CHAIRMAN’S REPORT The three rallies listed for April were all well supported and their success was boosted by fine sunny weather. Thanks to Neale Cook for his organisation of the P-Group Rally, Malcolm McGibbon who originally initiated and now runs the Malvern Run for Anzac weekend each year, and Graeme Sword, ably supported by Tony Meikle for organising the Autumn Three-day Run over Anzac Weekend. There is a lot of time and effort put into these events and it is good to see that they are so well supported. I’m pleased to be able to report that we have a candidate prepared to fill the position of Club Captain, after this role has been vacant for a couple of seasons with the general committee managing activities as best as possible. After managing the Branch’s finances very ably for five years, Kevin Sarjeant will be

retiring from the position of Treasurer at the end of this term and we thank ROSS BUTLER Kevin for all that Chairman ph 03 352 3160 he has done in ensuring that the Branch remains in a sound position financially. It’s pleasing to be able to report that we have a well qualified candidate to take the reins from Kevin. Whilst is great to know that these very important positions are filled, I would draw your attention to the vacancies on the Committee and it would be really good for these to be filled as we go into the new season. Give some thought to putting yourself forward for committee, new input is always welcome.

SECRETARY’S REPORT AGM for the branch 20th June. Have you put your name forward for any of the jobs that are constantly coming up to fill.

inclination to give it a go Don would love to chat to you.

The one that springs to mind this month is the replacement for Don Muller as Noggin Displays Convenor.

Further to this Secretary Mike Foster is ph 03 338 2320 always looking for willing helpers to give up a morning once or twice a month looking after the maintenance of the buildings and grounds, a very rewarding pastime. We all know how the grass and weeds just keeps growing.

Don wishes to spend a bit more of his time in the massive job of the Archives for the club which is a job he and Marlene have taken to heart, and for those who have visited I’m sure you will agree it is impressive. Regarding the Noggin displays Don has done a tremendous job over the last approx eight years with many nights of very interesting displays. As you know the displays often feature winners of previous months rallies with the occasional out of the box events like pedal cars, member hobbies. Don is prepared to help a new volunteer move into the role where needed. Like all of these roles everybody has different ideas on what would work and what might not, if you think you have the

ROD THROWER

So think about it, what can you do to help in what ever small way to make this huge branch of approx 1,200 members keep ticking over and attracting younger members (They are out there with the popularity of Irishman Rally and the gymkhana events proving this). See you at Old Cars Bikes and Coffee Sunday 16 May and 20 June and stay for the AGM in the afternoon.

ARE YOU GOOD WITH STAINLESS STEEL? Your help is needed As many of you are aware, we are in the process of upgrading the kitchen. The project is now nearing the end, and we will be fitting the equipment shortly. Once the equipment is installed, we will need a couple of small work benches made to fit between the units. Is there anyone able to assist by manufacturing these benches from stainless steel?

If you are able to help, please call Philip Jeeves 338 0666 or 022 025 9924.

Dutton Malvern ANZAC Day Run Words Colin Hey Photos Liam Melhopt

Organiser Malcom McGibbon must have been very nervous the night before the Malvern Anzac Day run as he looked out the window and saw lightening streaking across the sky near Darfield. Fortunately the forecast remained steadfastly good for Anzac Day, so no contingency plan was put in place and the event proceeded as planned. And it turned out to be another good one! It was hard to believe that it had been 2 years since the last one, with the 2020 event having been cancelled due to the lockdown. With a list of around 40 official entries and a likely 10 or so more that would be roll-ups on the day, it was destined to be another successful event. Our meeting point was once again the Darfield Recreation centre at PAGE 10

10am, however there were already two cars there when I arrived at 9.00am, and they arrived steadily between then and 10.30. The weather looked promising, although a slight NW breeze was ruffling the trees around the domain, but with it came a bit of warmth. This was an added bonus for those in open cars, which accounted for about half of those on the run. Once again a strong showing of Veteran cars, with 19 arriving on the day, several of which had not been out for quite a while. Some of them had been driven from Christchurch, and a few came on trailers. Three of them belonged to Malcolm and Anita McGibbon – they were driving their 1915 Swift, their Renault AX was driven by Graeme Willis, and the Model T Speedster was piloted by Tim Palmer. Their 1948 SS Jaguar was also there, driven by

