable breads and inviting atmosphere hitting the sweet spot between French and Danish charm. The energy is conducted through an open kitchen and expressed via handsome staff clad in white t-shirts. The scrambled eggs are a must, so too are the plum Crêpes Suzette.

Kubuś Piekarenka

Marszałkowska 19

Trending big this summer is Kubuś, one more breakfast / lunch / café / bakery crossover to add to Warsaw’s ever-growing list. Looking fashionably ad hoc with bare, distressed walls decorated with fleeting bits of wall art, people gather for choices such as mackerel pasta and crispy breads piled with gooey regional cheese, creamy scrambled eggs and oyster mushrooms. Outstanding.

Lychees

Bielańska 1

From the creators of Peaches comes this brill brunch spot. Design-wise, the pair’s taste for cool is unmissable and surmised by a wall of glazed ceramic tiles from Holland’s GBD.studio. The experimental dishes include a great congee served with cashew butter glazed in muscovado and their own unique take on French toast. Lines at the door are not unknown, but all agree it’s worth the wait.

Stolica Café

Narbutta 50A

Previously known for Gothic Café in Malbork, Boguś Gałązka has kicked up a storm in Warsaw with this fab venture, a place where artisanal breads compete against inventive takes on shakshouka, English vegan fryups, and pancakes splashed with season fruit and rich raspberry sauce. Housed in the arthouse, Socialist Realist era Kino Iluzjon, the scene is suitably hip and Insta-friendly.

BRUNCH

24 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023

LIVE MUSIC

Chmury / Hydrozagadka

11 Listopada 22

Set in a fleapit courtyard covered in wall art – itself an alternative summertime attraction – it’s hard to tell where Chmury ends and Hydrozagdka begins. Seemingly both spiritually cojoined, much of that connection has been forged through their devotion to eclectic live music. Tight and crowded, it’s a place where audience and band become one, feeding off each other to generate an electrifying atmosphere.

Pardon To Tu

Al. Armii Ludowej 14

Jassmine

Wilcza 73 (Nobu Hotel)

Subtle but enthralling in its design, its darkness is penetrated by dozens of orblike table lamps and overhead lights that bring to mind a spectacular star fall. Sophisticated cocktails and excellent acoustics make gigs here a pleasure: and yes, the jazz names that have played here have been second to none.

Młodsza Siostra

Dobra 14/16

Smuggled inside a scruffy courtyard fringed by lock-up garages, this alt. space has shades of Berlin and Budapest with its underlying feeling of artsy cool. Within, it’s a creaky spot filled with wobbly furnishing and maverick sounds. At times claustrophobic, the dimensions lend themselves well to intimate gigs that see everything from improvised instrumentals to concerts from the likes of the Death Addict Society.

Around five years have passed since Pardon settled into their new (and substantially more salubrious) surroundings and the place is at last starting to really feel like home. The air of unforced cool is unmatched in Warsaw and largely credited to a musical menu committed to obscure ethnic and jazzy sounds. The terrace, strung with overhead bulbs, has been expanded out to cater for the increasing numbers of punters.

Piano Bar

Żelazna 51/53 (Norblin Factory)

Crowned with a show-stealing 12-foot chandelier that dangles from the ceiling of this dual-level structure, Piano Bar’s character oozes a sense of confident prosperity. It’s a must all year around, but it’s even better in summer when smooth, jazzy performances take place outside. Drifting around Norblin’s passageway, the sounds add extra sparkle to the crackling atmosphere.

Designer Outlet Warszawa

Puławska 42E, Piaseczno

For a look that steals the summer, Designer Outlet Warszawa offers a series of stores that bring to you some of the world’s top designers at discounted prices: and by that, we’re talking about reductions that range from 30% to a whopping 70%. Choose from over 130 brands in a beautiful complex that was built to mimic the Baroque style of Warsaw’s Old Town. Found south of the city just 30-minutes from the centre (and 20-minutes from the airport), it’s quite an experience to walk such a strikingly pretty project whilst browsing for premium, cut-price brands.

STREET FOOD

Senor Lucas

Poznańska 26

Carrying the atmosphere of a busy taqueria, a fair degree of chaos reigns with unruly queues, beeping table buzzers, loud groups and even louder music. Yet despite the racket Senor Lucas remains a deeply enjoyable experience, and that’s directly attributed to brick-like burritos, tacos and rolled quesadillas filled with lots of juicy flavour contrasts. This is one of Warsaw’s favourite Mexican treasures, and for good reason.

Delhi 6

Jana Pawła 41A

Tight, narrow and even a little dingey, the non-standard menu features curry rolls wrapped in delicious parathas, crispy fried puffs and pungent tawas. The experience is enhanced by this spot’s busy, clattery atmosphere. The Bollywood beats just about drown out the sound of gossiping Indian food couriers – but they’re not here to collect food for delivery, here on their breaktime to eat it themselves. That says all there is to say.

Chimi & Churri

Grzybowska 4

An intimate alcove sparingly decorated with a map of Argentina and a miniature Argentine flag, the empanadas here have earned a place in legend. Praised for their authenticity by the city’s South American population, these pasty-like pockets of flaky goodness come with a variety of stuffings, among them Argentine beef with Malbec, and the equally fantastic pork and mango sauce. Follow-up with Alfajores cookies filled with dulce de leche.

28 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023

PollyPizza NEOpolitan

Puławska 24

Spliced with a glitzy leopard-shaped pizza cutter, the pies at Polly have attained quite a following ever since this place burst onto the scene. Featuring CBD oil, the Legalize Marinara is indicative of their slightly wacky and experimental approach to Neapolitan traditions – as too is a creativ interior design that includes disco balls, cord banquettes, neons and other retro-cool touches.

