Letter from the chairman
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Twenty-five years ago, a group of industry leaders came together with a shared vision. They knew if they wanted to change the tide, they would need to act and work together to promote, protect and grow the professional pest control industry in a time of adversity and less than ideal public opinion. Fast-forward to 2022 and that same organization, the Professional Pest Management Alliance, is indeed building a bright legacy for generations to come.
PPMA, the consumer marketing arm of the National Pest Management Association, is responsible for engaging directly with consumers and elevating the public’s perception of professional pest control services. We are making incredible strides. According to PPMA’s Attitudes and Perceptions Survey, 85% of homeowners across several generations believe pest control professionals play a key role in protecting public health and family health, and that pest control services protect against pest-borne diseases, food contamination and allergy and asthma triggers. Ultimately, we are encouraging market growth by educating both consumer and commercial audiences about the value and importance of professional pest control when it comes to protecting homes, health, our nation’s food supply and the vital businesses that power this country.
For a quarter century, PPMA has tirelessly focused on this mission and has been successful by strategically tailoring programs and tactics to engage with customers. Today, that means everything from a powerful public relations effort placing articles and segments in the news media, to public service announcement campaigns reaching people across the airwaves, to expansive digital advertising efforts and content sharing across multiple platforms on social media. We develop campaigns and produce videos that are engaging and entertaining while also being educational. We carefully craft our content and lean on artificial intelligence and public polling to identify trends and pests of most concern. And through it all, we drive audiences back to PestWorld.org where they can learn more about pests that can be problematic in their home or business, and we tell them to call YOU.
The efforts of PPMA elevate, promote and benefit the entire industry. Truth be told, over 25 years, we have been able to accomplish a tremendous amount of work to support you and your business. I’m talking billions of positive impressions, tens of millions of website visitors, tens of thousands of news stories and thousands of hours of PSA airtime.
We are moving the needle. In 2001, when we first asked the question of homeowners, “Have you used professional pest control services in the past
year?” – 18% said yes. When we recently asked that same question, 53% said yes. That is a 194% increase in the number of homeowners reporting to use your services! While PPMA doesn’t take credit for all that growth, we are indeed a leading factor. In fact, Pest Control Technology Magazine recognizes PPMA as the number one driver of industry growth, as noted in its 2022 Top 100 issue.
This critical work is funded 100% through voluntary financial contributions from generous pest control firms, members of the supplier community and friends of the industry. These companies are fully committed and are contributing to PPMA’s legacy and to the growth of the professional pest management industry.
Are you helping to build this bright legacy? If not for the collective industry, consider doing it for your own business. And don’t just take it from me, a 25-year Guardian-level investor. Read this report to learn why others invest in PPMA, many of whom have been with PPMA from the beginning. Trust me when I tell you, it is a smart decision.
Looking back on another wonderful year, I would like to express my deep respect and gratitude to the PPMA Board of Directors for their continued leadership and service. Together, we also want to share our appreciation for the Guardianlevel investors who generously give 1/10th of 1% of their annual revenues to PPMA’s programming, and to thank our Contributors and the Supplier community for your steadfast support as well. Every dollar counts and leads to positive and powerful change. We would not have gotten to 25 years without you, and we are looking forward to doing even more in the next 25 years… together.
Regards,
Bobby Jenkins, Chairman, PPMA ABC Home & Commercial Services Austin, TXIt has been an honor serving as your Executive Director of PPMA for nearly 15 years and to have worked in this industry for over 20. Thank you for your trust as we built this organization together and for your passion and shared belief that we could elevate our industry to new heights. Just look at what we’ve accomplished in 25 years!
In 2022, we celebrated our milestone Silver Anniversary in a big way while also executing our dynamic marketing plan to drive public awareness around the value of working with professional pest control companies. When this organization was formed 25 years ago, it was built on the framework that “a rising tide lifts all boats.” We have done that, folks. And today, our tide is stronger than ever. In fact, Pest Control Technology Magazine once again named PPMA as the #1 REASON FOR INDUSTRY GROWTH! The work of PPMA has indeed prompted more people to visit PestWorld.org to learn about pests and to find pest control services.