their son Bevan with wife Mon on board too. It’s hard enough getting one old car ready for a decent run, so to have 4 there as well as being overall organiser for the event was a big effort. A great effort too from Steven and Helen Kidd, who brought their 1914 Talbot all the way from Dunedin to do the run. There was also a very good showing of vintage vehicles, and good numbers too from the PV sections of the club. Top marks too to Percy Ralston, who arrived on the only motorcycle – his veteran 1915 Douglas Model U. It was really good having the cars on display for an hour, and this time was well utilised by many Darfield residents who came to look the cars over and see them depart on the run. It was also time well-spent by all the

participants – time to pick up rally packs and packaged lunches, have a coffee from the coffee van, and wander around checking out the other cars and catching up with people. At 11.20 we were all gathered together to hear Terry Hutchinson from the Darfield RSA conduct the Anzac remembrance ceremony, and although the sound system didn’t really perform as intended to play the Last Post and Rouse, the thought was definitely there, and I suspect the odd tear was shed too. George Lee (who with his wife Sue had the oldest car on the run – 1905 Alldays & Onions) then ripped the red flag in half with Terry Hutchinson to signal the start of the run. We then departed the car park one at a time, with those in cars over 100 years old receiving their Dutton plaque from manager

Royden Mauger as they departed. This year the first non-veteran car received its plaque – a newly and beautifully restored jet-black 1920 Model T tourer owned by Evan Perrin. The run took us past the Darfield memorial, already decorated with many wreaths from the earlier morning service there. A quick (or for some, slow) lap of the town, and then onto Kimberley Road for the long straight heading north to join the Old West Coast Road, to turn left for Waddington. After

passing through Waddington we arrived in Sheffield, stopping briefly at the memorial to pay our respects to those commemorated there. A short stint heading slightly downhill at last to the Route 72 intersection, where we took the right turn to head south towards Coalgate and Hororata. Here the faster cars had the opportunity to get ahead, including Allan Familton in the Stanley steam car who whisked past our car, leaving us in his water vapour. The run along the foothills was superb - plenty of time to take in the scenery and relax at 30mph as we settled into an easy cruise with the putt-putt-putting noise of the twin-cylinder engine beating away behind us. Turning right at the SH77 Awaiting the start in Darfield - from left 1910 Brush (Brett O’Rourke), 1914 Renault AX (Malcolm & Anita McGibbon, 1914 Talbot (Steven & Helen Kiddd), and 1905 Alldays & Onion (George & Sue Lee).

intersection, we were soon in Coalgate, where we had the option of proceeding straight on to the finish at Glentunnel, or turning left to Hororata to visit the memorial there. We chose the latter, arriving there 10 minutes later to arrive soon after the public service ended. At this memorial a large panel had been temporarily put up with the names and photographs of all of those who had fallen during the two Wars shown on it. We left our poppies there, and returned to Coalgate and then Glentunnel pushing once again into a stiff head-wind and gradual uphill grade, while the faster and newer cars carried on up Downs Road to visit the memorial at Glenroy before completing their circuit to Glentunnel in the opposite direction. This year’s run finished at the new Glentunnel Community Centre. The car park there could accommodate most cars, and the facilities were spacious and spotless. Some chose to enjoy their lunches outside in the grounds, whilst others went indoors. There would have been more than enough room to accommodate everyone inside had the weather been cold or wet. Once again plenty of chance to check out the cars and chat to others. By 2.30pm large clouds were appearing on the horizon, and although the weather actually later improved, it signalled it was time to head for home. An easy run back to Darfield and beyond capped off a good day of motoring. Thanks are due to Malcolm and Anita McGibbon and his family, Dutton Garage, and the many others who helped out with marshalling and a back-up on the day. Thanks also to the dozens that participated in the event – a very worthy day to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the past, allowing us to enjoy something we can value and enjoy today, whilst supporting the local RSA as well.