PIZZA

LITTLE NAPOLI

Warsaw has long loved pizza, the difference being that back in the old days it looked and tasted like strips of cardboard dunked in ketchup. Now, a pizza revolution has been foisted on us, with the line led by relative veterans such as Ciao a Tutti and Mąka i Woda. Lately, these have been supplemented by, among others, Nonna, Franco and Pizzaiolo. But for our favourite, look no further than the perfect Polly!

THE WISŁA

It’s amazing to think now,

but not long back the state of the Wisła was an open source of shame – the best thing that could be said for it in the early 00s was that it acted as a natural buffer between the rest of the city and the then savage wildlands of Praga.

Now fully absorbed into the city, the regeneration of the left bank ranks as one of Warsaw’s greatest accomplishments of the last decade; ironically, though, it has been the quest to connect it to Praga that has dampened its spirit this year – with work on a pedestrian footbridge still ongoing, the construction zone has acted as a disruptive force by temporarily cutting the flow of people walking down the boulevards.

Even so, whilst it might seem a little emptier than usual, consider ‘emptier’ a relative term – on a steamy weekend, a torrent of humanity is to be entirely expected. For socialites, the natural starting point should be Miami Wars, a bar built around multiple wooden platforms and grassy meadows.

Walking north, find yourself edging past outdoor gyms and cargo containers transformed into seasonal clubs before hitting the legendary Grunt I Woda, a space that thrives on its reputation for street food (try the ‘pineapple pride nasty fries’!), tropical cocktails and varied events program. Continuing, and the riverfront apartment complex known as The Tides provides an upmarket intermission through its collection of higher-end hangouts. With views spilling onto Poniatowski Bridge and the National Stadium, it’s no surprise to find seats in high demand at flouncy venues such as Kohana and Zachodni Brzeg

Thereafter, the party really gets going with the younger generation making full use of the bushes, hidden corners and terrace steps to gather around bongs and portable speakers whilst enjoying their own carryout booze. Arguably, it is this sense of spontaneity that best captures the Wisła spirit. That said, it’s equally important to visit the party boats moored to the riverbank, among them the Barka

30 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023

Wynurzenie craft beer barge and the slick-looking Przystań Nowa Fala. Like last year, however, for the hottest check-in look no further than the sandy floating beach that is Kalima

Back on land, and it is crucial, also, that time is made for a visit to Paloma – with a terrace patio next to the immaculate form of the Museum on the Vistula, this on-edge venue has long been recognised for its killer fish tacos, outdoor screenings and summery cocktails. Not only is it a perfect poster child for Warsaw’s contemporary riverside scene, it’s also the ideal staging point from which to launch a deeper exploration of the Powiśle district beyond.

Donutting / Alpine Coaster

Górka Szczęśliwicka

Found in Park Szczęśliwicki, Warsaw’s highest hill (152metres) has a couple of options for families: donutting in a rubber ring on a slope cooled down with ‘water mist’, and a two-seater Alpine coaster capable of reaching speeds of up to 36-kilometres per hour. For more details on both, plus other activities on and around the hill, see: fb.com/gorkaszczesliwicka

Smart Kids Planet

Norblin Factory (Żelazna 51/53)

One of Norblin’s biggest triumphs has been the way in which it has connected to all ages – at the lower end of the scale, credit for that goes to Smart Kids Planet, a 1,600 sq/m project with nine zones that aim to promote logical thinking, healthy eating, motor functions, perception and creative thinking. For more, see: smartkidsplanet.pl

Go-Karting

National Stadium

(Poniatowskiego 1)

There’s a few tracks to choose from in Warsaw, but our pick of the bunch can be found snaking around the car park sitting below the National Stadium. For kids, junior karts are available as are summer go-kart courses. Birthday parties and other such events can also be arranged for those that call in advance. For info: kartingowynarodowy.pl

Kayak

Otwock

Options abound for kayaking, but for something that feels a little more pastoral than the Wisła try the quaint River Świder that runs past Otwock. Lined with woodland, meadows and sandy landing spots, the route is the most picturesque of all your local choices. For kayak re ntal (as well as BBQ options!), try: przystan-emow.pl

Park Linowy

Wybrzeże Helskie 1/5

Warsaw’s most popular line park has three routes to choose from, the most difficult of which is 400 meters in length and comes peppered with 28 obstacles – you’ll be clambering around at heights that peak at 12-metres above the ground. Also boasting a zip line, one of the biggest selling points is the view across the river that settles on the Old Town.

Skating

Staffa 21

As ludicrous as it might sound, you can now skate at the height of summer on a small, synthetic outdoor rink funded by the city’s participatory budget. Found on the premises of Primary School No. 187, it’s open to the public between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. (MonFri) and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. Rent skates on-site.

COURTYARD

Kraken

Rydygiera 9

If Quint from Jaws designed a bar, it would probably look a lot like Kraken: filled with fishing nets, lanterns, shark fangs and octopus-themed wall art. In summer, however, it’s the courtyard that’s the talking point. Sharing space with SAM and Pa Ta Thai this lively space has become an anchoring point for Żoliborz nightlife.

Ale Wino

Mokotowska 48

At first, you suspect you’re walking into a shabby car park. And then, it hits you –an inner-city sanctum with wooden decking, a slanted sail shielding the sun, and funky chairs sourced from Studio Rygalik. Long-known as one of the best wine bars in Warsaw, the seasonally adjusted menu also gets consistently strong reviews.

34 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023

Bibenda

Nowogrodzka 10

With no reservations accepted, Bibenda’s enduring popularity ensures that queues often build at the entrance. The hassle is worth it to enjoy bio wines, craft cocktails and an interesting meat-free menu in a warm, busy interior that retains the building’s pre-war heritage. Delve deeper for a courtyard featuring a slanted canopy, crates of flowering herbs and a twisty tree.