While there will always be more work to do, I can’t wait to see what the next 25 years will bring to this fabulous industry.
So, while I pass the torch to my successor, the very talented, driven and capable Jim Fredericks, I will be watching and cheering you on as you continue to be champions and advocates for the industry. I am excited to see all that PPMA accomplishes in this next chapter.
With Gratitude and Appreciation,
Cindy Mannes Executive Director, PPMA 2001-2009, 2015-2022When this organization was formed 25 years ago, it was built on the framework that “a rising tide lifts all boats.” We have done that, folks. And today, our tide is stronger than ever.”
Dear PPMA Supporter,
This year PPMA celebrated its silver anniversary and the organization has never been stronger. In fact, our entire industry has never been stronger, which is, in part, a direct result of the crucial work PPMA has done for 25 years to grow, promote, protect, and defend professional pest control through outreach to residential and commercial audiences, and always with an eye towards the future. This annual report illustrates all the ways PPMA has been hard at work for you in 2022. And, of course, we could not have done it without the generous financial contributions of hundreds of companies who recognize the critical impact of their participation. Thank you!
Our industry has seen transformative change over the last 25 years. Likewise, our organization is doing the same as we say goodbye to an absolute legend and valued colleague, Cindy Mannes, who was at the helm of this organization for almost 15 years. We wish her all the best in her retirement and thank her for her leadership to promote and protect our industry.
As I begin my service as PPMA’s new Executive Director, I am filled with pride to represent this essential industry and carry out our mandate to keep our families and businesses safe. I spent the last months of 2022 immersing myself in PPMA and preparing for the transition, and I am incredibly energized by the future of the industry and our One Bright Legacy. The warm welcome from the PPMA investor community has been overwhelming, and further fuels my passion for the industry and our people. We’ve hit the ground running in 2023 and look forward to the next 25 years of PPMA making an impact on the industry, helping companies grow, and helping consumers better understand the importance of pest control. We are in for some exciting times, and I am so honored to be a part of it with you.
Best,
Jim Fredericks Executive Director, PPMAMaking Movie Magic
INTRODUCING DO NOT DISTURB
Stinging insect nests are dangerous territory, and the inspiration behind our latest large-scale consumer campaign, “Do Not Disturb.” In partnership with the New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board, PPMA produced an unparalleled video series and educational microsite to show consumers just how easy it is to accidentally disturb a stinging or biting insect nest, as well as the not-so-friendly responses that often follow. As the peak of 2023 stinging insect season rolls around, we’ll launch this video project to give consumers need-to-know pest prevention tips and remind them of the importance of working with professionals when stinging insects are present.
EXPANDING OUR VIDEO LIBRARY
Alongside our larger video campaign, we debuted three new video projects in 2022 to spotlight the health and property threats posed by pests. Our “You Won’t Believe This” videos, which yielded 179,700 video views on YouTube and Facebook, revealed little-known facts about mosquitoes, termites and bed bugs. Our “Bug Battles” series, which depicts hypothetical matchups between two different pests, captured more than 759,500 video views – and counting! Viewers enjoy guessing which pest will be crowned the ultimate champion, setting season two up for major success in 2023. Lastly, we continue to observe consumer interest in “Invasive Species,” our custom-animated series, which shines a light on invasive pests and how they spread across the U.S.

Creating a Media Swarm
PPMA’s consumer media relations efforts secured 500 media placements in national and regional markets across the country, resulting in over 426 million impressions with an estimated worth of $9.4 million in publicity value. For perspective, that’s the equivalent of every person in New York City viewing a PPMA media placement 50 times.
426,400,000 impressions
$9,400,000 in publicity value
Some of our most memorable pieces include stories with USA Today, AccuWeather, Good Housekeeping, the Weather Channel and Good Morning America. This year, news outlets wanted to learn more about climate change and its impact on pest populations, seasonal prevention tips, PPMA’s seasonal Bug Barometer® and Vector Sectors™ as well as our annual special awareness observances such as Termite Awareness Week, Tick Awareness Week, Bed Bug Awareness Week, Rodent Awareness Week and National Pest Management Month.
