To celebrate the new year, Parsippany Hills High School’s Key Club hosted its chapter election in late January. While this may seem early, it is to prepare for NJ Key Club’s biggest event of the year, District Convention. All original and new executive board members are required to attend this event. With nine executive board positions: President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Treasurer, two Historians and two Editors, and only three positions running unopposed: President, Vice President,

and Recording Secretary, the elections were off to a great start. With Patricia Kou as the 2014-2015 President, Vanessa Ting as the Vice President, and Justin Lu as the Recording Secretary, the rest of the members proceeded to hear speeches from the eleven other candidates. The two candidates for Treasurer went first: Shailee Shah and Vishal Mansuria.

Elections They were then followed by Asha Patel and Arijit Pingle, the two candidates for Corresponding Secretary. Three candidates ran for Editor: Tara Srinivasan, Ananya Nair, and Sharon Christian. Karoline Xiong, Thomas Shweh, Arielle Rosenberg, and Katie Kerrigan were the four candidates for Historian. For each position, the candidates were qualified and dedicated Key Clubbers. Each candidate was required to fill out an application prior to the election but it was their speeches

that really showed off their talents and abilities. We are excited to hear and announce the results of the election and see who will lead Parsippany Hills High School’s Key Club towards another great service year!

“I believe that my qualifications for Historian are best represented as a bag of candy: Like Laffy Taffy, I will be flexible with my schedule, I will stretch so that I can take photos for the scrapbook. Like Chocolates, I will be full of caffeine. I will pull all nighters just to get the job done. Like Jolly Ranchers, I want to be clear and consistent with you. I want to be honest and if I make a mistake, I won't hide it. Most importantly, I will be like a Jawbreaker, I will not crack under pressure. I will remain strong and firm until I finish the job. -- Thomas Shweh, Candidate for Historian

This year, Key Club will be holding its District Convention Harry Potter themed - allowing attendees to “Discover the Magic of Service.” As usual, Convention will be held at the Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch, New Jersey. The cost of attendance is $270 per person, but with the help of Parsippany’s Kiwanis, members only have to pay $205. There is also a discount depending on each member’s sales for Yankee Candle. There is a maximum of twenty people that are able to go on the trip, so make sure to see Mrs. Sturm for forms as soon as possible. They are due by February 12! District Convention offers a great opportunity to meet Key Clubbers across the state who share the same passion for service. Educational and developing workshops led by the District Board are offered to both general members and local chapter officers. Other exciting events at DCON include the impromptu essay contest, talent show, and the dances. There’ s a whole lot to do during this weekend, so we hope to see you there!