Gemba

Chmielna 21

Sprinkled with palms, deckchairs and plastic pelicans and flamingos, Gemba’s courtyard is an exercise in kitschy fun. The hip undercurrent of this bar is furthered by its neighbours, they being a vintage store, vinyl shop and barber’s. But it’s cause is also helped by a winter garden whose glass doors fling open to create an open-air living room effect. It’s a hidden gem(ba)!

Column Bar

Krakowskie Przedmieście 42/44 (Bristol Hotel)

Looking like Jay Gatsby’s ballroom, the epic Column Bar instantly wows with its indulgent Art Deco touches. You can well imagine girls in flapper dresses drinking from pyramids of champagne. The courtyard is also a masterpiece, scattered as it is with carefully tended greenery. The sense of affluent serenity is unmatched.

Wozownia

Pl. Trzech Krzyży 16

Set through a pinkish neon lit passageway, find yourself squeezing past the crowds to pass over little alcoves and different steps. Filled with waifish girls knocking back the Prosecco and tanned city boys in tight-fitting trousers, the courtyard is festooned with herby plants and leads to a 200-year-old carriage house that houses a bar selling classic summer cocktails.

Młodsza Siostra

Dobra 14/16

Known for its alternative music policy, and a crowd sourced straight from the local Academy of Fine Arts, Młodsza Siostra is quite an adventure. With temperatures rising, sit on the wooden decking outside. Now the trees and vegetation are in bloom, the scrappy backdrop of bike repair garages softens to take on the vibe found in the shadowy courtyards of Berlin and Budapest.

The Tourist Tram

Running until September, those wishing to see the most Warsaw has to offer have a choice of transport options that will take them past the city’s key attractions. Of these, best-known is the No. 36 vintage-style tram that rattles each Saturday and Sunday from Pl. Narutowicza to Metro Marymont – in the process, you’ll pass many key historical sights such as the former Ghetto area.

Chopin In The Park

Since 1959, it’s been a Warsaw rite of passage to gather on the lawns around the Chopin monument for free Sunday piano recitals in the rose-fringed gardens of Łazienki Park. Drawing some of the biggest piano talents in the world, performances take place each Sunday at noon and 4 p.m. and often attract thousands. It’s vital you add ‘piano in the park’ to any summer bucket list.

ESSENTIAL SUMMER

Water Tram

There’s few better feelings than bouncing over a gangplank before chugging over the river with the wind in your hair. These pleasures await all those who take advantage of the free water tram that connects either sides of the Wisła. Departure points include Saska beach, the sandy stretch in front of the National Stadium and the area around the fountain park.

Old Town Jazz

Warsaw loves the sound of jazz, and where better to enjoy it than on the cobbles of the historic Rynek. Running from July 1st through until the end of August, check in for free weekly concerts held each Saturday evening. Showcasing the hottest talents in Poland – and abroad – its one of those times when the Old Town really bursts into life. For scheduled performances, see: jazznastarowce.pl.

Multimedia Fountains

Warsaw’s fountain park has updated its program this year to follow a Disney theme. Capable of displaying 16 million colours and firing 30,000 litres of water per minute, the 2,850 sq/m fountain complex sees spectacular audio-visual shows take place every weekend at 9.30 p.m. Drawing a million visitors per year, get there early to stake your place on the grassy embankment that leads down from New Town.

Uprising Commemorations

Although commemorations of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising are centred around the minute’s silence held at 5 p.m. on August 1st (a quite chilling moment that sees the entire city pause as one), events last through summer and include a flotilla bobbing down the river, funruns, open-air concerts, reenactments, song recitals, screenings and suchlike. VIEWS

Gdański Bridge

Scissored in shadows from its criss-crossing support pillars, Gdański Bridge is perfect for early evenings. Opened in 1946 as Warsaw’s first permanent postwar bridge, the noisy wooden slats over which trams run add a sense of atmosphere that’s amplified yet further when the evening skies put on their natural show of colour. The view is simply awesome.

Forest

Burakowska 14

How’s this for a wildcard entry – part of a fancy office development, visit Forest to enjoy a verdant world of landscaped hills and flowering meadows. Open to all, the 2,100 sq/m rooftop garden is a remarkable project with views that stretch over Powązki Cemetery’s treeline and towards the city centre’s skyline. Never before has Warsaw seen such a public-spirited office development!

BUW

Dobra 68/70

The rooftop garden that sits atop of the BUW Library feels as futuristic now as it did when it first opened 21-years back. Brimming with vine encrusted pergolas, silvery willows, metallic walkways and pops of sculptural art, it’s been described as “a symbolic keystone between culture, nature and the cosmos.” This description feels particularly apt when the skies turn scarlet.

40 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023

PKiN

Pl. Defilad 1

Call us Mr. Obvious, but a visit to the Palace of Culture’s 30th floor viewing platform is one of Warsaw’s essential bucket list entries. Open each day until 8 p.m., the windswept wraparound terrace is reportedly the most visited attraction in Warsaw – even so, it’s size affords visitors plenty of privacy for romantic Sleepless in Seattle moments.

Siekierkowski Bridge

Held in place by thick orange cables (to stop birds from splatting into them), this southern bridge is a favourite of city photographers looking to capture the contrasts of Warsaw – bordered by thick, tangled woodland, the bend in the river and the distant, gleaming skyline create a stunning juxtaposition that pits raw nature against the city’s manmade glories.

VIEWS

St. Anne’s

Krakowskie Przedmieście 68

Consider the 178 steps that lead to the top of this tower a “stairway to heavenly views”. Attached to a Neo Classical church, find yourself looking down on the Royal Castle in front. Just as impressive is the sight of Warsaw’s skyscraping skyline rising majestically over the Royal Route – it’s almost enough to forgive the morons that clatter into you with their selfie sticks.

