Lt. Governor’s Introduction Letter St. Patrick’s Day Parade Ways to Start Your Service Year DCON Recap Distinguished Officers and Pictures Contact Information

Introduction Letter from your Lieutenant Governor Hello Division 20! My name is Vanessa Ting, I am from Parsippany Hills High School, and I am truly honored to serve as your 2016-2017 Lieutenant Governor. I joined Key Club as a freshman not because I wanted to change the world, nor because I wanted to join the largest service organization in the world. As the confused, awkward, and utterly lost freshman I was, I simply joined Key Club because it was something that my sister had done. Three years later, now as a junior, little would I know how much Key Club would change my life. As clichÊ as that might sound, I remember running for club editor my freshman year and not even being able to look at the members because I was so nervous; two years later, because of my experiences with public speaking and communicating in Key Club, I am now able to actually look at the people I am talking to. More importantly, I’ve learned that service does not just have to involve elaborate service projects or fundraising hundreds of dollars for the district project: contributing to your community can be something as little as making someone smile in a local parade. Just so you get to know me as a person, and beyond a name or a position, outside of Key Club I am a member of FBLA and DECA. I also spend much of my time taking daily naps and eating food at all hours of the day. DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | APRIL 2016

In all seriousness, through my experiences, I have truly and personally understood the power of Key Club. To strengthen and unite our division, I plan to: ● ● ● ● ●

Hold two divisional events Train all club officers before Fall Rally Meet quorum for all five Divisional Council Meetings Build a K-family club in the division Establish a Division 20 Instagram account

Above all, my most important priority is to communicate with all clubs and members. Please do not hesitate to contact me through any means if you have any questions or concerns, and keep me updated with your upcoming events and goals! Here in Key Club, we don’t make keys, we make a difference – and I hope that we can make a difference together. Yours in caring and service,

Vanessa Ting 2016-2017 Division 20 Lieutenant Governor New Jersey District of Key Club International

Morris County St. Patrick’s Day Parade Every year since 1979, the Morris County St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been held to provide a safe, fun-filled day for Morris County residents and their families to enjoy each spring. In the past 36 years, the parade has grown to include over 120 diverse units, including over 20 bands and over 4000 marchers, with 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. For the last couple of years, the Morristown Kiwanis has participated in the parade. This year, several of Morristown High School and Parsippany Hills High School Key Clubbers walked with Morristown and Parsippany Kiwanis members at the parade.

The school year may be drawing to a close, but the service year has just begun! Club and membership activity tends to decline during this time of year, but the nice weather is the perfect opportunity for your club to hold service activities. Here are three ways for you to generate enthusiasm and excitement among your members, and promote continued service through the spring.

1.

Volunteer for at least two hours every month! There are so many activities you can participate in at Key Club and in your club, from bringing in food donations to participating in K-Family events and charity walks. Most of the opportunities for service are fun and easy, and they’re all for improving our school and community. Be on the lookout for more information on the March of Dimes March for Babies divisional event!

2.

Hold a school-wide event! This may sound complicated, but the school-wide event can be something as simple as posting flyers around your school to promote the NJ Federation of Food Banks, or collecting can tabs in your cafeteria during lunch periods for a local charity. The event not only gives members more opportunities to participate in Key Club, but also raises awareness of Key Club in your school.

3.

Hold an end-of-year service party! Everyone loves parties and free food, so you’ll definitely get a lot of membership participation and attendance if your club chooses to hold an end-of-year service party. Such an event would be a great way for you to end a successful school year, while raising awareness for the continued service activities available like bringing in cans for the New Jersey Federation of Food Banks.

RECAP DISTRICT CONVENTION 2016 This year’s agent-themed District Convention took place on April 1st April 3rd to celebrate the end of of a successful service year. Throughout the weekend, agents of service received recognition for their accomplishments, competed in contests, attended workshops, and elected the 2016-2017 NJ District Executive Board. Check out this brief day-to-day recap to see what went on! Friday, Day One: Opening session initiated the start of the agent orientation, and Key Clubbers heard from Keynote Speaker John Shertzer, Chief Programs Officer of Kiwanis International. Contests and the talent show were introduced, and executive candidates were also nominated to run. After the session, each candidate for executive board and international office endorsement went around to nine different rooms to campaign and caucus. DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | APRIL 2016

Saturday, Day Two: Key Clubbers across the state wore blue in solidarity to recognize World Autism Awareness Day. A meet-thecandidates session started the morning, where each candidate paraded around the ballroom and went through another round of speeches and caucusing. Three sessions of workshops followed after, and after the workshops an appreciation session was held to recognize Distinguished Officers, 100% CMRF awards, and Early Bird/Big Ten awards. Most members enjoyed their free time and explored the beach and boardwalk, following the appreciation session! Voting delegates also voted on the 2016-2017 NJ District Executive Board, and a second recognition session and dance ended the night. Sunday, Day Three: A sad Farewell Session marked the end of District Convention, and as the District Executive Officers were retired new District Officers were installed! Please help me welcome the new District Governor, Luke McGeown, District Secretary, Meghan Nevola, District Treasurer, Ciara Clarkin, and District Editor, Julien Rosenbloom. PAGE 8