25, 35, 50, 60 and 70 YEAR BADGES To be presented at the Branch Awards’ Dinner Saturday 11 September 2021 If you are eligible for these badges, please contact Leigh Craythorne, telephone 342 9110 or email craythornes@actrix.co.nz for the appropriate form. Applications (for continuous membership) are made on a form available from me, either at a Noggin or give me a telephone call (342 9110) and I will post it to you. (You may choose to email me – craythornes@actrix.co.nz) Applicants for a 60 or 70-year badge must have been presented with a 50-year commemorative badge for a 60-year badge and a 60–year commemorative badge for a 70-year badge. Please attend to this and contact me as soon as possible as the badges have to be approved by the branch committee before being processed via National Office and forwarded to us from Wellington - delay may mean a wait until next year’s Awards’ Dinner for presentation. Members do not have to have been in the same branch for 25, 35, 50, 60, 70 years – it is recognition for continuous membership of the Club. 9-90’s REPORT 9-90s Report April 2021 Arthur Bodger took care of this month’s outing and a good job he did too. We met at the New Brighton Club Carpark and we did a round trip over Evans Pass, Lyttelton, around the suburbs and we finished at the Barn. The weather was kind to us. We had 40 odd cars, a good raffle and a few new faces. Arthur had decided ahead that he would donate the entry fees to Nurse Maude. A big thank you from Nurse Maude, Arthur, and also a big thank you for organising a great day. Kevin Templeton and his wife who live in Akaroa were two of the new faces and they intend to come more often. Kevin offered to organise a trip for us to Akaroa. I gave him the choice of a month in 2022 and so we will go to Akaroa in April. Then the Meikles came forward and wanted to claim February, and Tony Becker put his name down for March. Not to be outdone, George Nimmo is

going to organise October. So if you are keen to organise an outing in 2022, give me a ring and you can pick your month. May 12 Organiser, Tony Becker We will start from Cutler Park at 9.55am and we are going back to David Smith who is going to show us some cars that have not been on show before. P GROUP RALLY REPORT

Photos Neale Cook and Linda Inwood On Sunday 11 April approximately 45 cars set off from Cutler Park on one of two different length routes for the Annual P Group rally. The weather played its part and we were now heading for Torlesse Wines in Waipara instead of the more traditional domain that was planned for the backup venue. Both routes went via Tuahiwi , Ashley and Broomfield. Roughly a third of entrants continued all the way to Greta Valley, through Scargill, Waikari and back to Waipara. The Scargill Valley and Weka Pass roads are my personal highlights from testing the route with their Autumn colours starting to show. After finishing up at Cutler Park I had a moment of panic upon arriving at the end venue to find the place empty of vintage cars. My wife Sasha and friend Rebecca had been waiting unnecessarily to help park all the early arrivals. They were filling in time by chatting and sampling wine… to our relief about ten minutes later the first cars arrived. I would like to thank all the drivers for cooperating with their parking instructions and forming neat lines around the outside of the venue. This left an area with large trees in the middle to provide the necessary shade for picnicking. The sun came out PAGE 18

NEALE COOK P Group Convenor in the early afternoon and the shade was appreciated. When planning this event I lost sleep trying to work out how to fit everyone in luckily it all worked out in the end. Maggie and Kim from Torlesse Winery donated a couple of bottles of wine for the prize giving and allowed us free use of their attractive grounds and facilities. A slow but steady number of members responsibly took advantage of the wine tastings and sales available, some by the glass in the sun while others loaded cases into cars. After the event I received several compliments for the relaxed run and interesting end venue choice. Hopefully with the support of my team of helpers we will attempt to provide something similar next year for everyone to enjoy. VETERAN REPORT

Duncan Grant’s 1913 Unic Coupe (picture taken at the Malvern Run)

It’s been another good month for the veteran owners with two good outings. The first was the monthly Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee (OCBC) morning on Sunday 18 April, when around 10 cars from the Veteran Car Club run joined us at Cutler Park after a short run from Kathryn Smith’s property, before later carrying on to the Groynes for a picnic lunch. At OCBC Malcolm McGibbon was kept very busy teaching members young and old how to drive a Model T Ford, making his Speedster available for anyone who wanted to have a go. For some it was a complete re-write of the “how to drive a car” book, but others took to it easily and mastered it quickly. Apparently one of the outstanding students was Terry McQuinn’s nephew, 12-year-old Hector MCCallum, who came out to OCBC specially to have a go. We think he’s lining up to drive Uncle Terry’s PAGE 20