Warsaw Rising Museum

Grzybowska 79

As sobering as a visit to the Rising Museum invariably is, getting the elevator up the viewing tower at the end is an uplifting way to finish – having digested the manner in which Warsaw was obliterated in 1944, it’s inspiring to gaze out towards the forest of skyscrapers that stand directly in front. Immediately, you get a sense of the city’s indefatigable spirit.

MODERN POLISH CUISINE

Źródło

Hardwood floors, exposed pipes and a flurry of plants equip an open area decorated with blasts of contemporary art, recycled furnishings and extravagant light installations. Menu-wise, the food lights the soul. But more than just celebrating the power of local produce, there’s a refinement at play that speaks of a kitchen team that aims for magnificence.

hub.praga

Jagiellońska 22

For Polish new wave then hub.praga is tough to beat. Appearing as miniaturised works of art, the offerings of Witek Iwański are complemented by a tan, beige and white interior that feels as light and design-minded as the cuisine.

The Eatery

Koszykowa 49A

Swathed in white-on-white colours and orb-like installations, The Eatery feels blissfully cocooned from the outside world. Chic and causal in both look and taste, everything about it captures the freshness of modern Poland.

Bez Gwiazdek

Wiślana 8

Pod Gigantami

Ujazdowskie 24

Once seen as a classic restaurant for ‘old people’, Pod Gigantami has been revived under celebrity ownership into a spot where heritage meets hip. Crossing into party territory at the weekend with 3 a.m. closing times and banging cocktails, during daylight enjoy the modernised creations of Bartek Kapica as well as a strictly old school schabowy – it’s a giant!

Probiernia Urbanowicz

Pl. Konesera

The most intriguing alcohol store in Warsaw awards the bottles the same reverence as Faberge eggs. Gleaming from the display shelves, the craft, small-batch alcohols present the very best of artisanal Poland with bottles to suit every occasion. They make not just for ideal gifts, but also the perfect companion for an outdoor moonlit bonfire at your dzialka retreat.

MUAS

Dolna 30A

For locally-made ceramics with a distinctively summery twist, one need look no further than MUAS. Used by many of Warsaw’s trendiest cafes and bars, products include wave-shaped platters, ramen bowls, soap dishes, vases and flowerpots, many of which come decorated in surf shack colours of Pacific blue and California pink.

Polish Poster Gallery

Piwna 28/30

Summer all but demands an afternoon spent prowling the alleyways of Old Town, and whilst there don’t forego a visit to the Polish Poster Gallery to flick through over 2,000 posters from the luminaries of Poland’s school of poster. Often beautifully graphic, they’re ideal when it comes to giving your living space a new lease of life.

GARDENS

Flaming Bistro

Francuska 2

With its perfect white colours, the glass-fronted oblong form of the Łepkowskich Villa imparts a fresh, modernist elegance. A place that blurs the line between café, bar and restaurant, hit the back garden to find a space in-filled with well-spaced wooden decks slotted amid the plant life. Climb the glorious spiral stairwell for splendid views of what ranks as one of Warsaw’s best gardens.

Klonn

Jazdów 1B

Klonn means maple tree, and that’s exactly what you’ll find while lounging outside. Said to be 180-years-old (give or take the odd year or two), find it acting as the cornerstone of a back garden scattered with tables and bristling with greenery. Set just a whisper away from Ujazdowskie Castle, the modern international cuisine, slicky and artsy vibe make it a must on starlit nights.

Café Podrygi

Jerzolimskie 3

Past a pair of wrought iron gates, and up a neatly pebbled path, visitors saunter into the neatly clipped gardens of the National Museum – the pristine immensity of what lies ahead is striking, and especially when the modernist architecture is illuminated at night. Such is the power of the backdrop, Podrygi don’t need to do much else other than serve sophisticated cocktails.

Pokój na lato

Grzybowska 79

Climb the wooden stairs and you enter a world cut off from outside forces: stepping into various light, timber chambers, visitors traipse past a plant ‘hotel’, wicker bubble seats dangling from ropes, suspended plant pots and different corners in which to chill. Concerts, workshops, culinary classes, author meets and yoga sessions add texture to this multi-purpose venue / bar.

Muzealna

Jerozolimskie 3

Hidden in the basement of the National Museum, this minimalistic space – decorated with applied artworks by Poland’s top design pioneers – opens out onto a shaded back garden in which towering trees shimmer overhead. This isolated green idyll is perfect to enjoy a seasonal menu of modern Polish food and natural wines. Light and playful, the choices are a song to the summer.

Reginbar Mysia

Mysia 3

The menu mixes Little Italy and China Town, whilst cocktails are fun, flirty and often Asian-inspired. Inside, the windows of this steel, primrose and sky blue decorated space fling open to look onto a back garden concealed by hedges and shrubs. Unsurprisingly, it’s become an essential check-in for Warsaw’s most wanted: 30-year-old crypto traders, selfie-taking influencers, fashion students and upcoming celebs.

Selling the best quality meats about, grill season has never looked better!

Anchored by a geometric mural that declares ‘Guilty Pleasure’ in glowing pink letters, this pocket-sized locale exudes a sense of fun. Written on a blackboard, the menu casts it net over the biggest comfort foods known to man, and these include Not Dogs forged from marinated carrots, onion and red cabbage and a stonkingly brilliant chimichanga. Looking directly down Tamka, the hip ambiance captures modern Warsaw to a tee.

Dziki Królik

Rzeczypospolitej 2A

The four-table intimacy of this timber-encased room charms immediately but does make reservations mandatory – with that in mind, the opening of a terrace has been welcomed. Head chef Magdalena Kurowicka mixes familiar faves (order the tacos!) with more fine-handed concoctions that are veganized with love – for example, soy meat bourguignon or scallop-style Eryngii mushrooms in a white wine sauce abetted by chili, saffron, lime and three types of seaweed.

