EVER SINCE THE INSIDER was born, it’s been customary for us to dedicate one issue annually to the Best of Warsaw: a marquee edition celebrating the best cafes, restaurants and bars that the city has to offer. Increasingly, however, that’s proven problematic. Why? Well, because whilst it might make sense to present this roll call of greats at the end of each calendar year, doing so largely overlooks the city’s summer happenings – think about it, it’s neither smart nor relevant to be talking about beer gardens or restaurant rooftops at a time when Santa’s elves are making their deliveries. Yet by overlooking these, we’ve consistently failed to recognise one of the city’s biggest charms – that being, the outburst of energy that grips it each summer. With that in mind, we’ve broken from our own established norms to dedicate our July outing to finding the Best of Summer. In the pages beyond, we’re delighted to reveal all the places that make a difference – the ones that truly evoke the season’s biggest buzzes. Hope you enjoy it, and see you next month.

As suffocating as Warsaw can become, it’s impossible not to love summer in this city. Distinguished by its crackling atmosphere, at no other time does the capital feel more alive. With that in mind, we’re delighted to present the stars of the season in our Best of Summer issue…

For the definitive Warsaw experience, the capital offers up a medley of options. Entrenched in local folklore, we pick out the meeting spots that everyone needs to know – and why!

Cuda Na Kiju

The overbearing block that stands at Nowy Świat 6/12 once famously housed the Communist Party Headquarters. Well, it’s lost the communism, but kept the party. In the courtyard, find a battalion of millennials spilling from the nearby clubs to cavort around the fountain. More chilled out, head out to the front with the grownups, and to an area decked out with hundreds of deckchairs overlooking the iconic palm tree on the street outside. With a craft beer in hand from Cuda Na Kiju (Warsaw’s first tap bar), it’s the epitome of this city at sunset.

Norblin Factory

Without fail, the big winner of the summer has been Norblin Factory – hell, we’ve even spotted the coolest man on the planet, Kieran Culkin, ambling around here with his family! But why exactly has it become such a major, city-wide attraction?

Best of the Best

We could easily talk about the luxury KinoGram cinema with its champagne vending machines, cultural hotspots such as the immersive ArtBox Experience or the legendary BioBazar – the pioneering farmers’ market loved by every foodie. But whilst these details and venues have undoubtedly enriched the Norblin Factory experience, it is above all else the atmosphere that has charmed the Polish capital and acted as the most unique selling point of all.

Occupying a 19th century metalware factory, the meticulous (and miraculous) restoration of this former industrial plant has to be seen to be believed (and wouldn’t you guess, you can find out more about this heritage and background at the Factory Museum). Cutting through its heart though, find a street lined with outdoor seating and venues such as the elite MOXO restaurant and music club, the craft-minded Uwaga and the effortlessly glamorous Piano Bar. Lit at nighttime by an overhead trail of blue lights, it’s become the sexiest street in Warsaw – a cosmopolitan catwalk whose ambiance is lifted even further by the sounds of live music that whisper all around. Mixing elements of the past, present and future, it is representative of everything that makes the city great, and in this way it’s become the dynamic face of summer 2023.

MEET YOU AT...

Nocny Market

Nocny Market brings together dozens of food vendors to form a patchwork of uber cool traders and hip little stands. But more than just an ultra-fun collection of ethnic cook-up spots, the Nocny Market has become the place to get tattooed in front of hollering strangers, stock up on artisan donuts, swag some crazy-patterned Warsaw-themed socks, get the whiskers waxed or simply boogie on down to side-burned DJs rescued from the Lost Years of Hipster. That this happens on a disused train platform lit by funky strips of neon lends this weekend market-party a unique energy.

Poniatówka

Of Warsaw’s clutch of river-side bathing spots, then Poniatówka at the base of Poniatowski Bridge is easily the city’s fave – you know summer has officially started from the first moment you cross the bridge by tram and see hundreds of sunbathers dotted down below. Sitting practically in the shadow of the National Stadium, bringing a bag of beers here and watching the sun dip down is a local rite of passage.

Poznańska

Exciting things are happening in the office district more commonly known as Mordor, and by in large they’re happening in Postępu 5. Set around rows of disused garages, these have been infilled by a selection of vendors and food outlets that represent a radiant burst of light for the office droids more familiar with cellophane wrapped sandwiches and ready meals. And beyond good food, it’s become a place in which to gather in and savour.

