A MESSAGE FROM

your lieutenant governor

Hello Division 20! It has been an exciting first month of my term, and I hope the same has been true for you with the first month of the service year. To give you a recap of what I have been doing this past month, in April I was fortunate enough to meet some of the wonderful members in our division when I visited Mountain Lakes High School and Parsippany High School. I’ve definitely learned some tips and tricks to keep members engaged and meetings interesting, and you can learn some of those tips at our Spring Regional Training Conference at James Caldwell High School on May 14th! Our division started off this month strong with the March of Dimes divisional event: despite the rainy weather and the AP exams looming around the corner, members from Parsippany, Parsippany Hills, and Mountain Lakes still showed up! I really appreciate all the clubs that participated, and with your help, we raised over $200 for the fight against premature birth. As always, if you have any questions, comments, or just want to have a colloquial conversation, I’m only a phone call, text, Facebook message, or e-mail away. Yours in caring and service, Vanessa Ting DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | MAY 2016

A MESSAGE FROM

your district governor

Hello Division 20! My name is Luke McGeown, and I am happy to announce that I will be serving as District Governor for the 2016-2017 Service Year. I have always been driven to do everything in my capacity to make this world a better place. Discovering the Kiwanis Family in high school brought this passion to a new level. I never imagined that I would ever find over twelve thousand high schoolers so willing to serve their homes, schools, and communities. Over these past few years, I have seen our family accomplish feats I never could have imagined. We just finished an outstanding service year, with an outstanding group of over twelve thousand individuals who dedicated themselves to serving those who need it most. Entering into the new service year, we have a new district board dedicated to making sure that we can do everything possible for our homes, schools, and communities. I give you my pledge that we will do everything to make this service year great. We will continue to grow and strengthen our district throughout this service year to make the greatest positive change possible. Yours in caring and service, Luke McGeown DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | MAY 2016

DIVISIONAL EVENT:

March for Babies Walk

Every year, more than half a million babies are born premature in the United States. Premature birth is the number one killer of newborns, and babies born as little as just a few weeks early are at risk for severe health problems and life-long disabilities. Participating in the walk is something small that everyone can do to help, and I sincerely thank all those who showed up despite the rainy weather and AP exams on May 1st at Fairleigh Dickinson University to participate in the March for Babies, my divisional

event. The inter-divisional event, held with LTG of Division 19 Ben Rogovin, and LTG of Division 21, Courtney Vita, raised over 200 dollars in online donations and over 100 dollars at the march. Specific donation amounts will not be released until later next week, but I’ll be sure to let you all know how much we contributed as a division. Regardless, thank you to the members from Parsippany, Parsippany Hills, and Mountain Lakes that came, donated, and joined the fight against premature birth.

ICON is undoubtedly the biggest Key Club event of the year. Key Clubbers from all around, not only the nation, but the world come to celebrate a whole year of service. This summer, Key Club International Convention will be held in the peach state at Atlanta, Georgia! The New Jersey District Tour of International Convention is jam-packed with amazing plans. First on the list is the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the western hemisphere. If fish and marine animals aren’t your thing, don’t worry, the World of Coke is a place everyone will love. You will not only tour the facility and learn about the history of Coke, but also get to try sodas from over one-hundred different countries! Other attractions on the list include Stone Mountain, the Civil Rights Museum and much more.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION So where in Atlanta is this convention, you ask? The Atlanta Marriott Marquis. Not only does this beautiful hotel look like a giant ribcage, it’s in the heart of Atlanta, in close proximity to everything fun and exciting about the city. Going to convention is a great opportunity to grow as a Key Clubber and learn ways to better yourself. ICON workshops are interesting and can give you ideas you never had before. Discover new ideas for service events, learn how to better meetings, figure out how to facilitate communication and much more. Also don’t forget that going to International Convention as a voting representative means that you can partake in the House of Delegates and vote for your new 2016-2017 International Board! Now, ICON is fun, but it also stands for something much greater. It is the celebration of the end of a great service year and the birth of a new one. It is the celebration of all the hard work put in by Key Clubbers from all around the world. It is the celebration of the change that this club has brought to people. ICON is a once in a life-time experience, so don’t miss out. See you in Georgia! DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | MAY 2016