CAFES

Coffeedesk

Tamka 2 / Wilcza 42 / Próżna 7

There’s three locations, but of these two really stand out in the summer – first, Tamka, pointing as it does in the direction of the Wisła – sit out on the terrace and you’ll be watching hundreds of partygoers heading to the river. Then there’s Próżna with an outdoor patio set on a restored pre-war street – here, you really do feel the old atmosphere of this Paris of the East.

Cophi

Hoża 58/60

Sitting outside Cophi, in the shade of one of the trees that looms above, you get to enjoy all colours and contrasts of downtown Warsaw – a joy for the senses, sip back on an A-class nitro whilst whistling delivery drivers unload their vans or strawberry sellers set up shop from the back of battered cars. Just by being here you feel yourself absorbed into the city’s daily fabric.

El Cafatero

Marszałkowska 27/35

Set away from the parping traffic and wailing trams, El Cafatero sits amid a row of stores found in the shadow cast by the back end of Pl. Zbawiciela’s iconic church. Presenting quite a sight, its patinated domes and intricate steeples have you thinking you’re somewhere cute and quaint like Vilnius or Lublin. Admired from

the bench that rests against El Cafatero’s façade, it’s a magical chillout spot.

Francuska 30

Francuska 30

Long-known for its overhead canopy of dangling umbrellas, Francuska’s photogenic terrace feels all the more relevant following their decision to replace their old brollies with yellowand-blue ones to demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine. Featuring also a pretty greenhouse to hide in on rainy days, and a cabin dispensing Aperol Spritz and other seasonal cocktails, this vibrant corner of Saska Kępa is impossible to dislike.

Hałas Vinyl + Coffee

Elsterska 10

You might know Hałas already for its cool vinyl section and retro-Scandi aesthetics. In summer though, reasons to visit increase thanks to one of our favourite cold brews in the city. And then there’s the little garden in front. Although little more than a couple of benches and chairs, it’s got that feeling of popping round a friend’s rather than visiting a bona fide café.

Roślina

Schroegera 80

Roślina’s acknowledgment of the natural world is pushed

home not just via their generous collection of droopy succulents that hang from the pipework, but also a decent plant-based menu. Oh, and then there’s the garden. Occupying a triangular wedge of land, this magical little enclave is a beauty in the truest, purest sense. It’s a dreamy, blissful place in which time slows to a crawl.

Serso

Szanajcy 16

Never has Warsaw got the bagel so right. The bad news? To find this little heaven, you need to head far from the beaten track. Located in an ascetic space inside a Socialist Realist block, the bagel combos veer from classic to creative and twin well with their coffee. There are better-looking terraces, but by being here you feel you’re part of a cool neighbourhood scene.

Typika

Kolejowa 47

Espousing the Japandi style (an amalgam of Japanese and Scandinavian should your brain not be working), Typika’s floorto-ceiling windows bathe this fashionably stark, split-level space in light no matter the season. Sparingly decorated, the blonde wood furnishings (check the blob-shaped table!) and neon deer further emphasize a natural, refreshing feel that’s particularly welcome when the temperatures soar – it’s ice cool!

Lane’s Gin Bar

Krakowskie Przedmieście 42/44 (Bristol Hotel)

Set on the Royal Route that runs towards Old Town, the Lane’s terrace shields from both the sun and prying passersby courtesy of huge overhead canopies and a phalanx of shoulder-high greenery. Feeling suitably luxurious, visit to enjoy best-in-class cocktails that include the definitive taste of the English summer: Pimm’s. Not just the preserve of hotel guests, the crowd is often young and affluent.

Va Bene Cicchetti

Waryńskiego 9C

Emitting a warm red glow that can be seen from Mars, this Venetian-themed space (think golds and operatic reds) excels at preparing Italian-inspired cocktails that are subtle works of art. With indoor seating severely limited, the summer is a godsend that practically triples capacity. Though the outdoor bit lacks the overt design touches found inside, it’s a fizz of effervescent energy.

Cuda Na Kiju

Nowy Świat 6/12

Warsaw’s first multitap craft bar can no longer claim to be the city’s most adventurous, but is it the most popular: hell yes!

Offering an understandable choice – plus a few mad mavericks – the craft tipples are complemented by on-tap cider and Prosecco. At the weekend, hundreds of people gather to splay on the deckchairs and watch the sun shrinking over General de Gaulle’s statue.

Macondo

Kruczkowskiego 15B

Nestled inside the base of one of the pillars that prop up Poniatowski Bridge, Macondo presents the finest of Colombia: crispy empanadas, plantain pancakes and so forth. This isn’t just an eatery though, and the cheerful drinks include party tipples such as pisco sour and passion fruit michelada. As weekend strikes, the party moves outdoors to a fun-filled patio that resounds to Latin tunes.

Same Krafty

Rynek Starego Miasta

Same Krafty dominate the Insider’s Old Town agenda thanks to two scuffed and boisterous craft pubs, and their Tolkienesque Same Fusy tea room. When the weather turns though, it’s the terrace on the north-western corner of the square that becomes the default choice. Watching the sun slope down over the Old Town’s tiled rooftops while accordionists play in the distance is an experience in itself.

Exhibitions of great artists and the best plays

The Museum of Fantastic Art at Centrum Praskie Koneser is currently hosting the exhibition "Jerzy Duda-Gracz: Remnants." This monographic exhibition showcases the unique works of this exceptional artist, whose creations balance on the border of surrealism and symbolism. The exhibition consists of nearly sixty artworks, providing an overview of the painter's creativity from the late 1960s

to the beginning of the 21st century. What is particularly interesting is that the selection of exhibited pieces was made by theatre director Agata DudaGracz, the artist's daughter. The "Jerzy Duda-Gracz: Remnants" exhibition is open daily until October 8th, from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased for 40 PLN (regular) and 30 PLN (reduced) on ebilet. pl. FOODIES

Kieliszki na Próżnej

Próżna 12

So named after the 1,116 wineglasses that hang tantalizingly over the bar, as you imagine this spot serves as a superb wine spot, not least because of their terrace overlooking the pre-war cobbles of Próżna. However, last year’s signing of chef Sebastian Wełpa has also brought the food to the fore, with the creative Polish menu deemed worth of a Michelin bib gourmand in June.