Lined with pre-war tenements – some still bearing the scars of battle, and other buffed and beautified to their original best – the city’s south-central fragment has flourished over the last decade. The social radar beeps loudest on Poznańska where you’ll find a fleet of vibrant hangouts operating alongside artisanal stores selling hats and brushes, antique galleries and art studios. Highlights are many and include the 80s-themed VHS (say hi to The Hoff in the toilet), Tel Aviv, the evergreen Beirut-Kraken and late night San Escobar. With the party often carrying onto the street, it’s summertime Warsaw at its best.

Elektrownia Powiśle

Acting as a natural buffer between the riverfront and the rest of Powiśle, Elektrownia’s biggest advantage is its proximity to the water. Just steps away from both the metro and the Copernicus Science Centre, this makes it a natural gathering spot – outside, that means taking a place on the immaculate lawn by the front with the fountain tinkling away. The back, too, has also been opened up to feature an array of shaded seating as well as rooftop perches crowning the plush Dock 19.

Browary Warszawskie

Browary has utilised the surviving elements of the 19th century Haberbusch & Schiele brewery and set them against a backdrop of freshly mapped streets and fresh new build that feel contextually suited to the area. Assuming the feel of a swanky micro-district, this feeling runs particularly high around the woonerf that runs through the development, as well as a sunken plaza that finds itself framed by the Food Hall, a flagship brewpub and various other F&B points. Decked with greenery, and featuring a towering brick archway that affords protection from summer downpours, it’s simply a stunning space to enjoy.

Evoking the decadent spirit of the Roaring Twenties, it’s not just the drinks of Urszula Trochimiak and Karol Rychlewic that have impressed, but also a program of events that include jam sessions, jazz concerts, DJ sets and weekly English comedy nights. Set in an atmospheric basement, they’re also rolling out Gatsby Rooftop in time for July – more next issue!

Black and white photos referencing the history of this former gentleman’s atelier gaze from the walls onto a compact interior heaving with brass, terrazzo and blue velvet finishes. A café by day, come evening Zaremba moves into cocktail territory with sophisticated drinks crafted from premium components. Overlooking the corner of lively Nowogrodzka, the wooden deck affords prime people watching opportunities.

Republica San Escobar

Run by the maverick Funky Fluid brewery, San Escobar feels like the odd one out on this list – lacking airs and graces, it’s a place where fun rules the roost. Tiny in size, find an interior filled with corrugated iron sheets, zappy neons, chunky woods and bike pedals on the footrests. The fun-loving spirits is irresistible, and the tight dimensions mean the party often spills onto the terrace outside.

MOXO

Norblin Factory

Many will remember 2023 as the year Warsaw fell back in love with the luxury lifestyle. Of the upscale openings, none made a bigger splash than the bar-club crossover MOXO, an exclusive space featuring Poland’s tallest bar (12 metres!), Nikkei cuisine, and a stringent door policy aimed at keeping the riff raff at bay.

Split into different areas, each with its own dark and voluptuous colour scheme, the sensual, velvety Grace mixes an air of 80s excess with a design that verges on bordello chic. Operating as a late night cocktail spot, the drinks are highly affordable despite the premium clientele.

Split in two rooms, the one that gets the most attention touts illuminated mesh-wired installations that hang like clouds. For sure, one of the most viral openings of the year!

Just steps from the Polytechnic, Niigata’s street-side window serves out one of Warsaw’s favourite lunch-on-the-run solutions from a hatchway decorated with cute, waving kittens. Wrapped in plastic, pop by for creative, handheld rice balls that come in vegan and non-vegan options. The spicy Akuma is a fave, though for the classic bestseller select the sake-seasoned roasted salmon.

This lively little joint gives Japanese food a new spin with its presentation of on-the-dash fried foods served in various combinations. Topped with swirls and slashes of mayo and ‘secret spicy sauce’, the JFC (Japanese Fried Chicken) is a particular big-seller and addictively more-ish. On the beverage front, plunge into the unknown by ordering a fruit-flavored soju.

With just eight seats and one sitting per day, reservations aren’t recommended, they’re compulsory. Priced at PLN 750 per head, the cost is reflective of what many call a one-in-a-million experience and the most exceptional sushi dinner that the country has ever seen. Although open just a few months, it’s impossible to believe that Warsaw will ever see a better standard.

Filled with light during the day, come dusk the curtains sweep shut to close guests off from the outside world. Sensual fragrances waft around, complementing a luxury menu touting bottles of craft sake that peak at PLN 3,000. Fixed by smart staff, cocktails are also prominent and include the refreshingly aromatic Summertime Sadness. It’s the final word in luxury Japan.