COLIN HEY Veteran Convenor Ph 359-8737 021 883 807

Model T which is due to emerge from the restoration shed any month now. Two veteran cars arrived at OCBC which were ‘new’ to our branch. The first of these was the 1910 EMF tourer belonging to Ramon Farmer, out on it’s first club run after a restoration spanning the best part of ten years. Ramon bought the car as a road-legal running veteran, and used it for a short while before deciding it needed a full restoration to sort out reliability and engineering issues. It’s a large car and Ramon has executed a superb restoration. (For those of you who get the Hub before

this month’s noggin, it’s likely you will have the chance to see it there, together with Bruce and Shirley Shadbolt’s 1904 L’Etoile which was finished in 2019, and perhaps even another restoration that Brian Newberry has just completed which may be unveiled at noggin – a surprise I think). The second ‘new’ car was the 1910 Stanley Model 71 steam car, newly imported by Allan Familton. What a machine!! This is a veteran car that stands alone in awesomeness. It also is a stunning restoration, but it’s not until it starts moving that you realise how impressive it is. Clouds of steam follow in its wake, it has silence, power and acceleration unlike any other veteran I’ve seen, and more taps, pipes and valves than the plumbing department at Bunnings! Alan is to be commended for having the fortitude to a) purchase it from the States, b) get it across the border, c) get it vinned and certified, and d) to drive it. I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of this car at our events in future. After OCBC Jenny and I joined in with the run to the Groynes in our 1909 Wolseley Siddeley, and we had lunch and a delightful afternoon there in perfect autumn weather. This was quite a contrast to driving it from West Melton to Cutler park at 8am that morning, when the first frost for the year made for very cool motoring.

First outing for the 1909 EMF tourer just completed by owner Ramon Farmer.

The second event was the Dutton Malvern Anzac Run on 25 April. Nineteen veterans took part in this event (reported on elsewhere in this Hub), including a few that we hadn’t seen out for a long time. Included in this list was Brett O’Rourke’s 1910 Brush, Duncan Grant’s 1913 Unic Coupe (formerly restored by Brian Black), a delightful 1915 Model T truck owned by Brendon Wright, Bruce and Shirley Shadbolt’s 1911 Hupmobile, and Kathryn Smith’s 1911 Model T tourer. Allan Familton also brought the Stanley to this event, where it again Continued overleaf

attracted lots of attention. The run to the four Malvern memorials is almost 50km, and although the running seems flat, it’s a gradual climb all the way to Sheffield and then Glentunnel. Combined with a stiff NW wind for parts of the run some of the smaller cars were working pretty hard, but all made it to the finish in time for lunch. A great run on another nice autumn day – hard to believe after the impressive thunderstorm the night before. Most left Glentunnel about 2pm when some large white cumulus clouds began

to appear on the southern horizon. As we motored back towards Darfield through the autumn colours in sunshine, heading slightly downhill with a slight tail wind, I turned to Jenny and said “this is perfect veteran motoring”. Another great day out on a very memorable Anzac day and outing. On a very sad note, I must record the passing of Alistair McKenzie two weeks ago. We will miss his enthusiasm, skills, and sense of humour at our events, and pass on our sincere condolences to Denise and the wider family.

Alister McKenzie

Alister joined the Vintage Car Club in August 1989. I first met him in the 1990s when we were both on the annual Syd’s Moped Run. He was riding a Trojan Mini Motor powered bicycle. I also had one of these languishing in my garage and so we started talking and developed a strong friendship from that day onwards. He was a stalwart of the VIntage Car Club, ably assisted by Denise, for almost 32 years until his passing on 16 April this year. Along the way he collected and restored a range of vehicles including two Model T Fords, a Model A Ford pickup, a number of vintage tractors, a stationery engine and an assortment of clip-on motors and several mopeds. These included a Velosolex which he used regularly on a local monthly event, VOG runs. On one occasion he took his Mini Motor to a National Motorcycle Rally in the North Island. He entered in the various motorcycle events as there was not a separate category for mopeds or clip-ons. After the longer motorcycle rally route he told me that he had never before or after had such a sore bottom! Surely this showed true resilience and was a legendary achievement. Some years ago Alister and I decided that we would resurrect the Canterbury Branch annual ‘clip-on runs’. Planning these with Alister was a pleasure as it was truly a co-operative effort. Alister was ably supported by his wife, Denise, who assisted Branch members on the monthly ‘VOG’ runs by driving the back-up car and trailer, as she did on the annual moped and clip-on runs. Sincere condolences to Denise, Andrew and Sarah and families. Rest in peace, Alister. Doug Watkinson Canterbury Branch PAGE 22