INSIDER FAVORITE

Tuna

Elektryczna 2

Resembling the scales of a fish, Tuna’s core decorative element are 18,000 tuna cans that sheathe the walls – smartly appointed in dark metallic colours, the cool vibe is perfectly pitched for Warsaw’s sweltering summer days. The menu also seems to have these in mind with exhilarating interpretations of seafood by Martin Gimenez Castro – these include a chili con tuna that’s an ecstasy of tastes.

Nuta

Pl. Trzech Krzyży 10/14

Expressive in its aesthetics and flavour, Nuta’s tasting menu is the personification of Andrea Camastra’s character –often mind-bendingly creative, this luxurious experience takes you on an unexpected roller coaster of tastes and sensations. Have no doubt, this is the most thrilling gastronomic experience in Poland, a point underscored by the Michelin star bestowed upon them in June.

CLUBS

Ritual

Mazowiecka 12

Looking dark, sensual and luxurious, this two-level space unwraps before you like some elaborate adventure. Slinky, sultry club creatures of unfathomable beauty prowl past with carefully crafted cocktails poised in hand, as DJs and dancers lift the atmosphere to impossible new heights. Open even on Monday, at Ritual the good times never end – for a piece of the high life, look no further than Ritual.

Smolna

Smolna 38

Helping to fan the ‘sense of secret’, the no-cellphone policy (you cover the camera with a sticker) ensures zero berks recording the shenanigans that await. Allow the names they’ve pulled do the talking – past events include sets by Hector Oaks, Laurent Garnier and Rebekah. If those names mean nothing, then it’s not your place.

Question

Grzybowska 60

Bubbles and beauties await in Question, an exclusive bar-club hybrid angled towards big-spending good lookers. The sense of intimacy creates a natural buzz whilst the quality-minded cocktails help feed the party spirit.

Sen

Wioślarska 6

Entering this top-floor joint, visitors are hit by a tidal wave of gorgeousness: wall-to-wall with off-duty celebrities and glamor pusses, the carefree hedonism is like something from a film – only tonight, you’re one of the stars. Although the rooftop terrace is the primary summer attraction, the indoor area – festooned with deluxe sofas and floorto-ceiling windows – also gets lively.

WINE

Brać

Sierakowskiego 4A

As resistant as traditionalists may be to the very notion of Polish wine, Brać rip-up the rule book to present on-edge sips from niche domestic producers you’ve probably never heard of. Bathed in a rich, red neon glow at night, forego the stylish interior to sip outside on a pristine side street of a newly mapped residential estate in the heart of old Praga.

Niewinność

Zgoda 5

Completely lacking in that frosty formality that defines many wine spots, the welcome here has more in line with entering your favorite local bar. Casual and comfy but never short of chic, it looks more like a trendy loft apartment with its communal table, poster art and zaps of neon. Affordable price points and a busy outdoor street scene mark it a summer must.

Rascal

Moliera 6

Reputedly the largest bar in Europe specialising in natural wines, this former canteen for ballet dancers became one of the hottest addresses in town when it launched last year – a point not lost on the Vogue staffers encamped here. Crowned with a veneered, marble-topped bar, the interior is a chic work that’s outdone only by the walled Insta-friendly garden in the back.

Superfly

Zajęcza 1A

Bathed in the soft light of the 70s style vintage lamps scattered about, the natural wines are of the cutting edge and are ably supported by the cooking of co-owner Oleg. The floor-to-ceiling windows afford plenty of summertime people watching.

Mielżyński Wine Bar

Burakowska 5/7

Tangled in vines and creeping ivy, this brick warehouse comes into its element each summer when drinkers pile outside to drink amid rustling trees and pristine lawns. Set within a former factory compound, this institution is a flagbearer when it comes to consistency and quality.

Lalou Wine Concept

Krochmalna 56

This beautiful store / tasting room is defined by its sophisticated simplicity and sense of light and space. The offer is A-class: “Wines from Champagne, Jura, the Loire Valley, Burgundy, Etna, Tenerife, Moselle are our essence,” they say. “And also natural wines as well – organic, biodynamic, low-intervention, modernist, terrorist, authenticist and naturalist.”

Pogodne

Kaliska 9/22

Second-hand does not have to mean second best, and that’s abundantly clear in Pogodne, a top floor apartment turned over stock classically flamboyant garments: from almost fetishistic macs to elegant cocktail dresses via Carnaby Street-style fashions. Coming together in a stupendous riot of colour, other finds include Moomin lamps, Charles & Di wedding mugs =, porcelain pets and 1960s fashion mags.

Café Vintage Kolektyw

Al. Waszyngtona 30/36

Doubling as a super-cool coffee shop (in summer order the iced cappuccino-orange juice combo), snap up everything from Marilyn clocks to rotary dial phones to that Virgin Mary table lamp that you’ve always secretly coveted. Though big buys are possible – tables and Jetson period chairs – it’s the little finds that are the best. The BDSM-themed porcelain is eye-opening!

Ładne Vintage

Międzyborska 57/65

Sourcing her items from bazars and other ‘mysterious places’, Ładne retails domestic and international items for house and home. Find a comprehensive choice of glass, ceramics and porcelain to lend your life some vintage flourish. “First impressions are important to me,” says the owner, Agnieszka: “I only stock things that are interesting, have a purpose and that I actually like myself.