Lines can stretch on the weekend, but that’s all part of the experience.

Crowd favourites number the creamy mango lassi, though it’s their chocolate-based temptations that represent their strongest suite. In this regard, consider their chocolate habanero as the unique selling point – coming with a fiery twist, it’s got a cheeky punch that will tickle the tonsils.

A mainstay of Saka Kępa, Sosenka’s non-descript look belies the flavours –changing frequently to reflect the season, these run from localgrown fruit tastes to more unusual exotica such as lemongrass and ginger (Tajska). For much the same offer, plus lashings of frozen yoghurt drizzled with fruit, check their wooden cabin on Francuska 30 –you’ll see the queue before you see the place.

Better late than never. Though a little tardy in announcing their plans, Filmowa Stolica are the biggie that everyone loves. Organising screenings in several locations around town, past venues have included Royal Wilanów, POLIN, Saski Park, the horseracing track, Kępa Potocka and many more besides. To see what plans they’ve cooked up this year, check filmowastolica.pl over the coming weeks.

Community Hubs

Pretty much all of the major social hubs have something up their sleeves, though for the very best spots check out the square at Browary Warszawskie, the plaza at Centrum Praskie Koneser and the pleasingly green idyll at Elektrownia Powiśle. Announcing their screenings a few weeks in advance on their respective social media platforms, expect all to offer a diverse program that considers both families and arty adults.

Wyświetl Film

Offering a more arthouse program than most, Wyświetl Film have booked several park spaces and suchlike for the coming weeks, among them Park Hassów (Ursus) and Park Górczewska (Bemowo). Featuring also events in Mokotów and Ochota, for further details on open-air screenings check wyswietlfilm.pl.

Loreta channels the spirit of this design-led hotel brand through its funky décor and eclectic art. The terrace, though, is the clincher. As night falls, retreat to an enclosed balcony deck signposted by a neon the colour of bubblegum pink; here, amid cascading greenery and low-slung seating, join other cocktail hounds enjoying inventive house sips that use best-inclass ingredients.

Positioned so you catch the best of Warsaw’s peachy sunsets falling over the Central Business District, watching the night slide in can be an almost empowering experience from this 19th floor bar. Cocktail bills are easily accrued when enjoying one of their open-air concerts, but whilst this place packs out easily, secluded corners can usually be uncovered.

The Roof

Rondo Daszyńskiego 2 (The HUB) Offering thrilling 21st floor views from one of Wola’s newer towers, The Roof’s sleek furnishings, well-deployed plants and spherical lights cast a cool look that act in concert with a setting that feels fantastically affluent –but as beautiful as the interior is, it’s the outdoor deck that’s easily the biggest draw of this upscale cocktail bar.

Forget the George Clooney lookalikes that dwell in Warsaw’s other sky bars, you’re more likely to find local versions of Pete Doherty. The least dressiest of our selection, this neighborhood legend has a design that rhymes well with the 60s tower it’s found in. The views are pretty uninspiring (a tramline and some kiosks), but the vibe is something special.

Available only for private bookings, the seventh floor Belle Epoque is the final word in luxury – Warsaw has elite-minded rooftops, but none can offer the privacy and exclusivity of this elegant cupola. Specialising in champagne-based cocktails, it's ideal for moonlit proposals or small-scale gatherings when you want to impress.

Woah – the number of good lookers that flock here is simply off-the-scale. Don’t dare use the words “you should be a model” as a chat-up line, for the answer you’ll receive is “actually I am”. Set on the top floor of a riverside development, the open terrace of this A-list club offers even more to feast your eyes on: the twin sight of the National Stadium and Poniatowski Bridge.

Pl. Powstańców Warszawy 9 (Hotel Warszawa)

Head to Floor 6 for there lies Szóstka, a long, slick restaurant decorated with steel tubing, bursts of greenery and a covered glass ceiling. But it’s outside where everyone heads, to a sparsely furnished terrace with killer views of the city below. Clinking glasses out here is the ultimate sunset moment with the tasting menu offering an exciting array of adventurous global tastes.

Chopin Taras Café

Accessed via an old elevator, reservations for the rooftop seating are recommended to avoid disappointment. More creaky and atmospheric than its glossy competitors, the fourth floor Chopin Taras Café has earned a name for jazzy concerts that take place among the plant boxes.