Watching Out for Seasonal Pests
BUG BAROMETER®
PPMA’s seasonal pest predictions have become a staple in our media relations strategy, providing consumers across the country with region-specific forecasts and helpful information to keep their families and properties safe from pest threats. With the guidance of NPMA’s certified entomologists, we release the research-backed data on a bi-annual basis and work directly with key media outlets to spread the word about the weather’s impact on pest pressures. In 2022, our Bug Barometer® forecast garnered 34 media wins, including coverage on The Weather Channel, PennLive and Detroit News Online, amassing more than 2.2 million impressions
2,200,000 impressions
VECTOR SECTORS™
Vector pests pose a serious threat to human health, which makes our bi-annual Vector Sectors™ watchlist a vital resource for media reporters and the American public alike. This report never ceases to gain nationwide attention, including features on The Weather Channel and in local markets that make it on our list.

MEDIA PLACEMENTS
In another strong year for our commercial media relations, we secured 22 media placements in various vertical publications that serve our commercial audience, resulting in over 160,000 impressions. Several placements were generated by developing a strong partnership with CleanLink, an information resource for sanitary supply distributors, building service contractors and in-house cleaning professionals. Additional noteworthy coverage included bylines in Food Engineering Magazine, Facilities Net, Facility Cleaning and Maintenance, Facilitator Magazine, Food Quality & Safety, Inside Self-Storage and QA: Quality Assurance & Food Safety Magazine. Coverage throughout the year spanned diverse topics and industries, including cleaning and sanitation, lodging, self-storage, facilities management, food processing and safety, and more.

Keeping Up with Consumers
As the digital landscape continues to change, PPMA works to adapt its strategy for consumer websites to ensure PestWorld.org and PestWorldForKids.org are performing at the highest level. In 2022, both websites recorded a combined 6.1 million sessions, which is nearly the same number of McDonald’s burgers sold each day. By developing new content with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in mind, such as Pest Guides and informative articles, PPMA has established PestWorld.org as a top resource for consumers with 284 #1 keyword rankings for desktop and 376 #1 keyword rankings for mobile.
6.5 million total website sessions
ORGANIC RESULTS
With five organic social media profiles under our belt in 2022, we reached a wealth of intrigued consumers who were itching to learn more about the world of pests. Across Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and TikTok, we captured more than 7.7 million organic impressions by serving our target digital audiences with eye-catching content around seasonal pest issues. Throughout the year, we continued to share our expertise through Facebook Live Chats which highlighted how pests survive winter, termite damage, how to perform a tick check, bed bug prevention during summer travel and threats posed by rodents.
2023 is going to be a big year for PestWorld.org as it will undergo a massive redesign. This overhaul of the website will include making necessary changes to functionality and user experience based on what we’ve learned from our reporting platforms. We’ll also enhance the overall design of the site to be more modern.
Spending to Extend Our Reach
While organic social media supports consumer awareness for PPMA and the work we do, paid social media campaigns take our digital efforts the extra mile by sharing our content with new, targeted audiences.
We ran digital ad campaigns across Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. That’s right! PPMA launched its inaugural Instagram website traffic campaign to tap into yet another new audience. The adoption of another popular platform provides valuable opportunity to leverage our expansive video library, showcase the expertise of our entomologists, and remind curious users about the important work of pest control professionals. In total, these paid campaigns generated a total of 72.5 million paid impressions in 2022.
CONTENT SYNDICATION
Social media isn’t the only digital realm to put spend behind our informative content. All year round, we utilize strategic content syndication campaigns to drive valuable traffic to our consumer websites. Our content syndication efforts place our educational content on third-party media websites, which is a tried-and-true tactic to catch users’ attention as they read articles from their favorite media sources.
Last year alone, these advertisements produced over 230 million impressions. Not only is that colossal number impressive on its own, but it also marks a 139% increase from last year!