Lata 60-te

11 Listopada 54

Despite the name, this store sees beyond just the 60s: “if we like something,” they say, “we don’t look at the birth certificate”. Specialising in refreshed furniture from the PRL era, it’s become a favourite of design mavens looking to trick out home with a pre-loved statement piece. Outside the expected wingback chairs and Nixon sofas, find glassware, ceramics and lighting solutions.

BEER

CRAFT

Kufle i Kapsle

Nowogrodzka 25

Ten years old this summer, KiK stands out as one of Warsaw’s original tap bars. Respectful of the building’s pre-war heritage, the interiors feature a warming back room with low-slung armchairs, but the real action is out front where note-taking nerds and international pissheads join as one to clamour around a bar serving some of the best beer in Poland.

Hopito Chmielna

Chmielna 24

Opened in January as the younger sister of Hopito’s Żurawia venture, this branch feels a little more grown-up in its target audience, though every bit as fun in its beer selection - radicalized drinkers will love Hopito’s own wacky brews, though these are supplemented by more standard craft swigs. Being Chmielna, expect a lively terrace.

Uwaga

Set in a row of mews-like buildings, duck under a photogenic neon before entering an area filled with carpenter-style workbenches and plush, comfy seats in eclectic clashing colors. As engaging as it is in winter, summer is all about embedding yourself on the terrace and twisting like a meerkat as you watch the good lookers file past.

62 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023
Żelazna 51/53 (Norblin Factory)

Syty Chmiel

Marszałkowska 10/16

Though undeniably large, intimacy isn’t short in supply, and that’s down to the comfortable armchairs, framed pictures, atmospheric lo-lighting and some personal trinkets to reflect the passions of the owners (skateboards, for instance). There’s twelve taps in total, but the great triumph here is how they’ve succeeded connecting the beer with owner Pan Tasak’s modern Polish cuisine.

Browar Warszawski

Haberbuscha i Schielego 2

Browar Warszawski’s winning summertime feature is a terrace in the deeply shaded plaza of this swanky development. Beyond the glass frontage, it’s the most swish of Warsaw’s tap bars with the selection brewed on-site. Recognizing that not everyone likes beer (!), they also fix a mean cocktail – the Browar Sour, based on Ostoya vodka, is brill.

Best of the Best

Jabeerwocky

Nowogrodzka 12

Good old Jabbers will never let you down. A Warsaw institution, the adventurous choice of beers gives nods to international pioneers, domestic talents as well as their own house beers. Pre-war floors and the welcome smell of spillage give it a great atmosphere that becomes a boisterous babble of international voices the later it gets. The street patio catches the sun perfectly.

Pinta

Chmielna 7/9

Bearing the hallmarks of the previous tenant (Mikkeller), the minimal but primrose-coloured Scandi-design keeps the attention on the beer which comes, mainly, from the namesake brewery. Considered the founding fathers of Poland’s craft adventure, the beers are brilliant and fairly priced. Reassuringly cosmopolitan in its crowd, it’s become our runaway favourite of Warsaw’s craft pubs.

ENTERTAINMENT

Baila

Grzybowska 60

Feeling extravagant and exotic, and featuring no shortage of palm fronds, Asian woods and backlit fish adorning the walls, Baila promotes itself as the first concept in Poland to fuse showtime with dinner! Bar-top dancers, acrobats, vocalists, you name it – Baila’s celebratory spirit is positively infectious.

Madame Q

Burdzińskiego 5/24

In the best burlesque tradition, Madame Q feels a little covert and ‘in the know’. Evoking an air of inter-war Paris, the luscious design pairs perfectly with inventive house cocktails and a schedule starring performers such as Betty Q, Lily Frou and Red Juliette. Intimate and atmospheric, it’s ideal for a night with a twist.

Worek Kości

Bagatela 10

Chaton

Foksal 19

How does Warsaw’s 1% spend the weekend? The answer can be found in Chaton, a lavish multi-faceted project that bills itself as a dinner-show club. In essence, that translates to find food and wines served whilst world class stage performers prance about whilst revelling in the bosom of refined luxury.

There is nothing ordinary about Worek Kości and it could as easily earn a place on this list for its décor (over 400 replica skulls) as it could its burlesque entertainment program. Instead though, those amusements are edged out by their regular roster of lectures on criminal profiling, forensics, serial killers and execution methods. It’s a passionate celebration of the beautiful and bizarre.

FRIDA KAHLO: THE COLOUR OF LIFE

Coming this July to Łazienki Królewskie, a new exhibition seeks to cast light on the life of Frida Kahlo…

warsawinsider.pl 67 PHOTOGRAPH SHUTTERSTOCK

Although the work of Frida Kahlo is famous all over the world, her works are rarely seen in Poland. That stands to change with the Colour of Life exhibition hosted by the Royal Łazienki Museum. Not only will visitors be able to view the artist’s paintings, but also view archival films and photographs that will allow them to immerse themselves into Frida’s complex world.

Part of the exhibition will include a unique outdoor installation inspired by Casa Azul, her famous house and garden. Entering this space, visitors will find themselves transported to her vibrant world.

Included in the exhibition will be seminal works such as My Dress Hangs There (1933), Still Life with Watermelons (1953), and Coconuts (1951). The last two paintings come from the

Colección Acervo INBAL - Museo de Arte Moderno, a Mexican cultural institution dedicated to popularizing Mexican culture abroad.

The exhibition will be complemented by a short film dating from 1941 and showing Frida and her partner Diego at their estate. The film's author, the American photographer Nickolas Muray, was a personal friend and shot several images of the artist. Among the archival material, visitors will see Frida and Diego in their Casa Azul garden. Even allowing for the passage of time, the quality of the film, especially the intensity of the colours, has been perfectly preserved.

During the exhibition, events and educational workshops will be held, and these have been specifically aimed at allowing for a greater understanding of Frida’s work and the culture of Mexico.