If you can overlook such flaws as the painfully overwhelmed service, then Amar is one of the standouts of 2023 – luxuriously exotic interiors, fantastic Lebanese food and interesting cocktails all point to much potential. Then there’s the rooftop, an intimate L-shaped space with views not just of Warsaw’s skyscrapers, but also the magically atmospheric Pasaz Norblin down below.

Dock 19

Dobra 42

Unlikely to induce vertigo, this first floor rooftop is a favourite with the local glitterati. Its height ensures you’re at treetop level and that alone makes for an atmosphere that feels tangibly connected to the hip Powiśle vibe. For food and drink, ‘light and seasonal’ are the guiding principles whilst the look feels almost redolent of a luxury cruiser.

Baken

Baken feels like a merger between the chic streets of Paris and the cosy corners of Copenhagen, with its delectable breads and inviting atmosphere hitting the sweet spot between French and Danish charm. The energy is conducted through an open kitchen and expressed via handsome staff clad in white t-shirts. The scrambled eggs are a must, so too are the plum Crêpes Suzette.

Kubuś Piekarenka

Trending big this summer is Kubuś, one more breakfast / lunch / café / bakery crossover to add to Warsaw’s ever-growing list. Looking fashionably ad hoc with bare, distressed walls decorated with fleeting bits of wall art, people gather for choices such as mackerel pasta and crispy breads piled with gooey regional cheese, creamy scrambled eggs and oyster mushrooms. Outstanding.

From the creators of Peaches comes this brill brunch spot. Design-wise, the pair’s taste for cool is unmissable and surmised by a wall of glazed ceramic tiles from Holland’s GBD.studio. The experimental dishes include a great congee served with cashew butter glazed in muscovado and their own unique take on French toast. Lines at the door are not unknown, but all agree it’s worth the wait.

Stolica Café

Previously known for Gothic Café in Malbork, Boguś Gałązka has kicked up a storm in Warsaw with this fab venture, a place where artisanal breads compete against inventive takes on shakshouka, English vegan fryups, and pancakes splashed with season fruit and rich raspberry sauce. Housed in the arthouse, Socialist Realist era Kino Iluzjon, the scene is suitably hip and Insta-friendly.

Chmury / Hydrozagadka

Set in a fleapit courtyard covered in wall art – itself an alternative summertime attraction – it’s hard to tell where Chmury ends and Hydrozagdka begins. Seemingly both spiritually cojoined, much of that connection has been forged through their devotion to eclectic live music. Tight and crowded, it’s a place where audience and band become one, feeding off each other to generate an electrifying atmosphere.

Subtle but enthralling in its design, its darkness is penetrated by dozens of orblike table lamps and overhead lights that bring to mind a spectacular star fall. Sophisticated cocktails and excellent acoustics make gigs here a pleasure: and yes, the jazz names that have played here have been second to none.

Młodsza Siostra

Smuggled inside a scruffy courtyard fringed by lock-up garages, this alt. space has shades of Berlin and Budapest with its underlying feeling of artsy cool. Within, it’s a creaky spot filled with wobbly furnishing and maverick sounds. At times claustrophobic, the dimensions lend themselves well to intimate gigs that see everything from improvised instrumentals to concerts from the likes of the Death Addict Society.

Around five years have passed since Pardon settled into their new (and substantially more salubrious) surroundings and the place is at last starting to really feel like home. The air of unforced cool is unmatched in Warsaw and largely credited to a musical menu committed to obscure ethnic and jazzy sounds. The terrace, strung with overhead bulbs, has been expanded out to cater for the increasing numbers of punters.

Piano Bar

Crowned with a show-stealing 12-foot chandelier that dangles from the ceiling of this dual-level structure, Piano Bar’s character oozes a sense of confident prosperity. It’s a must all year around, but it’s even better in summer when smooth, jazzy performances take place outside. Drifting around Norblin’s passageway, the sounds add extra sparkle to the crackling atmosphere.

Now, a pizza revolution has been foisted on us, with the line led by relative veterans such as Ciao a Tutti and Mąka i Woda. Lately, these have been supplemented by, among others, Nonna, Franco and Pizzaiolo. But for our favourite, look no further than the perfect Polly!

THE WISŁA

It’s amazing to think now,

but not long back the state of the Wisła was an open source of shame – the best thing that could be said for it in the early 00s was that it acted as a natural buffer between the rest of the city and the then savage wildlands of Praga.

