Key Club Week! Key Club Week is an annual event that almost every chapter of Key Club takes part in across the nation! It gives the opportunity for members to show their community what Key Club is all about: service. This year, it took place from November 3th-7th, and here’s what we did: Show Your K in Every Way - Wear all your Key Club gear and show off to everyone what Key Club is all about! Kudos to the Key Players - Personally thank every supporter of Key Club you know- teachers, friends, family, anyone! Do something unique to recognize their contributions. Connect the K’s - Kew Club is the largest high school service organization in the world, but it’s also part of a much larger family of Kiwanis. Team up with your local Kiwanis, Circle K international, Builders Club, and Kiwanis Kids for a joint service project. Bring a Friend to Key Club - Bring a new person to your next key club meeting. The more members there are, the more service! Your Way - This is your chance to take a more active role and make a change. Collaborate on a service project or create a new activity to give back- whatever you do, run with it! Key Notes - November 2014 - Volume I Issue VI - Page II

A Visit From Our Lieutenant Governor:

Aleena Kazmi

Our Key Club chapter ended November in a very exciting way; beyond discussing CSH cards and a new project we’re doing with the Student Council, we welcomed a visitor this past Tuesday, November 25: our LTG. Aleena, a senior at Parsippany High School, shared her experiences running for her position and managing Key Club and her extracurriculars. She encouraged us to take a more active role and run for not only District 20’s LTG this upcoming January, but also potentially the state executive board. After all, every member of our state executive board except for our district governor, Sam Levisay, comes from local chapter positions. We encourage you to run for our school’s positions as well! Only two of the current executive board members are not seniors; that means there are eight positions open: recording and corresponding secretary, treasurer, two bulletin editors, two historians, and webmaster. We also interviewed Aleena to get a more clear description of what it’s like to be a LTG:

What has been your favorite moment as a Lieutenant Governor? From April to November, my term as Lieutenant Governor has been full of some great moments. My experiences have led me to meet interesting people from all over the world at ICON, clean up beaches in the rain at K-Family Picnic, and speaking at Fall Rally in front of 3,000 people. Despite all of these amazing Key Club adventures, my favorite moment is the hour or so after our board meeting hailed as “Board Bonding.” In this hour before curfew, the entire board gets into their sweats and pjs, letting loose from the stresses of school and Key Club. It’s really the best time to connect with the amazing high school students that I have the honor of working with and it’s led to some pretty interesting games. Board bonding has allowed me to open up my shell and really connect with the rest of the board. Why did you want to be Lieutenant Governor? I joined Key Club because of my sister, and she was the one who encouraged me to run for editor my freshman year. Because of that, I was able to develop my leadership skills earlier on in my high school career, which was a huge step for me. That year, I also attended my first DCON and I realized how large of an impact Key Club actually has. The efforts of the district board combined with the motivational workshops served as a second source of inspiration for me. After freshman year, I Key Notes - November 2014 - Volume I Issue VI - Page IV

was on a mission to involve myself further and learn what Key Club truly has to offer. Use one word to describe your Key Club experiences. It’s really hard to sum up so many diverse experiences in one word, but I would say “illuminative.” How do you handle Key Club, marching band, and school? Honestly, it’s been really hard. I mistakenly signed up for 6 AP classes this year, which is my entire schedule, so with one day of lunch a week, hours of homework, no weekends due to marching band games and competitions, and hours of Key Club work to catch up on, I’ve definitely been more than sleep deprived. While it sounds really awful, I’ve made it through fairly unscathed – I managed to find a support system in friends and family. I have my best friend at school who always pushes me to work, but Key Club also opened me up to new friends who go through the same pressures that I’m under. We formed a group chat where everyone complains, asks questions, and deals with the struggles of being an LTG, which has definitely helped the process along. Overall, I would say that time management will always be my best friend and setting up a priority list of my work helps me organize. Can you describe the process of running for Lieutenant Governor? When you run for Lieutenant Governor, the process varies based on how many people run. If there are more than two candidates running, the process simply involves a 3-minute speech followed by 5 minutes of caucus questions where attendees can question you about your knowledge of Key Club and your motivation for running. Once each candidate goes through this process, a vote will take place. If a majority is not met, then candidates will have the opportunity for another 1-minute speech and 1 minute of questions. It’s important to be prepared for all scenarios, and if you are interested, information will be sent to you. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me at my email – aleenakazmi.ltg20@gmail.com.

CSH Cards We thank everyone who made Fall CSH cards! They looked amazing, and they all went to a great cause: Children’s Specialized Hospitals. Our next batch of CSH cards will be due December 12; these will be more winter cards as opposed to specific holiday cards. We are excited to see everyone’s creations!

Toy Drive When there’s the excitement for no school and delicious food, it’s easy to forget what Thanksgiving is really about: being thankful. Our Student Council is currently running a toy drive for the Jersey Battered Women’s Shelter, a service committed in preventing domestic abuse and violence. Children that live with their mothers in safe houses and shelters often do not have the luxury of toys.

Key Club is offering hours for anyone who donates toys to their homeroom! Remember to include a post-it note on the toy with your name and ‘Key Club,’ to get credit. This is for an amazing cause, and it’s an easy way to get hours. The toy drive ends on December 8th,so please keep that in mind. Do not bring any toys to D-25, only bring them to your homeroom.