PSAs Airing from Coast-to-Coast
500,000,000 IMPRESSIONS FROM PSAs
PPMA produces award-winning public service announcements that run across tv and radio stations nationwide. It is a critical program that allows us to reach Americans in their living rooms and over the airwaves to share vital health information about the threats many pests can pose to our families and homes. These PSAs air across the U.S. on national networks and local affiliates in the top 210 media markets and help build awareness about the value of maintaining a pest-free home. In 2022, these PSAs aired an astounding 108,479 times, accumulating nearly 500 million impressions, worth an estimated ad value of $18.7 million. That’s the equivalent of buying several commercials to air during the Super Bowl.

Staying on the Pulse of Pest Perception
The research arm of PPMA continues to provide us with a deeper understanding of our diverse consumer audience. Our periodic polls and surveys allow us to ask specific, timely questions about various pest topics in addition to the usage of pest control services and perceptions of the industry. On the other hand, our Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered research database monitors over a billion consumer conversations each year, by which we can deduce the top pest concerns across the nation and ascertain potential health and home threats.
Our research collateral, including our newly compiled resource document of 2022 research statistics, is readily available to Mainframe subscribers to inform marketing and media relations efforts and to provide tactical guidelines to resonate with various audiences.
TOP STATISTICS FROM 2022 CONSUMER RESEARCH*
Throughout the year, we conducted a series of online surveys via The Harris Poll. Here are the top five statistics we discovered from our 2022 research:
51% of American homeowners have never hired a licensed pest control professional to conduct a termite inspection on their homes.
63% of Americans have seen or removed a tick from themselves, someone else or a pet.
59% of U.S. homeowners would switch to a different hotel or motel if they found bed bugs at a hotel or motel they were staying in.
These are the top places American homeowners who have ever found a rodent in their home spotted the pest:
37% Kitchen
32% Garage/Shed
30% Basement
26% Backyard
17% Living Room
10% of Americans have found pests like spiders, insects and rodents in their real holiday decorations (e.g., fresh-cut trees, wreaths, garlands, pinecones).
17% Attic
16% Bedroom
14% Bathroom
7% Car
WHAT PESTS ARE CONSUMERS TALKING ABOUT?**
Using our artificial intelligence database, PPMA determined the top ten pests that consumers were talking about in 2022:
Flies
Rodents
(i.e. rats and mice)
Stinging Insects
(i.e. hornets and wasps)
Mosquitoes
Ticks and Fleas Bats
Spiders
Occasional Invaders (i.e. crickets, scorpions, centipedes, and stinkbugs)
Nuisance Wildlife
(i.e. squirrels, raccoons, and opossums)
Moths
Making Strides for 25 Years and Counting!
2022 was a monumental year for a multitude of reasons. Beyond the many aforementioned accomplishments, we celebrated PPMA’s milestone Silver Anniversary. For 25 years, PPMA has maintained an established, reputable role as the pest control industry’s proactive voice. In fact, PCT Magazine attributes the industry’s growth in part to the critical work of PPMA. It also commemorated our quarter century anniversary with a beautiful, print supplement detailing the many ways in which PPMA has fulfilled our mandate to promote, protect, defend and grow the industry, all while educating consumers about the wonderful work pest professionals do each and every day as protectors of public health and property.
Every month, we keep PPMA investors up to date on our programming via the PPMA Update. This e-blast recaps our social media and digital advertising results, big media relations wins, consumer website performance, artificial intelligence reports and PSA campaigns. Additionally, the What’s New on Mainframe e-blast shares the top new assets uploaded to the subscriber site and shares helpful tips on how to use the materials in your own marketing programs.

The Professional Pest Management Alliance was founded in 1997 to grow, promote and defend the pest management industry. In 2022, PPMA celebrated its 25th anniversary, serving as the voice of the industry and continuing its mission to proactively provide the public with information and education on the value of professional pest management through its media relations, public service announcement, advertising and online communications programs it conducts on behalf of the National Pest Management Association. The work of PPMA is funded 100% through voluntary monetary donations made by pest control companies, the supplier community and friends of the industry. Together we are growing the industry.