Now fully absorbed into the city, the regeneration of the left bank ranks as one of Warsaw’s greatest accomplishments of the last decade; ironically, though, it has been the quest to connect it to Praga that has dampened its spirit this year – with work on a pedestrian footbridge still ongoing, the construction zone has acted as a disruptive force by temporarily cutting the flow of people walking down the boulevards.

Even so, whilst it might seem a little emptier than usual, consider ‘emptier’ a relative term – on a steamy weekend, a torrent of humanity is to be entirely expected. For socialites, the natural starting point should be Miami Wars, a bar built around multiple wooden platforms and grassy meadows.

Walking north, find yourself edging past outdoor gyms and cargo containers transformed into seasonal clubs before hitting the legendary Grunt I Woda, a space that thrives on its reputation for street food (try the ‘pineapple pride nasty fries’!), tropical cocktails and varied events program. Continuing, and the riverfront apartment complex known as The Tides provides an upmarket intermission through its collection of higher-end hangouts. With views spilling onto Poniatowski Bridge and the National Stadium, it’s no surprise to find seats in high demand at flouncy venues such as Kohana and Zachodni Brzeg

Thereafter, the party really gets going with the younger generation making full use of the bushes, hidden corners and terrace steps to gather around bongs and portable speakers whilst enjoying their own carryout booze. Arguably, it is this sense of spontaneity that best captures the Wisła spirit. That said, it’s equally important to visit the party boats moored to the riverbank, among them the Barka

Wynurzenie craft beer barge and the slick-looking Przystań Nowa Fala. Like last year, however, for the hottest check-in look no further than the sandy floating beach that is Kalima

Back on land, and it is crucial, also, that time is made for a visit to Paloma – with a terrace patio next to the immaculate form of the Museum on the Vistula, this on-edge venue has long been recognised for its killer fish tacos, outdoor screenings and summery cocktails. Not only is it a perfect poster child for Warsaw’s contemporary riverside scene, it’s also the ideal staging point from which to launch a deeper exploration of the Powiśle district beyond.

The Tourist Tram

Running until September, those wishing to see the most Warsaw has to offer have a choice of transport options that will take them past the city’s key attractions. Of these, best-known is the No. 36 vintage-style tram that rattles each Saturday and Sunday from Pl. Narutowicza to Metro Marymont – in the process, you’ll pass many key historical sights such as the former Ghetto area.

Chopin In The Park

Since 1959, it’s been a Warsaw rite of passage to gather on the lawns around the Chopin monument for free Sunday piano recitals in the rose-fringed gardens of Łazienki Park. Warsaw loves the sound of jazz, and where better to enjoy it than on the cobbles of the historic Rynek. Warsaw’s fountain park has updated its program this year to follow a Disney theme. Capable of displaying 16 million colours and firing 30,000 litres of water per minute, the 2,850 sq/m fountain complex sees spectacular audio-visual shows take place every weekend at 9.30 p.m. Drawing a million visitors per year, get there early to stake your place on the grassy embankment that leads down from New Town.

Uprising Commemorations

Although commemorations of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising are centred around the minute’s silence held at 5 p.m. on August 1st (a quite chilling moment that sees the entire city pause as one), events last through summer and include a flotilla bobbing down the river, funruns, open-air concerts, reenactments, song recitals, screenings and suchlike. Centrum Praskie Koneser – Warsaw’s cultural, art and entertainment hub invites you to explore the artistic side of Praga-Północ 365 days a year. However, the true cultural highlight is the annual Lato Konesera. Its countless attractions, planned in the atmospheric space of the revitalized Centrum Praskie Koneser, offer plenty of wonderful ideas for creative leisure time.

Music and dance

July is a perfect opportunity to listen to Praga's music and immerse yourself in the local folklore. On Sunday afternoons, the stage at Koneser Square belongs to Justyna Jary and band Alegancka Kapela, whose repertoire includes characteristic Praga’s ballads, perfect for dancing together. And that's not all – Sundays also feature concerts as part of the "New Sound of Warsaw Streets" competition. Artists who find inspiration in Warsaw's music present their talents in this contest. All these events are free.

Music enthusiasts will certainly appreciate the "Praga Classical Music Concerts" (free admission) events, which take place every Thursday until August 3rd. It's a series of seven music concerts at Koneser. The repertoire includes music from the classical era to romanticism and contemporary works. Among the performers, you'll find Polish artists, including those from the younger generation.

Furthermore, throughout July and August, everyone interested can participate in open-air dance parties on Koneser Square, combined with free dance lessons!