AUDIORIVER 2023

Held for the first time in 2006, Audioriver has come a long way in a short time. From humble beginnings when just 10,000 attended the inaugural event, it has grown to become one of Central Europe’s best-loved dance festivals.

Held in Płock, 110-kilometres north-west of Warsaw, past line-ups speak for themselves and include dance dons such as Richie Hawtin, Fabio & Grooverider, Charlotte de Witte, Paul Kalkbrenner, Sven Vath and Laurent Garnier. This year continues in that rich vein, presenting as it does over 120 performers spread over eight or so stages. Held on the scenic banks of the Wisła, and with a ‘music fair’ taking place on the town’s historic Rynek, the picturesque setting goes handin-hand with a gloriously upbeat and amiable vibe.

Dubbing itself an alternative music festival – but with a healthy slant angled towards electronica – this year’s roster features Enrico Sangiuliano, Artbat, Adiel, Flava D and Serum.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN!

Warsaw’s rich history and cultural significance has left it with no shortage of museums to visit. Offering a well-rounded view of the city’s past and present, these are the seven you just shouldn’t miss…

FRYDERYK CHOPIN MUSEUM

The 18th century Ostrogski Palace is the perfect foil for the ultra-modern content of this multi-sensory space. The personal items are captivating (his death mask, gifts from his muse, etc.), but the big victory here is the museum’s ability to suck visitors right back into the times of Chopin through the use of interactive sights and sounds. ul. Okólnik 1, chopin. museum

MUSEUM OF LIFE UNDER COMMUNISM

A deeply personal insight into the former system by allowing visitors to view what Communism meant to the everyday person. Here, rifle and

rummage through a room mockedup to resemble a typical household apartment, watch propaganda films, peer inside a phone box, paw at vintage keep-fit gear or covet the ladies fashions of the time. Detailed in its captions, witty in its presentation and comprehensive in its content, it is a place where normal items such as aftershave bottles, postcards, clothing and crude household appliances are allowed to shine on a totem and tell their own story. A haven of trinkets and collectibles, its small size belies its utter magic. ul.

Piękna 28/34, mzprl.pl

MUSEUM OF WARSAW

Reprised as a maze-like treasure filled trove glimmering with

curiosities, thousands of objects have been gathered here to detail the story of Warsaw in a non-linear style that can at times feel overwhelming. Peculiar souvenirs, scale models, old postcards and recovered works of art all combine with a mass of trivia to leave visitors boggled with knowledge. The vertiginous views of the Rynek below are worth the admission alone. Rynek Starego Miasta 28-42, muzeumwarszawy.pl

NATIONAL MUSEUM

Famed for its collection of Dutch and Flemish masters, it’s also the final word in Polish art, with all the greats represented – inc. Matejko, Witkiewicz and other such stars.

70 Warsaw Insider | JULY 2023

That’s reason enough for many, but for others the museum’s ace card was revealed at the end of 2017 with the opening of the Gallery of Polish Design. Offering a full 360 view of Polish 20th century applied arts, it’s an aesthetic joy featuring everything from iconic PRL era wall units and tulip chairs to kitschy toys and gizmos. Frankly, it’s a stunning museum that just keeps getting better – though delayed by covid, the start of the year saw the world class Gallery of Ancient Art added to the mix. Featuring 1,800 ancient relics, papyrus scrolls, Iranian golden masks and even an Egyptian mummy! Al. Jerozolimskie 3, mnw.art.pl

NEON MUSEUM

Playing a key role in the government’s attempts to fuse socialist ideology with consumerism, the campaign to ‘neon-ize’ Poland saw gloomy cities still bearing the scars of war boldly gleam once more under lights designed and produced by many of the leading

artisans of the time. Salvaged from the scrapheap (in many instances, literally), this museum was created by Ilona Karwinska and David Hill who inadvertently kickstarted a nationwide trend and reignited the country’s appetite for neon. Housing several dozen neons that once lit up Poland, these renovated signs make for Warsaw’s coolest attraction: Instagram them now! ul. Mińska 25 (Soho Factory), neonmuzeum.org

POLIN

Composed of eight galleries, this architectural marvel covers different stages of local Jewish history, from the middle ages to the present day. Highlights of this museum include a staggeringly beautiful replica of the ceiling of Gwoździec synagogue, and a ‘remake’ of a typical inter-war Jewish Warsaw street. That it was named the European Museum of the Year in 2016 such much for its ambitions to focus on more than the Holocaust alone. ul.

Anielewicza 6, polin.pl

THE WARSAW RISING MUSEUM

If the throngs and sheer informational overload can often be daunting, it remains the most important museum in the capital, and quite arguably the country. Points of interest are rife and include a life-size replica of a B-24 Liberator plane as well as a claustrophobic ‘sewage tunnel’ through which visitors squeeze to get an idea of the kind of conditions combatants once faced. But it’s not the A-list sights that make the biggest impact, rather the smaller, highly personal curios: a pair of wedding bands forged from bullets; an Omega watch, it’s hands frozen at the same moment a bomb killed its owner; and a lucky cuddly mascot made from a German overcoat. Of course, the aftermath is also covered in heartrending detail and concludes with a 3D film that takes viewers swooping over the smoldering ruins of the capital. ul. Grzybowska 79, 1944.pl

COMING NEXT!

When it comes to defining the Best of Summer, we’ve only just begun…

The trick, so they say, is to keep people wanting more. Well, we hope that’s the case where the Insider is concerned, for where the Best of Summer is concerned we haven’t scratched the surface. If this issue has been decidedly focused on Food & Beverage, then next issue we’ll be working to redress the balance by carving the city into sections to deliver you the essential sights and sounds of Warsaw by district –sure, there’ll be food and drink, but we’ll also be taking a more textured approach to present the city’s seasonal curiosities, attractions and hidden summer treasures. And we can’t bloody wait – adios!
