A MESSAGE FROM

your lieutenant governor

Hello Division 20! Although the school year is coming to an end, service doesn’t have to stop just because school does! I hope you all continue to serve your home, school and community, whether it’s by participating in upcoming walks and marches for Relay for Life or other non-profits, or by just simply having an executive board meeting over the summer to plan out the coming year and recap successful, and maybe not so successful, events. To give you a recap of what I have been doing this past month, in May, I really got into the groove of my term: I visited one more club in our division, Montville High School, and trained most of their officers. I’d love to be able train the rest of the officers in our division, as well as meeting all of your clubs and members, so please let me know if you have any more meeting dates for the rest of the year if we have not already scheduled a training date! Beyond club visits, I’ve also attended the Regional Training Conferences and written articles for specific committees and events. As always, if you have any questions, comments, or just want to have a colloquial conversation, I’m only a phone call, text, Facebook message, or e-mail away. Yours in caring and service, Vanessa Ting DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | JUNE 2016

MEET OUR DIVISION’S

club presidents

Whether it’s communicating with general members, keeping in touch with district officers, or just ensuring that everything, from a general meeting to a large-scale service project, is running smoothly -- club presidents are an integral and invaluable part of the Key Club experience. Here are two of our division’s club presidents, and check back in next month’s newsletter to meet more of our division’s club presidents!

PARSIPPANY HIGH SCHOOL:

Welcome, Key Clubbers, to the May newsletter of the 2016-2017 service year! My name is Stephanie and I am serving as Parsippany High School's '16-'17 president. Key Club basically consumed my life. While people are at a sweet 16 on a Saturday night, I am having fun in my room planning and organizing upcoming events for our community. True story. But by all means, go to your sweet 16, I'm not judging. And not to mention I occasionally spend my leisure time reading other schools' newsletters because I am that much of a Key Club nerd. Other than that, I'm just a girl who taught herself to sing the alphabet backwards from As the Bell Rings when she was in the second grade, and has an unreasonable addiction to photography. Also, if you ever want my attention, just say Harry Potter or Key Club (obviously) and I am there in a flash. In general terms, my primary job is to lead. It sounds simple, but there are a few things--maybe a little more than a few--that I have to do to make sure I do this job right! Delegate, delegate, delegate! Basically Key Club presidency in 3 words. I have to make sure each officer is carrying out his/her own duties right with their full dedication and potential, like informing the recording secretary of handing in the DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | JUNE 2016

next CMRF on time, and making sure the editor issues the next monthly newsletter, etc. It is also an essential that I make sure each event is running smoothly and according to plan during both the planning phase and the when-it-is-actuallyhappening phase. It's important to show that we've done all we could as Key Clubbers to represent PHS and Key Club as a whole to its full potential. I also make officer meeting and general meeting agendas each week, organizing what the board will be discussing and announcing at each officer and general meeting. It is also my job to keep in touch with our awesomesauce division Lieutenant Governor (who made this newsletter by the way). I also get to choose which officer posts what announcement in our Facebook group and email. It helps keep our board members active, and also so the general members don't get tired from hearing from the same person in every post. All in all, I have a lot of duties as a president. There is a lot to remember! But I never for one moment fulfill the jobs that come with this position with a heart of distress or annoyance, but rather with delectation and enlightenment. I am constantly striving to better myself, others, and most of all, the community, through learning from my mistakes, encouraging others, and not taking this opportunity I have to serve the people around me for granted for even one second. I hope one day your love for servicing will grow to the amount mine has, since we all have the same duty in the end, and that is helping those around us.

PARSIPPANY HILLS HIGH SCHOOL: My name is Asha Patel, and it is my honor to introduce myself as the Parsippany Hills Key Club President! While I will surely miss our old Exec. Board, I am extremely excited to see the new things our club will accomplish in the new service year! I wish to spread my passion of service to those around me and to encourage all of you to do the same. My Key Club journey has been an amazing experience thus far and I am positive that this next year will bring more memories. There is never a day where I don’t fall in love with Key Club all over again and I can’t wait to share these experiences with all of you! DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | JUNE 2016

KEY CLUB INTERNATIONAL’S

Youth Opportunities Fund Youth Opportunities Fund, provided by Kiwanis International Foundation just for Key Club and its members, gives grants from $100-$2000 for

members needing financial assistance to complete their service projects. If you’ve recognized a problem in your home, school, and community and

want to change it, the YOF can help you. Look out for applications in July, and you can submit your application by October 15.

“YOF grants can help you take action. Look around and identify the things that need to get done in your school, community or world.”

Want to make a difference in your home, school, and community, but not quite sure how? Check out some of these service project ideas below to get started, and you can even apply for a Youth Opportunities Fund grant to really give your service project a head start.

1.

Sew trauma dolls for children that can be used in local hospitals, for doctors to explain specific procedures and injuries to children in a fun, approachable, and understanding way. The trauma doll can also serve as a new toy for the children, and make the hospital stay a little more comfortable. With a little creativity and patience, each member can make a doll that can brighten, or even change, a life in the hospital.

2.

Hold a variety show for members in your community or school: whether that be residents of an orphanage, senior center home, hospital, nursing home, or even just staff and students of your school or members of your Kiwanis. This is a fun way for each member of your local club to get involved by showing off their talents, and a fun way to engage members of your local community. The acts can be fun and simple, or complex and intense: it definitely depends on your audience and what your members want to do!

3.

Have a carnival night in your school hall or auditorium, or if your school is strict about holding events like mine is, ask a local athletic center if they want to host your event. You can easily decorate the location to make it carnival-themed with balloons and streamers, and you can also easily make up carnival-like events like a ring toss, weight guess, or whack-a-mole. Invite your community and school to truly have a successful event, and make sure that at the event, you have different club members manning each carnival activity.