Exhibitions of great artists and the best plays

The Museum of Fantastic Art at Centrum Praskie Koneser is currently hosting the exhibition "Jerzy Duda-Gracz: Remnants." This monographic exhibition showcases the unique works of this exceptional artist, whose creations balance on the border of surrealism and symbolism. The exhibition consists of nearly sixty artworks, providing an overview of the painter's creativity from the late 1960s

to the beginning of the 21st century. What is particularly interesting is that the selection of exhibited pieces was made by theatre director Agata DudaGracz, the artist's daughter. The "Jerzy Duda-Gracz: Remnants" exhibition is open daily until October 8th, from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased for 40 PLN (regular) and 30 PLN (reduced) on ebilet. pl. FRIDA KAHLO: THE COLOUR OF LIFE

Coming this July to Łazienki Królewskie, a new exhibition seeks to cast light on the life of Frida Kahlo…

Although the work of Frida Kahlo is famous all over the world, her works are rarely seen in Poland. That stands to change with the Colour of Life exhibition hosted by the Royal Łazienki Museum. Not only will visitors be able to view the artist’s paintings, but also view archival films and photographs that will allow them to immerse themselves into Frida’s complex world.

Part of the exhibition will include a unique outdoor installation inspired by Casa Azul, her famous house and garden. Entering this space, visitors will find themselves transported to her vibrant world.

Included in the exhibition will be seminal works such as My Dress Hangs There (1933), Still Life with Watermelons (1953), and Coconuts (1951). The last two paintings come from the

Colección Acervo INBAL - Museo de Arte Moderno, a Mexican cultural institution dedicated to popularizing Mexican culture abroad.

The exhibition will be complemented by a short film dating from 1941 and showing Frida and her partner Diego at their estate. The film's author, the American photographer Nickolas Muray, was a personal friend and shot several images of the artist. Among the archival material, visitors will see Frida and Diego in their Casa Azul garden. Even allowing for the passage of time, the quality of the film, especially the intensity of the colours, has been perfectly preserved.

During the exhibition, events and educational workshops will be held, and these have been specifically aimed at allowing for a greater understanding of Frida’s work and the culture of Mexico.

Held for the first time in 2006, Audioriver has come a long way in a short time. From humble beginnings when just 10,000 attended the inaugural event, it has grown to become one of Central Europe’s best-loved dance festivals.

NATIONAL MUSEUM

Famed for its collection of Dutch and Flemish masters, it’s also the final word in Polish art, with all the greats represented – inc. Matejko, Witkiewicz and other such stars.

That’s reason enough for many, but for others the museum’s ace card was revealed at the end of 2017 with the opening of the Gallery of Polish Design. Offering a full 360 view of Polish 20th century applied arts, it’s an aesthetic joy featuring everything from iconic PRL era wall units and tulip chairs to kitschy toys and gizmos. Frankly, it’s a stunning museum that just keeps getting better – though delayed by covid, the start of the year saw the world class Gallery of Ancient Art added to the mix. NEON MUSEUM

Playing a key role in the government’s attempts to fuse socialist ideology with consumerism, the campaign to ‘neon-ize’ Poland saw gloomy cities still bearing the scars of war boldly gleam once more under lights designed and produced by many of the leading

artisans of the time. Salvaged from the scrapheap (in many instances, literally), this museum was created by Ilona Karwinska and David Hill who inadvertently kickstarted a nationwide trend and reignited the country’s appetite for neon. POLIN

Composed of eight galleries, this architectural marvel covers different stages of local Jewish history, from the middle ages to the present day. Highlights of this museum include a staggeringly beautiful replica of the ceiling of Gwoździec synagogue, and a ‘remake’ of a typical inter-war Jewish Warsaw street. That it was named the European Museum of the Year in 2016 such much for its ambitions to focus on more than the Holocaust alone. ul.

THE WARSAW RISING MUSEUM

If the throngs and sheer informational overload can often be daunting, it remains the most important museum in the capital, and quite arguably the country. Points of interest are rife and include a life-size replica of a B-24 Liberator plane as well as a claustrophobic ‘sewage tunnel’ through which visitors squeeze to get an idea of the kind of conditions combatants once faced. But it’s not the A-list sights that make the biggest impact, rather the smaller, highly personal curios: a pair of wedding bands forged from bullets; an Omega watch, it’s hands frozen at the same moment a bomb killed its owner; and a lucky cuddly mascot made from a German overcoat.