VELOSOLEX OWNERS GROUP April 2021 Run The records were set yet again for April’s run – 20 riders arrived at the starting point of VCC club member Rhys Jones’ property in Maddison Road near Rolleston, but unfortunately only 19 riders completed the trek. Jens Christensen who has been having his model 2200 prepared for top performance in readiness for his debut ride with the boys didn’t even make it over the start line, as the wee “tart” lost compression and nobody was able to find this so it was onto the trailer and Jens then did backup for us – a bit of a shame as he had been psyching himself for this big day for quite some time now. Needless to say Jens was the honoured recipient of the Hard Luck Trophy this month. Rhys organised this month’s great run for us. First off we viewed his varied and abundant collection of items to do with motoring that he had stored on his property in 40 foot containers and various shed spaces, so many projects there he should never get bored. Shane Backhouse made a comment that the collection was almost like American Pickers on TV. I was interested to see Rhys had four Hillman Minx’s of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s in his collection – these

were always a popular family saloon back in their day. It was then time to hit the road and as we were semi-rural out there, very little traffic was on the roads until we hit Rolleston where we travelled through some of the newer subdivisions of Falcons Landing and Farringdon to eventually end up at VCC member John Irvine’s home to view his collection of Veteran Model Ts under restoration plus also his 1914 Model T speedster, (must be fast it was painted red) a real tribute to John’s workmanship. A quick trip then to our lunch stop at Pedal Pusher in the Farringdon area where we sure had the staff on their toes with meals and drinks, gee they handled it well and the food was beaut’ also. As luck would have it the rain that had been threatening during our morning ride did finally arrive whilst we were dining and was all over by the time we hit the road again back to Rhys’. A couple of the lads had a bit of a problem with wheel slippage when going over the Weedons Rd motorway bridge, the drive pulley onto the front wheel doesn’t get much grip once the wheel is wet. You could actually smell burnt rubber from the power output of the pulley onto the tyre.

Jens’ model 2200 ride didn’t quite live up to his anticipation! PAGE 23

April - Old Cars, Bikes & Coffee OCBC for April was another good one, with around 70 cars making an appearance during the morning – this month everything from many veterans to a very new-looking Mazda MX5 made for interesting viewing. And yes, the coffee van did arrive this month, with plenty of freshly made coffee and lolly-cake on board too. Just what most needed to warm up after a cool start to the morning.

Avonhead home. They were out on their annual Creepy Crawly Rally, which would continue after OCBC and take them to the Groynes for a picnic lunch. Everyone was captivated by the 1910 Stanley Model 71 steam car as it arrived with this group with owner Allan Familton at the controls – the first time anyone had seen this car on the road – what an impressive machine!

OCBC was the start venue for two club events as well – the Triumph TR Club fielded about 20 superb examples, and around 10 cars from the Veteran Car Club arrived after having first assembled at Kathryn Smith’s

By 10am it was warm and the sun was shining, and by 11am most had departed having enjoyed another excellent and very social OCBC. This month’s OCBC is on Sunday 16th May. I’ve been told that the Wolseley, Jowett and Riley Clubs are using

it as the start point for a combined outing and welcome any other owners of these marques to join them. Likewise, absolutely anyone else is welcome, whether a VCC member or not – just bring the machine of your choice, or anything you’ve created and want to show off – we’d love to see you there.

Model T test drives a roaring success As promised last month, Malcolm McGibbon arrived at Old Cars Bikes & Coffee with his Model T speedster. He offered rides and driving lessons for anyone who had never experienced the wonders of Model T pedals before, or who had, and wanted to drive someone else’s T for a change. Malcolm was kept busy, and his star pupil was Terry McQuinn’s 12-year-old nephew Hector McCallum who was absolutely stoked to be able to have a go, and mastered it quickly! Hector McCallum (12 years old) masters a driving lesson in Malcolm McGibbon’s Model T speedster at April’s OCBC PAGE 25

CARS WANTED - CAN YOU HELP? Ronald McDonald House Fundraising Event Friday 18 June 2021 Ronald McDonald House are running their annual Christchurch Supper Club fundraising charity dinner on Friday 18 June. We have offered to organise at least five cars to help transport their guests from the predinner venue at Christs College to various locations around Christchurch. This will involve transporting two to four passengers, probably doing two trips, starting at 7.00pm. It will only take one hour to complete the task. Ideally we need large cars that can accommodate adults comfortably particularly in the back seat. As we found out last time we helped, it will be dark, cold, and possibly even wet, so we need cars that can handle these conditions. Many other car clubs are contributing to this event also. If you can help, please contact Colin Hey, phone 359-8737 PAGE 32
